T he Pro gram: To ny MarquesPosted by Phillip Danz on Oct 01, 2013

Programs Chair Vicky Boatwright gave a short introduct ionof our own member Tony Marques.

She said that he is a nat ive of Portugal and has been backthere many t imes and has visited Rotary Clubs there.

Tony said that he indeed was born in Portugal in a lit t letown of Ilhavo. His family moved to California when he wasa young boy (10 years old) and he, at f irst , lived in Ant ioch.

His area is famous for Cod f ishing and is near the westcoast of Portugal and about an hour f rom Spain.

The Rotary Club in his area raises funds for their Africancolonies (use to be) and in the area they BBQ sardines and

have bicycle races. In 30 years, Portugal will be 900 years old and so people have lived in the same lit t le townshipsfor centuries. Tony showed us some movies of various people, the wooden houses in the area (created as

f isherman shacks and now painted with stripes) and of homes with t iles inside and outside of houses. He showedthe f ishing boats that had large carved bows that looked like Viking boats.

(Left Tony with stocking hat, middle, and right showing a town's flag.)

(Below left is another flag)

Thef isherman would leave theirfamilies for six months at a

t ime when on f ishing expedit ions. Tony tells an interest ing that when hemoved to California, he looked into joining the Boy Scouts. His dad was deadset against this because in Portugal during fascism, the Boy Scouts werecoveted by the dictator as Hit ler did in Germany. I assume the dictator wasSalazar. Tony showed us some pictures f rom the t ime with what looked likeBoy Scout kids giving the Nazi salute. No wonder his dad wouldn't let him join.

Most of the Portuguese that we know of in California were not f rom Tony'sarea. They were sheep herders f rom the Azores.

President Thorman thanked Tony for his excellent presentat ion and I am surethat a book will be donated on his behalf to the Carmichael library and don'tsay that we do not have interest ing people in our Club!

David Thorman whose cell phone was inadvertent ly picked up atthe bar by Phil Danz as advised by Jay Sedlack to keep (for safekeeping) and was then graciously of fered to return to David for asmall f ine. David, our President, and cheapskate placed only $1 inthe pot!

The total collected was $41; there were no "Bell Ringers" today.

However President David did do something right during theevening. He presented a special "Reporter's badge" to Phil Danz(He had already presented one to Phil's partner Walter Malhoski(with the Bullet in/Website).

LET 'S GET T O KNOW T HEMPosted by Phillip Danz on Oct 01, 2013

Derek Smith, Food and Beverage Manager, Ancil Hoffman Golf Course.

Looking around The Main Event we see a very different surrounding than that ofa few years prior. There was a day when after 2p.m. the place was closed down, the food definitely left something to be desired, and the surroundings were dimand run down.

The change is accredited to Derrick Smith, Food and Beverage General Managerwith Empire Golf Incorporated. In 2010 Derrick took over while working with CherryIsland at the same time. The Cherry Island project was scheduled to take 2months, but due to county regulations, etc., soon ran into 7 months. With the depthof this project it got to be a little too much and now Derrick is completely with AncilHoffman s Main Event .

First was a complete makeover. Next the hiring of a great staff, including the chefwho you will read about at another date.

Derrick tells me his main challenge is to bring the public in. Many seem to think thebar and grill is a private club situation. Not true - - -everything from a sports bar tothe nice evenings they prepare for Carmichael Rotary. Their menu is very diverse--every thing from the hot dog to refreshing salads and sandwiches. The breakfasts

are outstanding!

Derrick is very interested in the Ancil Hoffman story. He is in the process of collecting pictures from the Hoffman family and sharing thishistory with the patrons. Check around the walls and visit the time when Ancil Hoffman was manager and trainer of the renownedheavyweight champion Max Baer- - thus the name The MAIN EVENT

I finished our interview with the question Have you ever considered being a Rotarian? Hopefully he will be our guest next week.
