Re-creating the historical facts be-hind Luke’s account of the birth ofJesus is virtually impossible. Thatwas never Luke’s intent nor shouldit be ours. The point is that Jesuswas born into a world that was ruledby Caesar Augustus. In the future,Jesus will contrast this kingdom ofCaesar to the kingdom of God. Jo-seph is depicted as taking Mary, whois pregnant by the Holy Spirit, tothe city of David. The census wasgenerally conducted only for thepurposes of raising taxes and draft-ing young men into the military. Here, the purpose is really to makesure Jesus is born in the city ofDavid in order to fulfill his messi-anic mission.

An angel of the Lord informs theshepherds, and us, what has reallytaken place with the birth of Jesus. This revelation is the high point ofthe entire passage. Not only has anew infant been brought forth intothe kingdom of Caesar, but in real-ity it is the Messiah and the Lordwho has come into the world.

mally and that sensation has returned tohis legs and feet. While Cristian Felice’smedical files require further examination, his physical improvement has been attestedto by doctors.

“On September 26, Cristian heard a voicethat drove him to climb Apparition Hill.He ascended the hill with his wife and twopriests. They were the ones to see himstand up [from his wheelchair]. They sawhim walk to the big statue that marks theexact spot where Our Lady first appearedto the visionaries. There they saw him cry,”Gazzetta del Sud writes.

Overwhelmed by what happened, CristianFelice is not ready to tell his story yet.Church authorities in Cosenza have beeninformed of his seeming cure, the regionalnewspaper Il Cirotano reports.

On October 5, a prayer vigil of thanksgiv-ing was held in Cristian Felice’s hometown.Applauded by 100 people, he arrived walk-ing along with his wife, with a rosary inhis hand.

ALS is deadly due to its breaking downthe motor neurons between the brain andspinal cord. When the motor neurons die,the brain’s ability to initiate and controlmuscle movement is lost. With voluntarymuscle action progressively affected, pa-tients in the later stages may become to-tally paralyzed.

Masses and that they lived that experiencethat was given to them. I was so impressedby that! Holy Mass every day, people inthe village were active and they were com-ing to the evening prayer program everyday. I witnessed many conversions of pil-grims and saw that young people werechanging. Young people were especiallyinfluenced by the Youth Festival and theywere more attracted by that.”

Fr. Romano and Fr. Mario came with afew other priests in a group organized byMrs. Bruna Calesso who has brought pil-grims for years to this shrine of Our Lady.Bruna came in 1983 for Christmas, andthat was her first visit. “A priest friend ofmy family invited me to look at some pic-tures from Medjugorje. I was so movedby that, so we made our trip in February1984. We came in two cars, and I washere with my husband and daughters, whileour friends were in the other car. It wasvery cold; the north wind made it evencolder. The first person we met was Fr.Slavko Barbaric. He found twelve of usand asked us where we came from, of-fered us some tea, and took us to the par-ish office. I came again in two months’time with my friends, and ever since thenI have come here for 140 times! Medjug-orje changed my life; I encountered Godhere. I was Christian before Medjugorje, went to the church, but that was just tradi-tional faith. I met the Lord here, started toknow more about Him, to follow Him, andI encountered Gospa as well.”

“Little children, today in a special way,Jesus desires to come to dwell in each ofyour hearts and to share with you your

every joy and pain. Therefore, little chil-dren, today in a special way, peer intoyour hearts and ask yourselves if thepeace and joy of the birth of Jesus havetruly taken hold of your hearts. Little chil-dren, do not live in darkness, aspire to-wards the light and towards God’s salva-tion. Children, decide for Jesus and giveHim your life and your hearts, becauseonly in this way will the Most High beable to work in you and through you.”

Romano came to Medjugorje as a spiri-tual director of a group of pilgrims, and hefelt that was one wonderful mission forhim: “It is a great grace to come toMedjugorje as a priest because we can wit-ness so many fruits of our faithful. I heardabout Medjugorje in 1982 for the first timeand came here in 1996. Back then, I alsocame as a spiritual director, and if I am notmistaken, this must be my thirteenth pil-grimage to the Queen of Peace.”

He sees many fruits of the apparitions inMedjugorje in his own parish, and manyother parishioners say the same about thefaithful in their parishes. “People come toMedjugorje and experience powerful ex-periences that change them. Many whohardly ever came to Holy Mass, start com-ing regularly to the church after their visitsto Medjugorje. That strong change in theirlives is so evident,” said Fr. Romano.

Fr. Mario, a priest for 46 years, came toMedjugorje in 1983 or in 1984 for the firsttime. “We drove on bad roads, there wereno signs for Medjugorje and it was veryhard to find it, but people came despitethat. I was very moved by the simplicityof life in Medjugorje. It was really obviousthat people were very devoted in Holy

German Pilgrim Travels toMedjugorje by Bicycle

Nov. 6, 2013

You’ve probably had a chance to hearmany stories of people who arrive toMedjugorje by various means of transport.Surely, one of the most interesting visitstook place in the end of October. A Ger-man pilgrim, Gerald Dany, who is 49 andlives in Slovakia at the moment, came toMedjugorje by bicycle. He heard aboutMedjugorje in 1989 for the first time dur-ing his visit to Belgium when he met oneCatholic family. Then, he went toMedjugorje in 1990. Just twelve days ago,he began his pilgrimage through Slovakia,Hungary, Croatia and Bosnia andHerzegovina, where he plans to stay for afew days. He said how he is very con-nected to Medjugorje and added: “Now Iwill continue my journey, and I want to goto Rome by bicycle. Most likely I will goto Spain afterwards and visit places of pil-grimage there.”

First Anniversary of Fr. PetarVlasic’s Death

pilgrim from Argentina, GisellaBarreto came to Medjugorje.

Gisella is a very famous person in Argen-tina and in the other countries of LatinAmerica as well. She won several beautycontests, became a TV hostess, and eventhough she lived in the world of glamour, none of that ever made her happy. Shecame to Medjugorje in 2010 as a result ofher mother’s desire, and that is when herworld started to change. She does notwork in the media anymore, she does notlive in the world of glamour, but she wit-nesses and teaches religion in schools. Shesaid how only now she feels happy andblessed in her life after so many years.Gisella told us that she came here to thankGospa in Medjugorje.

She said that her mother was always a pil-lar of faith in their family and that sheraised her four children in the faith. Shehad a beautiful childhood, but it all changedin the time of adolescence. That is whenshe was attracted to the world with all ofits challenges. Gisella was very pretty, andthat is when she entered the world of glam-our. She won at several contests and wasa semi-finalist at the contest for Miss Ar-gentina. “That life was seemingly nice andattractive; it was actually a true trap of the

world. I always looked unhappy, and mymom used to tell me to surrender all toGod. She was in Medjugorje on three oc-casions and showed me Our Lady fromMedjugorje and told me to thank her forall. It was after that visit to Medjugorjethat my life began to change. This is whereI understood that it is not enough just tobe a good person, but our soul needs to befilled with God. It was through the empti-ness in the heart that the world starts toenter within us.”

JJJJJohn Barwa, archbishop from Archdio-cese Cuttack Bhubaneswar in Odisha,

came recently in his first visit toMedjugorje. His archdiocese has 11 mil-lion people, and 70,000 are Catholics. Hecame to Medjugorje in a group of 43 Chi-nese, and some of them live in America,Canada, Malaysia and Hong Kong. Hesaid how Medjugorje is a place famous inthe whole world. “My first impressions arereally beautiful. This is a place whereMother Mary is truly present. People hereact according to that, with that feeling thatMary is our Mother, and they are preparedto share that experience with other pilgrims. That is why I am really proud ofMedjugorje and I am very happy. Confes-sions here are not superficial, but reallyprofound. As I spent time hearing confes-sions, I could feel that sincerity, depth, andthat is such a powerful experience. That iswhere we have conversions. Gospa is en-couraging us to conversion, confession, and I found all that here. People who didnot confess for years were able to do thathere, and that is how transformation withinthem is created,” said Archbishop Barwain his interview.

n Friday, November 8, 2013,Medjugorje celebrated the first an-

niversary of the death of the formerMedjugorje parish priest, Fr. Petar Vlasic.Fr. Petar died in his 75th year of life, inhis 51st year of priesthood. He served inthe various parishes as the parish vicar, the parish priest and the guardian of themonastery. He was the assistant parishpriest in Medjugorje from 1999-2007 andfinally the parish priest in Medjugorje fromAugust 25, 2007 until the day of his death. He was buried in Kovacica graveyard.

From an interview by June Klins,The Spirit of Medjugorje, Vol. 26, No 11

Within a year of his return fromMedjugorje, John left NBC and began toconcentrate on more faith-orientedprojects. He founded “The Mercy Foun-dation” to produce Catholic films and vid-eos. He began to discern the priesthood, but was still dating and caught up in hiscareer. It was not until he was in his thir-ties that he began to seriously consider thepriesthood. In 2008, John became “FriarJohn” when he was accepted into theFranciscans.

In that same year, 2008, when Friar John’smother died, he began to think more aboutthe afterlife. About three weeks after hismother died, he was in a chapel prayingfor her when he realized that there are somany souls who have no one to pray forthem. He began to think about others heknew who had died. A family friend namedMichael George, who died unexpectedly, came to mind. He prayed for him and said,“Michael, if you need a friend, I’ll behappy to pray for you.”

When he went back to his office andchecked his email, the only email that cameup read, “Michael George would like toknow if you will be his friend.” Friar Johnalmost fell off his chair! It turns out thatthe email was sent by a yearbook com-pany and somehow he was given the nameof Michael George, but the Michael Georgehe knew had died years before.

Friar John said this experience was a cata-lyst that led him to talk to priests and otherpeople about their thoughts on Purgatory. He found that many people are unclearabout Purgatory and its purposes. Aftermuch prayer, Friar John was given per-mission from his superiors to start a filmproject about Purgatory. Two years in themaking, Purgatory, The Forgotten Churchwas released in August 2013.

June Klins viewed the film and said thefilm was anything but scary. In fact, shefelt the love and mercy of God so deeplythat it brought her to tears. The film dealswith the four misconceptions about Pur-gatory, two of which are suicide and fire. You will have to view the film to learnabout these and the other two misconcep-tions. It is offered on page 6.

All-Beautiful MaryAll-Beautiful MaryAll-Beautiful MaryAll-Beautiful MaryAll-Beautiful MaryBy Pope Francis on December 8, 2013, Rome

Virgin most holy and immaculate,To you, the honor of our people, and the loving protector of

our city,do we turn with loving trust.

You are all-beautiful, O Mary!In you there is no sin.

Awaken in all of us a renewed desire for holiness:May the splendor of truth shine forth in our words, the song of charity resound in our works, purity and chastity

abide in our hearts and bodies, and the full beauty of the Gospel be evident in our lives.

You are all-beautiful, O Mary!In you the Word of God became flesh.

Help us always to heed the Lord’s voice:May we never be indifferent to the cry of the poor,or untouched by the sufferings of the sick and those in need;may we be sensitive to the loneliness of the elderly and the

vulnerability of children, and always love and cherish the life of every human being.

You are all-beautiful, O Mary!In you is the fullness of joy born of life with God.

Help us never to forget the meaning of our earthly journey:May the kindly light of faith illumine our days, the comforting power of hope direct our steps, the contagious warmth of love stir our hearts;and may our gaze be fixed on God, in whom true joy is found.

You are all-beautiful, O Mary!Hear our prayer, graciously hear our plea:

May the beauty of God’s merciful love in Jesusabide in our hearts,

and may this divine beauty save us, our cityand the entire world. Amen.

n 1993, John Clote was in his twen-ties and working in St. Louis. He de-scribed himself at the time as a

“nominal Catholic.” “I wouldn’t even sayI was attending Mass every Sunday with-out fail,” he said in an interview. Then oneday his sister gave him a newsletter aboutMedjugorje. He read it with interest andsuggested to the management at the NBCaffiliate where he worked that they do aseries on Medjugorje. Although they passedon the idea, John went on to Medjugorjeanyway. While in Medjugorje, John didnot experience any visions or anything outof the ordinary, but it became a time ofdeep and special reflection on his faith. “Itjust kind of galvanized my prayer life,” hesaid. “It brought me back to re-examiningand re-visiting my faith life, my prayer life.”The seed had been planted.
