Friday & Saturday, November 14-158:00 p.m.

Haidee & Allen Wild Center for the Arts

In Prof. Laura Chaney’s directorial debut at Cottey, join us for this special showcase of the Acting I class, featuring two one-act plays: Chamber Music by Arthur Kopit, and In Juliet’s Garden by Judy Elliot McDonald.

These two plays represent two different ways that strong women are portrayed and the subtle nuances in which women deal with their worries. The class hopes the audience will leave questioning the role of women from a historical context and how they were and still are perceived. Following the plays, the Acting I class will host an open forum to discuss the characters and women’s issues.

Fall Phonathon

The Phonathon was conducted by the Office of Annual Fund and Alumnae Relations. Paid student callers reached out to alumnae and past donors between October 25-30. In addition to providing information about The Annual Fund, the student callers also collected updated contact information, including phone numbers, addresses, and emails; and updated constituents on the current B.A. offerings, reminded alumnae about Founder’s Day 2015, and answered general questions about their Cottey experience. Thank you to all those who answered the call from Cottey!

The annual Phonathon raised just over $50,000 in gifts and pledges this year

to support The Annual Fund!

Join us to learn about current Native American issues. Declared the best movie of the year at the Sundance Film Festival, Smoke Signals is “a moving and engrossing look at life on The Rez for two Native American youths. Adam Beach’s performance is admirable. Irene Bedard is gorgeous and mesmerizing” according to one critic on Rotten Tomatoes (where it has an 86% fresh rating!).

Student News Trip to Hindu Temple

The Office of Spiritual Life and Campus Diversity organized a diversity trip for students to the Hindu Temple and Cultural Center in Shawnee, Kansas on November 1, 2014. The group was a mixture of freshman, sophomores, and BA students. Among them were students taking the world religions course, with Hinduism being one of the religions they are studying. It was a great opportunity for the students to participate and explore some of what they are learning in class.

The group had an opportunity to receive a lecture on the history of Hinduism, originally called “Sanatan Dharma” one of the oldest of living religions. The emphasis of the teachings is to experience truth through worshiping God by many names and in many forms. Our students got to learn about the history of their Temples which are in different parts of the world. They also learned about the different worship styles, the vedic prayers, the Gita worship book, and their gods and goddesses. The

students also had a chance to attend the Arati worship in the Temple, listen to a guest musician, watch a spiritual painter, tour the Shrine, and lastly had a taste of Indian food. Some of the community members were also dressed up in their Indian cultural attire.

The students were accompanied by Erica Sigauke, director of spiritual life and campus diversity, and the group included Erica Pezant, Jessica Starkey, Kiara Biggar, Laura Groves, Christina Litherland, Kristina Hutchinson, Namgay Zam, Vaea Tesan, and Shalani Gentry. The trip was a great eye opener. Students gained quite a lot.

Keep Out the Cold!

Now that the weather is getting colder, layer up to keep moving outdoors. As you start moving outside, you will feel 15-20 degrees warmer, so dress accordingly. It’s always better to layer so that if you get too warm you can take off a piece of clothing. First layer should be made of a wicking material (polyester), second layer should keep you warm like a fleece or wool, the third layer is a light weight windbreaker that could also be waterproof. Student News (cont.) Join in For Joplin

The Kolderie Center would like to announce that on Saturday, November 15, Cottey will be having its FINAL Join in for Joplin event.

The Rebuild Joplin program will be closing its doors in December, as assistance is no longer needed in the community. Therefore, we are trying to get in one last visit before they close.

For those of you who are not familiar with the event, Cottey College students work with Rebuild Joplin to assist in the construction of houses for families who lost their homes during a tragic tornado that hit the area in 2011. Several times a year, students take a trip to Joplin, provided by the College, where they spend the day volunteering their help.

No past experience is required, and everyone is encouraged to participate. This event is a great opportunity for students to experience what it is like to serve the community! It is also a wonderful opportunity to accumulate volunteer hours, which would always look great on a resume!
