PRESIDENT’S REPORT

Another year. I well remember my parents saying that the

years went by quickly and I thought it was because they were old – so

what does that say about me?

Last year ended with a couple of big bangs.

AWARD FOR NOEL WILLIAMS

Our Vice-President Noel Williams received a Senior

Volunteer Award from the Order of Australia Association. The award

is exclusive to Queensland and is presented to just three people

annually in recognition of their volunteer work in the community.

Noel was nominated by Neil McGarvie

OAM.

The presentation was made at a gala

dinner in Brisbane in November which

was attended by Noel and Maxina as

well as Neil and Jean McGarvie.

Then we had our ANNUAL SOIREE which was again a

great success. We had a lovely summers evening and were joined by

Steve Dickson MP, Mayor Mark Jamieson and his wife, our Patron,

Lorrell as well as Cr Christian Dickson and Cr Ted Hungerford. We

were entertained by Tania McFadyen and her friends then the

Buderimaires sang their great songs of Buderim. Thanks all.

Our raffle winners were 1st Iced Christmas cake with book, tea towel and bottle of whiskey was won by

Olive Ashby

On 1 January 2015 Olive Ashby passed away in a nursing home at Coolum. Olive, known to all as

‘Ollie’, was a ‘Buderim Living Legend’ during B150 and long term member of Buderim Historical

Society. She was a granddaughter of Price and Isabella Jones who emigrated from Wales to

Rockhampton in 1876, then selected 140 acres at Horseshoe Bend and moved with their family to

Buderim in 1881.

Olive was born in Blackbutt on 18 March 1913, the eldest of three children to Fred and Agnes

Jones. She attended school in Toogoolawah. Her sister Ida and brother Price both predeceased her. In

1930 when Olive was 17, the family returned to Buderim for a holiday with her grandparents in

Gloucester Road and stayed on permanently. When she was 21 she spent three years in Brisbane

working in a cake shop and learning dressmaking. On her return to Buderim she started dressmaking

along with her sister. At the outbreak of the war materials for dressmaking were in short supply and, in

1941, Olive worked at the first ginger factory in an old shed near Middys, along with Evelyn and Myra

Dickinson. At the time her weekly wage was £2/9/- ($4.90). She played tennis and was a representative

basketball (netball in today’s terminology) player.

Olive’s love of dancing led to her meeting Roy Ashby at a Mooloolaba dance. Roy was a soldier

with 2/16th

Battalion which was camped at Atkinson’s farm at the base of Buderim. He was in between

returning from the Middle East and leaving for New Guinea. They were married the following year in

the Buderim Methodist Church. They had two children, Lorelle born in Nambour during the War and

Barry born in Perth the following year. Roy was from West Australia and the couple lived there briefly

before moving to Buderim in 1946. Roy went into business as a fruiterer with his brother in law

‘Chook’ Sorensen. Olive and Roy later worked at Fielding’s store for a few years. From 1957 Olive

worked as an assistant at Chapman’s Buderim Pharmacy until she retired in 1975. Roy passed away in

1977 and Olive continued to live in their house in Elizabeth Street opposite the Bowls Club until she

went into a nursing home at Coolum when she was 98. She had lived in the same house since 1947.

She worked for many years at the Buderim picture show in the School of Arts on a Saturday

night and always helped at the School fancy dress ball. In 1965 she joined the Bowls Club and her 100th

birthday party was held there in 2013.

PLEASE NOTE CHANGE OF MONTH

Our first History Talk for 2015 will be held on Saturday 7th March at 2.00pm.

Our speakers are members of BHS Gary and Dorothy Flanigan. Gary and Dorothy are

archaeologists and have spent years digging in Greece, Jordan and Cyprus. They helped

with the excavation of a 10,000 year old habitation in Jordan. We look forward to meeting

them and hearing their interesting stories. All are welcome – bring your friends.

ESME OLIVER

Farewell Esme Oliver

Esme worked tirelessly at the Pioneer Cottage for many years – long before I joined the group.

She was not able to take her place on the door roster when I knew her – her hearing/eyesight were failing

but her interest and energy remained constant.

She had completed a Museum Course from James Cook University in previous years which was

remarkable for a woman of her age and an indication of her enquiring mind.

With her knowledge of not only the cottage treasures, but in many cases their provenance and

preservation, she was a mine of information and in my term as curator she was the go-to person and I

valued her advice greatly.

I often drove her home from various events and we would always loiter on her verandah chatting

and admiring her lovely pots of flowering plants.

Esme had a very lovely and caring family who looked after her well.

AUSTRALIA DAY AWARDS

I was thrilled to be nominated for the Australia Day awards by Noel Williams and members of our

Committee but can you imagine my shock and delight to be awarded this prestigious award by the Sunshine

Coast Council. So many people do so much for our communities and deserve the acknowledgement that I

feel very humbled.

These are all of the winners for 2015 with the Mayor Mark Jameison, Rosanna Natoli and the award donors.

AUSTRALIA DAY PARADE

We would like to thank David Buckton and Marty Malt for the loan of their lovely cars for the parade.

Before Noel was able to get these men involved I was going to walk and when we heard that it was the

hottest Australia Day for 13 years I was extremely glad of the ride. Thank you also to Lorrell Jamieson,

Joyce Simper and Lyn Richardson for joining me for the ride.

Meanwhile the volunteers were at the cottage feeding hoards of people with Devonshire Teas and

Moss and Bill were guiding tours of the cottage. It was all a great success and Bill sold and signed 10

copies of his book as well. Thank you everyone for your time and cooking especially in that heat.

OUR YOUNGEST VOLUNTEERS

Before Christmas we decorated the cottage and Robyn’s granddaughter Kate came to help decorate

the upstairs bedrooms. She made lots of decorations and then bought her parents to come and view the

cottage. She was so enthusiastic I thought I had a President in the making to take over from me but she is

only nine years so my job is here to stay for a while yet.

Then in the New Year Robyn bought Harry her grandson who wanted to help tidy up the garden he is

five. We need more willing helpers like this.

GARDENERS ALL

This is a call to anyone who would like to donate some time to help our wonderful garden group. I

am amazed at how much time and effort they put into making our garden such a beautiful addition to the

cottage. But there are only three or four of them and they could do with some more help. Anyone interested

to know more about it you could call either Maxina on 5326 1215 or Laurel on 5445 1035 they would

welcome you with open arms.

MYSTERY OBJECT

Does anyone know what this metal object is? It is about 10 x15 x 7.5 cms and hollow. The top is open and

looks as though you would put hot water inside. Also the top is broken and maybe the rail should continue

right around. We have asked lots of people and so far nobody has been able to help. Maybe you can so

please ring Wilma if you can 5445 3653.
