CONGRATULATIONS TO GALILEO ACADEMY . . . for being the highest performing
comprehensive high school in San Francisco . . . for being the 33rd
(of 40) most beautiful high school
campuses in California . . . for the repeated victories of its Dragon Boat Team. Keep going, Lions!
On October 14, the Alumni Association will honor a dozen of its former outstanding athletes at a dinner
at Patio Espanol. The honorees are from the 50s, 70s, 80s, 00s and 10s. It promises to be a fun evening so
make your reservations before October 7th
. See the flyer at the end of this newsletter.
Political correctness can be carried too far. Now the Board of Education President wants to rename
certain schools in San Francisco, such as George Washington High School and Robert Louis Stevenson
Elementary School. We, for one, are against this. Instead of renaming GWHS Maya Angelou High
School (the famed poet attended there), why not name a new school after her? Our schools have long
standing traditions and their names should not be changed just because one person says so. The Board
President’s argument is that the name often doesn’t have a connection with the school. In the case of
Robert Louis Stevenson, he lived for a time on Hyde Street, below Lombard, or so I was told 66 years
ago.
In this season of elections, I am reminded of another presidential hopeful who said “It is time for a
change.” In the summer of 1944, my father took me down to the Civic Auditorium where Republican
candidate Thomas E. Dewey appeared on the northwest portico in a bid to unseat incumbent President
Franklin Delano Roosevelt. FDR won an unprecedented fourth term and his Vice President was Harry S.
Truman. When Truman became President after Roosevelt died in 1945, he opened the United Nations in
the SF Memorial Opera House. Later, when he fired General Douglas MacArthur, we were dismissed
from Galileo early do that we could go see the General speak on the steps of City Hall. I stood 10 feet
from him, and the next day in Miss Keohan’s music classroom, we listened on the radio to MacArthur’s
speech to Congress: “Old soldiers never die, they just . . . fade away.”
“The Night Augustin Lara Died”
On November 6, 1970, I was living in Mexico City. The radio announced the news that Augustin Lara
was gravely ill. I had the flu in my apartment in the Polanco district. My doctor, Donato Alarcon
Segovia, arrived a little after 8:00 PM. “Sorry, Mr. Der Harootunian,” he said. “I guess you know why I
am late. I was attending to Senor Lara.”
(One of 6 doctors attending the maestro). “Yes, I heard it on the news. How is he?” “We tried to save
him, but it doesn’t look good.” At that moment my condition became insignificant. Sometimes one’s own
condition is diminished by what happens to another. The composer of “Granada,” “You Belong to my
Heart,” and other memorable songs, the actor who had the face of a matador, who married Maria Felix,
and who was the lover of many women, had passed on.
(continued)
A letter from Dr. Theodore Geballe, recipient of the 2016 Galileo Hall of Merit award:
Dear Sisvan & Members of the Induction Committee,
Thank you for your kind words & for inducting me into the Galileo Hall of Merit. It brings back happy
memories of old classmates, learning about the laws of supply & demand from Miss Watts while inhaling
delicious chocolate smells drifting in from across the street* & playing in the school yard and getting to
listen to Joe DiMaggio in the World Series instead of being in class. I am very pleased that there is a plan to
revive the telescope. I would like to make a donation for that. There are so many exciting new discoveries
being made. Some of you may even be visiting Mars before you are my age! Best regards, Ted Geballe ’36.
*Thank you, Dr. Geballe, for your generous gift of $1,000 toward the restoration of the observatory and
telescope. Dr. Geballe’s reference to the chocolate smells from across the street were from the Ghiradelli
Chocolate Factory.
More from Cicero (106-43 B.C.):
“I do not now feel the need of the strength of youth any more than when a young man I felt the need of the
strength of the bull or of the elephant. Such strength as a man has he should use, and whatever he does
should be done in proportion to his strength. Enjoy the blessing of strength while you have it and do not
bewail it when it is gone unless…you believe that youth must lament the loss of infancy, or early manhood
the passing of youth. Life’s race-course is fixed; Nature has only a single path and that path is run but once,
and to each stage of existence has been allotted its own appropriate quality; so that the weakness of
childhood, the impetuosity of youth, the seriousness of middle life, the maturity of old age – each bears some
of Nature’s fruit, which must be garnered in its own season. It is our duty to resist old age to compensate for
its defects by a watchful care; to fight against it as we would fight against disease to adopt a regimen of
health; to practice moderate exercise; and to take just enough of food and drink to restore our strength and
not to overburden it. Nor, indeed, are we to give our attention solely to the body; much greater care is due to
the mind and soul for they, too, like lamps, grow dim with time, unless we keep them supplied with oil.”
“To be content with what we possess is the greatest of all riches.” – SF Public Library

THANK YOU! Class of 1965 for stepping up to help the Alumni Association. I am so excited that we have a class that is still passionate and interested in helping the Students, Teachers of Galileo. I challenge any other class to join us. There’s a lot of work to be done in order to catch up with the other S.F. School Alumni’s. We are last on the list and the smallest. We have many exciting events coming up, including our 100
th year
anniversary.
PROGRESS AT GALILEO
Observatory
Our Principal Mr. Reimer has been making serious moves and is very busy. Things are happening quickly at Gal. I am so excited to announce that there will be a bond on the ballot in November (which should pass) and that bond is to cover the restoration of the Observatory building. We in turn have to do fundraising for the telescope itself and the streaming into the Auditorium on a big screen and also on the internet. This is huge and we’re hoping to have it completed by 2021.
Restrooms
Within the next 3 years, all the bathrooms at Galileo will be fully restored. This is great news.

Between the Lions

FALL 2016
Greetings Mighty Lions! Here’s what happening at Galileo these days.
UPDATE ON WILLIAMS SONOMA CIRCLE THE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP
Our wonderful friends at Williams Sonoma just keep on giving to our faculty and staff. Plans are happening now to redecorate our Conference Room, 210, which will include painting and new furniture. They are also planning a painting and redecoration for one of our Wellness Meeting Rooms, 451A. It is wonderful their employees volunteer and do all the remodeling work themselves.
This school year began with a large number of volunteers from Williams-Sonoma coming to Galileo to help teachers set up their classrooms on August 12, 2016. This was followed by a wine and cheese social event at Williams-Sonoma headquarters. An exciting activity this year will involve Williams-Sonoma's mentoring with Galileo's Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. This year, as last year, Williams-Sonoma employees will conduct mock interviews with our students to prepare them for employment interviews in the future.
SAD NEWS
A very moving service and celebration of life was held for Galileo’s 17th principal, Marcus Blacksher on Friday, July 22, 2016, at the True Hope Church in San Francisco. The service lasted 3 hours and was followed by his burial at Olivet Cemetery. A Repast was held following the burial at Thurgood Marshall High School. Many officials from the San Francisco Unified School District attended the service and Galileo JROTC provided the Color Guard. Former Galileo student and current President of the Board of Supervisors, London Breed was one of the guest speakers.
Marcus was raised in San Francisco and was a student of the San Francisco School District. He graduated from Woodrow Wilson High School in 1988 and played sports all through high school. He attended Morehouse College in Atlanta, GA and graduated from St. Mary’s College in 1994. He received a Master’s Degree from San Francisco State University. During his career with the San Francisco Unified School District he served at Enola D. Maxwell and Gloria R. Davis Middle Schools along with Thurgood Marshall, Mission and Galileo High Schools. He left SFUSD at the end of the 2014/2015 school year to serve as Commissioner of Athletics for the Pittsburgh California School District.
JROTC
JROTC is a program designed to motivate students to become better citizens. In order to achieve this, cadets often participate in events for community service around the city. So far this year JROTC Cadets have done two events: water stations for the Giants Race and the beach cleanup at Ocean Beach. During the events the more experienced cadets lead the participating students in order for them to gain more leadership qualities, while also getting the jobs done. In the last event, the beach cleanup, the JROTC Cadets were able to clean up a huge area next the beach on top of a hill. Their efforts greatly improved the overall environment of the beach, and made it a more pleasant place for people to spend time with their friends and families. On Thursday, September 29th, cadets volunteered for Galileo’s annual Back to School Night. Cadets have been volunteering for this event for many years and will continue to do so for numerous years to come. Every year cadets help parents find their way around the school, help them locate the teachers or staff they are looking for, and sometimes even provide translation for parents who are not fluent in English. Another upcoming event is the Marine Corps Silent Drill Platoon performance during Fleet Week at our school’s football field. The event will
be on October 6th at 3 PM. JROTC will march and perform in the Double 10 Parade in Chinatown on October 9th. There are also a few other events planned in the near future at the moment and many more will be organized soon. Galileo JROTC’s efforts to improve the community have positively affected the city overall, and cadets have grown to become better leaders and citizens of the United States at the same time.
CELESTIAL DRAGON BOAT TEAM
The season is winding down for the Galileo Celestial Dragons Dragonboat Club but not without having one of the most exciting seasons in recent memory. As many of you know the GCD team was invited to compete in the CCB Hong Kong International Dragon Boat Races. Thanks to the fundraising efforts of the team and the generous support of the Galileo Alumni Association the team was able to participate in the competition. We were the only team from the USA to be able to participate! During the three day competition the team raced against high powered teams like the Philipine Dragon-Boat Federation, the Signapore National Dragon Boat team and the Guangshou Antoni International Dragonboat team just to name a few. When the dust settled our GCD paddlers took 4th place in both the International Mixed Finals 200 meter small boats and the International Mixed Finals!!! GCD not only represented our school with pride but the entire country! After returning from Hong Kong it was time to compete in Long Beach where our paddlers once again showed their skills against other high school teams. The GCD1 boat won the high school A division races and placed 2nd in the mixed 1B division. The GCD2 boat won the mixed 3B division races, made it to the high school A finals, and placed 3rd in the B division 200 meter sprints. The most recent race took place at Lake Merritt while Treasure Island is under construction. The weather was beautiful and Oakland was lucky to have such a fun event going on in the city. Many of the GCD paddlers were competing with teams from Mountain View and UCLA during the event but regardless the team still made it to the high school A division finals and placed 5th. Lastly the new school year brings with it new officers within GCD. Sadly we are saying goodbye to our previous team manager Jefflyn Liu as she graduated in May. This year the new team manager is Eric Young and we hope to build on the strong foundation of the Galileo Celestial Dragons.
VAN NESS GYM RENOVATION
Work on the Van Ness Gym continued all summer until the current school year began. The new lighting has been installed and the gym is now much brighter. New heaters have been installed along with new padding on the walls. The lower part of the walls has been repainted purple and orange paint will come next summer along with new curtains with the Lion and the Galileo logo. Next summer the new windows will be installed. More updates will follow in future issues.
72ND ANNUAL SONG & YELL AND HOMECOMING Galileo’s 72nd Song & Yell Competition will be held on Friday, October 7, 2016, from 11:00am – 12:30pm. Judges include Galileo Alumni Sisvan der Hartootunian (1951), Lawrence Wong (1966), Autumn Lee (2008), Dominic Tsang (2009), Brandon Lee (2014), Rebecca Borja (2015), San Francisco School Board President Matt Haney, Community Affairs Manager for Williams-Sonoma Bryce Kumagi and Senior Real Estate Planner for Williams-Sonoma Laurie Brown.
The Homecoming Game will be played Friday, October 7, 2016 against Lowell at Kezar Stadium starting at 7:00pm. The Homecoming Dance will be held on Friday, October 21, 2016 at the Holiday Inn Gateway on Van Ness Avenue.
FALL SPORTS
FOOTBALL
Galileo Varsity Football (1-2) Galileo's varsity team looks like a playoff contender with a capable offense and a well-balanced defense. First year starting quarterback, Adrian Poot has shown an early connection with fellow junior receivers, Jackie Guo and Erasmo Rivas as evident in the final non-league match at Piner (Santa Rosa). Poot tossed scores of 12 and 24 yards to Rivas and Guo respectively. Another weapon Poot has is senior slot receiver, Donovan Hasson who is a third year starter. Hasson has already scored and impressively, made quite a few acrobatic catches. An unknown now but the news will get out in a hurry about Galileo's freshman running back, Yarvell Smith. In his first varsity start at Piner, Smith flashed some of his potential while accumulating 90 yards on the ground. Defensively, three senior linebackers will play key rolls; Miles Mainini, Connor Chavela and Demaje Ardis. Ardis already has an interception along with Rivas, at safety. Galileo also returns senior all-city defensive end, Kenneth Grady. Junior cornerback, Antonio Lewis, in his second season as a starter, will bid for an all-city selection.
Galileo Frosh Soph Football (2-1) Reluctant, sophomore quarterback, Ronal Fox is doing an excellent job learning the QB position. Fox, a true running back and receiver, has found himself running and passing for touchdowns. He is also leading the charge on the defensive side as a safety. k Key defensive player is middle linebacker, Antonio McBride who is filling in at running back with the departure of Yarvell Smith. Sophomore defensive end, Leo Dujardin, affectionately know as "Slim" has shown vast improvement along with utility-player, Reese Bickart who has filled in at nearly all defensive positions and multiple offensive positions. Another sophomore, Thomas Santos is anchoring the offensive line. The young lions are looking for another city title in three straight seasons.
ross Country The Galileo Cross Country Team is off and running. In September, the team competed at the Lowell Invitational and Westmoor Ram Invitataional. October brings two more Invitationals and the start of the official season. All five divisions – boys F/S, JV, and Varsity and girls F/S and Varsity – have their sights set on top three finishes at the City Championships in November.
The entire Varsity Girls team returns from last year and is led by junior Tracy Tam, who finished 7th overall in the City and qualified for the state meet. The girls finished in 3rd place as a team and are working toward improving on that performance this year. On the boys side, they’re building on the Frosh/Soph team’s 3rd place finish from last year and hope to match that with a top three finish at the Varsity level. Based on preseason performances, Tracy Tam, Dana Liu, Cathy Liang, Nathan Lam, Niko Kashima, and Kevin Serrano all have a shot at finishing in the top 8 at the City Championships, which would earn them a spot at the State Championship Meet.
If you would like to support the Galileo Cross Country Team please consider donating a pair of running shoes. We would be happy to accept lightly used shoes or new pairs. Many of our student-athletes are low income and run in very old running shoes, which often leads to shin splints and knee injuries. Please email Coach Joe Keough at [email protected] if you are interested in supporting the Cross Country Team.
Girls’ Volleyball
Galileo Girls Varsity Volleyball Team started off by winning their first game against Mission. The team consists mostly of Seniors. They season the team has a new coach, Brand Woo, who plays for Dynasty, a nine men team based in Chinatown. With last years seniors gone, there have been two new additions to the team, Una Deng (11th grade) and Fiona Tsu (11th grade). Just as in the past 3 seasons, Galileo is in the top division, facing the toughest teams in the league. With the season just starting, they hope to clinch a spot in the playoffs.
Galileo Girls’ Varsity Golf The 2016 version of the girls’ team has been an introductory lesson in the fine sport of golf. Twelve different girls have represented Galileo with their first time ever on a golf course coming during match play this year! Despite a full squad of novice golfers with no returning players from last season the team has had a win and a few close losses. The overall team scores have gone down in each of the first five matches, displaying weekly improvement. The team hopes to continue to show progress as they adapt skills learned at practices at the Moscone Nets into improvements on the golf course in matches. With two matches to go Coach Sklarz and the team are sure to be competitive and hope to pull off another win!
Let me know what you’d like to hear/read about at Galileo. Bettie on the Beat will be happy
to answer your questions and handle your requests.

On August 6, 2016, the Galileo Class of 1965 held its 50th class reunion at the Elks Club in San Mateo. It was a fun-filled evening of reacquainting with old classmates, reminiscing of fond memories, laughing until our bellies ached, feasting like royalty, and dancing the night away. We acknowledged our classmates who are no longer with us with a Memorial tree and a moment of silence. We also paid tribute to all of our classmates who as Veterans served our country proudly. We all went home with renewed friendships and agreed to stay in contact with each other and also agreed to commit to have another class reunion in another ten years. Oh, what a night

What? Don’t know what to do with all that extra money you have. Donate to the Galileo Alumni Association. All donations go directly to the school. The Science department is strapped for money. Just buying rubber disposable
gloves costs a lot. The printing supplies to print the Pendulum cost have risen dramatically. Seniors have to now pay for all their senior activities and graduation events. TAX ID 30-0066848

ANNUAL DONATIONS
January 1, 2016 – December 31, 2016
GALILEO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISING
Since the state has cut back funding to public schools, many of the activities we enjoyed at Galileo now require outside monies to maintain. To date, GAA has contributed to the school newspaper, sports program, and graduation site. With your help, we hope to do even more in the future.
Because of GAA’s nonprofit status, your donations are tax deductible. When making a contribution, please use a check, rather than send cash, so you have a record. Your cancelled check acknowledges receipt by GAA.
I’m sure you remember doing car washes, bake sales, whatever you could to raise money for your senior activities. Students now have to work even harder to raise these funds. Don’t forget your Alma Mater. GO LIONS!
