Principal’s Message Curriculum P-2- School is very busy in the P-2 classroom. We are all trying very hard to remember all the routines and rules, as well as working together as a group. In English, the Preps are continuing to learn about letters, words and how they are used in books. We are also learning about the structure of simple sentences and the importance of the sounds we hear in the words we want to write. The Year 1 and 2 children are working through the construction of an oral presentation based on the main character of a book and an emotion he or she shows in the events of the story. The children will present these next week. The children are enjoying looking after their seeds in science. We are investigating where they grow best in a cupboard, in the full sun or in the shade. It was 44 degrees in the full sun yesterday!!!!! Go seeds go! Mrs Forrest Year 3-6 Welcome to week 4 of the school year. We are fully underway now and it is great to welcome all our new and returning families back to school. Those parents who have not yet purchased all the items for school, please do so shortly as being prepared for each day helps students be organised and achieve better understanding. Homework is now up and operating. Students have to learn their words, read a book and complete some mathematics question. We ask parents to sign to say your child has completed their homework during the week. If your child is struggling with some of the work, please get them to see a teacher in the morning or at lunch as support is being provided. Students are continuing to learn about narratives and persuasion in English, and number and place value as well as patterns and algebra in Mathematics. In Science students have started growing beans in the unit titled Biology Good to Grow. Students have also started learning about geographical features in Geography. In History we are looking at difference between celebrations and commemorations as well as settlements and colonies. P-2- School is very busy in the P-2 classroom. We are all trying very hard to

remember all the routines and rules, as well as working together as a group. In

P&C The Leyburn SS P&C AGM will be held on the 6th of March. Take the time to join the P&C as they provid extra funds and support to the school to achieve a variety of outcomes. The P&C is one very important way you can voice your opinion within the school, as well as know and learn about the school initiatives, processes and direction. This year is a very important year for the school with our Quadrennial School Review (QSR). This will entail setting the direction and focus of the school for the next 4 years. The P&C is consulted heavily during this time and all community members are welcome to express their opinions, listen to ideas and influence learning environment for your children. I look forward to welcoming all new and returning members on the 6th of March for the AGM and the general meeting that follows. Attendance Our attendance for the first few weeks is at 91.3%. This is below the state target of 92%. This year the school will be focusing on student attendance, arriving at school on time and being prepared for learning. This is because every day counts for students to be at school. If you are struggling with your children attending school contact us to discuss solutions to the problems. Bus Times Hopefully all parents are aware of the new bus transport times. The bus is arriving at school between 8.30 and 8.45 and departing in the afternoons before 3.15. We ask parents to discuss safe travelling to school with all children as students need to be aware when crossing the road and making sure to be safe when doing so. The school will keep gate duty for the foreseeable future. We ask parents who are concerned to walk their children across the road to the school. If you have any concerns or questions please contact the school to discuss the matter. School Mobile / Contact The number is 0472 845 910. The mobile will be used by the school to receive and send text messages, communicate with parents when the students are off site and as an alternate contact phone number. Please be aware that the school phone number of 07 46950172 is the primary contact and should still be used first in all instances. Swimming Each Wednesday all parents are asked to make sure their child has their, togs, swimmers, towel and swim shirt. If students don’t have these items they will not be allowed to swim. It is also recommended that students have goggles and a

swim cap if they have long hair. Free swimming will also be on Friday afternoon as part of rewards and sport. Students may be required to complete activities during this time if they have not done so during the week. Student Cards Please be aware that each newsletter was sent home with a copy of the current enrolment details for each child attending school. Take the time to check each sheet, make and adjustments if required, sign and return to the school office by 22nd of February. It is very important for us to have this information up to date and correct, especially in case of emergencies. School Works Over the holidays there were some identified works around the school through our maintenance schedule and other emergency work. As the term progresses more builders and trades men will be around the school. We ask parents and students to keep their distance and be aware of safety when they are operational during school times. While appropriate safety measures will be in place we ask parents to help children be aware of keeping away from interesting activities they may see. You will notice two trees have been removed from the front of the school due to storm damage. Work to reinstate this garden will happen as the year progresses. Other planned work is the reinstallation of showers at the boy’s amenities at the pool, installation of a shad structure over the sand pit area and installing a drainage bubbler near the walkway. Please be aware that this may at times cause disruptions to normal school programs. Playgroup

Playgroup activities -Last Week the children learnt

the letter A and B for bird. Children done a wonderful

Bird collage artwork with gluing and pasting cut-out newspaper and texture paper. Tracing the letter A & B with coloured pencils. This week we will be finishing the cover of their Scrap Book and practicing their fine motor skill with curved line tracing activities. The letter of this week will be the Letter C. It will include finger-painting carrots.

Please remember that the weather is heating up and to wear protective clothing and bring your hat.

New members are welcome to come and enjoy. Please bring morning tea for your children to have during their break. All community members are welcomed to attend playgroup. It is held each Wednesday from 9.00am – 11.00am. If you would like more information please contact the school office.

Are you a Great Dad?

Statistics show an increasing number of children have no father figure in their lives, and often if they have a dad, step dad or male role model they are far from a positive influence. If you feel that you could improve your role as the father in the family, then perhaps you should check out the course running in Gatton. Good to Great Father Course (by Dads 4 Kids). Gatton School Chaplain Tim Ormiston will be facilitating this 10 week program on Wednesday evenings starting mid-February. For more details, you can contact Tim on 0400 816939 Last week’s Gatton Star featured an article about the course on page 7. Quotes from Google- I’m as lucky as can be, for the world’s best dad belongs to me. Some people don’t believe in heroes, but they haven’t met my dad A daughter needs a dad to be the standard against which she will judge all men. Finally …be the dad every child wishes they had.

For community groups who wish to include notices within the school newsletter, please have them typed and emailed to the school at [email protected] or by 12.00 Noon the Tuesday prior.
