May I take this opportunity to introduce myself and to wish you all success with your studies. Northbrook is a great college with fantastic staff who want to work with you to help you achieve the best that you can in your studies. One of the ways we do this is by listening to what you have to say in surveys and through your course representatives. I would encourage you to make your voice heard in these ways so that we can make improvements where necessary. As we reach the half way point in the Autumn Term I hope that those of you who are new to Northbrook are feeling settled and enjoying the college experience.

Celebrating Graduation 2011

Congratulations to all our university level students, who graduated recently at a ceremony at Worthing Assembly Hall. A total of 545 students graduated from Northbrook’s university level courses this year - a number which has been rising steadily over the last ten years. The guest of honour was Steve Allen, founder of Prime Care, who gave an inspirational speech, encouraging the graduates to take risks and believe in themselves. The atmosphere was celebratory with the graduates cheering their classmates as they each went up to the stage. Graduate Julie Ball gave the ‘vote of thanks’ speech on behalf of the students, during which all the graduates threw their caps into the air. After the ceremony, students and their guests were treated to a glass of bucks fizz in the foyer before spilling out into the sunshine.

National Anti-Bullying Week runs from 14-18 November. Here at Northbrook College we consider bullying a serious offence and will not tolerate physical, cyber, emotional, verbal or any other direct or indirect bullying. Here, first year student Chloe Dyer shares her experience of bullying at the secondary school she attended before coming to Northbrook:

“As most of us know, bullying is a serious and sometimes life threatening experience. Fortunately, I am here to put across a positive message. Until a few years ago, I was being constantly picked on and harassed at school but I have come out a stronger person. The bullying started at the

Anti-Bullying Week

beginning of secondary school and went on for four years. I pretended for the whole time that I was okay, but inside it was destroying me. I would tell my teachers, but it never seemed to be dealt with.

Towards the end of secondary school, it wasn’t just mental but physical abuse too – in one incident, a boy threw a chair at me. It wasn’t until a few months back that I realised how strong and determined I had been. I discovered this when I spoke to one of the boys, who said that he had left school, having failed all of his exams and went into full time work, as, in his words, ‘college is for boffs’. Bullies are the ones with the problems – not you, your friends

or your family. They are cowards in hiding. You can overcome them too, as I did – anything is possible.”

If you witness any form of bullying or are subject to bullying, you can speak in the first instance to your Personal Tutor, a Pastoral Learning Mentor or a member of your departmental management team.

Words of wisdom from the Health & Safety Manager

Award winning author, illustrator and political cartoonist Chris Riddell, thrilled Northbrook Art & Design students with a visit to the College this week. Chris, who lives in Brighton, is an acclaimed political cartoonist for The Observer newspaper and has also written and illustrated a range of beautiful, wildly inventive and funny children’s books. Chris talked to the students about his creative process, from initial sketch to finished piece, sharing some of the illustrations which have earned his reputation as a fine draughtsman. Chris told the students, “It’s important to find your own stories, be proactive and generate your own work, rather than waiting for someone to commission you.” He then gave the lucky Illustration and Communication Design degree students the privilege of looking through his original sketchbooks and manuscripts.

Bugs are all around!

The cold and flu season has arrived and by all accounts it's going to be a rough one. Here are ten simple tips that will help you avoid cold and flu viruses.1. Bar soap is a perfect breeding ground for viruses and bacteria. Wash your hands frequently with liquid antibacterial soap instead.2. Don't share drinking glasses- use disposable cups instead.3. Use disposable tissues when blowing your nose - use each tissue once, throw it away then wash your hands thoroughly.4. Colds and flu are often spread by hand-to-hand contact. Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth after being exposed to viruses or bacteria.5. Use disposable paper napkins and towels whenever possible.

6. Wash pens etc regularly in warm, soapy water to kill bacteria and viruses.7. If you have to sneeze and a tissue is unavailable, sneeze into your shoulder, not your hands, to avoid spreading germs.8. Frequently clean surfaces such as stair rails, telephones, counter tops and door knobs to avoid the hand-to-hand spread of viruses.9. Open windows when weather permits, to circulate fresh air.10. Avoid smoking as this is a respiratory irritant that increases susceptibility to viruses.

Developing simple habits can help you stay healthy and you can gloat at your friends expense when they are wilting with colds!

Models Required for Wella Exposure

An Engineering student has created a pulse jet engine as part of his BTEC course. George Davies, an apprentice working for EDO MBM Technology, learnt new skills of sheet metal fabrication, welding and complex machining. He planned, drew, manufactured and tested the engine, which can be seen in action on YouTube at www.youtube.com/watch?v=zqCaG1VHyLU. George said, “The idea of making my own jet engine really caught my imagination. I also wanted to be challenged by my project and building the jet engine was one of the hardest and most rewarding things I have done. “
