Through The Telescope Sisvan Der Harootunian

big hand to GAA President Charlene Mori, Vice President Bill Lew, Jim Young and Richard Ozer from EAS for making a working telescope a reality for Galileo. Bill recently announced that a portable telescope (12” diameter) capable of viewing the distant planets

and stars will be delivered to Galileo soon. We are all looking forward to its arrival. It was made possible by the special Observatory/Telescope Fundraisers that were put on by Jim Young and the team. In the near future current Gal students will be able to use it in their astronomy class. Its portability will enable use at various sites at Galileo and outside of the school. The telescope is a welcome addition to the science program. Galileo Galilei would have been proud.

Kudos also to Mayor London Breed who announced at Galileo that ROTC will be back in the Fall. * * *

auditorium. Everyone is invited. Admission is free. * * *

San Francisco in 1939: Currently on display at the Main Library and all branches are parts of the city model that was constructed in 1939 at the Golden Gate International Exposition on Treasure Island. Recently discovered, it has been dusted off and parts of it put on display at the branch libraries. Docents and historians have given talks about the model and invited audience participation. “… the hope is to bring the whole model together to be displayed as one object and one city.” Take Part is the name of the program and “is an invitation for you to experience the model, reflect on your relationship to the city, and imagine its future possibilities.” For more information, visit takepartSF.net.

In 1946 the famous architect Frank Lloyd Wright said, “San Francisco is the most charming city in America. It is the most cosmopolitan. It is the most picturesque. And at that it is the most backward city architecturally in the United States. Yet it manages because of the character of its hills and environment and its people, who are the best looking in the country. I don’t know how much of this is due to natural advantages or accident. But I like San Francisco.”

OBSERVATIONS: Construction ALL over town. UGH! Hard to drive/park. Too many potholes caused by unusually heavy rains.

New look of MUNI trains. No facing ahead seats – all are sideways, allowing more passengers. Color coded seats (blue for elderly/handicapped, red for others). No stop cords to pull, just buttons. State of the art.

VOLUNTEERISM: It’s like love, you give it unconditionally. To be a successful volunteer, you must give of yourself – your talent, your time, your wisdom, your expertise, your advice. Not all things are measured by compensation. What you will receive is appreciation and satisfaction. At GAA we are all volunteers.

MOM: One Sunday in May, 1940, my father took a $20 bill and ironed it, sealed it in an envelope and gave it to my mother on Mother’s Day. He said, “We should honor our mothers every day of

the year, not just today.” You may have several fathers, but you only have one mother. My father died at age 57, and my mother remained a widow for 39 years. On this Mother’s Day and on all days, whether you call her Mom, Mommy, Mama or Mother, she’s the one who brought you into the world and she deserves your eternal love.

A Day at the DMV: I recently went to the DMV in San Francisco to renew my driver’s license. The line was out the door and into the parking lot. At another door the appointment line was also out the door. I left and the next day went to the DMV in Daly City at 10:30 AM. Prior to going I phoned DMV to make an appointment, but the earliest one was way past my expiration date. After standing in the outside line for a half hour in the foggy, windy overcast morning, I finally reached the check-in station. I was given a number and asked to wait for it to be called. I sat in one of the few empty seats. I had an interesting conversation with a native San Franciscan who was living in Ireland. He said he was on vacation in San Francisco and wanted to renew his California driver’s license. He had already been waiting in line for 4 hours. At 4:30 PM my number was called, and in a half hour I paid my $35 fee, took a vision test, had my photo taken, and completed a driver’s knowledge test. My test had 18 multiple choice questions (seniors get half the number of questions than non-seniors). I missed only 1 answer (3 is the maximum for passing). In one of the lines, standing in front of me was SF Board of Supervisors President Norman Yee, whom I had the honor of bestowing the Galileo Hall of Merit medallion in 2015. We had a pleasant conversation about Galileo, district elections and the DMV hassle. Supervisor Yee received no special treatment from DMV. I left the DMV office at 5:30 PM, having spent 7 hours there. My advice to persons going to the DMV is to make an appointment 2 months in advance, or if you are going in person, arrive around 2:00 PM. They have to keep you there until you finish everything even after 5:00 PM when they close the doors. So, if you arrive in the afternoon, you’ll most likely spend less total time there. Also take along a good book to read. Good luck!

Yum Yum: The largest chocolaterie in the world is located in Berlin. Fassbender & Rausch has been making and selling chocolates since 1863. When I visited the store in 2017, there was a beautiful chocolate sculpture of the Brandenburg Gate in the window. I wonder what they could have done with the Golden Gate Bridge. The building has several floors and looks like a department store.

Any product that is good should be distributed throughout the world. Coca Cola is the most ubiquitous consumer product. It can be found in the remotest, smallest places. In 1988 it was confirmed that Coca Cola is the best known, most admired trademark in the world. Coke was created in 1886.

Pet peeve: People who say or do things and then apologize. It’s like committing a sin and then confessing. Think before you talk or act!

When things are not going well for you, that too will pass. Think positive, look up, smell the flowers, look at God’s wonderful creations, hug your child, your pet, your friend. Be optimistic. The stock market always rebounds, so will you. Turn a frown into a smile. Do something, but do! And remember the words of Jerome Kern’s song: “Look for the silver lining, and try to find the sunny side of life.”

BETWEEN THE LIONS – Spring 2019 Greetings Mighty Lions! Here’s what happening at Galileo these days.

MAYOR LONDON BREED COMES TO GALILEO Friday, February 15, 2019 was a very exciting day at Galileo and one that will not be forgotten.

This year The Black History Month Assembly returned to the Galileo Auditorium and it was an unforgettable experience for students and staff alike! Mayor London Breed (Galileo Class of 1992, ASB Vice President and BSU (Black Student Union) Officer) was the guest speaker. Everyone was excited that Galileo Graduate London Breed, now Mayor of San Francisco, was coming to address all of us at the assembly!

Some of her aides arrived at Galileo before she did and we showed them the auditorium, our halls and the route she would take as she entered the building and went to the stage. It was exciting meeting them and anticipating Mayor Breed’s visit.

I told administrators that I wanted to be part of the greeting committee--some did not know that I know her. The principal did. It was very emotional for me and as she and her aides approached the Galileo group, she came right up to me and gave me a very warm and wonderful hug! I was the only one to get a hug from her. And before she left, she said to me, “You are amazing!” That, her speech, and the whole event left me teary eyed in a great way! As we chatted back stage prior to her speech, she showed us the 2017 Football Championship Ring she was wearing. We all knew she had a big part in arranging for our players to receive their rings!

Her speech was absolutely amazing and she told her story and was so uplifting to all students with challenges and how they could “rise above.” She mentioned two of her most inspirational teachers--Mr. Bob Eby and Ms. Daphne Luke. Bob Eby is no longer living and she knew that as we talked about it after her speech. I emailed Daphne Luke and her first words were, “OMG!”

Besides talking to the students about what they can accomplish, she also mentioned that JROTC will return to Galileo next fall, partially through private funds she has arranged. All throughout her speech there were huge and loud cheers, but with this news the cheering and applause “brought down the house!” After her speech, a number of us were outside the auditorium in the back and we were chatting and many of her staff were taking photos.

I received this photo from my daughter, who received it from one of her friends on Instagram. Her friend recognized me and sent it to my daughter who sent it to me. And you can see and hear her speech in the attached video thanks to Galileo Media Arts Teacher Hank Machtay.

Mayor Breed was the first to announce the return of JROTC to Galileo and work continues to plan for the return of JROTC in Fall 2019. This is now listed on the course availability document for the Fall 2019 semester and enthusiasm is running high for its return. Our Drum Corps has continued to practice even without JROTC and they sound first class! The JROTC trophies are still on display in the hallway outside Room 157. Galileo administration explained the funding for the return of JROTC; simply the Army will fund half of it and the private donations Mayor Breed secured will fund the other half. Details will follow in the next edition of “Between the Lions.”

WASC REVIEW A three-day WASC review will begin on Sunday, April 28 and run through Tuesday, April 30.

This is a two year review, mandated as Galileo was not granted a Six-Year Accreditation two years ago. All elements of Galileo have been working hard to be successful this time. There are 3 members on the Visiting Review Committee.

GRADUATION The Galileo Class of 2019 will graduate on Tuesday, June 4, 2019 at 1:00pm at the Bill Graham

Civic Auditorium. The Senior Breakfast and Awards will be held on Friday, May 31st and Graduation Rehearsal will be held on Monday, June 3, 2019. It is now mandatory for meeting the Instructional Minutes Requirement for Seniors to be in attendance until the end of the school year.

READ THE PENDULUM ONLINE It’s now possible to read Galileo’s newspaper, “The Pendulum” on line so you can keep up with

what is going on at school. Simply go the Galileo website: galileoweb.org and on the front page on the right hand side you will see Pendulum Online with “Read More.” Simply click on that and you can read each edition of “The Pendulum.”

BOAT DANCE The Boat Dance, formerly the Junior Prom was held on a beautiful night, Saturday, March

16, 2019, from 7-11PM, entitled “Starlight Cruise.” The Boat Dance did compete for attendance with a concert by Rapper YG on the same evening. Those who attended the dance did experience a calm and beautiful evening on the San Francisco Bay.

GALILEO STUDENTS ATTEND LIVE THEATRE PERFORMANCES The Great Leap

Social Studies Teacher Robert Ayala took his Modern World Classes to see this play. As he says “The play stars with the main character in his senior year at Galileo and he even comes out in a Gal basketball jersey. Mr. Ayala says he thought the play would support their class work in order to add depth and humanity to our unit on China after World War II.” Mr. Ayala states: “I am a firm believer in the power of arts integration to add meaning and to enhance understanding in all that we study.”

American coach prepares to take on his protégé (played by Tony Award winner BD Wong)—now grown and bent on crushing the Westerners. But after a public high school star from Chinatown joins the American team, his actions in Beijing become the accidental focus of attention, escalating the fractured history between the coaches.

Funny, urgent, and contemporary, this slam-dunk of a sports drama from award-winning Bay Area playwright Lauren Yee explores identity, global politics, and the collision of cultures and generations. Soaring through time and leaping across continents from the hardball courts of San Francisco’s Chinatown to a Beijing on the brink of revolution, The Great Leap builds tension right up to the buzzer.

King of the Yees Ms. Myrna Maroun took her classes to see this play in March. This play is set in San Francisco’s

Chinatown, very close to Galileo! The play was written by Lauren Yee, who also wrote The Great Leap, currently playing at A.C.T. Following is a synopsis of the story.

For nearly twenty years, playwright Lauren Yee’s father Larry has been a driving force in the Yee Family Association, a seemingly obsolescent Chinese American men’s club formed 150 years ago in the wake of the Gold Rush. But when her father goes missing, Lauren must plunge into the rabbit hole of San Francisco Chinatown and confront a world both foreign and familiar. At once bitingly hilarious and heartbreakingly honest, King of the Yees is an epic joyride across cultural, national, and familial borders that explore what it truly means to be a Yee.

Ms. Maroun comments: “Currently we are studying comedy and at the time of the play, we were studying comedy so I wanted students to attend the play mainly because I wanted them to experience a modern staged comedy for which they would hopefully, in action, see elements of comedy they learned about such as the triggers of laughter and the overarching theme that comedy appeals largely to the mind and not to the heart. In addition, I wanted to provide access to students to the artistry of live theater and to create the opportunity for them to simply have fun and connect with seeing a comedy for which many of them could relate to culturally as Asian Americans, San Franciscans and most of all, as young adults who have familial relationships and expectations. Overall, more than the majority of students expressed great appreciation for attending the play and reported really enjoying it. In fact, one of my students was so moved by the play that she was compelled enough to write after 11:30 p.m. her thoughts and response to the play in the longest email I have ever received by any student to date. Because I thought it would be important for the playwright to also read my student’s thoughts and response to her play, I eventually managed to share my student’s thoughts and response to The King of the Yees directly with Lauren Yee through her agent. Lauren Yee graciously wrote back stating, “Thoughts like Melody’s are why we make theater. I shared her thoughts with my cast and they were so moved and inspired as well. Thanks so much for sharing and really honored to be a catalyst for her trajectory.”

SAD NEWS

Phillip Lum We are sad to announce that Philip A. Lum passed away peacefully on the morning of January

29, 2019 after a brief illness.

He earned his MJ and PhD at U.C. Berkeley, and became a long-time San Francisco Unified School District administrator. Phil served at many locations, including Galileo High School, Lowell High School, Balboa High School, Roosevelt Middle School, and Lincoln High School. He had the distinction of being one of the earliest known Chinese American principals of any high school in the United States, and was the last official principal of Polytechnic High School.

Donna Strazzulla Long time Galileo Secretary Donna Strazzulla, age 71, of Novato CA, passed away on January 26,

2019. A memorial service was held several days later. No other details are available.

EUGENE WING UPDATE Former Science Teacher and ASB Advisor for many years, Eugene Wing, continues on his

rehabilitation path from the stroke he suffered on December 24, 2017. He does Physical and Occupational Therapies each week along with Acupuncture and Acupressure. I see him every 3 weeks for a visit on our “Cleaning Saturdays.” We share the same house cleaners and he and his wife come by my house to “drop off their house keys.” We usually sit in their car to chat so Eugene does not have to get out of the car, into my house and then move around as the cleaners move.

One of his adult sons is getting married this summer and there is always news to tell about the plans! Fridays he has no medical therapies, so it is off The San Francisco Zoo, The California Academy of Sciences, Serramonte, Stonestown, Foster City and the like for his new sport “Mall Hopping!”

His spirits are good and he always greets me with “You are my Sunshine,” and together we sing the song. On our visit on Saturday, March 23, I looked down my street to Monterey Boulevard and saw a coyote coming up the sidewalk toward their car we were sitting in. This was at 10:45am and as the very healthy looking coyote approached the car, it passed in front of us and headed for the middle of the street as it pranced past us. Eugene’s wife Lin took the photos. As an added note, there have been a number of coyote sightings at Galileo, both in the pre-dawn hours and then around 7:45am.

SPORTS UPDATE

WINTER SPORTS WRAP UP The winter season was a successful one for Galileo Athletics. The Wrestling Team led the way

by repeating as City Champions. Three wrestlers won City Titles including junior captain Peter Colias who is now a two-time individual city champion, senior Marino Balinton who was also named the Most Outstanding Heavyweight, and senior Leo Dulanto. Congratulations to second year head coach Ron Griffin, his incredible staff, and the amazing and dedicated athletes who won their second title in a row.

First year head coaches Matt Allen and Annie Wu had a spectator first year taking over the Girls

Basketball program. Seniors Nicole Gonzalez, Angelique Garrett, and Maatii Mobley led the varsity team and were one win shy of making it to playoffs. Look for more success as Coach Allen continues to build the girls program.

Senior Luke Yoda and junior Asa Mobley led the Boys Varsity Basketball Team to another playoff appearance while sophomore Abdul Ali led the Frosh/Soph team to a playoff spot.

Finally, with two new head coaches, both Boys and Girls Soccer Teams had tremendous seasons in what looked to be a rebuilding year. Both teams made playoffs with the boys winning division 2

and the girls finishing second in division 2; next year both teams advance to the more competitive and prestigious division 1.

– Joe Keough, Athletic Director

SPRING SPORTS Swimming

Chelsea Huang is Galileo’s new Head Swim Coach, assisted by. Sheila Burke and Matt Thorson (a volunteer from Google). Chelsea says: “This is my first year coaching and I think the kids are doing really great. We have 26 kids on our team, and I’ve heard this is the biggest the team has been in a while. We practice at the North Beach pool Monday-Thursday and have our swim meets on Friday. Our Varsity team is much larger than it has been in the past and our JV teams are very strong! We are about half way through our season and a lot of our kids are improving and getting best times. This year is the first year that swimming is not doing team scores but has switched to top ten individual rankings that is updated weekly! As of this week (half-way through season) we have 15 swimmers that have top 10 times, some of them have top 10 times in multiple events. I think we can expect to see a lot more names up there by the end of the season and hopefully have the swimmers below move up in rank!

Girls Softball

The Galileo softball team is full of new faces. Freshmen Christine Nunez, Fatama Al and Isabella Imasa have made great strides since beginning practice in January, and each have made great plays in the field. Sophomore Michelle Guan is playing for her first time, and also has grown a great deal in the first months. Ada Wu, a Junior, has been a key contributor on offense and defense despite not playing for a few years. Returning sophomore starters Kylie Lim and Sasha Stremlow have had a wonderful impact on the team as leaders and players, as have senior captains Meghan Balolong, Sofia Zepeda, and pitcher Jacky Avalos. Avalos has done a wonderful job pitching in all four of our games, including 3 games in 4 days the first week of the season. Stremlow has been the standout offensively and defensively and has hit a homerun and has been on base in half of her at bats. Most of our team is lacking in experience, but despite that we’ve been able to put plenty of runs on the board, including twelve runs in our second game against Balboa. Though we are 0-4 on the season, a lot of growth is yet to come. This report is by our new Girls Softball Coach Nathan Barone.

Varsity Baseball

“Hi, my name is Scott Peradotto, varsity baseball head coach. Galileo Alumnus, Fall 1967. I played Baseball/ Basketball at Galileo. This is my first year as head coach of baseball at Galileo. Last season I was head coach of Galileo’s girls Softball. This baseball season our Lions (players) are a mixed group. We had to combined varsity and fr/so into one team, due to a shortage of players. Our seniors deserve to be recognized for their prior years. We have four, Leo Dujardin, Brandon Chhith Ou, Cybastian Dilinila, Aidan Zhu. This allows our program to develop the under classes. It may take another season and more player-recruiting, but we will get there. My career in this sport is approaching 58years. I have had an incredible life in baseball/ softball. My mentors were San Francisco legends in baseball. I will pass on their knowledge to our youth. “

Fencing

Fencing Coach Doron Chen reports, “This season of fencing has been going really well. Our team is fairly small, especially compared to previous years, but we are making it work and everyone is really supportive of each other. The biggest thing I want to imprint into the team is to have good sportsmanship, be courteous, and be humble. Every single member seems to be showing good character during matches, enough that we were actually complimented on our behavior by a few coaches! I’m very proud of the team.

We haven’t really had any issues this year, other than the power going out during one of our home matches. This is my second year as Head Coach, and I think we are doing pretty well for ourselves. Both our girls and boys teams are doing fairly well, especially our girls team. We usually have team bonding events after matches, because I believe that being close with your teammates can result in better performance in both practice and matches. With only two more matches before the All-City Tournament, I hope we can do our best and finish the season strong!”

The final Fencing Home Game is Friday, February 5! Go Lions!

Boys Volleyball

Galileo’s Varsity Boys Volleyball Team with returning 4 starters, is hoping for a deep playoff run. Senior setter, Ryan Huang, an outstanding outside hitter last season, has transitioned well in directing the Lions’ offensive attack. Fellow seniors, Michael Chan and Derick Lam are the big hitters leading the team in kills. Sophomore libero, Randy Talam is the lone non-senior returning starter. Other key players include; senior defensive specialist and ASB president, Vince Liang; sophomore hitters, Jason Wu and Eric Wei; and middles, Will Feng and Ben Barnum, sophomore and freshman respectively. Coach Mark Huynh is back at the helm for his twelfth season after taking a year off. Coach Mark says: “We played 1 match and that was a loss at Lowell. “ Better days are ahead! Go Lions!

Track

March 22, 2019 Galileo Track and Field team traveled to LA to attend the Paramount Invitational Track meet. A total of twenty eight athletes attended and completed, winning a total of sixteen medals. During our trip we also visited UC Irvine and Knott’s Berry Farm where we were able to experience and explore the campus to prepare us better for college as well as spending time together as teammates getting closer with one another and with our coaches. We had an amazing time on and off the field; everyone was very competitive and had the desire to win. It was a well-organized trip by our coaches as we hope for more trips like these in the future and for more support.

Girls Golf

The Girls Golf season concluded this past Fall with the Lady Lions finishing in 5th place in the conference, one match out of the playoffs. The team was led to victories over ICA Cristo Rey Academy and the Balboa Buccaneers by juniors Sherry Deng and Shirley Zou. Newcomers sophomore Layla Chang and freshman Jessica Lee made key contributions down the stretch of the season, nearly upsetting Wallenberg High School and sneaking into the playoffs. This season continued the improvement of Girls Golf at Galileo. The Lady Lions finished in 7th, then 6th place, the prior two seasons. I am looking forward to 2019-2020 as all players have confirmed they intend to return.

Boys Golf is off to a great start, winning our first two matches of the season against Balboa High School and the Burton Pumas. Team captain junior Ryan Lee has earned medalist honors at both matches. He and senior Bobby Ng led the Lions to victory at the Jack Fleming 9 in Harding Park just before Spring Break, vaulting the team into first place in the CIF San Francisco section. The Boys’ next match will be at Lincoln Park Golf against the Wallenberg Bulldogs. A third victory would nearly assure a trip to the playoffs this year after a disappointing 2017-2018 where the boys only won 1 match. After this season we will need to rebuild as half the team will be graduating Galileo.

– Coach Biorn Boys Tennis

The boys’’ tennis team has been in the exciting process of rebuilding this Spring. No one seems to know how long exactly, but the team hasn’t existed at Galileo for about 10 years. Jillian Lim (girls’

tennis captain) and Esteban Dodge (boys’ tennis captain) started the process of petitioning for a boys’ tennis team last year, so it is awe-inspiring that the students led the charge to bring the team back to the Lions’ Den. The tennis campaign was about to shake out about 10 interested boys and an experienced team manager Kylie Tse (girls’ tennis). The team is almost entirely comprised of juniors.

Only about 2 players had any tennis experience prior to joining the team, so the rest of the athletes are learning the game from scratch. Consequently, the team is currently 1-4, but the boys’ have already learned incredible court-side resilience and sportsmanship. Practice has been taking place at the newly renovated Moscone Park where the Lions work on tennis rules, serves, forehands, backhands, positioning, and footwork. They have vastly improved their skillsets from the beginning of the season. Mostly importantly, the newly experienced athletes have been learning a lifetime love of the game.

Flag Football

Our Flag Football Team won the city Championships last season and hope to repeat this again this season. Currently the team is undefeated and hoping to win the title again this year. More information will follow in the next edition.

GALILEO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISING

Since the state has cut back funding to public schools, many of the activities we enjoyed at Galileo now require outside monies to maintain. To date, GAA has contributed to the school newspaper, sports program, and graduation site. With your help, we hope to do even more in the future.

Because of GAA’s nonprofit status, your donations are tax deductible. Your cancelled check acknowledges receipt by GAA.

I’m sure you remember doing car washes, bake sales, whatever you could to raise money for your senior activities. Students now have to work even harder to raise these funds. Don’t forget your Alma Mater. GO LIONS! Tax ID 30-0066848
