A Time of Grace

Advent, from the Latin adventus, means arrival or coming. Somethingcoming and we are commanded bythe Lord to watch. At the beginningof Advent, the Church providesscripture readings that point us toChrist’s second coming. There neednot be any confusion. Mimi: We are so fortunate in New Or-leans to be in an area where there are manyAdoration chapels and opportunities.

Ivan: First comes family prayer, thenAdoration will be much easier. It is impor-tant to start Adoration in the family.

Mimi: What did you see in heaven?

Ivan: In 1984, Our Lady told me I wasgoing to see heaven. She came to me tosay she would take me to heaven. It wason a Thursday. On Friday, Our Lady talkedwith me a few minutes. I am kneelingdown, I get up, and Our Lady stays on myleft side. Our Lady takes my left hand. Itake three steps, and heaven opens. I goanother three steps and am standing on asmall hill. The hill is similar to the BlueCross hill in Medjugorje. I see heavendown. I am seeing people walking, smil-ing, dressed in long robes of red, blue, gold.People ask me how the people look. Theyare singing with a distant song. It is veryhard to describe.

People ask me how old the people are, maybe 30-35 years old, praying, singing, with so many angels. I heard distant songs, angels singing, very difficult to describe.Remember the Gospel speaking: “Eyeshave not seen, ear has not heard…”

This is why Our Lady is coming all these30 years, as a guide for us, reserving forall of us a place in heaven.

Mimi: Our Lady has appeared manytimes and in many places. Has she spo-ken to you about any other apparition?

Ivan: Our Lady has not spoken to me ofany other apparition. I can’t speak for theother visionaries, Mirjana, Jacov, Ivanka,Vicka, or Marija.

Mimi: Do you know if each visionary isreceiving the same 10 secrets, or are theremany secrets?

Ivan: Lots of people ask me the samequestion. Our Lady does not give six vi-sionaries 60 different secrets. Some se-crets are the same. When I stay in Med-

jugorje in the summer when most of thevisionaries are there, I talk to some of themduring coffee time, especially Jacov andMirjana. We talk of the same secrets.

Mimi: It will be interesting to learn all ofthat. Does Our Lady ever give any spe-cific message for any country, especiallyAmerica?

Ivan: Our Lady always talks for theworld. She never gives any specific mes-sage for a country, nation or any religion. She always gives a universal message. Thisis why every month on the 25th she al-ways says, “My dear children” and endswith “Thank you for responding to my call.”

She is a mother who talks to all her chil-dren. Our Lady told me a couple of times,“I know my children are trying to live mymessage. If people are trying, this is a verygood step. Living in this world today espe-cially this time, sometimes it is hard, evenfor me. I am trying every day. We needto be following, following Our Lady’s mes-sages. We need to always be fighting tolive the messages. We need to put in frontof you what is most important. Every-thing will be easier if we put Jesus first.

Mimi: Your particular prayer mission ispraying for whom?

Ivan: I am praying for priests and voca-tions for the Church.

Mimi: Has Our Lady given you anythingto write down for later publication?

Ivan: I am working for a long time on mybook. The book is half finished. I needmore time. So many papers stay on mytable. The last couple of years I have beenso busy with traveling and speaking inchurches. Our Lady gives me privatelythings especially for priests, young people, family, and children. I give examples frommy family and some examples from my-self.

Mimi: How can we find joy with the stateof our world today?

Ivan: Joy, joy, joy can only be in Jesus.

Nobody can give joy except Jesus. Read-ing the Bible, you will see joy. That is whatOur Lady is asking, to read the Bible. OurLady asks for confession to cleanse our-selves of sin. When the Holy Spirit andgrace comes in your heart, there is a riverof love. A river of joy then becomes yourheart. Remove all negative and you willbe open for the Holy Spirit.

Mimi: Thank you for coming to New Or-leans and bringing Our Lady with you sooften.

Ivan: I think New Orleans is my secondhome. I come one or two times a year.New Orleans is a foundation for Med-jugorje. After the apparitions began in 1981,some of the first pilgrims came from NewOrleans. The relation between Med-jugorje and New Orleans is important. It is significant.

On Thursday, November 24th, we com-memorated the 11th anniversary of thedeath of Fr. Slavko Barbaric. Fr. IvanDugandzic was the main celebrant of theevening Holy Mass in the church of St.James, and there were 25 priests thatconcelebrated. Fr. Ivan said in his homily:“We are remembering today the11th anni-versary of the death of Fr. Slavko, aFranciscan and a priest who was in Med-jugorje more than any of us and whoserved Our Lady through her messages.Fr. Slavko was not the one who taughtabout fasting and prayer, but he was agenuine example and encouragement tomany. He did not have to direct pilgrims togo and climb Apparition Hill and CrossMountain; he was going before them. Therefore, we are proud and grateful forhis life and we pray to our Lord to givehim the reward he deserves.”

After the apparition, Ivan spoke to thepeople. He said he could see heaven be-yond Mary and that it was beautiful withcolorful flowers and angels. Awesome, isn’t it? Through her messages Mary tellsus that God exists. Satan is real and soare heaven, hell, purgatory and, yes, eter-nal life.

As owners of a religious store, my wifeKay and I are often approached by insur-ance agents and their package of benefits. My answer is always the same. The onlyinsurance I’m interested in is Eternal Lifeinsurance. That may seem a bit too muchfor some, however, I am dead serious andso is Mary and the messages she givesthrough Medjugorje. As mentioned ear-lier, one of Our Lady’s titles is Queen ofPeace. I would now like to share withyou part one of the Catholic Church’steaching on peace.

The Promotion of Peace

“Peace is not the mere absence of war orthe simple maintenance of a balance ofpower between forces, nor can it be im-posed at the dictate of absolute power. Itis called, rightly and properly, a work ofjustice. It is the product of order, the or-der implanted in human society by justice.

“The common good of the human race issubject to the eternal law as its primaryprinciple, but its requirements in practicekeep changing with the passage of time. The result is that peace is never estab-lished finally and forever, the building upof peace has to go on all the time. Again, the human will is weak and wounded bysin; the search for peace therefore de-mands from each individual constant con-trol of the passions, and from legitimateauthority untiring vigilance.

“Even this is not enough. Peace here on

earth cannot be maintained unless the goodof the human person is safe-guarded andmen are willing to trust each other andshare their riches of spirit and talent. Ifpeace is to be established, it is absolutelynecessary to have a firm determination torespect other persons and peoples and theirdignity, and to be zealous in the practice ofbrotherhood.

“Peace is therefore the fruit also of love;love goes beyond what justice can achieve.Peace on earth, born of love for one’sneighbor, is the sign and the effect of thepeace of Christ that flows from God theFather. In His own person the incarnateSon, the Prince of Peace, reconciled allmen to God through His death on the cross. In His human nature He destroyed hatredand restored unity to all mankind in onepeople and one body. Raised on high bythe resurrection, He sent the Spirit of Loveinto the hearts of men.

“All Christians are thus urgently summonedto live the truth in love and to join all truepeacemakers in prayer and work forpeace. Moved by the same Spirit, we can-not but praise those who renounce violencein defense of rights, and have recourse tomeans of defense otherwise available tothe less powerful as well, provided thatthis can be done without injury to the rightsand obligations of others or of the com-munity.”

(From the Pastoral Constitution on the Churchin the Modern World of the Second VaticanCouncil. [Gaudium et spes. N.78] page 470)

The late Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. re-nounced violence in defense of rights. Hepreached non-violence and marched forhuman rights and peace. He knew his pathin this world and gave his life for truth.

Spriate title as the No.1 collegiate footballteam in the country, LSU, was to play theNo. 2 team at Alabama University. In-deed it was a big game that LSU won 9 –6.

The Times-Picayune that morning shouldhave read, Our Heavenly Mother, underher title Queen of Peace, was to visit usthat night in Metairie, Louisiana. Noticewe say Our Mother, as she is mother ofall creation and of every race. ImagineOur Lady personally delivering God’s mes-sage of hope, peace and love. That’s whatMary does, you know! Mary guides us inOur Savior’s way in truth and immortality.

On that November 5th night, IvanDragicevic attended Holy Mass at St.Francis Xavier Catholic Church inMetairie. Did you know that Mother Maryhas remarked that Holy Mass is the great-est prayer? Anyway, after a Spirit-filledhomily by Msgr. Andrew Taormina and theconclusion of Holy Mass, the overflowingattendees remained in their pews and be-gan the rosary. No one left the after Mass, not a single soul.

As we prayed, Ivan, a humble, untiring, holy messenger and witness of Our Lady’sappearances in Medjugorje, approachedthe altar. He knelt down and after a fewminutes went into ecstasy. Graces pouredover the jam-packed, beautiful, new St.Francis Xavier Church. Our granddaugh-ter Abigail Marie Mule, at age eleven, wasted no time approaching the altar toget a closer look. The next day she askedme, “Why can Ivan see Mary and I can-not?” Good question, I thought. I said wesimply believe in faith. I mention this onlyas a way of peering into the mind and heartof a child of God.

By Teresa Fama Jesus in her arms on a huge rock, and thenshe left. Standing by the rock, we felt itwas so sacred! While on the mountain, Ioffered my umbrella to a woman who wasthere for hours. She looked up at me andsaid, “I’m not getting wet.” Also, thecandles were still burning during this verywet night. It was such a humbling experi-ence.

The next day, the visionaries showed usthe rock the Blessed Mother stood on. Hermessage was … Peace, peace, peace …only achieved through personal and uni-versal repentance, prayer and fasting, plusa deeply-rooted faith. This will lead to truepeace in oneself, as well as peace in theworld.

The peace we felt all week was amazing.I lost ten pounds that week. Food did notinterest me. That alone was a little miracle. We witnessed the miracle of the sun. Itwas pulsating like a beating heart, comingdown toward us and then returning to thesky again. The people we saw included ablind man climbing Krizevac barefooted.I kept thinking, “What must heaven belike,” when this awesome feeling of thepresence of Jesus and His beloved motheris so great here in this rural village.

The day we were to fly home, I felt that Ihad to go back to Mr. Podbrdo to touchthe “rock” the Blessed Mother had stoodon. I had this uneasy feeing. My friendstried to talk me out of going back. Theywere petrified that I would miss the bustaking us to the airport. I prayed that Icould do it all in time, running up the hill, never falling. When I got to the very huge“rock,” I noticed a piece of rock on theground. I picked it up and molded it intothe “rock” like a puzzle peace. This I tookwith me when I left the mountain. I didget back in time to go to Mass. My inten-tion was to break the stone into smallpieces and give them to my fellow travel-ers, but they had other thoughts. They

told me that the stone was my reward forgoing back, plus it had the letter T etchedall over it. My name is Teresa.

On the plane home to New York, I wasdeep in thoughts of the supernatural eventsthat had occurred in Medjugorje. I feltvery close to Jesus and His beloved mother, looking out the window and thinking thatjust above the clouds is heaven! Then avery strange thing happened: I kept hear-ing a voice saying, “Take him to the doc-tor, take him to the doctor.”

My husband, Augie, was only 60 years oldat the time. He seemed to be in goodhealth. He never smoked, drank or evercomplained of pain. Why would he needto go to a doctor? I could not let this go.He made an appointment to see a cardi-ologist who could not understand why wewere insisting on a test to check his heart.During the test, it was found that Augiehad five blocked arteries in his heart. Thecardiologist would not let him get out ofbed and performed surgery the next day.The doctor was astonished and told us thatmy husband could have had a fatal heartattack if the surgery was not performedimmediately. That was 24 years ago.Augie is now 85, we are retired, live inFlorida, enjoying the extra years theBlessed Mother gave us.

I share my story with you now because Iexperienced the heavenly intercession ofour Blessed Mother. She is only interestedin bringing the faithful back to her Son.Her blessing remains alive not only withinmy heart, but with all who feel her love. The urgent message is to reconcile withJesus Christ and bring peace to a danger-ously troubled world. God bless you.

ittle did I know that my trip with St.Aidan’s group would be life-trans-forming, not only for my husband,

Augie, but for me as well.

When our group arrived in Yugoslavia in1987, we were delayed by authorities, which was quite upsetting. Sr. Marci keptus peaceful and was determined nothingwas going to take away from our visit. In1987, there were no hotels, motels or res-taurants in the area. We shared a homewith nine people, with only one bathroom.Nothing could take away from the mis-sion we had so looked forward to.

The week we spent away was phenom-enal! The church was crowded withpeople at the 6:00 pm Mass, where theBlessed Mother would appear to the vi-sionaries. Flashing lights would signal herarrival and again when she left. I keptpraying for some proof to bring back hometo those who did not believe in the dailyappearance of the Blessed Virgin Mary.My prayers were answered when I lookedup at the choir loft and saw her image, from floor to ceiling, in pale pink. I wasastounded. I asked the Lord, “Is this Yourmother?” She took a step closer and be-came a deeper, brighter pink. My friend,Lynn, who was standing with me also sawher. We were so stunned, we started cry-ing. It was incredible!

The visionaries told us when the BlessedMother would be appearing to them on Mt.Podbrdo, which would be an evening event. The weather was rainy on that particularnight, but, as we climbed the small moun-tain, we all sang, “Ave Ave, Ave Maria.”It was a struggle to keep from falling onthe wet, muddy and slippery rocks, whilecarrying umbrellas and flashlights. Whenwe reached the top, we were disappointedto find that the Blessed Mother had al-ready spoken to the visionaries with Baby

theMir Response . . . By Mimi Kelly, Director Emeritus of The MIR Group

“THE SOJOURNERS”AN EXTRAORDINARY MEDJUGORJE FILM – WHAT’S IT ALL ABOUT?

This production of The MIR Group and filmmaker, SteveScaffidi, is a unique story as told through the eyes of a curiousfilmmaker and his son about a pilgrimage of 47 youths on a 10-day journey to the other side of the world to discover one ofthe most mysterious places on earth. Along their journey bothare faced with situations that challenge their faith and their fun-damental beliefs. Others on the trip have questions of theirown, most notably, whether visionaries are actually receivingmessages from the Virgin Mary. In spite of their doubts andmany conflicts, this father and son seek to find common groundwhile attempting to discover the truth about this sacred landand the devout believers in their group. What lies ahead is notwhat you would expect.

Troy Broussard, the film’s executive producer (and the Presi-dent of The MIR Group), said that at 14 years old, he reluc-tantly took a trip with his family and a group from New Orleansto a remote village in what, at that time, was communist East-ern Europe. They were there to see firsthand whether therewas any truth to claims that a local group of children were, infact, actually seeing visions of the Blessed Virgin Mary. Hewent as a skeptic. But what he experienced on that pilgrimageto Medjugorje changed his life and still serves to this day as aprofound reference point in his own journey of faith.

25 years later, millions have made the same trip. And the im-pact on those who still travel to Medjugorje is no less profoundtoday.

Several years ago, he became acquainted with a group of youngadults in metro New Orleans who pray together as The So-journers of The Burning Heart. Many of them have committedthemselves to a life of prayer, worship, service to the churchand enjoy a deep sense of peace and fellowship. Led by TammyDupuy and a spiritual director, what they accomplish as a groupis inspiring and gives hope that the next generation will carrythe future in caring hands.

When, in 2011, the opportunity came to follow the So-journers on their own faith walk, he felt it was a perfect oppor-tunity to show the world one facet of modern spirituality in itsyoung people. In attaching seasoned Director and friend StevenScaffidi to the project, Troy knew that the film would haveheart. And true to Steve's other movies, he expected the finalwork would also be honest.

In short order, the focus of the movie became less about thepeace of The Sojourners, and more about universal questionsof belief. True to form, in the course of shooting many hours offootage, Steve's eye caught stories within the stories- what aboutthe doubters on the trip? How would the faith of those aroundthem affect them, if at all? What about those struggling with theconcept of God and His place in their lives?

What makes the film particularly poignant and personal is thefact that part of its main focus is on the relationship betweenSteve and his own son, a young man asking life's big questions- questions that he doesn't want his father to answer for him.As the final cut of The Sojourners emerged, Troy realized thatthey had a documentary that was uplifting, unbiased, joyful, real and timeless. The first screening before an at capacity the-ater in New Orleans produced tears, laughter, and life reflec-tion among its viewers. Since that time, there have been re-quests to screen the film from Boston to Los Angeles, the UKto Mexico and Australia.

The plans are to make this film available sometime in the springof 2012. Please continue to monitor the news in the Med-jugorje Star and on The MIR Group’s websitewww.themirgroup.org for more details on the film’s release. If you are interested in showings in your area please contact:Troy Broussard, Executive Producer (504)388-8895-Email:[email protected] or the Director/Producer, StevenScaffidi (504)669-0189-Email: [email protected].
