Words of wisdom from the Health amp Safety Manager

When I was first asked to write a column in The Noodle my immediate thought was one of excitement (note to self - get out more) followed by those of fear dread and panic What on earth could a Health amp Safety Manager of a college write about which students would find vaguely interesting In desperation I turned to my daughters both of whom can be classed as students After I managed to coax them away from their iPods and distract their attention just long enough from Lady Gaga to ask them their advice they came up with the usual reply ldquoWhatrdquo Being a typical parent I needed no further prompting I immediately climbed onto my soapbox and lectured them on the effects of loud noise upon their ears My daughtersrsquo theory in relation to music (which I fancy is just about the norm judging from my excursions around the College) is why have it loud when you can have it really loud and share your dubious taste in music with everyone in a radius of 100 metres

The reality is that almost half of young people experience hearing problems after being exposed to loud music Now I have no doubt that you like everyone else have heard this before BUT before you go and turn up your music or flick to some other interesting article in the magazine consider this We as humans are lsquoHunter Gatherersrsquo and because of this we need all our senses to be as finely tuned as possible Wearing headphones immediately takes away our awareness of the world around us There have been a number of serious or fatal accidents in our local area where people have been listening to music on their iPods and missed hearing either vehicles or trains approaching with disastrous consequences Are we in the College exempt from this Unless you are related to The Terminator at a guess I would say no All I ask is please think before you plug in and stay alert Northbrook needs you to be a lert

LLDD Spring Fair Success

Students Install the Unexpected in Gallery

Fine Art degree students will be displaying their work in lsquoInterventionsrsquo an exhibition of site specific work The work is the result of a year-long project in which students and their tutors met at Pallant House to discuss ideas for making daring and unexpected art works that could be situated anywhere in Pallant House except where you might expect to see them on the walls of the gallery

From the surreal humour of Maureen Haggerrsquos giant soft-sculpture clubs made from menrsquos ties to the exquisitely detailed miniature photographs by Yasmin Raphael the lsquoInterventionsrsquo exhibition will take you on a journey of discovery which will help you to see the building and its contents through fresh eyes The exhibition runs at Pallant House from 2nd May to 5th June
