NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS:
Global: May all the nations and all the peoples of the world live in peace and harmony and may terrorism be eradicated.
National: May the new administration provide leadership, fulfill its promises and make a better America.
Local: May violence cease to exist as a “solution” to differences, to be replaced by tolerance and love.
Galileo: May students earn good grades, all the athletic teams win championships, and the Academy surpass its successes.

Singin’ in the (rainy) New Year
Bill Dito (’50) hosted a New Year’s Day party at his Marina home. Gifted pianist George Yamasaki played The American Songbook endlessly, tunes of the 20s through the 70s and beyond while we all sang along. Accordionist Robert played Italian love songs and Giovanna Gaskell (’51) emitted beautiful soprano sounds with her still lovely voice. Among the guests were Joe Scafidi (’50), Cordy Surdyka (’52), Laverne LaRocca (’50), Pola and Joe Martino (’50), John (’50) and Ernestine Zuffo, Tom McAteer (the son of the late Supervisor and former Mayoral candidate
Eugene McAteer, along with Bill’s family and neighbors, and yours truly. A grand time was had by all. Thanks, Bill, for being a great host!

We’ve come a long way . . . in basketball, remember when girls could only bounce the ball once before passing it? Otherwise, it was double dribble (walking). Both the men’s and women’s games have evolved to where one or two or even three steps are taken without the ball touching the floor, especially when the player is going in for a score.
Remember telephone party lines? We used to share the same line with another household, and it was impolite to listen to others’ conversations. In the near future we’ll be able to call anywhere in the world at no charge on our smart phones.
At the SF Auto Show in November, the star of the show was a 2014 Pagani, a $2.5 million work of art. It was designed by the former designer at Lamborghini in Florence, Italy.
FACT & FANCY: I think we’re in global cooling, not warming. It’s wine cellar temperature outside!
It’s a fact that women have better taste buds than men. It goes back to caveman days and the preservation of the race.
I bet you didn’t know that Angostura Bitters were made in Port-of-Spain, Trinidad. Many bartenders are not aware of this fact.
When I was a young man I daydreamed a lot. One dream was to go to Copenhagen, meet a beautiful Danish girl and take her to the south of Spain. Sixty years later I have been to Spain (twice). Later this year I’ll be going to Copenhagen to take a cruise. I’m still daydreaming.
Hans Christian Andersen said: “To move, to breathe, to fly, to float; to gain all while you give; to roam the roads of lands remote; to travel is to live.”

The recent horrible shooting incident at the Fort Lauderdale airport reminded us all to be aware of our surroundings at all times. Even with vigilance one can be in the wrong place at the wrong time. I was in that very terminal twice in December. Up on arrival I could not find a single decent place to eat in two terminals. Upon departure 10 days later, I found two gems past the security area. Golf legend Jack Nicklaus’s second restaurant is fun and has good food. The ample open area eatery is decorated with photos of Jack and his illustrious partners. The other was The Food Network Kitchen. I had a great burger and sweet potato fries. Yes, I spent 8 hours in that airport waiting for my flight back to San Francisco.

The final installment of Cicero’s thoughts on growing older:
“Death should be held of no account! For clearly the impact of death is negligible if it utterly annihilates the soul, or even desirable, if it conducts the soul to some place where it is to live forever. What, then, shall I fear, if after death I am destined to be either not unhappy or happy? The young man hopes that he will live for a long time and this hope the old man cannot have. Yet the old man is in better case than the young man, since what the latter merely hopes for, tFrmer has already attained; the one wishes to live long, the other has lived long. My old age sits light upon me…and not only is not burdensome, but is even happy. For as Nature has marked the bounds of everything else, so she has marked the bounds of life. Moreover, old age is the final scene, as it were, in life’s drama, from which we ought to escape when it grows wearisome and, certainly, when we have had our fill.”
Three lessons to take away from Cicero:
1- To age gracefully. 2- To focus on what we have and can do rather than what we don’t have or can’t do. 3- That age is no barrier to remaining engaged with life – intellectually, physically, socially.

Greetings Mighty Lions! Here’s what happening at Galileo these days.
UPDATE ON WILLIAMS SONOMA CIRCLE THE SCHOOL PARTNERSHIP
Our wonderful friends at Williams Sonoma just finished painting and redecoration for one of our Wellness Meeting Rooms, 451A. They included all new furniture from Pottery Barn in their work along with a very large TV. As happened last year for the holiday season, every employee at Galileo received a fancy tin of Williams-Sonoma delicious Peppermint Bark. It is wonderful their employees volunteer and do all the remodeling work themselves.
An exciting activity this year continues with Williams-Sonoma's mentoring with Galileo's Academy of Hospitality and Tourism. During the Spring semester Williams-Sonoma employees will continue to conduct mock interviews with our students to prepare them for employment interviews in the future.
SPRING SEMESTER BEGINS Tuesday, January 3, 2017 is the start of the Spring Semester. As was the case for the past few years, the Fall Semester ended in December with final exams the last week of school.
A FUN VISIT FROM A GALILEO ALUMNI
It’s always fun to welcome Galileo alumni when they come back to school to visit. Many reminisce about their days at Galileo, how long they were here, and what they remember from their high school days. If you come for a visit, be sure to stop into the Main Office to sign-in and say “Hi.” In December a very lively lady stopped in and said she was a Galileo graduate from the class of 1957. Her name in high school was Evangeline Jang and she went on to medical school, got married and she is now Evangeline Jang Spindler, M.D. She lives in Ann Arbor, Michigan and visits her brother in San Francisco every year. We got out the 1957 yearbook and she found her photos on 4 pages and had lots of fun stories to tell. She asked about class reunions and I forwarded her contact information to Charlene Mori, GAA President.
STUDENTS NO LONGER PAY FOR PE UNIFORMS/GRADUATION REGALIA
Starting this year students in the San Francisco Unified School District no longer have to pay for their PE uniforms as well as for graduation regalia (caps and gowns). After charging students for the required attire for both PE and graduation, a student complained about the uniform fees, which prompted the school district to remind schools in the district that they are not allowed to charge money in order to fulfill class requirements. Schools are still able to sell PE uniforms but it cannot be mandatory for students to purchase them. Students may wear their own PE attire as long as their name appears on their clothing. Students who have paid for their PE uniforms can obtain a refund from the school district. The issue of the graduation regalia is still being worked out by SFUSD. More news will follow in the next edition.
SCHOOL DANCES IN JEOPARDY
Attendance at school dances has fallen to an all time low. There is a possibility of having only one school dance a year and that would be the Senior Prom. That would eliminate the Homecoming Dance, the Winter Ball and the Boat Dance. Students who attended the Homecoming Dance said the dance was great, but the ASB (Associated Student Body), due to low attendance, ended up paying $5,000 in addition to ticket sales to fund the dance. One reason for the low attendance at the Homecoming Dance could be due to the fact that many students were taking the ACT the next morning and did not want to be tired for the exam. The Homecoming Dance was held two weeks after the Homecoming Game, which was played at Kezar Stadium starting at 7:00pm. The Homecoming Dance generally costs $10,000, while the Senior Prom costs $40,000. This year the Winter Ball was held on Wednesday, December 14, 2016, after all students had finished final exams. It was held at the Hyatt Hotel near Fisherman’s Wharf. The original price for a ticket was $25.00, and this price increased $5 each week as the dance approached. Dances are no longer held at the school site.
BEAUTIFUL GALILEO WINS
Galileo was recently named one of the most beautiful high school campuses in California! Galileo’s style of architecture, Spanish Colonial Revival, is unique, including the observatory, and open courtyard as well as the view of the field and the San Francisco Bay. Galileo ranks 33 out of the top 40 most beautiful schools in California.
JROTC
During the fall, last semester Galileo JROTC participated in the Annual Fall Competition at Balboa High School. JROTC cadets had been practicing for three months, prior to the competition, and exhibited their best drills at Balboa. As a result, Galileo took home 3rd Place Overall for Individual Drill Down Competition. Unfortunately Galileo did not place in the other units but the cadets still gained a unique experience.
JROTC ended the Fall Semester with their annual Holiday Party on December 16th. Sixty cadets participated in the Caroling Skits and then everyone enjoyed a delicious dinner of Ham, Turkey, Fried Chicken, Mashed Potatoes, Macaroni and Cheese, String Bean Casserole followed by dessert of Cheese Cake and Banana Pudding. Sgt. First Class Stephen Hardee reports not a bite of food was left!
This semester the JROTC cadets intend to take it home at the Spring Competition in May. To motivate the cadets for this event, they will be attending multiple parades prior to competition. Currently, they are focused on selling raffle ticket for the Lions Club Origination; first place prize is a 2017 BMW.
Other competitions in the spring semester include Orienteering and Raiders. Cadets will also be attending an annual event where they gather as a Brigade with an evening competition-free, otherwise known as the Brigade Ball. Cadets will end the year at Camp Parks where they will exhibit what they have learned in the JROTC program with many hands-on activities. All of these events emphasize teamwork and collaboration skills that they hope cadets will keep with them even after they graduate.
VAN NESS GYM RENOVATION The renovation of the Van Ness Gym is almost complete. The walls were repainted due to lead in the old paint, new lights and heaters were installed and the old ladders were removed. New blinds and windows will be installed next summer. Plans are in the works to refurbish the Bay Street Gym and the Weight Room.
FALL 2016 SPORTS UPDATE
Galileo Varsity Football (1-2) The Varsity Football team finished the regular season with a 2-3 record. Galileo clinched a play off spot with a win over Burton (26-14). The mighty Lions then faced the Mission Bears who were undefeated. But the Lions lost to the Bears in the semi-finals of the playoff (49-25). Coach Mark Huynh said: “Our goal was to make the playoffs and we met that goal. There were a lot of injuries to overcome but the team really rallied around each other and that was good to see.”
Cross Country Galileo Boys Cross Country Team had an impressive season, placing at every meet. They worked hard and placed second in the All City finals. The Girls Varsity Cross Country Team repeated last season by placing 3rd in the All City finals.
Girls Volleyball The Galileo Girls Varsity Volleyball Team improved from last year but unfortunately they did not make the playoffs. The team showed consistent efforts and ended the season with a 5-7 record, winning its final game against Balboa which put them in 5th place overall.
Girls Tennis The Girls Tennis Team barely missed making the playoffs. Galileo ended the regular season tied for fourth place with two other schools, but in the playoff off games lost to both Balboa and Wallenberg, with a season record of 2-4. They ended up next to last in 6th place in their division.
Girls Golf Many members of the Girls Golf Team were first time players and they showed lots of ambition. They beat Wallenberg (263-264) and Burton (233-243). They finished the season in 7th place with a 2-6 record.
Galileo Cheerleaders Galileo’s Cheerleaders, or “Lionesses” are a dedicated and spirited group! They participated in a “Cheer Camp” at Galileo for a week over the summer. Private instructors came from cheer movies to instruct and encourage the team. The AAA Spirit Squad Annual Competition was held on December 10, 2016 at Lincoln High School. Go Lions!!

FUNDRAISING FOR THE RESTORATION OF GALILEO’S OBSERVATORY TELESCOPE
Please mark your calendars now to set aside Saturday, June 10, 2017, for the Galileo Alumni Association's 1st Annual Dinner Dance. This function is a fundraiser to fund the restoration of Galileo High's Observatory and Telescope. Your school, Galileo for some 95 years, was the only high school in the country to have an Observatory and a Telescope on its premises. In earlier years, the Observatory was used by the students and the general public to view the moon and the stars. But, time had caught up with the Observatory and it had not been available for any use for some time now. Galileo will be celebrating its centennial year in 2021 and we are planning to perform the restoration and have it re-opened for use and viewing by this date. Therefore, we will be sponsoring many fundraisers this year and in the coming years to meet our objective. It is a lofty goal but we are committed to make it happen with your help and participation. Our first fundraiser for this year will be the event shown below. Please make your best effort to help us kick off our fundraising with your attendance at this event. We look forward to seeing and meeting you there.

GALILEO ALUMNI ASSOCIATION FUNDRAISING
Since the state has cut back funding to public schools, many of the activities we enjoyed at Galileo now require outside monies to maintain. To date, GAA has contributed to the school newspaper, sports program, and graduation site. With your help, we hope to do even more in the future.
Because of GAA’s nonprofit status, your donations are tax deductible. When making a contribution, please use a check, rather than send cash, so you have a record. Your cancelled check acknowledges receipt by GAA.
I’m sure you remember doing car washes, bake sales, whatever you could to raise money for your senior activities. Students now have to work even harder to raise these funds. Don’t forget your Alma Mater. GO LIONS!

2017 HALL OF MERIT INDUCTION DINNER The Galileo Hall of Merit Induction Dinner will be held on Friday, April 7, 2016, at 5:30 p.m. at the Patio Espanol in San

Please mark your calendars now to set aside Saturday, June 10, 2017, for the Galileo Alumni Association's 1st Annual Dinner Dance fund raiser to fund the restoration of Galileo's Observatory/ Telescope. Your school, Galileo, for some 95 years, was the only high school west of the Mississippi to have an Observatory/Telescope on its premises. In earlier years, the Observatory was used by the students and the general public to view the moon and the stars. But, time had caught up with the Observatory and it has not been available for use for some time now. Galileo will be celebrating its centennial year in 2021 and we are planning to perform the restoration and have it re-opened for use and viewing by this date.
Therefore, we will be sponsoring many fundraisers this year and in the coming years in order to meet our objective. It is a lofty goal but we are committed to make it happen with your help and participation.
Our first fund raiser for this year will be the event shown below. Please make your best effort to help us kick off our fundraising with your attendance at this event. If you enjoy dancing or like to see old friends and meet new ones, your participation at our first event and making it a success will guarantee that we will continue to have these fund raisers on a regular basis throughout this year and years to come. Please demonstrate your appreciation and commitment in helping the GAA achieve its goals.
We look forward to seeing and meeting all of you there. Let's all have fun and be a part of something totally worthwhile for our school and it's students. If for any reason you just will not be able to attend, please consider making a donation to our Observatory Fund, it will be greatly appreciated.
