Our Key Themes for CP5
Safety and Performance go hand in hand
Continuous Improvement
Digitising the Railway
/ 3
Initiative Safety benefit Performance benefit
FTAP Trains move when railway is
operational 15 mins (TRS)
ZKL(RC) Removes need to access track
when placing protection 2 mins / line block
Runway lights &
10:1 comms app
Visual confirmation of adjacent
line block 5 mins / line block
Lasers on tampers Removes need to access
adjacent line to measure
5-10 mins faster start for
tampers
CCTV on MFS Removes risk of working at
height and in dust
15 mins
(Awaiting isolation)
Lean tool storage & well planned,
lean, organised teams
More competent and strength
in depth 30 - 60 mins +
Magnetic drain plugs Prevents catastrophic failure of
hydraulics 4 shifts per annum
Proximity switches Better quality track at handback More reliable and faster repair
time

Structured Continuous Improvement at Network Rail
Many different models:
- Total Quality Management
- Six Sigma
- Lean
- Kaizen
- Process Improvement
- Process re engineering
- 4 ation model:
Eradication
Simplification
Rationalisation
Automation
But all encompass….

Continuous Improvement - Concept of Marginal Gains
"The whole principle came from the idea that if you broke down everything you could
think of that goes into riding a bike, and then improved it by 1%, you will get a
significant increase when you put them all together"
Sir Dave Brailsford, CBE

golds at both, while British cyclists won 59 World Championships from 2003-2013
