First a building update. Yes, we are edging closer to gaining access to the new classrooms and facilities. An unfortunate water leakage in December has meant some additional time to repair the damage, and that has created delays. We are very sorry, but recognize that some things are out of our hands. We are excited about accessing this wonderful new addition to our teaching and learning physical environment. The anticipation is building and I recognize that I have to curb my impatience—just like we remind the students! I believe they will find it worth waiting for.

In the meantime, we are already making use of the new parking lot at the front of the building. It has become a welcome site for many. We will have to vacate it for a day or two when they come to paint the lines, (which is a weather-dependent task), but I am pleased to see it in use already. But continuing on with the safety focus, we would remind everyone to back into parking places, rather than going “nose-in.” It provides a much safer exit if you back in as the driver can more easily see if there are pedestrians in harm’s way. As most of our “pedestrians” in the parking areas are little people, it is even more important to use every safety tool available. When you drive past any of the oil industry parking lots, you can see that they also follow this valuable safety recommendation.

The extra space will come at a good time for ISS—the month of January brought us over 20 new students. Today we are at 765 students, with more on the way! We send a very special welcome to our new students and we are keen to help them transition in as smoothly as possible. Helping their parents integrate as easily as possible into their new school home is something we think about as well. And this year, ISS and the Parent Association are doing—in my opinion—an even better job than ever before in assisting our new families.

Between the ISS Admissions & Communications Officer, Katharine Mudra, and the PA Welcoming and Hospitality Committee, which includes Renathe Havsteen, Charlotte Smit-Veeger and Francesca Dijkgraaf-Pace, there is a much more structured method to assist new families along every step of the admissions and settling in process. The PA has appointed a number of country representatives, (and welcomes more volunteers), to extend a welcoming hand to newcomers from the same nation. The Welcoming and Hospitality Committee also holds regular coffee meetings for new families. These are a “chance to meet other parents, learn about the local community, ask questions about how to get around Stavanger (and where to find what), hear about the various activities available for your children and bring up any question new parents may wish to discuss.”

And while I am writing about the Parent Association, let me add another plug for the upcoming International

Festival—it will be another great extravaganza! Thank you for supporting the PA and enjoying the whole process by both attending and ALSO considering signing up to assist as a volunteer!

Another great resource for new, (and not so new), families can be found at the Expat Center at the Stavanger Chamber of Commerce. Here is a great upcoming session they are offering for free:

Also check to see if the College/University you are planning to apply to requires the SAT II Subject Tests. Sometimes the ACT Plus will be accepted in place of the SAT II Tests. If specific subject tests are required then it is recommended that you take these during the fall semester of your senior year. The SAT Subject Tests may not be taken on the same date as the SAT Reasoning Test.

More information was given at the Junior Seminars which started on January 27th.

To register online for the SAT exam to be offered here at ISS on May 5, 2012, go to www.collegeboard.com The registration deadline is April 6, 2012.

Calling all TuTors!

One of the many services offered by the High School Counseling Office is the maintenance of a list of names of parents who are both willing and able to serve as tutors to ISS students in need of additional academic support.

As our demand for tutors is greater than our supply, we would like to invite parents with backgrounds in core academic areas - especially in MATHEMATHICS and SCIENCE - to join our pool of mentors/tutors.

If you are interested in assisting, please contact Dr. Kim Caroline-Strange at 51 55 43 13 or KCaroline-Strange@isstavanger. no

The Counseling Office provides a list of area tutors as a courtesy to ISS students and their parents. All sched-uling and private tuition arrangements are the sole re-sponsibility of the tutor and student.

News from the Exams Coordinator

At this time of year, 10th grade students are making subject choices for their International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma courses in 11th and 12th grade.

At ISS, we strongly encourage all students to partici-pate in the full IB Diploma programme as we consider it to be an outstanding educational opportunity, and an excellent preparation for university and the world of work.

It is interesting, however, to get the students’ perspec-tive on the IB programmes, and in ‘IB World’ this month, the results of a survey of more than 1100 IB students from around the world was published.

Asked ‘which word best describes the IB programme you are currently studying?’ 24% answered ‘academic’ 24% ‘challenging’18% ‘international’14% ‘creative’ and 14% ‘rewarding’.

Asked ‘what are the most important qualities for an IB student?’ the largest number of students answered ‘hard work’, then followed ‘academic excellence’ and ‘time management’. Other students answered ‘creativ-ity’, ‘teamwork’ or an ‘international outlook’.

With students emphasizing the need for ‘hard work’, ‘academic excellence’, and ‘time management’ (and identifying the key aspects of the programme as ‘aca-demic’ and ‘challenging’), I have been asked whether this is a suitable programme for almost all our students. Results from May 2011 show that of those taking the IB Diploma at ISS, 85.4% achieved the Diploma – this was 74.5% of the whole graduating class (as some stu-dents were unable or chose not to take the full Diploma because, for example, they transferred to ISS only for their final year). The overall pass rate for the IB Di-ploma worldwide in May 2011 was 77.99% (The IB Diploma Programme Statistical Bulletin).

As very many schools around the world select only the most aca-demically successful students to take the IB Diploma programme, the results from ISS are, in my view, extremely impressive.

I believe that these results support our policy of an in-clusive approach to the programme. Of course, there is a ‘heavy workload’ (identified as the worst aspect of IB in the student survey!) and both the students and their teachers need to be aware of this, and work together to manage this challenge. For the school administration and the teachers, planning how the various demands of the programme fit into the calendar is important, and for the students keeping organized and respecting the stated due dates are the key!

A selection of comments from students shows that they value the challenges of the IB: ‘I believe it is the future of learning for students. It can be challenging but I think it is rewarding.’ ‘The IB does not just attempt to stuff facts into the student’s mind; it invigorates a love for the subject and a deep intellectual understanding.’ ‘It’s an amazing curriculum that prepares you to face higher education at university.’

And finally: ‘I think therefore IB.’

The IB describes the Diploma programme as ‘an aca-demically challenging and balanced programme of education … that prepares students for success at uni-versity and life beyond’ but more than that, as the IB mission statement declares, it ‘aims to develop inquir-ing, knowledgeable and caring young people who help to create a better and more peaceful world through in-tercultural understanding and respect’.

We should never forget these wider aims –they are why I wholeheartedly support the IB Diploma programme at ISS.

Can I take this opportunity to wish you all a happy new year and all the very best educationally as we start the second semester.

Semester reports have now been sent home and High School Parent/Student – Teacher Conferences are due to take place on Monday 13th and Tuesday 14th February. You will note that we are now reporting student absences and tardies on our semester reports. It is really important that your son/daughter sign in at the office if they are delayed coming to school in the morning so we can record them present rather than absent. I ask you to communicate with the office in regard to the nature of any absences. I thank you for your support with this.

Typically over the coming months much of the initial planning for next year’s schedule takes place and as a part of this process students will be confirming course choices for next academic year. For students currently in grades 9 and 11 this will mainly involve reviewing elective choices however for students in grades 8 and 10 there are major decisions to be made in regards to courses that they will follow for two years.

We have already conducted our IB Information Evening for students who will be transitioning into

grade 11 next year, and there are further events to follow which are outlined below:

College NightThursday 9th February 6:00pm to 8:00pm

Whilst this event is aimed at 11th graders, it is open to any student and parent who would like to learn more about the process of choosing, applying to and securing a good university place—especially in the UK or North America.

Grade 8 to 9 Transition MeetingThursday 16th February 18:00 to 20:00 - (Theatre)

Towards the end of February we will also be starting to schedule events to assist our grade 8 students with their transition to the high school. We have an information evening planned for Thursday 16th February between 6:00pm & 8:00pm in the Lovelace Theatre and information will be sent home in a separate e-mail to parents and students.

For students entering into grade 9 next year, Norwegian has become a compulsory subject for all

Grade 9 to10 Information AfternoonThursday 1st March 15:30 – 16.30

Finally on Thursday 1st March there will be an opportunity for 9th grade students and parents to clarify any choices that need to be made when moving from grade 9 into 10. Most of these choices will already be in place from grade 9 and as such we have scheduled a short meeting for students and parents who might have any questions.

High School Round Table

On Thursday 19th January we held our High School Principal Round Table meeting. There were some great discussion on a number of topic areas and following is an outlined of some of the areas discussed:

Initially we discussed how predicted grades used in UCAS applications and the key points are as follows. Predicted grades are based on student performance over the course of grade 11 and the first part of grade 12. Teachers are asked to provide a realistic yet optimistic prediction. Students are also advised to ensure they select a good safety school as part of their choices as although universities provide typical IB offer scores for entrance into specific courses on their websites, these are not necessarily the scores that they will offer individual students .

As part of our high school programme we have a junior (11th Grade) and senior (12th Grade) seminar programme that guides students through this process and the application process to colleges/universities in a wide range of countries. So far this year our current grade 12 students are applying to the following countries:

Australia, Canada, Denmark, France, Indonesia, The Netherlands, Norway, Poland, Singapore, Spain Sweden, UK & USA.

We have a few students who are looking to take a gap year before going off to college and students also taking military training. As you can see there is great diversity within our graduating class.

More information will be provided at out college

H i g h S c h o o l N E W Snight outlined above.

At the round table we also discussed the breadth and nature of after school activities. At ISS all our teachers are involved in our extra-curricular programmes. In our last survey in 2009, the high school students rated their opportunity to participate in extra-curricular activities as one of the top six with 80% of them providing a positive response.

In recent years, International Award has been added along with a Math competition group (with students taking part in a competitive event in Milan between 3rd and the 5th of Feb). Students in grades 11 and 12 have also run an increasing number of CAS clubs and activities.

We are always looking to provide opportunities to develop both inside and outside of the classroom as at the beginning of each year when presenting the clubs and activities that are on offer in the High School, we invite students to suggest and establish additional clubs or activities. Provided there are enough students to start an activity and we can have a faculty supervisor, we have

the capacity to enhance our offerings.

At the meeting there was a suggestion to look into some academic activities similar to the Math competition initiative and it is something that I am currently looking into.

In closing, I would like to pay tribute to all those who contributed to the Cameroon Service Project Candle Light Dinner. It was an incredible evening and a great fundraiser in support of a deserving cause.

That’s all for this edition,

Is changing at ISS.…

2012 heralds the start of some exciting progression within the Design and Technology Department at ISS. We are in the midst of planning a radical overhaul of all of the departmental facilities to include state of the art machinery which will be integrated fully into the Middle and High School programs.

Whilst all this is being organized the students have been busy on their project work with their newly arrived teacher, Mrs. Crump. Both MS and HS have been working hard to produce their practical pieces including card portfolios, rice measuring machines, mechanically opening boxes and vehicles powered by mousetraps, so watch out!

ISMTF JUNIOR MATH COMPETITION 3 – 5 FEB, 2012

The ISMTF (Internatinal Schools Mathematics Teachers Foundation) is a nonprofit foundation whose purpose is to provide support in the enrichment of teaching and learning of mathematics at international schools, nurture exchange of experiences among mathematics educators, and to help generate interest in and enthusiasm for mathematics among students of these schools.

http://www.ismtf.org/

Konstantin Zirkelbach, Jon Arne Toft and Abiwinanda Nyoman are members of the first ISS Junior math team which participated in a ISMTF Junior Math Competition .

This year the competition was hosted by the American School of Milan from 3 to 5 February. There were 48 international schools and 271 students in all.

I am happy to report that Jon Arne Toft won the 5th place in the Individual competition.

In the chase competition (teams of 4 or 5 from different schools) Abiwinanda Nyoman was a member of the winning team.

All the three students did a fantastic job and had a super time in both the competition and Milan.

Primary School NewsWe have had wonderful holiday celebrations, enjoyed assemblies, concerts and Primary School musical, celebrated the 100th day of school, lived with the rain and wind of December and January to then enjoy the snow of the last weeks, and now see the days getting longer. We are looking forward to the fun of winter and the joy and changes that spring will bring.

Please mark your calendars to include 17 February as Student-led Conference Day. In a student-led conference, more responsibility is placed on the child to reflect on learning. Your child takes time in class to prepare and time will be taken to look for evidence of learning by finding examples that show improvement and growth. The student reflects on past achievement to set learning goals.

This opportunity gives your child an active and meaningful role in reviewing and reflecting on learning. Thank you for joining us on this important day. You should have received a letter with a time to come to school. Please contact teachers individually beforehand if you would like to meet with them in addition to your child’s appointment.

The admissions process for Pre-School has started. If your child is three years of age before 1 September or four years of age before 1 September and you would like your child to enroll in ISS Pre-School 3

or Pre-School 4, I encourage you to apply, as spaces are limited for these age groups, by contacting our Admissions Officer Katherine Mudra at [email protected] .

There will also be a Primary School roundtable discussion, 8:45-9:45, Tuesday, 6 March. This is a time to have an open discussion about school with the principal. Everyone is welcome. Sometimes two people come; other times 20 parents take part in the discussion. We discuss ideas in general, not individual issues.

Grade 5 students will be at outdoor education week at Gullingen Leirskole, 19-23 March. This is a fantastic trip when students learn about Norway in a very hands-on way. They also learn how to cross-country ski and build skills both in working independently and as a team.

Winter Week and Easter holidays are coming soon. Please keep family holidays to those days when school is not in session as students who are present are affected when children in the classes are away.

ISS Sports NewsWelcome to the winter in Stavanger. It is a good thing our sports have moved indoors during this season. We have been watching our teams develop throughout the later months of 2011 and we can see some major improvement in skills and team spirit arising form the basketball court and the swimming lanes. Basketball fills our gym every day after school. With all the efforts and determination, I want to especially congratulate the middle school girls team for having given us a wonderful victory over our local rival SBBK this past week. I also want to commend both the boys and girls varsity for their community spirit this season.

On many Fridays after school we can see the Vikings carry heavy loads of books or finding other ways to help others. Ladies and Gentlemen, it is nice to see you out there helping not only your team but the entire ISS community.

Both girls and boys Varsity and JV teams are competing against local teams on average about once a week. And we know that the competition is challenging sometimes, but nevertheless the boys and girls never give up. They keep their heads up. All the coaches and I agree that the members are growing so much as athletes, teams and individuals. The swimming team has also been working hard in the pool on Tuesdays and Thursdays this season in order to prepare for the NECIS Swim tournament that will be held here in Stavanger on the 23rd and

24th of March. Coach Hettema and her team praise the individual effort of each swimmer. I also want to congratulate Alec Karlsen and Taddeo Toffanin for winning the logo competition of our NECIS swim meet. Gentlemen--your work will be appreciated in ten different international school communities. Our varsity boys and girls have found out who is going to the NECIS basketball tournament in Antwerp, Belgium on March 8. The boys and girls teams have worked very hard to be where they are at right now. The next hurdle will be our NECIS tournament, which will be a fantastic opportunity to play three days of basketball against ten other schools from 0800 in the morning to 1900 at night defending the pride and name of the ISS Vikings. Our two fantastic coaches guiding them on the journey are Mr. Armstrong for the boys and Mr. Russell for the girls. I would like to dedicate this quote to all our athletes and coaches to contemplate: “Keep your dreams alive. Understand to achieve anything requires faith and belief in yourself, vision, hard work, determination, and dedication. Remember all things are possible for those who believe.”

(Gail Devers).

Go Vikings !!

News from the Health, Security, Safety and Environment (HSSE) Committee

Ms Sølve Ims Ottesen [email protected]

When we had the last emergency evacuation in December, the weather was extreme, and it made us think of other possibilities in lining up under shelter in bad weather. This is now tested out, and we have established new routines for this. Even if the most important still is to evacuate everyone as fast as possible, we do not want anyone to catch cold. We have also provided blankets for the youngest one. In January, we had a safety audit in the storage room for the theatre. This room has a tendency to be overcrowded and untidy. The area is used by many individuals and clarifying responsibility is important. The most important is tidy up and dispose of all equipment that does not have “an owner”. This clearing will take place in February. Next step will be to organize the work with a clear responsibility. The extension work approaches an end. Before taking over the new building, the HSSE committee will have an inspection to ensure everything is safe. As you have seen, the new parking area is asphalted, and we have got a good number of new parking lots.

I will remind you again to reverse in to the lot. This is because this is the safest way – your back window is clear and you have a good understanding of the traffic situation. Finally, I wish you a safe winter holiday, return in good shape after a week with a lot of fresh air.

The ISS Vision StatementThe ISS vision is to prepare students for greater glob-al participation by helping them become responsi-ble, empowered learners.

The ISS Mission StatementThe International School of Stavanger is dedicated to providing its students with English language education in a supportive, academically stimulating, and multi-cultural environment. We strive to fos-ter a love of learning, the development of individual skills and talents, and an awareness of the value each person has to society. Our goal is to enable students to succeed in continuing educational programs and to live as responsible and contributing citizens in the global community.

The International School of Stavanger (ISS), founded in 1966, is an independent, non-profit Norwegian foundation accredited by the New England Association of Schools and Colleges and the Council of Interna-tional Schools. The school enrolls students from ages 3 through 18. ISS offers an international university preparatory curriculum that combines the best features of many national educational systems. Both the Inter-national Baccalaureate Diploma programme and the International General Certificate of Secondary Educa-tion external examinations are available to students.

In 2011, the school has an enrollment of over 740 students who represent nearly 50 nationalities, includ-ing students from six of the earth’s seven continents.
