There is nothing that makes you more aware of the freedom we have (and take for granted) than traveling outside of our borders. The word freedom here in the U.S. can sometimes sound so “cliché”. But, I hope that each of us will take a moment this month to truly appre-ciate what the word means to us, knowing we each have different definitions.

For me, my recent travels to Peru reminded me of some freedoms that I’d almost completely forgotten. Like the freedom to jump into my car whenever I want and drive wherever I need to go. The freedom to wash my dishes in hot water. The freedom of knowing that when I turn the water on, it will work. The freedom to put toilet paper in the toilet. The freedom to access the Internet at high-speed. To download a photo in seconds, rather than minutes. The freedom to access diverse and high-quality food.

There are a lot of things that we are ‘free’ to do. However, our parents were right when they said ‘nothing is free’. Much of our freedom is attached to the wealth that we enjoy. And, of course, the wealth that we enjoy is the result not only of our own work, but the work of many. It’s our friends in the military, public service, medicine, science, technology, politics and social service that make these freedoms and the wealth that surrounds us possible. We each contribute in some way to the sustainability of our lifestyle, and many times, it’s quite simply – hard work!

As you kick off your shoes and celebrate our country’s independence this month, whether with neighbors here in our backyards or out and about in San Diego and beyond, I hope you’ll at least take a moment to recognize how blessed we truly are and that while freedom isn’t free, we are certainly free to decide how to celebrate it!

clubs & eVents meet Our new community director

Have you had a chance to meet our new Community Director, Kim Perez? Kim works over in the Visitor’s Center and serves an important role in our community, coordinating community events, helping residents connect and serving as a liaison with the community association.

Kim lives in Fallbook with her husband, Raul. Together they have three boys – age 12, 10 and 1). They most recently came from Arizona where they lived the last two years. However, Kim grew up in Southern California, so she’s happy to be ‘home’ again. Kim grew up in Fontana and attended Cal State Long Beach. She loves being outdoors, whether hiking or sports. She grew up playing tennis, softball, basketball and also snowboarding. She and her family are ‘river people’, enjoying water sports and camping. Kim has two dogs and loves animals, the main reason behind her choice to be vegetarian.

Kim has experience working with non-profit organizations with both volunteer management and grant writing. She is enjoying learning her new duties as our Community Director. You’ll usually find her in the Visitor’s Center Monday through Friday from 8:30 am to 2:30 pm. You’ll see her this month on July 10 at our Movie in the Park night on the lower field of the baseball field at dusk. The movie this month is “Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs”. The next movie night will be on August 21 when “Alice in Wonderland” will be shown.

The HOA Board is looking for feedback from the community about events and Kim will be helping facilitate the survey. Watch for that coming soon and participate so your ideas about future events can be considered.

In the meantime, please make Kim feel welcome and appreciated for her role in San Elijo Hills. You can reach her at (760) 798-9015 or [email protected].

Along with low staff to student ratio and the program’s affordability, it’s a win-win for everyone. This year, they will be accepting children as young as 4.5, but primarily the children that enroll are ages 5-9.

Camp starts July 5th and runs six consecutive weeks. Sign up for as many or as few of the weeks as you like. They offer a mWF, T/TH or Full week program as well as a half-day program on Thursdays. Prices start at $69 for 2-day half-day and go up to $179 for full day/full week. lunch pro-gram is available.

Martha Kaloogian has recently stepped up as President of the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club. The club would like to extend their sincere gratitude to Julie Wells, Past President for her years of service to the club.

Martha lives in Westcliffe with her husband

Howard. She moved here in 2007. Martha loves gardening, cooking and travel. She is very involved at Grace Church and also enjoys involvement in civics. Her husband, Howard Kaloogian, is a former state assemblyman and is still very politically active. Of course, here in San Elijo Hills, Martha is most frequently recognized as the owner of her two-year old, black labradoodle – Zeke!

Martha originally hooked up with the San Elijo Hills Women’s Club because she was new to the area and wanted to meet people. Because of the club, she has formed friend-ships with women from backgrounds and ages. SEHWC

meetings are something she always looks forward to and the fact that they focus on charity makes it even better. The Women’s Club held a special event last month to benefit the International Rescue Committee (IRC). Over 40 neighbors gathered at a home in Westcliffe and enjoyed wine and appetizers, an event that raised over $1000 for the IRC. Attendees got to hear from two teenage refugee girls who are part of IRC’s program. It’s a great example of how with a little creativity and generosity, getting together with neighbors can have a greater impact.

The San Elijo Hills Women’s Club is always expanding and looking for special ways to support things right here in San Elijo Hills. Martha would love to invite you to come to a meeting, call her with ideas and get involved. It’s a great opportunity to connect with other women, socialize, relax and make some valuable, lifelong friendships. In addition to monthly meetings, the group hosts lunch events, movie nights and other fun activities throughout the year. For more information, email them at [email protected].

on your doorstep

i just wanted to tell everyone about a great spot my husband

and i found nearby for awesome burgers and beer. We were unaware

that it even existed until, one day, we saw a little sign by “Dogtopia”

that said “back Alley Grill”. We turned in and parked. The place was so

cute. They have outside tables as well as an inside bar with table seat-

ing. The restaurant makes you feel like you are in Hawaii; you totally

forget that you are in San marcos. it feels like you are eating outside

by the beach. They play this really relaxing tropical music, and have

gorgeous, large open windows that bring a nice breeze into the bar

area. The atmosphere was so relaxing! The owner, michael marx, was

so friendly. He spent quite some time talking to us about the begin-

nings of the restaurant and his future plans for new additions. He is a

really cool guy.

The food was even better! They offer burgers, chicken wings,

chicken sandwiches; occasionally, they serve street tacos. let me just

say that the burgers are the best i have eVer had! They taste like they

came straight off of the backyard grill....but better! The fries were deli-

cious! The beer is great, by glass or pitcher. The prices are reasonable

and the place is just such a refreshing change, and a great place to

escape daily life.

i would most definitely rate this restaurant 5-stars for a fun place

to have burgers and beer.

THAnK You San elijo Hills!

The Huff Family would like to say thank you to everyone in the community who helped search for their lost dog Bailey, a six-pound Yorkie that went missing on June 11. While Bailey has not been found, Ilana and her family would just like to say thank you for the amazing support that rallied throughout the community. “This is what makes San Elijo Hills so special,” said Ilana. “I was completely overwhelmed by the phone calls and the assistance that everyone offered. It meant so much to us and I just want to say thank you to everyone.”

CHriS orlAnDo: CiTY CounCil Last month, despite continuing challenges in the state and national economies, the City Council approved a balanced budget for the City of San Marcos without significant cuts to city services or other drastic measures that many other cities are facing. While effects of the

historic recession persist, San Marcos has remained on solid financial footing and projects its $61.5 million General Fund budget will produce a slight surplus in the coming year. Our stable budget is a result of a combination of operating efficiently and generating alternative sources of revenue.

The largest share, nearly 40 percent, of the City’s operating budget is dedicated to public safety, with $14 million and $10 million spent on law enforcement and our Fire Department, respectively. Public Works, Development Services, Culture and Recreation, and general government sup-port services make up the remainder of the budget.

One of the reasons San Marcos has largely avoided the layoffs and cuts that other cities have experienced in recent years is that the city operates very efficiently. According to the North County Times, Carlsbad, which has a population only approximately 20 percent larger than San Marcos, employs three times as many city workers. San Marcos employs just 237 full-time employees to support a population of nearly 80,000 residents. This lean oper-ating philosophy has allowed San Marcos to keep its expenses down.

Council Approves Balanced Budget

On the revenue side, the largest share of income to the city, just over 40 percent, comes from a combination of sales taxes, property taxes and prop-erty tax in-lieu of fees. These revenue sources have all declined in recent years. Sales taxes dropped 14 percent in the current year and property taxes are down more than two percent. While these declines are beginning to stabilize, revenues remain a challenge.

The second reason San Marcos has maintained a balanced budget is its ability to generate other sources of revenue. Reserves from the city-owned Creekside Marketplace have provided an important backstop during the recession. Rental income from city-owned properties contributes $6.2 million in revenue to San Marcos. The Council approved a transaction that allowed construction on the Marriott Residence Inn, which had been stalled due to the recession, to restart. That project alone will add more than $600,000 in revenue to the city once it opens. These non-traditional, one-time and forward looking strategies for generating revenue have buoyed city finances through several extremely challenging budget cycles. The U.S. economy is not yet out of the woods. And while the coming years’ budget remains balanced, San Marcos must maintain its conservative approach to its finances. We are beginning to see signs of recovery in San Marcos shops and restaurants. A stable budget and several years of good decisions will enable San Marcos to emerge from the recession sooner than many of our neighboring cities and allow us to continue to build a bright future for our city.

people in your neighborhood

Ed and Connie relocated to San Diego from Los Angeles for work reasons. After looking at several neighborhoods for months, Connie and Ed decided on San Elijo Hills for the new schools, the community atmosphere, and the great location. Connie and Ed have been married for 12 years. They have two daughters – Isabel (10) and Katherine (8).

Ed is a sales manager for Hewlett-Packard’s Imaging and Printing Group focusing on commercial sales in the Western U.S. Ed (and the whole family) plays golf at nearby Shadowridge Country Club in Vista, a short trek via Melrose or the 78. Ed is a 6 handicap striving for lower scores and is addicted to the Player Performance Center 3D analysis at the club. The two girls have a golf clinic with other juniors every Saturday morning. Ed also plays basketball at Purefitness every week.

Connie recently started a landscape design business. Her company, xerizen, focuses on conceptual designs for residential outdoor spaces that feature native, desert/succulent, and Mediterranean plant selections - all of which are ideal for a garden that has low water needs. (Visit her website at xerizen.com.) Connie loves gardening and hiking the San Elijo Trails. She volunteers at San Elijo Elementary School and co-chairs the new San Elijo Elementary School Garden.

Isabel and Katherine enjoy playing the piano, reading, and watch a lot of anime online. Isabel is learning Japanese because of her interest in Japanese anime and manga. She wants to grow up to be a marine biologist, thanks to summer camps at Birch Aquarium. Katherine loves to draw, read and hula-

hoop. She wants to be a veterinarian because she loves animals.

The street they live on in Woodley’s Glen has a lot of kids around the same age or young-er, which keeps the girls busy. There are also many work from home telecom-muters in the neighborhood to keep each other company throughout the day. On occasions, holidays, and also randomly, you’ll find frequent block parties where all of the neighbors gather in the cul-de-sac or at someone’s house.

The Arcinue family enjoys San Elijo Hills because of the close commu-nity feeling, beautiful hiking trails, friendly and diverse neighbors, the great elementary school and our location relative to the places they enjoy nearby.

Happy Summer from San Elijo Elementary School! Now that school is out and the children have been home for a few weeks, boredom may be setting in. If you are looking for ways to keep your kiddos enter-tained while increasing their academic growth, consider a writing journal. Journals are a terrific means of practicing writing about topics that interest your child. The research shows that strong writing skills can be the single most important factor to a successful college experience. Too early to think about college? It’s never too early to foster the possibility. In fact, researching and writing about a particular college might be the family’s first writing project!

Journals don’t have to be fancy, expensive items. Staple a few pieces of scrap paper together, decorate the cover and let your child grab their favorite writing tool. Remember, there are no teachers around to tell them what pencil to use! They don’t even need lined paper if they promise to

by lynda mcDonell From the Principal

form their letters correctly. Just get started and move onto a new journal when they fill the first one. Of course, a separate handwriting/cursive prac-tice book is OK as well.

Keeping a journal can be personal, a place to write about non-fiction topics or both. Hopefully, your child is reading this summer and learning many new things as they do. Don’t stop there, ask them to grab their journal and describe what they’ve learned, write a report, write a letter to the author, create a diagram, make lists, etc. They may even want to write a new ending to the story or create a sequel. Who knows, they may be the next famous children’s author!

In kindergarten and first grade students learn to write. Then, as they grow in literacy, they write to learn. Encourage your child to push boredom away by grabbing a crayon, colored pencil, or fancy pen. Happy Writing!

Mom and Dad, I’m Bored!

cOmmunity lifestyle: fitness

update from HeatherSo far, Heather has lost 14 pounds. However, what she

is most excited about is the energy that she has. She loves

working out at re:form and the support of the team there

(Chris/Sarah/Keely & lindsay) is great. Heather is working to

eliminate her dependence on ‘boxed food’ and she’s actu-

ally reached a point where she is enjoying those healthier

choices, not just eating healthy because she has to. July will

definitely be a challenge as her kids are home and they are

more likely to be out and about during the day. However,

she plans to pack her lunches much like she did for work and she will continue

to get up early for her workouts before her husband leaves the house. Heather

is definitely seeing her clothes get bigger, but she isn’t out shopping for new

ones just yet!

update from nicolenicole has been doing well. She wishes the weight

would come off faster, but she’s making progress. She’s

getting her workouts in and is loving that part of the pro-

cess. Summer brings a whole new set of issues with the

calendar, of course! Kids are out of school and the summer

schedule is crazy, including a move within the neighborhood

this month. The nutritionist at re:form fitness, lindsay Petrovay,

came over to nicole’s house this month and removed food

from the cupboards…three bags of food! She’s also helping

nicole replace some of her more common foods with healthier options.

With only one month to go, nicole is a little stressed to beat the clock with

results, but more importantly, it sounds like she’s making some changes that

are not only about weight loss, but also about better health.

Summer Challenges – re:structureSummer is finally here! Warm weather, vacations, beaches…and busy

schedules! For some of us, when our kids get out of school our schedule gets turned upside down. So how do we continue to stick to a workout pro-gram and chose healthy food when we are on the go or out of town?

We’ve got you covered with some great tips to keep you fit during the summer!

commit to a schedule:When our schedules change during the summer months it is easy to get

off track. By planning ahead and making a new schedule that fits into your life, you will be much more likely to stick to your workouts. This means actually writing down the day and time of your scheduled workout so that you can plan around it, instead of planning around your other commitments and obligations. In order for your workouts to be effective, you should pencil in 3-5 workouts throughout your week. Scheduling in advance will help you avoid the common thought, “I will workout later today when I have time.” Unfortunately, putting off a workout usually means it will not happen that day…so put it on your calendar like any other important task.

include friends and family in your plan:Let the people that you spend most of your time with know your goals

and your plan. Encourage them to join you in your workout routine and/or your healthy diet. Studies show that you are more likely to stick with a pro-gram if you have a “buddy” to join you. If they aren’t up for it, at least knowing that it is a priority to you will help them be supportive in your summer plan.

BIGGEST

Keep your health a high priority:As recently reported by the American Cancer Society, researchers suggest

that each year as many as 90,000 individuals die of cancer due to excess body weight. The 16-year study reported in the New England Journal of Medicine, concluded that being overweight accounts for 20% of cancer deaths among American women and 14% among men. We can reduce our risk of many can-cers and other illnesses through dietary changes and physical activity. So don’t feel guilty taking time out this summer to stay active. You are doing yourself and your family a favor by staying healthy. Doing something consistently over time is where you will see change and lasting results.

going on vacation? no problem!

no matter where you are headed this summer, there are ways to

stay healthy while you are out of town. Pick activities that will burn

some calories! Take advantage of fun and different activities that you

might not do at home…hiking, biking, kayaking, water sports or swim-

ming in the ocean are all great ways to burn off some extra calories.

if you like going to the gym, buy a day pass and follow your normal

workout routine or pick out a class that you have wanted to try. enjoy

your meals out, but try to make healthy choices and be aware of your

portions. You truly can fit exercise into your chaotic schedule and

enjoy your summer at the same time. Good luck and have fun!

how important is water in our body?

the human body is composed of about 50 – 75% water. every day, we absorb water to be used by the cells in our body to maintain balance and promote cellular function. we also excrete water in dif-ferent forms through breathing, sweating, urination and defecation. when this balance is disturbed we may end up with dehydration.

what are the symptoms of dehydration?

Dehydration occurs when the balance of water intake and out-put is interrupted. this may be due to vomiting, diarrhea, blood loss, malnutrition and failure to drink enough water, especially dur-ing increase physical activity, such as exercising.

thirst is the body’s mechanism to alarm us of water imbal-ance. signs and symptoms of dehydration include fatigue or weak-ness, light-headedness, dizziness with sudden change in position, such as standing up from a lying down position. other symptoms

include dry skin, dry mouth, dark colored urine, increased heart rate, decreased urination, muscle cramps, headaches, nausea, inability to concentrate. Dehydration can be mild, moderate or severe. severe dehydration can lead to life-threatening conditions due to associa-tion depletion of electrolytes such as sodium, potassium and magne-sium and usually requires hospitalization.

what should i do to maintain water balance in my body?

it is important to be sensitive to our body signals, such as our “thirst signal”. Drink at least 8 glasses of plain water every day. avoid sports drinks that are generally high on sugar.

in times of high water loss such as exercising or illnesses like diarrhea, be sensitive to the signs and symptoms of dehydration and drink more water than usual. remember be aware of your “thirst signal”.

business spotlight

I keep hearing great things from neighbors about this new restaurant, so we went to check it out. The restaurant is located in the Henry’s shop-ping center on Camino de Los Coches. Many of us still remember this restaurant as “Fresco”, but the restaurant has since changed owners and you really should get over there to check it out. It’s getting rave reviews from people throughout the community.

It’s always fun to hear about the people behind a restaurant. The new owner is James Scrivano who has been in the restaurant industry over 25 years. He is originally from New York, but his career eventually brought him to San Diego where he was the Manager of Firenze in Rancho Santa Fe, as well as Vivace at the Aviara Four Seasons. He took a few years off to pursue art and you will find some of his pieces throughout the restaurant.

Enoteca Zin is making hospitality and service their primary goal. They have expanded their staff to include a host and bartender and are training their staff to get to know people that frequent the restaurant.

A true neighborhood restaurant, Enoteca Zin kicks it up a notch with the quality of their food. Their menu is Italian, but covers a lot of regions. You’ll find classic red sauce dishes, veal, seafood, fresh fish and lamb. Their specialties include an artichoke appetizer that you won’t see anywhere, por-tobello mushroom, and osso bucco with a saffron risotto. In addition, they have about 350 wines on their wine list.

So, add Enoteca Zin to your list of places to visit this summer. You’ll find a new energy, creative specials and friendly enthusiasm from the staff,

something that will make you want to become a regular. Enoteca Zin offers Happy Hour nightly from 4 to 7 pm. Dinner is served Tuesday through Sunday and lunch is served Tuesday through Friday. You’ll find great cou-pons here in The Fountain, such as a free entrée when you purchase one entrée and two beverages, half price wine on Tuesdays, and lunch specials. See their ad on page 17.

Reservations are recommended as the restaurant is getting very popular. Call (760) 479-1525. Also, ask about their catering services, which are available for private and corporate events.
