Emissaries of Peace: 1762 Cherokee and British Delegations

This travelling exhibit, on loan from the Museum of the

Cherokee Indian, presents the story of Lt. Henry Timber-

lake and Cherokee leader Ostenaco as they journeyed to

each other’s countries in 1762, as Emissaries of Peace. The

contrast between their cultures is shown in this exhibit.

The exhibit is based on Timberlake’s Memoirs, along with

period artwork, artifacts from archeology and historical

collections, and other 18th century accounts. Sponsored by: Paulette & Lloyd Long

Cherokee Indian Exhibit

This exhibit looks at Cherokee and British societies in 1762, when Lieutenant Henry Timberlake spent three months in the Cherokee Overhill country. He then traveled with three Cherokee leaders — Ostenaco, Stalking Turkey, and Pigeon — to London and met with King George III.

The British and Americans valued the Cherokees as allies and feared them as adversaries, but their culture was still not understood. Throughout 18th century treaty meetings, the Cherokees kept asking where the English women were, since any agreements concluded without Cherokee women were invalid. In turn, the British ridiculed the Cherokee’s “petticoat government.”

about the centerThe Madison-Morgan Cultural Center occupies an elegantly restored 1895 Romanesque Revival building and is located in the heart of Madison’s National Register Historic District. As one of the first graded public schools in the Southeast, it operated as a school until 1957. Following an extensive renovation, the building reopened in 1976 as the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center. Since that time, the Center has been recognized for its restoration and adaptive reuse of the award-winning structure as well as its reputation for excellence in arts and humanities programming. The original school bell still rings for many visitors who enjoy the Center’s programs.

Today the Center is a non-profit, multidisciplinary performing, and visual arts facility. Inside its walls, the Center houses several permanent collections: a history exhibit highlighting the Piedmont region of Georgia in the 19th century, a restored c. 1895 classroom, a permanent installation of period furniture dating from 1850 in the Boxwood Parlor, and an Arts and Crafts gallery that showcases original furnishings from the Arts and Crafts Period. The original school auditorium is part of the main building and today is the site of the Center’s annual Mainstage productions.

The mission of the Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is to enhance education and enjoyment of the arts and humanities by offering high quality permanent exhibits, temporary exhibitions, and performances while preserv-ing the historic building.

Support for the Center comes solely through memberships, donations, sponsorships, and grants. We invite you to join today and begin enjoying the many benefits of membership: advance and discounted series and performance ticket sales, free admission to tour the Center, the quarterly newsletter, invitations to special events, and a 10% discount on purchases in the museum shop! Contact the Center to join today!

The Madison-Morgan Cultural Center is handicap accessible. Large print programs and audio headsets are available upon request.
