2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal “For I Was Hungry…”

The 2019 Bishop’s Annual Appeal is officially kicking off this weekend. The theme of this year’s Appeal is “For I Was Hungry…” It is a reminder that what we do for our neighbors in need, we do for Christ Himself. Please support this important annual cause that helps so many of our brothers and sisters in our Diocese. The Bishop’s Annual Appeal supports the work of our Catholic Charities, priests’ extraordinary healthcare needs as well as Nazareth Village, our diocesan priests’ retirement residence, urban elementary schools and seminarian education. These are all critically important ministries that touch many lives and so please make a pledge today. Please know that funds from the Appeal are used only for the causes described in the campaign materials. They are used for no other purpose. Thank you in advance for your generous support!

It has been a little over two years since we twinned with the parish of St. Paul in the village of Nanpol, Haiti. To date it has been a mission which has brought wonderful results and benefits to the members of the parish there. You may remember the completion of the house for Fr. Theo to live in as one of the first projects that the parishioners there asked for assistance with. That project was completed. The year before last, during Lent, we gathered donations to put a water filtration system in place so that water, fit for human consumption, could be provided. When I say fit for human consumption it is important to note that the water would not pass the expectations we have for our drinking water. Nonetheless this was a tremendous gift to the people of Nanpol and a historic moment as water was provided for them to use to drink and cook with for the first time ever. If you visit our parish website you will note that we are consistently adding pictures about the life of our sisters and brothers in Nanpol as a way of documenting and giving insight to you about the ways in which the support of our parishioners continue to assist the mission there. For example, there are a number of parishioners who make a monthly contribution through our website or through the WeShare giving program. This allows Fr. Theo to provide rice and chicken meals one Sunday a month after Mass. Pictures of this may be seen on our website. It is beautiful to see that after celebrating Mass and receiving that nourishment which is essential for the soul the parishioners are fed with what, for most of them, will be the only full and nutritious meal of that week. As our children have returned to school for a new academic year, so too have the children in Nanpol. The government there provides education but there is a fee for the children to attend school. This is how the meager salary of the teachers there are provided for. Again, the donations of our parishioners have allowed for children of the parish there to attend school. Supplies, limited as they are, were also given to the children. These supplies are basic at best—a backpack, some pencils, a ruler, notebook and such, nothing sophisticated or fancy. Again, pictures of this may be seen on our website. Perhaps you were unaware that it is possible to give a gift from time to time to assist in these ongoing projects. Once a year a second collection is designated for our sister parish. This collection, taken this weekend, allows for these ongoing projects to continue. Every gift given is well used and greatly appreciated by the men, women and children of the parish of St. Paul. Additionally, inhabitants of the village who are not parishioners are assisted when possible, especially the children. There are other projects that would be beneficial at a later time. For now it is the smaller ones that provide an immediate difference. If you would like to donate online simply go to our website. If you would like to make a donation to the second collection know that it will be put to great use and that you will be part of the difference that we are making in the lives of those whose only means of repaying you is the gift of their prayer. If you were not prepared to give this weekend you may of course drop an envelope marked for our sister parish in next weekend’s collection or send it to the parish office. Next month Fr. Theo will be here to visit us and I am sure that he will speak more about the gratitude of his parishioners for the difference you are making in their lives. Thank you. Peace, Fr. Richard

READINGS FOR NEXT SUNDAY First Reading: Amos 8:4-7 The prophet Amos expressed disgust over people who take advantage of the poor. He describes businessmen scheming to cheat the poor, then declares that God will "never forget the things they have done."

Second Reading: 1 Timothy 2:1-8 Paul urges the Christians to pray for all people, especially those in authority. Paul even asked them to pray for the kings who denounced Christ's teachings, because God wants all people to be saved through Jesus. Gospel: Luke 16:1-13 Jesus tells a story about a servant who tries to cheat his employer. The owner is impressed because he would do the same thing himself. Jesus then describes the importance of being trustworthy in small matters, as well as in greater ones. He then states that no one can serve two masters faithfully, so people cannot give themselves completely to both God and money.

Reborn through the waters of Baptism and the outpouring of the Holy Spirit, we embrace:

Roman Thomas Ercolano son of Thomas and Melissa

Lilian Faith Alaan daughter of Harold and Jessica

Nolan James Meininger son of Michael and Jaclyn

claimed now for the fullness of eternal life.
