President David Thorman opened the meet ing with the new and better arrangement of the podium andf lags, not looking out at the sun (as before) but now at the opposite side of the room (which will help tobring better acoust ics and photos).

He designated Phil Danz (as prescribed) to give both the "Pledge and the Thought" for the day. Thepledge, of course, was automat ic, the thought is below:

The Thought

"The Vietamese Buddhist monk Thich Nhat Hanh describes enjoying a good cup of tea. Youmust be in the present moment, mindful and aware, to enjoy the tea, to savor the sweetaroma, to taste the f lavor, to feel the warmth of the cup. If you are ruminating about pastevents or worrying about future ones, you will look down at your cup and the tea will begone. You drank it, but you do not remember, because you were not aware. Life is like thatcup of tea."

Heather Pollock

Sacramento Division – Community Relations Manager

Republic Services

Heather Pollock has seven years in the waste andrecycling industry. As Community Relations Managershe has been successful interfacing with customers, local government representatives, school districts and the general public. She brings her knowledge of recycling practices as well as programs thateducate.

Heather’s career in the recycling and waste industry began in 1999 withWaste Management. As a project manager she successfully implemented

and managed a national customer service initiative designed to improve andmaintain corporate standards. She was also involved putting a 3 CartSystem (waste, recycle, green waste) into action for residential customers.

As a recycling coordinator for another hauler, Heather gained knowledge ofthe commercial and the construction side of the industry. She worked withlarge commercial accounts assisting them with the execution of recyclingprograms. Heather is also an accredited LEED Green Associate. This

accreditation made Heather valuable to the construction projects that were working for LEED Certification on their buildings.

Heather has recently become a Corporate Member of the Citrus Heights Rotary Club.

Heather said that there has been a recycling ordinance that passed in 2008 (affecting Elk Grove, Citrus Heights, RanchoCordova, Carmichael) stating that if you (business or residential) have at least 4 cubic yards of garbage a week, you arerequired to have a recycling program.

State law (AB 939) requires 50% of waste generated be reduced or recycled. The goal for 2020 is 75%.

The need is to divert all recycle materials to bins or containers.

Heather's Company will come out to your premises and make suggestions. Recycling is cheaper than Garbage. Republicwill remove your trash and then it is send to Milpitas, sorted and sold to China or elsewhere in the world. Recycled items areof value. Often scavengers will get into recycling bins to sell items, old fridges and washing machines etc.

Heather personally thinks that their is no purpose for plastic bags and that eventually there will be a ban on them.

Republic is one of three competing companies in our area. The employ 107 people locally and have been in business formore than 35 years.

In the interest in clarity, two pages of information pages provided by Heather are published below. President Dave thankedHeather for her very informational lecture.

The f ine-master was again amazed at the generosity of the Club. There were two Bell Ringers today, EdBunt ing and Jay Boatwright. Ed was celebrat ing the marriage of his son, and Jay had a fun-f illed weekendin San Diego. Amongst the other supporters in smaller amounts were: Walter Malhoski, something aboutthe Chicago Bears, Jason Clark 'cause he missed the "Thought for the Day", Mark Beil because he likedPhil's orange hat, and some others which were too quick to catch. Total for the day: $228.00. And nowwe have 16 Bell Ringers!

Derek Smith, Food and Beverage Manager, Ancil Hoffman Golf Course.

Looking around The Main Event we see a very different surroundingthan that of a few years prior. There was a day when after 2p.m. theplace was closed down, the food definitely left something to be desired, and the surroundings were dim and run down.

The change is accredited to Derrick Smith, Food and BeverageGeneral Manager with Empire Golf Incorporated. In 2010 Derrick tookover while working with Cherry Island at the same time. The CherryIsland project was scheduled to take 2 months, but due to countyregulations, etc., soon ran into 7 months. With the depth of this project itgot to be a little too much and now Derrick is completely with AncilHoffman s Main Event .

First was a complete makeover. Next the hiring of a great staff, including the chef who you will read about at another date.

Derrick tells me his main challenge is to bring the public in. Many seemto think the bar and grill is a private club situation. Not true - - -everythingfrom a sports bar to the nice evenings they prepare for Carmichael

Rotary. Their menu is very diverse- -every thing from the hot dog to refreshing salads and sandwiches. The breakfasts areoutstanding!

Derrick is very interested in the Ancil Hoffman story. He is in the process of collecting pictures from the Hoffman family andsharing this history with the patrons. Check around the walls and visit the time when Ancil Hoffman was manager and trainer ofthe renowned heavyweight champion Max Baer- - thus the name The MAIN EVENT

I finished our interview with the question Have you ever considered being a Rotarian? Hopefully he will be our guest nextweek.

2013 Dist rict 5180 Go lf To urnamentPosted by Phillip Danz on Aug 19, 2013

To all District 5180 Club Presidents,

Attached is the information and the entry form for this year's Governor's Cup Golf Tournament. The tournament will be heldagain this year a the beautiful Valley Hi Country Club in Elk Grove. Quite a few changes have been made this year includingreducing the player entry fee to $150, and the entry into the Governor's Cup to $100 which includes a tee sign for your club.

PDFmyURL.com

This will be our fourth annual tournament with Save Mart Super Markets a co-sponsor with District 5180. All of the netproceeds from the tournament goes to our on going project of renovating the Camp Fire Girls site at River Bend Park. Thisis a huge project, and the improvements we have made thus far are incredible. While there is still a long way to go, the parkis now useable, and is being used by youth groups thanks to your support of this project.

We hope every club will enter a team in the Governor's Cup and win the esteemed trophy to keep for a year. Past winnershave been:

2010 - Rotary Club of North Sacramento2011 - Rotary Club of North Sacramento2012 - Rotary Club of West Sacramento2013 - ??

Will your club be the next name on the trophy? A sure way to have a chance is to enter a team in the tournament. It is a funday, but more importantly it raises funds for a great Rotary project. Send your registration form and check to Beth Walter atthe address on the form. Any questions should be directed to Beth or me.

Thanks again for your continued support of the Rotary District 5180 - Save Mart Governor's Cup.

YIR,

Clarence ParkinsDistrict Governor, 2007-2008District Foundation Chair, 2009-2012District 5180"Light Up Your Rotary World"
