In May 2017, the Administrative Council adopted some church-wide goals for 2017-2018. The five basic areas for these goals are: Hospitality, Worship, In-Depth Bible Study, Missions/Service, and Generosity/Stewardship. The Administrative Council identified two specific goals that we would concentrate on during 2018 which were: recruit and promote Volunteers-in-Mission (VIM) teams to go to the area impacted by Hurricane Harvey on a quarterly basis, and to provide stewardship information, sermons, and practices for the congregation. We also agreed that we would work on the other list of goals as feasible, since ALL the goals work together in harmony to make us a more faithful and service-oriented congregation.
As I looked over the list, I was pleased to see that we have made progress in four of the five basic areas during the past year. That includes: establishing a Hospitality Committee which has implemented several ideas from the group; adding occasional worship dramas to our worship services;
increasing the number of short-term Bible studies offered at the church; and, having volunteers go through the Volunteers-in-Mission training, and sending a team to work in the Rockport area.
I am thankful for the time and commitment of the many people involved in helping to meet these goals, and for finding ways to refine or tweak the goals based on new circumstances. At the July meeting of the Administrative Council, we will revisit the 2018 goals and see which ones we need to give more time and effort to help meet. I would ask for prayers for a renewed enthusiasm and interest as we go about the task of being “light and salt” in this part of God’s kingdom on earth.
Enjoy your summer! Be careful in your travels! Remember that the work of the church continues each and every day! I look forward to seeing you in worship and Sunday school.
Peace and grace,
Pastor Joyce
Joy Notes By Rev. Joyce McCormick
Global Leadership Summit
New Fountain UMC and First UMC Hondo are Partner Organizations with the Global Leadership Conference which will be held at St. Paul Lutheran Church on August 9-10, 2018. This event is open to anyone in a leadership position – at work, at the church, or in one’s own family. The cost to attend is $109 per participant. Businesses and organizations all around the Hondo area have seen the value of having their employees and leaders attend this faith-based conference on best practices in leadership. One of the core statements from the Global Leadership Summit is: “When leaders get better, the whole organization improves.”
Pastor Joyce will be going again this year and is ready to get anyone registered who would like to go. It is well worth the investment. Partial scholarships are available.
THE CHURCH BELL The vestibule and the steeple with bell tower were added onto the
north end of the church during the pastorate of J. A. Pauly, who served
from 1878-1879. Until that time, the sanctuary was just a rectangular
room 46 feet long and 28 feet wide with walls 18 inches thick. The men
used oxen to haul the rock and building materials just as when the church
was built in 1872. In the belfry, hangs the bell that was cast by Henry
McShane and Co., Baltimore, Md. in 1880 with the following inscription in
German:
Ebenezer Kirchen Glocke
M. E. Church S. 1880
Seiein ruf den armen sundern
Ein mahnung Gotteskindern
Amen!
In English, this means:
Ebenezer Church Bell
Methodist Episcopal Church South 1880
A call to the poor sinner
A reminder to God’s children
Amen!
After the bell was installed, the pastor would ring the bell on Saturday evenings at about sunset
to remind parishioners about church service the next morning. Because there were no telephones, the
bell was also used as a way to communicate disaster, fire, death, or gatherings. Pre-arranged signals
would be repeated 3 times to make certain that everyone heard the signal correctly. The bell could be
heard by all homes within a mile or so of the church.
According to Bill Wheeler, son of Rev. W.
B. Wheeler, minister in the early 1940’s, his father
had researched and learned that the bell is the
oldest Protestant bell west of San Antonio.
In the recent past, the bell was rung every
Sunday morning at the beginning of the worship
service. In addition to the standard clapper, there
is a special hammer for striking the death toll.
When a funeral service was held, the toll
hammer was struck once for each year of the
deceased person’s age.
Over the years, climbing the ladders up to
the bell has been a challenge than many teens
and young adults could not resist. Today’s
climbers to the bell might also be interested to
see the signatures of the long ago visitors on the
wall.
UMW Members Sharing Sacred Space
With our Sisters in Christ
Food, Fun and Fellowship at First UMC Hondo was had by all who attended the June 6
th UMW meeting!
UMW members from Hondo, Yancey and New Fountain participated in a baby shower for Blessings Boutique at Providence Place. Janice Highsmith, UMW President for First UMC, did a great job of coordinating the many “shower” activities. Members played games, then feasted on an array of delicious salads and desserts. Fellowship abounded as did the gifts for Blessings Boutique! (see photos)
Congratulations to Annie Wiemers our most recent Special Mission Recognition Pin recipient! Annie has donated hours of her time cutting, sewing, serging and fray checking feminine shields and liners for young women in Ethiopia. (see photo) Thanks to Annie and other volunteers, we are on our way to reaching our goal of 2000 shield kits!!!
