The evening was his idea, Club Service Director, Alan Gallaway, tohave a Mystery Bus Trip, where it 's locat ion was no "mystery",and with no Bus, and no real t rip except that we did have to t ravelwith our cars to the restaurant. In spite of the deceiving name ofthe event, we had a wonderful dinner at Buca di Beppo, ItalianRestaurant, on Howe Ave.

Guests in at tendance were: Suzanne Gallaway, Carol Beil,Nanette Roe, Dana Newell, and Janet Chao.

Alan Gallaway

President David Thorman did give some announcements: forinstance, about the Roseville Sunrise Rotary Octoberfest on theFriday, October 25th, and about our own Walt and Patt i Malhoskihost ing our Christmas party on December 10th, but the saddestannouncement he had to make (f rom our standpoint) is that JaneIpsen is leaving the Club because she has accepted a posit ionwith a ret irement community in Carmel. She will be sorely missedand I only wish that we all could move to Carmel with her. Janetried to placate us with the caveat that she will st ill be with us unt il

January 1st , but it could not diminish our sadness in seeing her leave.

We had great fellowship and dinner the rest of the evening and were treated to a surprise speaker, noneother that Alan himself who gave us a detailed account of the moving of his big yacht f rom Aruba toColombia, a distance of 470 miles.

Special Olympics - Sat urday, Oct o ber 19t h, 2013Posted by Phillip Danz on Oct 24, 2013

We started at 9 a.m. and the lunch bags were assembled, eachwith a bag of potato chips, some juice, rice crispies, condiments, apple sauce, water and a hot dog. Eventually 575 ofthem were produced, feeding approximately 500 "SpecialOlympics" participants, teachers, monitors, and other staff.

We worked in the "multipurpose" room on the sprawling campus ofSierra Gardens Park, located in Roseville. Our hot dogs werecooked (boiled) in two heavy caldrons just outside the room (onthe left) and they were served on a small patio off the right side ofthe building.

(below left), The hot dogs being cooked, put in buns and (belowright) the lunch bags assembled. We had some 16 volunteers whoworked about three hours doing things: cooking, wrapping, assembling, etc.

When they came for lunch,it was a great pleasure toserve them their luncheonbags and to see theirhappiness.

Peace Night at t he Mo viesPosted by Phillip Danz on Oct 24, 2013

From: Lynette Andersen [mailto:[email protected]] Sent : Monday, October 21, 2013 11:44 AMSubject : Rotary District 5180 Peace Night at the Movies

The inaugural Peace Night at the Movies was a huge success! And we’re looking forward to many more “peace movies” tocome. After delicious small plates and wine at Mama Kim’s, we walked just across the alley for a private showing of “TheWay” at the intimate Blue Box Theater.

Rotarians, family, and friends are invited to join us every month. Admission to the movie is FREE, but space isext remely limited (only 35). To reserve your spot, you must RSVP to [email protected]

We meet at Mama Kim’s Restaurant (1616 Del Paso Blvd., Sacramento, CA 95815) for “$5 small plates” and wine (MamaKim’s opens at 5:30 p.m.), then take a very short stroll to the theater (right across the alley). The movie will begin around6:30 p.m. After the movie, we reconvene at Mama Kim’s for discussion, more small plates (the $5 dessert menu) anddrinks.

Join us next month (we will be presenting one “peace” movie every month) for “All Quiet on the Western Front” (1930version) on November 14, in honor of Veterans Day. Based on the Erich Maria Remarque novel of the same name, it isconsidered a realistic and harrowing account of warfare in World War I. The film is described in the United States Library ofCongress' National Film Registry as "culturally, historically, or aesthetically significant." It was the first movie to win theAcademy Awards for both Outstanding Production and Best Director. Trailer: http://www.youtube.com/watch?

December’s movie will be “Joyeux Noel”, date yet to be determined. In December, 1914, World War I was well under way. On Christmas Eve, numerous sections of the Western Front called an informal, and unauthorized, truce where the variousfront- line soldiers of the conflict peacefully met each other in “No Man's Land” to share a precious pause in the carnage witha fleeting brotherhood. This film dramatizes one such section as the French, Scottish and German sides partake in theunique event, even though they are aware that their superiors will not tolerate its occurrence. Remember, if you’d like to join us, you must RSVP to [email protected]

LET 'S GET T O KNOW T HEMPosted by Phillip Danz on Oct 01, 2013

Derek Smith, Food and Beverage Manager, Ancil Hoffman Golf Course.

Looking around The Main Event we see a very different surroundingthan that of a few years prior. There was a day when after 2p.m. theplace was closed down, the food definitely left something to be desired, and the surroundings were dim and run down.

The change is accredited to Derrick Smith, Food and BeverageGeneral Manager with Empire Golf Incorporated. In 2010 Derrick tookover while working with Cherry Island at the same time. The CherryIsland project was scheduled to take 2 months, but due to countyregulations, etc., soon ran into 7 months. With the depth of this project itgot to be a little too much and now Derrick is completely with AncilHoffman s Main Event .

First was a complete makeover. Next the hiring of a great staff, including the chef who you will read about at another date.

Derrick tells me his main challenge is to bring the public in. Many seemto think the bar and grill is a private club situation. Not true - - -everythingfrom a sports bar to the nice evenings they prepare for Carmichael

Rotary. Their menu is very diverse- -every thing from the hot dog to refreshing salads and sandwiches. The breakfasts areoutstanding!

Derrick is very interested in the Ancil Hoffman story. He is in the process of collecting pictures from the Hoffman family andsharing this history with the patrons. Check around the walls and visit the time when Ancil Hoffman was manager and trainer ofthe renowned heavyweight champion Max Baer- - thus the name The MAIN EVENT

I finished our interview with the question Have you ever considered being a Rotarian? Hopefully he will be our guest nextweek.
