Army Helicopter Visits Northbrook
An army helicopter flew in to visit Northbrook College students last week. The Lynx helicopter’s visit was part of an army careers event held at the College’s Shoreham Airport campus. The students were shown around the inside of the helicopter by the pilot and door gunner, where they got a first hand look at some of the equipment. The Careers Day was organised by the Royal Electrical and Mechanical Engineers and included a presentation, a display of the various types of uniforms, seeing what makes up a soldier’s field kit and the opportunity to try on body armour, helmets and various webbing. The students were also split into groups which were each given a Haynes model four cylinder engine to build and they were assessed on technical prowess, the ability to work as a team, organisational skills and interpretation of technical information.
We are embarking on a number of different building projects throughout the various campuses, in order to make a big difference to your experience at the College. We all have a responsibility to ensure our own safety and, with this in mind, there are a number of hazards to be aware of:
Falling objects - never walk under ladders or scaffolding, unless there is a marked out covered walkway - whilst every precaution is taken to reduce the hazard you should never tempt fate!
Delivery and other site vehicles - make sure as you walk around the College that you are aware of vehicles that may be entering or leaving the site. Some vehicles may block the
pavement during deliveries and force pedestrians onto the road. Please look out for other vehicles if this happens.
Scaffolding and other access equipment - when such equipment is erected or dismantled there is a danger of being struck, so ensure that you don’t go near.
Stored and stacked materials - you can reduce the risks associated with the storage of materials, by ensuring that you stay on the correct side of the perimeter fence that will be erected around the site.
Openings and excavations - make sure that you do not wander anywhere near the fenced off area,
as you could be injured if you fall into excavations, manholes etc. Other hazards include:
Slips, trips and falls within • pedestrian areas Plant machinery and equipment• Hazardous substances• Electricity and other energy sources• Dust, noise and vibration• Roadworks•
Without proper precautions, construction sites are dangerous places for those who work on them on a daily basis - never mind the risks to others who see them as playgrounds and don't comprehend the dangers. So the word of the day is look, but stay away and be safe!
50 students took part in the recent African Dance and Drumming workshops at West Durrington Theatre. All students thoroughly enjoyed the experience!

LLDD students are taking part in a choir for young people with learning difficulties, which will perform at Glyndebourne. James Redwood, renowned composer and choir master from Glyndebourne, came to Northbrook in January to offer taster sessions for the students and to sing with them. The show premieres at Glyndebourne, with live performances in Brighton, Chichester and London, followed by a tour in late spring which will screen a film of the choir. The project is a celebration of the 2012 Paralympic Games, which will be the first to allow people with learning difficulties to participate.

A second year BA Fine Art student is taking part in an exchange programme with an American university Deya Slavova, flew out to the University of Wisconsin-Stout in January and will study there until May. Her counterpart from Wisconsin, Nathan Illgen has recently arrived at Northbrook and will be taking part in the BA Fine Art Trip to Berlin in February. The exchange agreement between the Northbrook Fine Art department and Wisconsin has just been reinstated after a break of around 10 years. From 1995 to 2000 there were two students exchanging each year.
Sara Garland, Curriculum Leader for Community Learning, said, “The learners enjoyed the volunteering experience. They liked helping other people, but at the same time gained experience of a range of workplace skills such as: being part of a team with a wide range of people, following instructions and working in a warehouse environment.”

Komedia Music Celebrations
The Music Department held a Celebration of Achievement at the Komedia, Brighton in January. Students were given the chance to demonstrate their talent by submitting their best work for exhibition. The submitted work was performed live on stage and presented via computers and display boards around the venue. Awards were presented for best work submitted, most consistent student and most improved student, with prizes including track mastering by the famous Abbey Road engineers and instrumental lessons. In the evening a festival of live and recorded music performed by students showed Northbook’s incredible talent and diversity.
A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Year One and Year Two National Diploma Theatre Students staged a colourful version of ‘A Midsummer Night’s Dream’ recently.
The shows were promoted by students on the Level Three Arts Management course, with ‘Bottom’ aka Kyle Whittington promoting the show around campus.
Caroline Hansen, a Creative Writing student at Northbrook College, has published her first anthology of 21 poems entitled ‘Raspberries’. The vibrant pink volume showcases Caroline’s talent and the selection portrays an impressive range of moods. ‘Raspberries’, the title poem, narrates the time when Caroline’s husband, Derek, discovered he had cancer. With Derek now in remission, Caroline has decided that all proceeds from the sale of the anthology will go to Macmillan Nurses and the Church of the Good Shepherd. The volume costs £5 - please contact the Adult and Community Learning Department for copies. Northbrook’s Creative Writing classes currently run twice a week on Monday evenings and Tuesday afternoons, during term time. Writers can gain technical knowhow and feedback on their work in a friendly and supportive atmosphere.
