Your Club has determined that we must clearly define the decision on when, or when not, our newly installed retractable sunshades will be operated, and have approved a Policy for this which is printed in this issue of the Bulletin (see page 3).

The Club Policy is based on the level of ultraviolet radiation forecasted for the Sunshine Coast for every day of the year. It is a measure which cannot be disputed and we will be using the shades whenever the UV level is predicted to exceed a level that can damage your skin and lead to possible skin cancer. Temperature and cloud cover will not be a determining factor. UV levels range from 1 to 11 and when the rating is level 3 and above, it is recommended that sunscreen, hat and shade should be worn or sought. Feel free to visit the website for more information if needed.

The SunSmart UV Alert can be found on the Bureau of Meteorology website, and it is a partnership between The Cancer Council Australia, the BOM above, and Australian Radiation Protection and Nuclear

Safety Agency. The Queensland University of Technology has also done a lot of work in this area and confirms the findings of the other parties.

Whilst this decision may seem to be “over the top”, it might be worthwhile reminding members that Queensland has the highest incidence of Melanoma in the world and every one of us will have had, or do have, some form of skin cancer, be it merely skin damage.

Please support your Club in being a SunSmart Club – one which we must all embrace in order to limit skin damage.

Club goes Sunsmart

The month of June has once again been a very busy month at the Club. Playing numbers in our Club competitions have been very pleasing and the number of players rolling-up far exceed previous months. It may be that members nominating for Pennants play this year feel that practice will help their form and their selection into our representative teams. The Pennant selectors have a very difficult job this year in filling all 5 Pennant Divisions in which the Club has nominated, and we are hopeful we will be able to be successful and show our bowling strength throughout the region.

Our new greens are now performing well and we can now play on all 16 rinks whenever needed. The Contractors will be back early July to tweek up the surface and to give advice on matters relating to maintenance, setting us up for a problem free future. Likewise we expect the sunshades will be completed early July, and with that project completed we can continue to plan our next project or two in our determination to provide members with the best and most comfortable bowling club on the Sunny Coast.

Financially we are continuing to meet our profit expectations and the increased player numbers on the greens go a long way to meet those expectations. If these numbers continue to hold for the

remainder of this year, and the weather does not interfere too much, our year-end numbers will be very pleasing to all interested members.

It is with some regret that Norm Mackay has decided to resign from the position of Games Director and to head south to blue country to manage his son’s business. We thank him for his commitment to the Club and wish him well. Fortunately Colin Harris has offered to fill in for the short term and will handle the finish of our Club Championships and with the help of other willing helpers will manage the other major games planned for the remainder of the year. We would welcome any member wishing to get involved and to learn the job for a future role on the management Committee to put their hand up.

Here we are with half the year gone and little done on the social side, but this is about to change.

Expressions of interest are needed for a TRIVIA NIGHT to be held on Friday 20th July after having dinner at the Friday night bistro. $20 per head includes a three course dinner.

Teams of 4 will be made up and it will be held in the bar area. If you are interested put your name on the sheet on the front desk in the foyer.

With the advent of workplace health & safety First Aid for our bowlers is a requirement. Any member who has a current First Aid certificate need to contact me so that an up to date list can be made. A First Aider should be on hand at every game to ensure the well being of any injured bowler.

School bowls has ended for this term but will resume next term. This club has 21 sets of junior bowls and bags that were purchased through grants.

POLICY FOR SUNSHADE OPERATION.Shades will be extended over both greens whenever the UV rating for Brisbane, as provided on the Bureau of Meteorology website on a daily basis, is at Level 3 or above for that day.

During the winter months of June and July, the extension of the shades may be limited to between the hours of 10AM to 4.00PM when UV radiation is at it’s highest, depending on available approved operators.

The only times shades would not be extended daily would be when wind is predicted to exceed 15 kph, during rainy weather, or when the UV prediction is below Level 3.

Any decision to retract the shades, after extension, would made by a minimum of 2 Club approved operators.

The UV rating assessment is fully supported by documentation from the Bureau of Meteorology and the Queensland Cancer Council, and meets our “Duty of Care” under Work Health and Safety legislation.

Hi everyone,

As you are aware we are using the greens more now than we would have been if we still had grass, so we will not be cancelling games as early as we used to because an hour or two can make a difference as to whether we can play or not. If we have planned to play for the afternoon it should make little difference if the game is cancelled at 1.00 o’clock or 11.00 o’clock

The committee have set down some rules as to HOW and WHEN the shades are to be operated.

Operation.

There are now 10 trained people to operate the key for the shades, these people can call on a responsible person to help them operate the shades.

If you are not a trained operator you are not to use the key without a trained operator.

Two people must be present for the operation of extending and retracting the shades.

One person with control of the key. The person operating the key MUST have their hand on the key at all times that the motors are operating (no excuses)

The second person is to walk along as the shades are being operated, walk beside the clubhouse and keep an eye on the operation at all times, if there is a problem you must shout STOP loud enough so the key operator can hear you.

It is very important that the people who are in control of the operation of the shades are not distracted and have their full concentration on the shades. It will only take a moment of distraction, a motor to stop, and the shade cloth will be ripped apart, and this is not under warranty.

The shades will be used as and when required. Unfortunately everyone will not be happy when they are out or in but we have to have a set of guidelines.

Buderim has entered 5 divisions in this years Pennants competition. They are 1, 2, 4, 5 and 6. Pennant practice games have commenced on Saturdays with the selectors working on the possible teams to compete in this year’s competition. The selectors are Richard Goldstone, Ray Lamb and Steve Mason. Steve has joined the team in the absence of Norm Mackay who has withdrawn for family reasons.

The first round is to commence on Saturday 4th August and the final round will be played on Saturday 6th October. Good luck to all teams!

Club Championship Fours nominations close on 5th July with play to commence on the 15th. We need to get these games completed as the Triples and Mixed Pairs are still to be played to complete this years programme.

The new look Buderim Bowls Club greens are proving to be a great success with a lot more players attending our games. The last two weeks have shown a big improvement in the numbers, 120 last Thursday, 48 on Friday and a record 88 on Saturday. How many more when the sun starts shining?

Short and sweet this month. Jon has let his head go and ordered six new brands of Sauv Blanc and Chardonnay. Some of the names are a bit quant, like "Fish Eye" and "Step Road" but the flavours are worth savouring. Ask Monica for a sample taste.

The tipping comp is going on just the same with nobody making any moves on the leader John Dillon. Just a small reminder that all monies must be paid before the end of the season.

The month started with The President’s & Secretary’s Day and we had a great turn-out of members with us all feeling a ripple of excitement at the outcome! Last year the Secretary’s Team won so my side was hopeful to win this one! Joan Grant sponsored the day and we all enjoyed good games with my team coming out on top ,well done girls ! We all thank you Joan and all the helpers for a lovely day .

We sent a Sympathy Card to Judith Clark whose husband past away after a long illness and Alma Smith kindly represented us at the funeral.

We have a new sponsor for our Spring Medley thanks to Pam Chugg’s efforts and we welcome the $450 donated by the new Funeral Parlour of Perry & Oester in North Buderim.

Margaret Catton’s Birthday Bash on July 12th was a real fun day and though we missed her as she was celebrating her 70th in great style with her relatives in

New Zealand we wished her many more and enjoyed the afternoon. Thank you Margaret !

We had a visit from Karen Favell , Vaughn Isaacs and Helene Harris the following week which was great as they mainly play away. Helen and Vaughn joined us again on the Wednesday Open Pairs to compete with other visitors and club members who nearly filled the Greens. Morning tea was provided by us members and is one of the reasons that players keep coming back, thank you Ladies !

Jean Pinch is improving and though she has not been transferred to Buderim Private Hospital as she has asked, she is up and walking which is great. We have sent Get Well Cards to Helen Hawthorne and Pam Mitchel wishing them speedy recovery as they are both sadly missed .

Our Fiesta on the 3rd of July is our next big day and we can only hope and pray we get a sunny day!

The Championship Triples competition has been completed with the some close games throughout the event. The winners were Laurel Learoyd, Helen Young and Jan Hagan who defeated June Crump, Pam Jones and Karin Kaltenbrunn 20 – 17. Congratulations to the winners.

The Open Pairs sponsored by BOQ Buderim were held on 20th June with 16 teams nominating. The next Open Pairs are being held on 15th August sponsored by RetireInvest. Place your names on the sheet in the foyer.

The Consistency Competition has commenced with those playing really enjoying this form of the game. 20 players nominated for this event.

The Annual President V Secretary Day sponsored by Joan Grant was held on 5th June with the President’s team victorious 114 – 97. Joan presented the prizes to

the winners and runners-up and we thank her for her ongoing sponsorship of this fun event.

The Ladies Fiesta is being held on 3rd July. 23 outside teams have nominated as well as five Buderim teams so we will have a full house of 28 teams. Thanks to Edenlea on Buderim for their sponsorship of this event.

Pennant practice continues with good attendance on Tuesday mornings.

Nominations are now being called for Minor Singles which will commence after Consistency. To make this event viable 10 – 12 players will be required. New bowlers as well as unlucky older bowlers yet to win a Championship need to be encouraged to enter this event.

Just for a laugh

Fine weather was enjoyed by close to 60 players, a good day had by all. The afternoon consisted of players and non players about 50/50. We had a few non appearances and some who thought it would be a nice idea to just turn up and have a game. But we eventually sorted them out and commenced play at 1pm, with the help of Mr.G. BARTON and Mr. G. PENGALLY collecting the money in the front office.The Learoyd Burgers, what could one say Bruce ( lovely grub) thank you and your lovely helpers (Laurel and Jan) and thanks to all others who helped.

The result of raffle, bowls and bag, 1st to Alison WAH, Ladies member, 2nd to Bob MURDOCK. The game prizes for the day were drawn from the hat the first out was won by a visiting team of four who were lucky enough to receive four 25 dollar

vouchers from RED ROOSTER. (THANKS TO RED ROOSTER FOR YOUR ONGOING AND MUCH VALUED SPONSORSHIP). Second place four bottles of wine acquired from our own cellars. Other donated prizes were used to reward those players who managed to hit the jack. We had caps donated by Taylor Bowls, thank you to Taylors, Special thanks to Bernie Webster for his special effort in obtaining items from Bundaberg Rum, these included shirts, small eskys and card holders, all used for touchers and very much appreciated

At the time of writing this short report and before the sums have been done it would appear the men of league will receive about $1500, and the club has made a few dollars also.
