The music featured will include a version of Lorde’s Royals as well as an interesting piece titled Grandma’s Journey which depicts an old woman reminiscing about her life. Several guest soloists will also be featured. Instrumental Concert Sunday, April 27, at 3:00 p.m. Center for the Arts, Auditorium Join us as the Cottey College Jazz Ensemble and the Cottey College Wind Ensemble perform under the direction of William A. Martin. Following the theme of “Music from England,” a tie-in to this year’s International Experience, the Wind Ensemble will perform works by such composers as Ray Vaughn Williams, Zo Elliot, and female composer Adaline Maxwell Cooper, of London. The Jazz Ensemble will be performing a number of tunes by the Beatles, so make sure and join us for the fun! Dow Lecture: Michael Denison Wednesday, April 30 8:00 p.m. Missouri Recital Hall Join us for the Blanche Hinman Dow Honored Speaker Series, as honored speaker Professor Michael Denison, associate professor of theatre and speech, gives his lecture titled, “Boxes.” The Blanche Hinman Dow Speaker award was established in 1965 by the Class of 1965 and was activated in 1987. Its purpose is to provide a forum in which a faculty member, elected by vote of the faculty as a whole, presents a lecture to the Cottey College community on a subject of his or her choice. The award is named in memory of Dr. Blanche Hinman Dow who was the sixth president of Cottey College, serving from 1949 to 1965. From the President’s Office2014 Commencement Speaker

The honored speaker for this spring’s Commencement is Áine Duggan, president of Re: Gender, formerly National Council for Research on Women. Ms. Duggan is focused on leveraging independent research to accelerate advancements for women and girls. She is a native of Ireland and earned her master’s degree from University College, Dublin.

Commencement: Faculty/Staff Participation

Commencement line up for the faculty/administrative staff processional will begin at 9:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 18, on the west side of Reeves Hall. Faculty and administrative staff who need to be excused from Commencement must notify the senior administrator (Council member) responsible for their area. Council members need to notify Dr. Pridal of any excused absences by Friday, May 2.

Now Hiring: P.E.O. Relations ManagerThe Office of Institutional Advancement is currently searching for a P.E.O. Relations Manager, a position vacated by Tracy Hass Cordova, who accepted the position of annual fund and alumnae relations director. Duties include planning, directing, and coordinating activities of P.E.O.-related functions. Bachelor’s degree, valid driver’s license, public speaking skills, strong computer skills, and previous work experience managing personnel required. CWL Film Trip

On Tuesday, April 22, students travelled to the Kansas City Public Library for a special screening of the documentary Wonder Woman! The Untold Story of American Superheroines. The highlight of the trip

was visiting with the film-maker, Kristy Guevera-Flanagan. The trip was sponsored by the Center for

Women’s Leadership.

Rock Climbing Trip

On Saturday, April 12, faculty member Dr. Sarah Quick and staff member Carrie Dreyer accompanied eighteen students to the Big Rock Climbing Gym in Springfield, Missouri. Dr. Quick and five students learned the roping techniques to become belayers (rope support) for the other students while they climbed to extreme heights! Everyone tried their hand at free climbing as well. Many students reached the tops of the several different climbing walls available at the gym.

Staff Awards

The annual administrative and hourly staff service awards presentation is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21, at 1:30 p.m. in Raney Dining Room. Afternoon snacks will be provided. Wellness award winners and Biggest Loser Challenge winners will also be announced.

New Employee

Please welcome Jonathans Sheets (Jon) as Cottey’s newest employee. He has been hired as the new maintenance technician in physical plant. If he looks familiar it’s because he worked here last summer. Welcome Jon!

Dr. Regina Peszat, assistant professor of French, attended the Kentucky Foreign Language Conference in Lexington, Kentucky, April 10-12. Dr. Peszat presented a paper on works by the contemporary French author, Annie Ernaux.

Dr. Carmen Bourbon, associate professor of Spanish, presented, “From Oppression to Resistance: The Quechua Women of Perú” on the panel, “Silenced Voices: Learning from the Indigenous Peoples of the Americas” at the Latin American Studies Association Conference, April 17-18, 2014, in Des Plaines, Illinois.

Spiritual Life and DiversityShoe Drive

As part of the Interfaith Community Spiritual Project, Erica Sigauke, director of spiritual life and campus diversity, together with Malyssa Dunson, interfaith student leader, delivered 103 pairs of shoes collected from our campus community to Gary Roberts on April 17, 2014. Mr. Roberts of Kansas City, Missouri, is affiliated with Shoeman Water Projects. George Hutchings founded this Shoeman Water Projects Organization in 1998. His goal is to collect donated shoes of any kind from schools, churches, businesses, and shoe drives and exports them to shoe vendors in places like Haiti, Kenya, South America, and in communities around the world.

Wellness ProgramKale Roundtable

There are two spots left for the Kale Roundtable which will be held on Wednesday, April 30, in the Centennial Room, from 12:10 to 12:50 p.m. Michael Richardson is preparing three kale dishes to taste test. Please bring your lunch or buy it at Raney as these samples will probably not be enough for a complete lunch. If you would like to participate please contact Karen Polon by email or at ext. 2251.

Exercise Reward Program

The Exercise Reward program will conclude for the year on Wednesday, April 30, at 6:15 p.m. All entries need to be in the wellness envelope on Karen Polon’s bulletin board by that time. Entries should include your name, the exercise you did for at least 30 minutes and the date. Only one entry per day please.

Employee Volleyball

Employee Volleyball continues for one more Wednesday, April 30, at 5:15 p.m. in the Hinkhouse gym. This is your last chance to have some volleyball fun with your friends and colleagues until next year!

Yoga Classes

Yoga continues on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 5:20 p.m.- 6:10 p.m. in the large dance studio in HInkhouse. No experience necessary, mats provided. Drop in anytime. Last yoga class will be May 15.

Biggest Loser Challenge

The Biggest Loser Challenge final weigh-in is Monday, May 5. Keep working hard to meet your goals. It’s never too late to start eating right and exercising! Good Luck BLC participants.

Join us for a fun end-of-the-year picnic dinner, available for $7 for non-Cottey students and payable at the door. Following the dinner, commedianne Tracey Ashley will perform.

Tracey Ashley is making a name for herself in the world of stand-up comedy. With her seamless storytelling style, she shares hilarious tales of being raised in the South to settling down in the Midwest and of good ol’ life itself. She has performed for The Comedy Festival in Las Vegas, was nominated as the college “Best Female Performer,” and made her television debut as a semi-finalist on NBC’s Last Comic Standing.

Join us for a this year’s children’s theatre production, Saving Sherwood Forest, an original play written by second-year Cottey student Callan Roe. The play is a retelling of the Robin Hood story. This production is especially for young audiences, but it’s just as much fun for the young at heart.

This production is under the direction of Dr. Rusalyn Andrews. Admission is free to all.
