From the Editor

F ebruary. What is it good for? There’s nothing to do but moan. Well, if that’s the case, why not participate in the one pastime in which England still

dominates the world? Have a good moan! You know you’re going to anyway, so why not enjoy it? ‘Global warming? Hah! It just gets colder.’ ‘No wonder we can’t win at cricket – the whole team’s run by South Africans.’ ‘Another year, another ache.’ ‘We can’t even beat the Italians at rugby now!’ ‘Just what are these Los Kiosk Bear things anyway?’ ‘…and don’t even get me started on our national football team!’ Fun, isn’t it?

After all, it’ll soon be March and the return of optimism: ‘Aren’t the crocuses magnificent this year?’ ‘The Aussies are for it in the Ashes this year.’ ‘The spring sun warms the soul.’ ‘England take the Triple Crown against all predictions!’ ‘Another fine performance by Los Kiosk Bears at the Comrades.’ (Sorry – the glass is still half empty over the footie…)

And if all that wasn’t enough, there’s the PTA panto, Robin Hood. (Oh yes there is, now stop arguing.) This has got to be great – after all, it’s named after the Cockney rhyming slang for ‘good’! (Note to self: check that the slang came first – doesn’t seem quite right.) See you there! ■

2009 should prove to be the defining year for the Centre, during which we establish both its likely cost,

and what finances we are able to call on. The revised (and now finalised) plans have been well received by both the community and, unofficially at this stage, by East Cambs District Council planning department. As a result we can proceed to meet with the architect and an appointed quantity surveyor, to derive likely costs.

Our grant seeking sub-committee is in informal discussions with potential grant sources, and applications will be made after costs have been established and, by necessity in most cases, after planning permission has been received. In parallel with these activities we are also in the process of producing both a website and a brochure, which

we hope will help to encourage donations. We are also considering a special Informer edition with the same aim in mind; it remains imperative for us to maximise donations.

More fundraising activities are at the planning stage, and will be made known to you in due course. If you have any ideas for raising money then please contact Tim Washtell, telephone 01638 780378, email [email protected]. We would also welcome any volunteers to help our fundraisers, and Tim would love to hear from you.

That’s about it for now – a short resumé of a hugeamount of work to be undertaken.

Finally, thank you to the Girl Guides for your generous donation. Such gestures of community support give us added motivation. Philip Aspland,

their run-up to this year’s Gala, on Saturday 4th July.

To ensure that we are able to carry on in future years, we do need more people to join us. In particular we are looking for a Minutes Secretary. The position is not onerous, but is very important. If you

would like to be involved do come along. We usually meet at 8pm on the third Monday in each

month at the Comrades Club, although the next meeting will be on Monday 23rd February.

The High Street Church, who have provided refreshments for the past two years, have indicated that they do not wish to carry on this year, so if any group, or joint groups, in the village would like to provide this service, and make money for their organisation, please contact me.

Fred Preece (Chairman), 94 The Causeway, Isleham 01638 780734.

N ew Year 2009 has seen the opening of a local private GP service based in Isleham. At

a time when the demand for private healthcare is increasing, Dr Chris Corbin fulfils a lifelong ambition by offering discreet, individual private family care services of the highest possible quality, ably assisted by his wife Marianne. The Healthcare Commission has recently granted him unconditional registration after thorough and detailed inspection.

The Doctor Finlay feel of the surgery is conveyed by the quiet and comfortable ground floor consulting room at his home, where you see Dr Corbin pictured. At the same time, the technology is right up to date. Not only is there a broad range of diagnostic equipment in place here, minimising the need for further opinion or procedures elsewhere, but a very comprehensive range of blood tests and other pathology samples are sent to The Doctors Laboratory (TDL) in London, who report very promptly direct to Dr Corbin’s computer system. In fact, with a stock of the most commonly needed medicines, he hopes to be a one-stop solution to most medical needs

Appointments can be made to see Dr Corbin at various times between 7am and 7pm on weekdays, as well as on Saturday morning. The opportunity to see a doctor early in the day is likely to appeal both to busy self-employed people and to commuters. The house is easily found in the spacious cul-de-sac of Priory Gardens, just off West Street near the Co-Op store in the centre of Isleham. ■

I t is more than 10 years now since a small carving fell from the roof of Saint Andrew’s Church, Isleham, and was picked up on the nave

floor, near the organ steps. It had been ‘guarding’ the coat of arms of the Peyton Bernard & Lilling that you can still see on the most westerly roof beam on the south side of the clerestory. It had obviously succumbed to centuries of damp and woodworm and was somewhat damaged when it fell. It is, however, an expressive face, topped with a crown, and with fine details carved by an unknown medieval craftsman, way back in 1495 – details that he knew would never be seen by worshippers fifty feet below in the nave, but included nonetheless – Ad majorem Dei Gloriam – to the greater glory of God.

With a good pair of binoculars you can see the carving today, back where it came from, and you can make out the three family arms – Peyton, a gold cross on a black ground, Bernard, a black bear on silver and Lilling, three silver fish on a red ground. The Lilling family is just one of the many from whom the Peyton family acquired wives over many generations. You have only to look at the coats of arms displayed on the two Peyton tombs in the church – Robert (1590) with 15 ‘quarterings’ and Sir John (1616) with 21 – to see that the Lilling arms were always displayed – Gules three pikes argent naiant in pale within a border engrailed argent – a red ground with three silver coloured fish swimming one above the other, inside a wavy silver border.

It was Christopher – or Crystofor or Crystofer – Peyton (spelling did not seem to matter so much to those who carved, in oak, his prayer for the souls of himself, his wife and forbears all around the clerestory) who in 1495, commissioned the building of the magnificent hammerbeam roof and its 10 great angels that we can still enjoy today.

The little carving was sympathetically restored by Su Galloway, a woodcarver in the Great Fen, and then a silicone rubber mould was taken. From this mould many copies have been cast and sold as fund raisers for the urgently needed repairs to the roof, both inside and out.

But a silicone mould could only make a limited number of casts. As one mould loses its sharp detail a new one has to be made. With increased costs – labour and materials – each new mould and each new cast costs more. Finally the whole fund raising project was halted when the cost of making and hand finishing each cast rose to nearly the price at which we had been selling them.

But restoration work began on the roof in the Spring of 2004. The Westmoreland slates were removed, fresh

battens and a weatherproof Tyvek skin was laid and the slates were returned. Work then started on the conservation of the roof timbers.

There are many angels up in the roof, some guarding family coats of arms, some as additional decoration

along the beams. Few if any, though, are as well carved and

preserved as the little crowned head that we have named ‘The Isleham Angel’.

Before the internal scaffolding was removed in May, 2004, the original angel head was restored to its rightful place above the coat of arms. Because

of the poor condition of the timber above the shield, the

head had to be secured with a long stainless steel pin to the main beam itself. But he’s back

doing his job as a Guardian Angel. And you can once again buy a copy of him, as a

‘Guardian Angel’. A copy was sent to a company in China that specialises in making sporting trophies and other items cast in resin. We asked for a quote and a sample of their work: back came a copy of the cast we had sent out that was indistinguishable from the original. Someone had even copied and printed – with a few Oriental spelling mistakes – the label on the back. Having seen the detail of the Chinese copy it was decided to order a much larger quantity than we had been doing from our local manufacturer.

We can now sell these copies for half the price we were originally charging back in 1998 – now just £25 – and still give a sizeable contribution to church funds. For although the roof has been repaired there is still much work needed on the fabric of the building, and so the fund raising goes on.

Have a look in the Post Office window: a poster with a copy of the angel is displayed there. There is a website too – www.yourownguardianangel.com, telling the story of the transformation of the ‘Isleham Angel’ into the ‘Guardian Angel’, for he is now promoted worldwide as a symbol of tranquillity and peace. When you buy one you also receive a CD with a day-by-day diary and pictures of the roof restoration work as well as some of the history and heraldry of the church.

We are but temporary custodians of this lovely old building, a surprising attraction in such a small village as ours. It is our duty to ensure that it is passed to our descendants in as good, if not better condition as that in which we received it. Ian Powys

enforcement campaigns in an attempt to reduce deaths and collisions on the county’s roads.

PC Tony Barrios, Casualty Reduction Officer, says: “Although it is good to see the number of fatalities falling, the fact that 60 people lost their lives last year is obviously concerning.

“Our work will continue throughout 2009 to reduce collisions on the county’s roads through regular enforcement work and raising awareness of road safety.

“All road users play a vital part in the process and can make a real difference to reducing collisions. Too many people are being seriously injured or killed by making mistakes that are avoidable. By reducing your speed or adapting driving to the conditions of the roads you can significantly reduce the chance of being involved in a collision.”

I write today as I have become aware of the increasing number of vehicles committing driving offences on the road. This usually occurs around the winter period due to the dark nights and sludge and salt on the road.

The three topics I wish to discuss are: unreadable number plates, use of fog lights, and headlights and tail lights not working correctly.

Due to the weather conditions over winter Iam sure you have noticed how quickly your car becomes dirty. No matter how much you wash it, two days later it is filthy again. This causes a problem with vehicle number plates becoming unreadable. It becomes a problem if vehicles are stolen and the owner has failed to keep the number plate clear. The reason this is a problem is that the police have a system called ANPR (Automatic Number Plate Recognition). When a vehicle is stolen these cameras can be used to locate where it is being driven therefore resulting in the vehicle being found and hopefully returned. This system can only work if the number plate is readable.

The use of fog lights is becoming common amongst drivers and the Highway Code does state that they should only be used if visibility is reduced to less than 328ft (100 metres). Driving with your fog lights on can cause oncoming traffic to become

dazzled when weather conditions do not require them to be used. Please only use them when they are needed.

Finally due to the dark nights we regularly find ourselves switching our headlights on by 4.30pm. Having a headlight out can significantly reduce the driver’s visibility therefore raising the possibility of an accident.

Please ensure that you do weekly checks on your motor vehicle and keep it road legal. The above three points are all traffic offences and if you don’t check your vehicle you could find yourself with a £30 fine. PCSO Barb Neill

Cannabis factories

I ’m sure most of you have heard through the local media recently about the discovery of cannabis factories in the area. Iam often asked how would you

know if you had one in your neighbourhood? So I have put together a list of what to look out for: • The windows of the property are permanently covered

from the inside.• Visits to the property occur at unusual times of the

day or night.• People often do not live at the property, but only visit

to maintain it.• There may be a vent protruding from the roof or a

rear window.• There may be a pungent smell coming from the

property.• There may be noise coming from the property, due to

the use of cooling fans.• A large amount of pots and lighting may be moved

into the property prior to the factory being set up.• In terraced properties shared walls may appear to be

wet to the touch.• Large amounts of soil and pots may be stored in the

back garden.

If you have any properties in your neighbourhood that fit any or all of the above then please get in touch.

Road safety

Road deaths have decreased by 30% in the county in the past year. During 2008, 60 people lost their lives compared to 86 people the previous year (2007). Police

investigated 52 fatal collisions during 2008 and will use their findings to target any particular offences or problem areas.

Officers spent the year conducting high profile

T he November meeting was conducted by Mrs Honor Ridout whose subject was ‘Tudor life at Kentwell Hall’ (which is situated at Long Melford

in Suffolk). She brought many items that are used by the performers who re-enact the Tudor way of life to the visitors to the Hall. The talk brought back pleasant memories for a number of people in the audience who had visited the Hall at some point, including some who had accompanied pupils from our Primary School when they had been on day visits. The speaker, whose love of her subject and her ability at portraying life at the Hall in Tudor times, made for a most interesting and enjoyable evening.

There was no meeting in December,On 15 January our speaker was Miss Hilary Richie

who gave an illustrated talk entitled ‘The History of Addenbrooke’s Hospital’. She is the official Hospital archivist and we have heard good reports of her presentations.

Last year, I gave a PowerPoint presentation of pictures entitled ‘Old Isleham (1)’, which used some of the pictures our President, Arthur Houghton, has been collecting during his long lifetime illustrating the village and the activities of the villagers of many years ago. Due to the interest shown

then, it is planned to have another presentation on 19th February entitled ‘Old Isleham (2)’. This will be a different collection of pictures to those shown last year.

On 26th March we are pleased to have Miss Gill Miller to tell us about an Isleham business – W. R. Parr Antique Furniture Restorers (Isleham).

The AGM will be on 16th April when any interested persons are welcome to attend and can take part in the discussions, although only members are eligible to vote. As the AGM is normally quite a short meeting it is planned to have a time devoted to ‘Aspects of Silver’ when two of our members, Ian Powys and Bryan Wynne, will examine any silver item brought in by the audience to try and identify its age, where it came from and any other things of interest.

If you have silver items that you would like to know more about, please bring them along.

The men in the picture of five members of the Home Guard published in the December issue have been identified by Peter Clark as follows: left to right Burt Morley, Ted Fenn (who we already knew), Harry Human, Tom Fuller and Herbert Fenn. They all lived in Little London. Thanks to Peter for the information.

Pound Lane Free ChurchWe began our Coffee Mornings just after Easter last year and as we prepared for the first one we wondered if anyone would come. Well we needn’t have worried because people did come and have continued to do so, bringing friends along too. We have our ‘regulars’ who are there each week and those who just pop in as time allows. It’s a good time to catch up with friends’ news and hear how they are getting on. There is no age limit; our youngest attendee is under a year and the oldest over 90! Pastor Dave brings an eight minute ‘In the News’ spot each week that presents a topical item from a Christian perspective and gets us all thinking. Drinks and home made cakes and savouries are served and if you like a game of dominoes that’s available too!So if you have an odd hour to spare on Thursday mornings any time from 10–11.30am why not come along?
