Principal’s Message Curriculum Year P-2 -Welcome to the last week of 2017, and what a year it has been. The children have all progressed so far since the start of the year. I would love to take this opportunity to thank the wonderful volunteer ladies who have assisted Robyn, Alison, Angela and I in the classroom. Noreen, Shannon, and Ma Parkes your constant presence in our classroom has been thoroughly appreciated. The work you do with the children to enhance their education and the time you take to be part of our learning community is beyond words. Thanks must also go to our parents and caregivers who do so much to ensure the children come to school ready to learn. I would like to wish everyone a Very Merry Christmas with a restful and safe holiday time with your family. I will look forward to 2018. Year 3-6 – Welcome to Term 4, Week 10. Students are well into practice for our end of year concert. They are learning a few plays, practicing some songs and perhaps making some dances. We endeavour to have students technology assignments also finished but with everything happening this week we may not get them out before the end of the year! We’ll continue to work through and hopefully we will get there. Arrival at school Please be aware that students should not be arriving at school before 8.30am. Some students are continually arriving before then. Please be aware that we may not be able to provide supervision before this time. Farewell I would like to take this opportunity to farewell Madam Symonds. She is retiring at the end of this year. Leyburn SS would like to thank her for all the work she has done over the past years and wish her all the best for her next stage in life. Au revoir Madam Symonds.

School Review / Quadrennial School Review The QRS process has been approved by the P&C and Assistant Regional Director. This will now form the schools direction through the next 4 years. Copies will be sent home soon, as well as being made available on the school website. Year 6 Dinner This year the Year 6 dinner was held at the CWA hall. It was a great relaxed night where there was some laughter and reflections of the progress our year 6 students have made over their time at Leyburn SS. I wish to thank the staff for setting up, the Royal Hotel for the catering, the P&C for delivery of the food, the CWA for the use of the hall and dinner items; and lastly all the community members who helped clean up. It was a special night and I hope the year 6 students know how special they are.

End of Year Concert The end of year concert will be held again at Leyburn SS on Thursday 7th of December. Due to the weather we are looking at having two options. 1 – a marquee to accommodate all attendees. 2- the use of the p-2 classroom in case of bad weather. The final decision of venue will be decided on the night depending on how much it rains! The P&C will have a BBQ from 5.30pm for families to have a bite to eat before the concert and presentation part of the evening. The concert will start at 6.00pm sharp. Families are asked to bring a plate of food to share for supper after the event.. Attendance Our attendance for term 4 is currently 92.1% and 91.6% for the year. Thank you to those parents and students who have put in the effort to reach our targets. Every day does count. Report Cards Last week report cards went out to all families. If you have not received yours please contact the school to organise another copy. Parent teacher interview notes and booklists for 2018 were also included with the report cards. If you have any questions please contact the school office. 2018 The school year will begin on Monday 22nd January. Please make sure to have all stationary items ready for the first day as we spend time setting up the class and routines. Please also make sure all items are clearly marked. Next year we are looking at all children in year 3-6 undertaking LOTE. This is due to Madam Symonds retirement and other possible options for LOTE in 2018. Next year there may be a different teacher, different language or students engaged in online learning. Decisions will be made over the holidays. If you have any preference for languages or mediums for delivery please contact the school to put forward your ideas. School Works Over the holiday period there will be some works happening around the school with fencing and toilet installation. This work may continue through into term 1 next year. Happy Holidays I would like to thank all community members for your support over the past year. It has been very busy and gone so quickly. It is the community that teachers a child to become an adult and I thank everyone for doing their part.

Congratulations to all students that participated in this years swimming carnival.

All children participated in todays end of term Rewards day. It was a fun filled afternoon of crazy hair, sausage sizzle and water games. Fun enjoyed by all.

Peace is a wonderful thing to have. Whether it is personal peace of mind or the absence of conflict. Even if we choose to live at peace, there are times that we can't avoid it. If we are attacked, we are no longer in a peaceful environment. A positive response to another person who is aggressive can often have a soothing effect. Speaking quietly and with kindness can give an angry person a moment to calm down and compose themselves. Unfortunately if another nation were to declare war on us then no matter how much you smile, it's unlikely to avert conflict. However smiling when possible will help you and others to deal with any negative emotions. There is a lot to be said for the song lyrics ' brighten the corner where you are'. Quotes 'A time to love, and a time to hate; a time of war and a time of peace' The Bible. Forgiving others brings inner peace. Sometimes peace is better than being right. Finally... don't let others control your peace!
