Can Anything Good Come Out of Prison? - John Mandala

by Gloria LeBlanc

Our speaker, John Mandala, speaks and writes on a num-

ber of subjects related to the Criminal Justice system. John

spent over 20 years in prison. He spoke of what it is like to

be inside and outside of prison. 600,000 prisoners are

released each year in the US and 400,000 of them return

to prison within 3 years. Our jails are not well-run busi-

nesses.

John was one of the last in the prison system able to get a

BA. Budget cuts eliminated education for inmates. There

are currently 700,000 parolees in Florida. Most can’t vote.

They are felons and can’t be insured for many jobs so

many companies cannot hire them. In “our” world we

want a person to be trustworthy, non-violent, responsible

– but in jail the reverse is needed to survive.

AVP (Alternative Violence Program) tries to teach our school children how to acknowledge

anger and not be violent. Smart people learn from their mistakes. Wise people learn from

mistakes of others.

With 2.3 million prisoners in the USA today, prisons need to change. Rather than having an

isolated environment, the public should be more enmeshed in the prison system. Educa-

tion is a must. Few ex-cons are needed to make license plates. Nor is there a big need for

ex-convicts to be fitness trainers.

Warren Buffett donates one share of stock each year to help prisoners return to society. It

began in Sing-Sing and is now in six New York prisons. HBO did a special on this, “Zero Per-

cent.” Not one person has gone back to jail who has gone through this program. 70% of

prisoners do NOT have to return to prison if the prisons teach the inmates how to integrate

into the public. John believes that you need to teach a prisoner how to fish (a hand up)

rather than feeding them fish (a hand out).

John is involved with Breathing Space, a not-for-profit based in New York and he operates

Chef John’s Red Wagon BBQ, Breathing Space’s first entrepreneurial venture in Florida.

Greenhouse at Maximum Security Prison - Juneau, AK Inspired by an inmate telling a club member he hadn't seen something grow in the 7 years

he’d been jailed, the Rotary Club of Juneau built this greenhouse with member expertise (an

architect, master gardener, general contractor and electrician), a greenhouse kit and nu-

merous donations of materials and volunteer hours. Years ago there was a greenhouse at

the prison, but budget cuts and weather contributed to its demise. The first "ask" to build it

was in the spring of 2010, but it took two years before the superintendent agreed to the

$7,000 for THE NO BAKE NO CAKE TAKE

Thanks to 50 members and friends who donated over $7,000, and all those who donated food, beverages, and volunteer hours over the past month to make our first-time Club-only fundraiser quite a success.

And for those with dollars not yet in the mix, it’s not to late to donate!

Special nods of appreciation go to Co-chairs Randy Golden and Minerva Stern, to Planning Committee members Allen Gover and Jock Walker, Florida Tech faculty band “Twitchy,” to cake-box creators Stephanie Falconi, Suzanne Frank, Jackie Men-zel and Ailish Nic Phaidin, to food and beverage donors and collectors, the set-up and decorating committee, to bookkeepers Stan Helm and Jack Ward, to Yvonne Darling for the floral centerpiece that was later auctioned off and to Ed Baranowski for conceiving the No Bake No Cake idea.

Gross figures from the event on Friday, November 1st indicate $7,035 in contribu-tions from members and friends, beverage profits and income from cake box and other cash contributions.

JACKIE MENZEL WINS THE NO BAKE NO CAKE

FAKE CAKE MARTINI

Congratulations go to Past-President Jackie Menzel for her winning cake. White with pink icing and all cardboard, it won by a large margin.

Always a happy participant (she made and delivered food items, too) Jackie was not at the event at eight o’clock when the announcement was made by Past-President Dwan Buie on Friday at the Tortoise Island club house.

We owe you one, Jackie.
