Armistice CantataA 30 minute production for your school to perform

Order your copy of Armistice Cantata for £50 (including post and packaging).

It contains, A CD of backing tracks - A second CD containing the following - PDFs of thesheet music /scores – melody line with chord symbols and the original lyrics. Schools mayuse this to create their own accompaniment rather than use the backing tracks if they wish.also PDFs of a simple piano accompaniment score for each song – for schools wishing toaccompany with a piano. and Additional SA and SAB vocal scores for two of the songs -for schools wishing to involve a local “Goldies” group or a local adult (parents/community)choir as well as Word sheets for all the songs, and the narrative between each song/scene – this can be amended to “localise” the production to the area/community where it is per-formed. Finally a Power point presentation for use as a backdrop to the production – thiscan also be amended.

Armistice Cantata was written by children at Thornhill Primary School, Cardiff. Liz Berry is deputy head, she explains;“Our school has really embraced the Goldies Charity and we have seen the huge benefits that come

when older people visit school to meet and enjoy the WW1 projects and sing the Goldies songs. WhenGrenville approached us we were delighted to be asked and our brilliant Year 4 and 5 children, led byThornhill’s inspired music teacher Claire Holcombe, have written the song words which are adapted tomelodies of 100 years ago. I cannot emphasise enough how proud we are of them all and we performedthe 30 minute play of words and music at Chapter Arts in Cardiff on Friday morning November 10 forthe first time in front of an invited audience."The Thornhill pupils worked on the project for 6 months and research included a visit to the Glamorgan

Archives Museum to see WW1 memorabilia and letters and learn more about the men from South Waleswho went to war. There are 7 songs and groups of children composed the lyrics for each and, togetherwith older people who attend nearby Goldies singing sessions, they then worked on the narration scriptand the images that form the backdrop to the 30 minute production. Professional guidance also came from Goldies Cymru supporter Emyr Wynne Jones and Alwyn

Humphreys whose expertise and musicianship then helped to create the final score and script. Ourpictures were taken at the launch where children from Rhydypennau Primary School performed the twoWW1 Medleys that are part of the supporting programme.

‘An elderly person needs a bitof something to look forwardto. We do a lot of lookingbackwards when we getolder’. 86 year old Nancy nevermisses her Goldies session.

A Charity called Golden-OldiesPatron Sir Cliff Richard

The Channel Four programme Young@Heart and the BBC2 Television programme The Zimmers back in 2007 highlightedsocial issues and loneliness facing older people. More importantly, these two programmes showed how singing “popular“music can take people back to happy times and bring joy and friendship to their lives.

Those programmes inspired Grenville Jones to start the Golden-Oldies charity in the West Country City of Bath where helives in 2007. Grenville has appeared on radio and TV across the World. He has performed on stage with his choirs withKatherine Jenkins, Alfie Boe, Jamie Cullum, Russell Watson, Aled Jones and many others. He now leads 14 choirs includingthe celebrated Last Choir Standing Bath Male Choir from the popular BBC series, also the Norland College Choir, The BathChorus and a number of community choirs. He is patron of the Cornwall Community Choir Association and is one of ‘THE100’ judges on the new 2018 Saturday evening BBC1 show ALL TOGETHER NOW. Introduced by comedian Rob Beckett andformer spice girl Geri Horner. The six-part series is described as, ‘A singing competition with a twist!’

Grenville is always anxious to underline that “Goldies” is NOT about choir singing find out more on

www.golden-oldies.org.ukIn the UK there are millions of people who are living in isolation and missing out on regular contact with their family andfriends. Getting together, making friends and having fun are the basis of this Charity and its simple ethos - to give peopleevents they can look forward to, a REASON to get out of their homes and be with others. This can be their daytime monthlysinging session in a sheltered housing community room or in a local church or community hall. It could also be a trip to thelocal school as part of our award-winning schools projects, a concert or a visit to meet and sing with another Goldies session.

"Singing should be on prescription," says our founder Grenville Jones.

The songs at the daytime SING&SMILE sessions are carefully chosen and based on the well-known memory evoking hits ofthe 50s 60s & 70s. They encourage people to clap in rhythm to the music, tap their feet, smile and more often than not . . .get up and dance!

Goldies developed across the South West of England and Goldies Cymru was launched 6 years ago with sessions beingadded across Yorkshire, Essex, Staffs/Derby, Devon, Hampshire and Cornwall – thousands now take part. Our vision is GoldiesUK, reaching out across all communities.

If you are reading this from anywhere in the UK and are wondering how Golden-Oldies can be introduced in your area thenwe would love to hear from you. Please email Grenville Jones and we will get back to you as soon as we can. We are only asmall team but we are growing thanks to the support from The Lottery, many Trusts, councils and community groups.
