Yours sincerely Phil Munday Principal We are reaching the end of a term which started with the heaviest snowfall for many years. This term is always busy, particularly for Year 11 students who are completing their coursework. I have just returned from watching an excellent display of dance which included coursework pieces for examination. On Tuesday evening a similar event was held for Drama performances. Year 11 students have worked hard and the large majority of them are to be congratulated for their efforts this term which have included, attending extra coursework and revision sessions on several evenings. The next few weeks are a busy and stressful time for them as they prepare for their final examinations. We wish them every success in their summer examinations. Contextual Value Added The GCSE results tables were published at the end of January. One key measure in the tables is the progress of students which is measured by a Contextual Value Added (CVA) score. A score of 1000 indicates that students have made average progress expected of them compared to all students in England and Wales. If the CVA is under 1000 this indicates that students have made below expected progress and scores over 1000 indicate better than average progress. We are pleased that our students achieved a score of 1007.3 in 2009. This was the best score on this measure for any school in Fareham or Gosport. Well done to our students. Summer Uniform We allow students the option of wearing polo shirts instead of shirt and tie during the summer term. Students should continue to wear blazers. would want to keep a white polo shirt in the summer. Mr Munday explained that all parents would be consulted before any changes were made.

• Staff Appointments – Mr Munday informed parents t h a t ne w H e a d s of Curriculum for English and Maths had been appointed for September.

Next Meeting – Mr Munday advised that the next meeting would include information about the website and the setting of homework via this method.

Topics for Future

Discussion

• Outstanding request for overview of English

• Role of Governors

• ICT

• Mentoring process feedback

Sue Laney - HCLW

Mr Munday welcomed parents and introduced Alex Holt, Georgina Manners, Suryani King and Kristian Balkin.

The students explained their positive roles as part of a team that actively assists in the running of the college as Head Boy, Head Girl and Deputies. This included how they set an example as role models and lead by example over issues such as uniform and litter.

They explained the selection process and the role Prefects play within a tutor group and the benefits of forming a Student Parliament. They said that the change to mixed age tutor groups had been of great benefit as they felt that all students were more confident and supported each other well.

The students were asked about their plans for the future as individuals and how they would like to see the prefect system improve. They all felt that there should in future be fewer prefects as this would be more manageable.

• 9 Day Timetable and Year 9 choices - Mr Munday expla ined t hat som e p r o p o s a l s h a d b e e n modified and in reply to parental response two subjects may be offered for study after college. The provision of a year 7 skills curriculum would be delayed for a year to allow more time for planning as it was important to success not to rush in too many changes at the same time.

• Uniform – Mr Munday explained that the Senior Leadership Team would be discussing uniform and asked for parent and student views of those present at the meeting. The students present said whilst in the lower school they did not really have an opinion they now felt that the uniform as a whole was a good uniform and they would want to keep it. Comment was made that the blazer pockets were very useful and parents

WaterAid Update

Ex-Student to Receive a Humanties Award

Ex-student Samantha Daughtrey, 19 is set to receive a Humanties award at South Downs College Award Evening in April 2010.

This is an evening to celebrate the success and achievement of South Down Students.

On March 3rd, we received a visit from Mr Eddie who delivered a talk to students in years 8 and 9 about Wateraid. This is the charity which Henry Cort raised a total of £720 for on the last Non Uniform day. We were informed that thanks

to the money we raised more than 25,000 people will benefit from clear water and sanitary equipment. A big thank to you all on behalf of Wateraid. Ms Lehmann

The Henry Cort Community College was host to the Duke of Edinburgh Award Ceremony in February.

Celebrating the achievements of students from the local area, bronze, silver and gold awards were presented.

Students work towards the awards by completing a personal programme of

activities in four sections (five for the Gold award) by helping people in the community, getting fitter, developing skills, going on an expedition or taking part in a residential activity.

Congratulat ions to the following Henry Cort students who achieved Bronze Awards:

Year 7 Inter-Cricket Tournament

Hampshire.

The team is; Tom Frisby, Ashley Snell, Ryan Baker, Calin Rutter, Alex Laurence and Matt Doran although two more players can be selected to join the squad as long as they attend training!

On Monday 8th March six year seven boys attended the Fareham and Gosport inter-cricket tournament. They were chosen from those that attended the first lunchtime cricket club on Mondays. The event was held at Fareham leisure centre with the top Fareham team and the top

Gosport team going through to the next round. The boys did fantastically well and beat all of the opposition to progress through. Our main rival was Cams Hill but after an emphatic victory we cruised through to first spot. The next round will be held soon against schools from around

Year 7 Rugby Hampshire Cup

To make the next step for our rugby team we need to have more of the students join local rugby clubs as the experience is invaluable. For details of local clubs or information on how to join the squad speak to me or Mr Lane.

Mr M Hotchkiss

Teacher of PE

On Wednesday 10th March our year seven Rugby squad attended the Hampshire cup competition. They progressed to this final due to their fantastic league form, having lost only one match all season. The cup competition is for the best and most experienced rugby schools in the county and is the first year that Henry Cort has qualified.

The other schools present were Oaklands, Cams Hill, Kings, Springfield, Robert Mays and Bohunt. We played all of the schools in a round robin. At no point during the tournament did we look out of our depth and all of the games were very even. We beat Kings and drew wi t h Springfield finishing joint fourth in the county overall. Huge congratulations to all involved.

On the 6th March the new Year 10 bronze Duke of Edinburgh group went to the New Forest on the first part of their expedition training. Some of the skills learnt were using compasses to take bearings, map skills and team building. Our skills were put to the test when we were faced with trying to cross a stream without getting too wet! It was a fun but tiring day but everyone had fun, it was well worth going. Since then we have also had a training session on first aid and we will be planning our practice expedition soon. Article written by Ashley Bigington - DBB

Invincible

Another brilliant term for the girls and boys of Invincible.

We have taken part in National Doodle Day, EIO winning the tutor group award and Louis Wickham the individual award for ‘A Dog and a Camel say Hello’. Big tin of chocolates for both tutor groups.

Several of our youngsters went on the Westminster trip and Andrew Murphy returned declaring that he wants to enter Parliament by being returned as the Labour Member for Fareham! Tom Smart also really enjoyed this trip also, describing it as “awesome, oozing in history”. He and other youngsters also attended a trip to Fratton Park.

Lots of Bronze, Silver and Beth Hamilton and Isobel Wood getting Gold Certificates. Many congratulations to those two girls.

We welcomed Kristian Balkin, the College Deputy Head boy, who has been attached to Invincible.

On the sports front, two boys have played their respective sports at a national level – Tom Frisby at badminton and George Callard at football. Tom Amy has played rugby for Fareham and Leila Hamilton has competed in competitions for her club in Gymnastics.

Well done Invincible.

• Joshua Goddard Tandy plays basketball for the Solent Kestrals and is trying for a place in the Under 13 Team in May.

• Bill Lester and Matt Jolly both take part in Motorcross.

• Rebecca Raymond VSC was part of the Wessex Dance Youth entry to Rock Challenge.

• VGB Mollie Bedford has gained her Introductory Stage Certificate, from the Hampshire Music Service, playing the flute.

• VHW Jacky Sykes & Ellie Mills yr 9 run a dance club with year 8's, which is going really well.

In March we held our first Victorious Student Voice Meeting. Each tutor group has chosen representatives to attend the meetings, spanning all years from 7 to 10. Student Voice provides an opportunity for the representatives to take on the responsibility of leading discussions within their tutor groups. They present issues at the meetings, and then feedback to their tutor groups. In this way we hope that all students in Victorious will feel able to take an active part in shaping the future of the College.

Discussion focussed on the tutor time, following on from the beginning of this half term when tutor time was at the beginning of the day rather than in the middle of the morning session. If you have an issue you would like discussed, speak to your tutor group representative.

Well done, Victorious.

Triumph

This term tutor groups in Triumph house have been delivering assemblies to their peers. I am really pleased to say that at the time of going to press each and every tutor group has produced and delivered their assembly on time and that every student in each tutor group has taken part in some way or another. It was exactly this sort of cooperation and collaboration between students of mixed ages that we hoped that we could see when the House system was introduced. It also has given an opportunity for our older students to take on responsibility with the younger students and all students taking part have seen what it is like to have to speak in front of an audience of over 150 people. I am sure that there are some parents out there who would be a little daunted by this prospect, so well done to everyone who has taken part so far. Once again there was also evidence of our prefects working with the younger students with Abby Legge in Year 11 taking a role in TDA's assembly. We look forward to the last few presentations in the summer term

The following students have received the certificates listed below for their outstanding work this term:

I would like to take this opportunity to publicise an event that Charlotte Cameron in TSM has taken on as an individual challenge for our adopted charity KIDS. She has decided to do a 5 kilometre swim . This is all her own idea and it is quite a challenge that she has given herself here. For our part, I hope that the rest of us can get behind her by sponsoring her. This also throws down the gauntlet to other students to come up with other innovative ways to raise money for our adopted charity. After the Easter break, I will give all of the students in the house and indeed college, details of how and where they can sponsor Charlotte.

It is also a credit to all the students in the college, (not just our own) that they were so disappointed not to be able to do the Sport Relief Mile that was planned due to the sudden deterioration in the weather on the day. There was a really positive attitude towards this event and it is still hoped that when the spring eventually arrives, this will still happen.

At the end of last half term we were once again the House with the best overall attendance. TSM were once again the tutor group within the House with the best attendance. I think that Mrs Mathews must be giving her tutees some secret inducement to come in to college.

We were sad to say goodbye to Georgia Mae Deacon in Year 9 on Friday 26th March. She had been instrumental in setting up a Dance Class for students in Years 7 and 8. We wish her all the best at St Edmunds.

I would personally like to thank Mrs Davis for her excellent work in coordinating the certificates that students receive. We have had so many successful students in Triumph House that this has become a bigger and bigger task... We also wish her all the best as she goes off on maternity soon after Easter. I don’t know what I will do without her.

Another busy round of mentoring has just commenced and I hope that you are finding the sessions with your sons/ daughters tutors informative and useful. We really do appreciate the time that you take to get into the appointments and feel that there is a real benefit from knowing the tutors well. Thank you for your support on this.

I would also like to thank all of the students in Triumph house for their conduct once again this term. I hope that the weather improves and that everybody enjoys some kind of relaxation over the Easter break

GATHERING INFORMATION

After that we went up into E5 and found some more information too expand on our story. Whilst we were there we started on our scripts; some were really good.

FILMING

Finally, we started to film our stories, along with interviewing people, such as Mr Hartnell. It may seem complicated, but the only equipment used was video cameras, pencils, paper and windows movie maker. We managed to finish our stories just on time. It’s amazing that the technology at Henry Cort is so similar to what was at BBC South.

You can have a look at what we did by going to the Henry Cort homepage then clicking on “students” then “bbc school report”. The after school club will also be continuing into the summer term. Come along to E4 on a Thursday after school if you think you have the skills!

Luke Romaine, HCTV Reporter.

On Tuesday 9th March, 4 journalists: Ryan Baker, Chris Fagan, Luke Romaine and Dana Lovett, went to take on Sally Taylor. We took the train from Fareham to Southampton Central. Then had a short walk up a steep hill to the offices of BBC South.

In the building, it was quite busy. There were a lot of reporters in the newsroom researching breaking news and hot topics on their laptops as well as camera men filming the latest story.

We went into a smaller studio, which is temporarily being used as a new bigger studio is being built next door. Eventually we met Sally Taylor. She gave us some hints and tips on how to report the news as well as what her favourite news story was. The whole experience was very enjoyable.

On Thursday 11th March, 9 budding journalists, with the help of Ms Viner, were involved in BBC News School Report.

BBC News School Report is an annual event run by the BBC. It involves creating an entire news programme at school. On the day you have to f ind, gather, write, assemble, order and film your news story. This can be hard work, but on the day we managed deliver a successful news programme. Some of the main topics were:

• The Hadron Collider

• Portsmouth FC

• Video Games for the classroom

• The 2 new Navy Vessels, The Daring and The Dauntless.

• Avatar

• Climate Change

EDITORIAL MEETING

At first we started with an editorial meeting in the conference room. There we e i t h e r r e a d t h r o u g h newspapers or researched on the web in the library, thank you to Mrs Taylor, to find interesting news stories to present. Some stories were taken from the after school

It is about a teenage girl, Billi, as she trains to be in the Knights Templar, one of the most p o w e r f u l military organisations in history. But it is the 21st century and there are only a few left which makes it a lot tougher to beat the demons, the vampires and the dark angels.

Sarwat Chadda Visit Review

On March 4th, Sarwat Chadda, author of Devil’s Kiss, visited year 8 for an interactive assembly and a special workshop for some year 8 students.

In the assembly, he let us recreate the 2nd half of the first chapter of his new book by taking suggestions from the audience. He also showed us how to make a chapter easier to write.

In the workshop, he showed us a good way of planning a story and how to create an

interesting character. We discussed what made a character interesting and how to organise our ideas to interest the reader. We also had to watch the movie, Star Wars: A New Hope to help us understand a fight between good and evil and to give us an example of a good story line.

Devil’s Kiss Review

Devil’s Kiss is a gothic romance that I just couldn’t put down. I started reading it at about half seven and the time went so fast, the next time I looked at my clock, it was eleven!

HC3S

To get ready for the biggest and best sporting event of 2010, HC3S are inviting all students to get involved and win a fabulous Pizza Party for them and five friends.

Every time a student buys something from the college canteen between the 7th and 11th June they will be given a voucher.

The student then will have to fill in their details, estimate how many goals will be scored during the tournament, and then place the voucher in the box that corresponds with their estimate.

During the tournament HC3S will update students with the number of goals scored so far. After the tournament has

a better understanding on how to tackle questions when we come to the exam. It was great to be given the opportunity to meet Josh Brooman (the writer of our GCSE History books) and listen to the help he gave to us on how to do the best we can in our GCSE. I had a great time on this trip!

On the 4th of March, a group of us from Henry Cort visited Ferneham Hall to watch a performance called Hitler on Trial, which involved us receiving very useful advice and help on how to handle exam questions and how to grasp the full concept of what it’s asking you.

This was a really helpful activity. We got a chance to be

involved in the performance by playing the role of the jury and we had to decide whether we thought Hitler was guilty or not. It was really interesting to watch and in the end we all decided that Hitler was guilty of causing World War Two!

Rock Challenge 2010

This year’s team for Rock Challenge were fantastic. Overall the team won 2 awards: Best press coverage and Best hair and make up. Throughout the day the students took part in rehearsals and prepared for the final performance in the evening.

I would like to personally thank a few people for their contribution to this year’s team. I would like to thank Bob S i m m o n d s ( f r o m www.idealvideo.co.uk) for generously sponsoring us, Mrs Prentice, Mrs Abbey and Mrs Chandler for their sewing

skills, Mrs Middleton for her designing and painting of the costumes, Mr King for designing the set and the general support from staff, parents and students. Without all of your support we would have really struggled.

I would also like to thank this year ’s perf orm ers and backstage crew. They were brilliant and represented the school to an exceptional standard.

Well done.

Vice Principal

Over the past few years the progress reviews (reporting) system has changed beyond recognition. We were very conscience that the traditional methods of reporting once a year followed by a parents evening was what most of us experienced through our school careers but in fact the time periods between each session could be almost a year in some cases.

The current system was developed to create more opportunities to give a snapshot to parents and a more personalised approach to looking at how we could provide occasions throughout the year for our students to discuss their progress.

Now we have a structure which reports to parents and more importantly to the students 3 times a year. We still provide the subject

consultation evening but we have also included more opportunities to talk to staff i.e. the tutor during the two mentoring sessions and senior staff at the parent information evenings. All of these face to face meetings are designed to inform and monitor the challenges that face the students throughout the year.

The feedback has been positive and I must thank all parents who responded to the Progress Reviews either by the return slip at the bottom of the review or by the questionnaire. It has been very inf ormat ive. Af ter gathering the information together from parents, staff and students, it has become clear that the duplication on the sheet did caused some confusion.

As a trial for the second progress review of this year
