we give thanks for the pleasure of gathering
together for this occasion.
We give thanks for this food prepared
by loving hands.
We give thanks for life, the freedom to enjoy it all,
and all other blessings.
As we partake of this food, we pray for health and
strength to carry on and try to live as You would
have us. This we ask in the name of Christ, Our
Heavenly Father.
Amen.

As you will read in today’s issue, our club has been hard at work
attending various inductions, renewing linkages, and activating out
interact clubs. You will also see that we were present at the Soropti-
mist of Mandaluyong induction, hanging garden planning, and
MHS interact club induction. More significantly, I’ve also sent
out the governor’s visit slides and our plans for the coming
year. One of our predominant project themes this year is that of
education support.
In this regard, our guest speaker today is a highly regarded leader in the educational field.
She is currently the Vice-President for Academic Affairs at Jose Rizal University, after retir-
ing from the University of the Philippines, the De La Salle University, and Far Eastern Uni-
versity. Dr. Barbara Wong-Fernandez proudly introduces herself as “thrice retired, but not
yet tired”.
She served as Vice-Chancellor for Student Affairs of U.P. Diliman from 1996-1999. She
moved to De La Salle University in 2000, and was appointed as Dean of the College of Edu-
cation from 2004 to 2007. That year, she retired from DLSUbut within two months, was
invited by Far Eastern University to be the Dean of the Institute of Education. In 2010, she
took on the position as Director of the University Research Center of FEU, and assumed the
position of Assistant Vice President for Academic Development for Far Eastern University
in 2011 until her retirement in February 2012.
A registered guidance counselor, she has been Chairperson of the Philippine Association for
Counselor Education, Research and Supervision (PACERS) and is President of the Philip-
pine International Friendship Organization (PIFO). Her major research interests and publica-
tions are in the area of education, student services management, multicultural counseling,
and disaster management.
She serves the Commission on Higher Education (CHED) as the Chair of the Technical
Committee on Guidance and Counseling, as well as member of the Technical Panel for So-
cial Sciences and Communication.
She brings her wealth of experience to us today as she speaks to us on the current status of K
-12 implementation. On behalf of the club, I thank Barbie for sharing her time and insights
as we strive to LIGHT UP ROTARY.
Cheers!

Transitions
Hello Fellow Rotarians! We are on our fourth regular meeting of our Club in
RY 2014-2015. August(o) is nearly upon us and so we bid farewell to July
soon.
First, I am happy to report that power has been restored completely both at
home and at work so things are back to normal. Apologies for the brevity of
my last Secretary’s Corner. I hope you will indulge me if I make up for it
this week.
July has been and continues to be a month of transitions. President Gion
and the rest of the officers and members of the RCM have been busy attending inductions of the differ-
ent RCs from within and outside our District. I had the pleasure of joining Pres.Gion, PE John and Rota-
ract District Chair PP Manny Tamayo at the Induction of INTERACT CLUB of Mandaluyong High
School (MHS). Kudos to Pres.Gion for delivering a brief but inspiring message to the young and ener-
getic INTERACTORS. It is truly satisfying to see how we can LIGHT UP ROTARY even in the lives of
the next generation of leaders. It was also good to meet the Club’s adviser Mrs. SalvacionMiranday and
their Prinicpal Mr. Rosarito A. Septimo who are our partners in service in MHS.
RC Bagumbayan celebrates its 35th Induction tonight and a good-sized contingent from RCM is slated to
attend to reciprocate our sister club’s gesture of friendship when a good number of their club officers
attended our 52nd Induction Ceremonies at the Manila Polo Club.
Much has been said about our most recent Induction Ceremonies. It was actually my first time to attend
our Club turnover so there is no way for me to compare it from those others that have gone before. But
from my vantage point, it was a HUGE success. I was proud to sit inand be part of the Governor’s visit
where Pres.Gion, ably assisted by his highly competent Board and supportive officers, masterfully out-
lined the roadmap of how RCM will LIGHT UP ROTARY this RY2014-2015. One of the things that
stood out from the Governor’s visit was RCM’s goal to increase membership by 15% or at least 5 mem-
bers. Governor Marilou politely asked RCM officers to bring an additional member each on top of the 5
set by the Club. Hope we can start inviting people to our meeting and start sharing what ROTARY is all
about. Now, if the Brazilain-inspired themed dance number was any measure of how the evening went,
it was definitely a home-run in my book. Again, congratulations to the Induction Committee and to
RCM for a job well done.
Don’t forget to check and LIKE our new Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/

I end with the traditional sign-off from one of my favorite radio programs called the Writer’s Almanac
hosted by Garrison Keillor which is quite apt for the ROTARIAN:
“Be well, do good work, and keep in touch.”

SWAY
When marimba rhythms start to play
Dance with me, make me sway
Like a lazy ocean hugs the shore
Hold me close, sway me more
Like a flower bending in the breeze
Bend with me, sway with ease
When we dance you have a way with me
Stay with me, sway with me
Other dancers may be on the floor
Dear, but my eyes will see only you
Only you have the magic technique
When we sway I go weak
15
SWAY
I can hear the sound of violins
Long before it begins
Make me thrill as only you know how
Sway me smooth, sway me now
Other dancers may be on the floor
Dear, but my eyes will see only you
Only you have the magic technique
When we sway I go weak
I can hear the sound of violins
Longer before it begins
Make me thrill as only you know how
Sway me smooth, sway me now
You know how
Sway me smooth, sway me now
