ChaplAin’s Corner

Perhaps the theme for this

new Pastoral Year at Saint

Patrick’s should be

“Challenge and

Opportunity.” We certainly

face many challenges here,

not the least of which is our

restoration project. This

summer, we discovered damage in the steeple

area – not expected – and at the time of this

writing we await the cost estimates for another

unplanned part of our work. This is, of course,

on top of all the work that is predicted –

totalling near $2 million. The opportunity is,

of course, how we choose to deal with the

challenges that are before us. As Pastor, I am

blessed with dedicated members of our

Pastoral and Finance Councils and at the same

time, I am confident that we can count on the

support of the Knights of Columbus as we

move closer to our 150th birthday in

2016. The opportunity is ours. It is up to all

of us to decide how we will respond!

Please know that you have my support and

prayers as we begin a new Fraternal Year. I

look forward to working with Grand Knight

Ian and all the members of the Executive, as

well as the entire membership of the Knights

as we work together to build on the successes

of the past, and forge ahead toward the future.

Fr. Steve

District Deputy Report

Here we are again starting our new fraternal year geared up and ready to get involved in council activities to promote our Order and show who we are as Knights. To help us along the way and appropriately our State of Ontario theme for this year is: We are all called to be good shepherds! Shepherds are servants who care for the sheep, and keep a watchful eye on the need of membership. They are leaders and responsible for all matters of the council. They are humble, welcoming and always open to new ideas and suggestions. Brother Knights let me share with you our State Deputy’s vision to this year’s theme. “Are we being good shepherds with our members and their families? Are we cultivating an environment where they can thrive? Are we looking after them? Are we using the Knights of Columbus to bring families back to the Church? Are we bringing in new members to make our councils stronger and more vibrant? Are we looking after our church and community? Are we feeding our flock? Let us continue ministering to those in need with our programs so that we inspire others with our Christian values through our actions. Let us bring more members to our order, so that they can put their faith into action. Let us be proactive with what we do in and for our order which is a mirror to what we believe as Catholics. “ Brother Mike Izza DD98

PARISH BBQ

The parish BBQ was held June 18th. This year 248 tickets were sold and the profit after

expenses amounted to $4064.00. Thank you to the Knights who helped out along with

the CWL to make the event a success.

Our State Convention is

behind us... councils from

all over Ontario came and

it was a showcase of talent

and programs like we have

not seen before.

On behalf of our State

Deputy, Bro Kevin and our

State Board, I wish to congratulate the council

on your 20th anniversary and we all wish you

much success in the future.

As the fraternal year draws to a close it is

essential the council officers make an

assessment of council operations to ensure the

effective programs for church and community

are in place.

We know that evaluation of activities is essential

to the long term success of the council to make

sure that they remain relevant to the interests of

the members and at the end of the fraternal year

is a good time to access our successes and what

we need to do better.

No matter how many members we recruit,

membership will not stay vibrant if we don’t

retain the members we already have in our

ranks. Effective council programs are the key

and as we all know, prospects don’t just walk up

to you and ask for a Form #100. It takes a

coordinated effort by the entire council to attract

eligible Catholic men and their families and this

is through our visible activity in the church and

community. If we don’t ask men to join, who

will? Similarly, retention doesn’t just happen,

either. Our active members today may not be

interested tomorrow unless we have programs

and activities that our brothers want to be

involved in and to be proud of.

It also takes a coordinated effort by the entire

council to make the new member and their

family know that they are an important part of

the council. If we don’t actively engage each

member, through our words and deeds,

eventually they will not see a place for

themselves in our council. We can’t allow that

to happen, we have too much to offer Catholic

men.

It is essential new members become active as

soon as they join and it can make or break the

enthusiasm the new member has when he comes

to that first meeting.

I congratulate the council on your year and wish

the next executive great success.

Brother Knights, as we close this fraternal year,

we see ourselves at the threshold of another

fraternal year and our continuing commitment to

the principles of the order is essential to our

success. Vivat Jesus.

Bro Bill Country, State Program Director,

Ontario State Council.

Bottle Drive

Our Council will be continuing our bottle drive for this new Fraternal Year. Please bring your empties

to our next meeting.

Membership Director

Welcome back to all our brother Knights and their families.

It’s September and time to get back to work or school after a relaxing

summer, back to another year of rewarding service as members of St.

Patrick’s Council. A strong and active Council will make our parish life

more meaningful and help to create a better environment within which to

increase our faith and raise our families. Let’s continue to make that

happen for the benefit of all.

I would like to thank all who worked hard in recruiting last year and

to those who believed in our vision and decided to join our Council. With your help we welcomed

8 new members to St. Patrick’s Council last year. We are now a team of 159 Knights with their

families, united by faith and a desire to help others. Last year we were a few short of our recruiting

target despite valiant efforts. This year let’s all strive to meet our goal of 20 new members.

The other pillar of Membership is Retention. All Knights join the Order feeling they can

make a positive difference in their lives and the lives of others. We need to help them realize that

goal. They need to feel welcomed, appreciated and engaged in our Council activities to the extent

they are able. To all our current members, we need you, your ideas and your involvement. Come

out to meetings and/or volunteer for activities when you can. We want to know you. If we are not

meeting your expectations, talk to someone about it – your sponsor, myself or any member of your

Executive.

Remember that recruiting is every Knight’s business. Our focus each year is getting

candidates for First Degrees in November, February, and May. As we did last year, we will start

with a Membership Blitz in October, manning information tables at all Masses to identify prospects

for further action. In addition to this group effort, it is extremely important that One-on-One

Recruiting occur throughout the year by all of us. Talk to your fellow parishioners about the

Knights, pass out Council Brochures to them, follow up with them in a week or so and forward

prospect names to myself. Help others to see how joining the Knights would benefit both them and

their families.

Sandy Duff, Membership Director

Raising Awareness About Life Insurance

Each September since 2003 has been designated as

Life Insurance Awareness Month. Like most

awareness-raising campaigns, Life Insurance

Awareness Month was created because there is an

overwhelming lack of understanding of life insurance,

its uses, its benefits, and its variations among the

general public. Each year, the Life Insurance Market

Research Association (LIMRA) puts out the results

from a recent survey, and unfortunately, the numbers

they report continue to be discouraging.

A recent survey found that more than 75 percent of

people polled did not have a personal financial advisor, even though 68 percent of them said

their opinion of the current economic conditions was somewhat unfavorable or very

unfavorable.

In other words, a majority of those surveyed were uncomfortable with the economy and the

uncertainty it brings, yet they did not seek professional assistance. Maybe they spoke with their

friends and family. Maybe they hoped the instability would go away on its own. Maybe they

did not know to whom to turn.

If you fall into this category, please remember that as a member of the Knights of Columbus,

you have a full-time, professional agent you can call your own. My primary responsibility is

the care and service of your family’s life insurance, retirement and long-term care needs. I’ll

answer your questions because I want your decisions to be informed ones. I want to help.

Another LIMRA statistic said 43 percent of people did not buy life insurance because they

worry about “making the wrong decision.” Talk with me, your agent, and afterwards you’ll

understand that the only wrong decision was not purchasing sooner to protect your family’s

future.

FROM THE FINANCIAL SECRETARY’S DESK

I received the following letter

from Fr. Joy.

Dear members of the K of C

Greetings and warm regards from Uganda. Hope that you are all fine

and things are going on well with you. How is life over there?

Thanks for the good work that you are doing for the people of God.

I am also fine here and things are

going on well for me.

The church construction is moving on slowly as we are approach-ing the final stages of its completion.

I am happy to tell you that with the money that you have sent me,

we are making three windows for the church. We are making simple windows frames with steel and then fix ordi-

nary coloured glasses.

We are making the window frame now and the glasses will be put later when we do the finishing works of the church. If we put the glasses now, it may break as the other works are going on at

the same time.

Since we have almost 50 windows for the new church, we cannot think of going for window glasses with images or pictures. It will

cost a lot of money for that.

Otherwise we have completed roofing work and all the bricks work. At the moment we are putting coloured stones on the floor

of the church.(these stones available locally)

Thanks a lot for your generous help and we are very grateful for this timely help. We promise you all our humble prayers.

Thanking you and praying for you all

THANK YOU

Dear Brother Knights:

I may not look great, but feeling about 100%, and things will get better sooner rather than later.

Had my 38th Radiation session on Thursday August 7, 2014, so glad that it is over. Prostate cancer is gone!

Next will be the operation on my left kidney, but NO Radiation of Chemotherapy involved, and that will, be done

by late August by Surgeon Dr. Pierre.??

The Radiation Therapists blew bubbles for me, and I RANG the bell letting them know my sessions were

OVER

Thanks for all the prayers, because they sure helped me to get through this ordeal.

St. Anne’s Barbecue

The 3-2-1 barbecue was held Wednesday Sept 17th at St. Anne’s school. Our Council barbecued

dinner for the parents and families attending the Meet the Teacher evening. Approximately 850

meals were served. The meal consisted of a $3.00 hamburger $2.00 hotdog and a $1.00 drink. The

barbecue was a success and the comments received from parents and staff were very positive.

This was a great opportunity of Community Outreach for both our Council and St. Patrick’s Church.

I would like to thank Fr. Steve for attending and working the crowd, our PGK Gerry Hogan for

being the driving force behind the event and DGK Mike Warren for helping our PGK.

I would also like to thank Allen Galachiuk for organizing the cooking and serving crews who

managed to have the food cooked and served in a timely manner. I would also like to thank the

following Knights who helped make the evening a success:

Gerry Hogan, Ryan Sandul, Mickey Goulet, Mike Issa, Mike McLinton, Mike McLaughlin, Allan

Power and his son Big Ben, Ron Gervais, Bob Hoganson, Joe Kennedy, Tony Pignat, Sandy Duff,

Ken Hopkins, Vic Albota, Jim Smith, Mike Warren , Allen Galachiuk, Bob Taylor, Ian Sheppard.

We were able to raise money for both the Church Restoration and St. Anne’s school. The details

will be presented at our next General Meeting on October 7 th.
