A Weekly Look at the Cottey College Campus

Amidst a politically-charged atmosphere in 2016, apprehensions began to swirl among

international students about studying in the U.S. A grassroots effort by colleges and

universities, now numbering more than 300, was launched to make students from around

the world feel welcome using the hashtag #YouAreWelcomeHere. Cottey has now joined

the campaign to affirm the College’s commitment to offering a safe, diverse, and friendly campus.

The campaign uses marketing and social media featuring the message #YouAreWelcomeHere.

The Marketing and Strategic Communication Department, in cooperation with enrollment

management, academic affairs, and student life, has developed a communication plan which was submitted to the #YouAreWelcomeHere website

for acceptance into the campaign.

“We want students from around the world to know that Cottey supports diversity,” said Carla Farmer, vice president for marketing and strategic communication. “Our international students enrich the learning experience on campus preparing all students to compete in a global society.”

Cottey is communicating its message of welcome in statements, photos, video, social media and other creative expressions that feature students, faculty and staff, and we invite all members of the campus community to add their voice to this important message. A short video is currently being created featuring students and staff from across campus saying “You are welcome here” in their native language. This Sunday, November 5, from 2:30 - 3:30 p.m., prior to the Multicultural Festival, the Marketing Department will be recording some of these messages. Please stop on by! This video, along with information about services available to support international students, will be located on a Cottey Cares webpage, which is in the process of being created. The video will also eventually be featured on the #YouAreWelcomeHere website. We also invite everyone to stop by Raney Dining Room to sign the large banner, if you haven't already done so.

According to the official website, students have expressed gratitude and relief. Several students report that the video messages are especially reassuring to their parents who are comforted to see friendly faces behind the many higher education institutions across the country.

The Complete Works of William Shakespeare (abridged) [revised]

Friday & Saturday, November 3-4 @ 8:00 p.m.Haidee and Allen Wild Center for the Arts, Auditorium

Shakespeare said “Brevity is the soul of wit,” so take a madcap whirlwind trip through all of his plays. (Yep, that’s right ALL of them.) What do you get when the tutor can’t make it to a study session for an exam over the works of William Shakespeare and the theatre students are left in charge of the review? An absolute circus as the performers provide new views on old works. Unprepared and caught off guard, the actors make the best of an awkward situation, giving modern interpretations of what they know and remember (sometimes incorrectly), Googling what they don’t know and making up the rest. It’s goofy, it’s wild, and a little insane. It’s always a good time.

Tickets for the play are $5 for adults and $4 for those under age 18 or over age 62 (and free with Cottey I.D.!), and will be available at the door the evenings of the performances.

Regional Visit DayIn an effort to bring more prospective students to campus, the Enrollment Office is hosting its first Regional Visit Day this Saturday, November 4. Students and guests will be on campus Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. They will be participating in special planned activities and eating in Raney Dining Room. Currently we have 7 students and 11 guests registered. Please make them feel welcome!

With the theme of “As a Woman Sings,” the Chamber Singers will explore Cottey’s themes of women’s leadership, social responsibility, and global awareness, with several facultymembers speaking during the concert on these themes. Music such as “The Beauty of Your Dreams” features the inspirational words of Eleanor Roosevelt, “Kasar Mie La Gaji (The Earth isTired)” speaks to our responsibility to protect Earth, “The March of the Women” is a suffragist anthem that inspires us to continue fighting for women’s rights, and “Reflection” from the Disney movie Mulan encourages us to show our true selves to the world.

Denim Day

Thanks to everyone who participated in Denim Day last Friday. The College raised $315 for Breast Cancer research—Woo Hoo!

Flu Shots

It's that time again - preparing for the flu season. BlueCross BlueShield of Kansas City will pay for the flu vaccination if you are a Cottey employee (and/or dependent) who is covered by the Cottey Health Plan. The flu vaccination is free from in-network providers. You must call your health care provider and make an appointment in order to receive the vaccination. Members may also go to: Wal-Mart, CVS, or Walgreens and the flu shot would be covered at 100%.

United Way Contributions

Employees should have received United Way enrollment/contribution forms in campus mail. Please return your contribution to Betsy McReynolds in Main Hall. It’s a great way to give back to our local community in the form of tax-free payroll deduction. They are due by November 30. If you misplaced your form, please call Betsy McReynolds or Adam Dean for a new one.

Harassment Training

Don’t forget to complete the online training course, Workplace Harassment Prevention, through United Educators. Information regarding the course was sent via email to employees.

Human Resources

The Amazing RaceThe Ross Library hosted its first ever Amazing Race Through the Library this past Saturday, October 28. Seven teams competed, including one faculty team. Challenges required some acting, some research, puzzle-solving, French poetry recitation, geography, origami, art, and meal-planning. All participants got a little “gnome” and bandana souvenir, and the winners each received a $25 Visa gift card. The winning team had some cancellations, but regrouped to win. Team members of the winning Washington Wonder Women were Whitli Thomas, Sarah Gage, Susana Irigoyen, and Melanie Dillon. Other teams were:

The Insubordinate Clauses: Dr. Amanda Cook, Dr. Melody Denny, Dr. Catherine Volle, and Dr. Mary Laughlin; Water Fowl and Daisies: Michelle Palmer, Tiffany Winter, Darlina Rose, and Laurel Loyless; Kiddo: Chido Shamuyarira and Kimberly Ndhlovu; Chicken and Curry: La Min Thiri and Kidest Ketema; La Cercle Francais: Kara Alford, Anita Kamwendo, and Kathleen Hurst

Library Assistant Kathleen Day headed up the activity that included help from library student workers Sophie Weiss, Heidi Wiskus, Nicole Penick, Mackenzie McCartney, Karina Sosa de la Cruz, Gabrielle Hays, Tritney Poppy, Aschle Paladino, and faculty member Dr. Mary Mba. Library director Courtney Trautweiler was on hand to oversee it all and Steve Reed covered the event for our local media. It takes a village to plan and execute a fun-filled event like this, and we all look forward to the next library activity.

From Student LifeOn Friday, October 27, Tiffany Pruitt, MSW Intern, with the help of Pathway’s Steve Bearden hosted

a two-hour QPR Suicide Prevention program. Four students attended: Peace Karorero, Anita

Project Zero Holiday Challenge

The average American gains between 1 and 5 pounds between Thanksgiving and New Year’s. Between holiday parties, busy schedules, and cold weather, which can reduce normal exercise and outdoor activity, it seems almost inevitable that one will gain a few pounds. Project Zero is a wellness challenge to NOT gain weight during the holiday season. The challenge is not a weight loss program. Participants will be asked to weigh in on the first day of the challenge, Friday, November 17, and the last day of the challenge, Monday, January 8, 2018. Weights will be kept confidential. Anyone who gains ZERO weight between the start and end weigh-ins will have the chance to win one of several gift cards. Read next week’s Chronicle for the announcement of weigh-in times.
