Happy New Year to all our students at Northbrook. Welcome back - there’s a busy and exciting term ahead, with lots of activities planned including: Street Dance sessions, Equality & Diversity events and much more.

Student Governors attend meetings of the Corporate Governing Body to provide the student perspective. Training for the role is given and no experience is necessary.

Northbrook Student Radio

Northbrook Student Radio (NSR) broadcasts live online every night from Monday to Thursday, between 6pm and 9pm.

Check out the website www.nsr.fm during the evening to savour some cutting edge aural delights from the wealth of talented musicians, bands, producers, DJs, journalists, writers and performers that make up Northbrook’s vibrant community.

As well as a regular live broadcast, NSR also uploads weekly podcasts for you to enjoy at your leisure. On top of all that, you can get yourself better acquainted with some of the regular talent through frequently updated blogs and profiles to stay up to date with news of awesome gigs and events taking place in and around the area.

During your time as a student at Northbrook, you will be asked for your views and comments on your experience.

In order to collect these views, there are a number of surveys that you will be asked to complete including:

• First Impressions Questionnaire – all students• Framework for Excellence Survey – FE students only• National Student Survey – final year university level only (starts 17 Jan)• Final Year Survey – all students

These surveys allow you to comment on how you feel about key issues: your experiences of starting at College, the teaching and learning and what it is like to be a student at Northbrook College.

Your Views

A Foundation Degree Theatre student has been the subject of a four-page feature in a recent edition of Sussex Living magazine. Muhala Mtonga, a second-year student, describes how the course has challenged him to develop new skills and has allowed him to become a leading actor in Northbrook’s productions. He has since been spotted by the Body Shock Dance Company and performed at various venues including ‘Move IT’, London’s biggest dance event.

This is the time of year when colds and flu can spread like wildfire throughout the College. This is mainly due to the cold weather that we have had to endure over the past month or so, which has meant that we have had to stay in to keep warm. Being in such close proximity to other people increases the chance of catching viruses.

We can put men on the moon but as yet there is no 100% cure for the common cold or flu virus. We can, however, take certain actions to try to avoid falling ill.

When you cough or sneeze, it is particularly important to follow the rules of good hygiene to prevent the spread of germs:

Always carry tissues• Use clean tissues to cover your • mouth and nose when you cough and sneezeBin the tissues after one use• Wash your hands with soap and • hot water or a sanitizer gel often

There’s a simple way to remember this:

Travel and Tourism students have organised a series of fundraising events for Asthma UK and Cancer Research UK.

The second-year students (pictured right) collected a total of £62.64 through ‘Guess the Number of Sweets in the Jar’ and naming ‘Duckie Duck’.

Travel and Tourism Students Raise Cash for Charity

The Business, Computing, Professional and Hospitality department held their annual FE Awards event in November. Thirty students were nominated to receive awards under a variety of categories including: Attendance, Progression and Effort.

Equality and Diversity Forums The Equality and Diversity Student Forum provides a chance for you to air your views on matters that relate to equality and diversity within the College. The forum meets at least three times a year and the next date is:

NextStep Careers Information and Guidance

HE and Professional students can now take the opportunity of booking Room 226 in the PALMZONE centre, located in the library at West Durrington. The room contains eight desks and has four PCs running with a variety of applications including: Microsoft Office 2003, Sage Line 50 and Adobe Photoshop CS2. There is also an Epson ceiling mounted projector and screen. Professional and HE students may like to reserve this room to prepare and rehearse presentations in a private space. New Room for Palmzone

The College Committee of Students met in December on each campus, with Students Reps from both FE and HE.

A number of issues were raised including: delays in EMA payments, the facilities at Broadwater and internet filtering, along with requests for a prayer room at Shoreham and automatic doors to the refectory at Broadwater.

Positive feedback was given for the one-to-one support provided by the College and the helpfulness of staff. Points for action were noted and progress will be reported at this term’s meetings.

Student Success

Students Perform with West End Stars

Foundation Degree Dance students have staged a tribute to world renowned choreographer and dancer, Alvin Ailey. ‘For Ailey with Love’ was a celebration of the life of Ailey, an African-American arts activist, who changed the perception of American dance forever. The show also included a celebration of women, from the suffragette movement to the present day, which was choreographed by the students.

Musical Theatre students and staff have performed alongside West End stars in a recent charity tribute concert. ‘Never Forget You’ was arranged in memory of choreographer, Ross Humphries, who passed away last year. The show involved friends from both the College and the industry and included cast members of Dirty Dancing, Grease and Billy Elliot.

A 17 year-old Performing Arts student has landed a leading TV role, a part in a major film and is the star of a local musical. Luke Newton stars in ‘The Cut’, a fast-paced daily BBC online drama which is broadcast on BBC2 on Saturdays at noon. He is also an extra in the new film of ‘Brighton Rock’, due to be released in February, and is one of the stars of City Youth’s ‘West Side Story’ at Brighton’s Sallis Benney Theatre in March. Luke said, “I love acting and singing and I would love a career as an actor.”

Foundation Course Leader, Keryie Vickers said, “It was fantastic for the students to be able to perform with West End stars and other local acts, to help raise a great deal of money for charity.”

My job is to improve sport at Northbrook and I have been busy setting up new sports activities and getting students to play more sport. I will be organising more sporting events throughout the year so make sure you check out my page in each issue of The Noodle.

Lunchtime and after-College football matches continue until the summer term. There is also the chance to join the Inter Football Tournament on Friday afternoons at Worthing Leisure Centre.

Outset Youth Action Team Members

The West Sussex ‘V-involved’ team (Outset Youth Action) is looking to recruit inspiring, self-motivated, confident and energetic young people.
