St. Gertrude is a Roman Catholic Parish in the Dominican heritage of prayer, preaching and teaching. The First Sunday of Lent | March 1, 20203

FROM THE PASTOR’S DESK | Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P.

February 29-March 1Here is Part IV of my memories of growing up Catholic with seven brothers in the LaCasse household.

Growing up in a Catholic home, religion was second nature to me. We went to Mass every day as a child. Not necessarily because we were more religious than any other family in our neighborhood, but because daily Mass was at 4:30 p.m. in the late afternoon and the church was only one street down from our home. It was a convenient time for us to be out of the house when Mom needed space to prepare supper. We sang in the children’s choir, served Holy Mass, funerals, weddings, and Holy Hours. Praying the Rosary, crucifixes, pictures of the Sacred Heart and the Immaculate Heart, and praying in French, was second nature to me.

One of the most touching learning moments of my youth involved a picture of St. Therese of Lisieux, or better known as the Little Flower (La Petite Fleur) in the front stairway. My uncle and my father owned a three-story apartment building in Auburn, Maine. My uncle and aunt and their family lived on the first floor. Mom and dad and their 8 boys lived on the second floor. And a family called the Potvins/Morins with 7 kids lived on the 3rd floor. Mr. Potvin died very early and left a widow with seven children. Mrs. Potvin later married Mr. Morin. So the parents were the Morins, but the kids were all Potvins.

You can imagine having all these kids in one building meant that these apartments had to be quite large, and they were. These large apartment buildings had two staircases, one in the front and one in the back. The back staircase was the one used by all these families and it was plain and simple. The back stairwell was washed down by each family every Saturday. The front staircase was off limits and was really beautiful, only used for visiting guests and important people. It was done up in cherry wood wainscoting and beautiful mahogany banisters, railings and risers. There was, of course, beautiful religious art on all the landings. I would have to say that it was the most beautiful part of the apartment building, and we never used it! But it was my job (bellmen privilege as we tell the novices) to clean this stairwell every Saturday. There wasn’t much to clean except to dust the railings and pass the sweeper, on an area that was really not very dusty, nor needed sweeping.

But back to the Little Flower: We had this large and beautifully framed picture of St. Therese of Lisieux with her holding her bouquet of roses and the rose petals falling from the bouquet.

As a little boy I did not understand the picture, so I asked my mother once about it, and my mom taught me that the falling rose petals represented the wonderful prayers of the Little Flower that were being dropped down from heaven for our souls. It was the first time I understood the concept of the intercession of the saints.

So being Catholic and French was as familiar as breathing and eating in my home. As a small child, I thought everyone was Catholic, I knew no different, and that was indeed a good thing. Everyone united under the Holy Name of Jesus Christ. I remember being in the 5th Grade and a sister introduced a new child to the class. I remember her name was Kimberly Smith. What was interesting about her was that she was Protestant. Sister explained in a very nice way what Protestants were and was very respectful. That was the first time I met a Protestant, who turned out to be a very nice girl and a close friend.

We were not rich in any sense of the word, but we were not poor either. We had everything we needed and no more. Dad worked hard in his maintenance business, and as the boys grew up we started working with him. Eventually he named his business, LaCasse and Sons Maintenance. My father took every job that was offered to him, and we cleaned some really terrible places. We washed windows, shampooed rugs, did general cleaning of houses: walls, ceilings, furniture, interior and exterior painting, cleaning offices, etc. I can’t even begin to describe some of the jobs my dad accepted. Once by mistake, because I did not know about mixing chemicals, I mixed bleach with ammonia and passed out. That was another lesson.

We were picked up from school when we were old enough to work, around the 6th Grade, and worked with my dad till supper time. After supper we went and cleaned offices on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday nights. Friday night was the big office cleaning night and at one point dad had three cleaning crews of all his sons spread out all over the twin cities cleaning offices. But we had to work quickly and efficiently because we all had to be home by 10:00 p.m. to watch Dallas. It was a drama show about the rich oil producing family called the Ewings in Dallas, TX. Remember, “Who Shot JR?” That show in the late 70’s and early 80’s was big, and I mean big! Dad would stop and pick up pizzas, and we would arrive home to pizza and Dallas, and lots of drama. I’ll pick up with this next week.

A blessed week to all,

Very Rev. André-Joseph LaCasse, O.P.Pastor/Prior

NEWS & NOTES

Attention, All Men Ages 16+:The Viri selecti is a new parish ministry founded with the primary aim of serving the parish community by preserving the patrimony of the ancient Dominican Rite Mass at St. Gertrude. Learning to serve at the Altar under this form of the Mass requires hard work and dedication, but the graces that accompany your commitment far outweigh the sacrifice of your time. In addition to serving at the Altar, the Viri selecti commit to praying daily for the Church, the Pope, and each other. Throughout the year, opportunities will be provided for service projects, outings, and spiritual exercises as a confraternity. Interested men should contact Ben Hoffmann ([email protected]) with questions.

CALLING ALL HANDS

Volunteers Needed for Parish Health MinistryThe St. Gertrude Parish Health Ministry is in need of volunteers to join the Health Cabinet. This committee plans and oversees the health ministry at St. Gertrude. We need health care professionals and others interested in whole person health in body, mind and spirit. The minimum commitment is attending a 1 to 2 hour meeting once a month excluding summer and December. It also involves helping with at least one project the health ministry offers each year. We currently are responsible for the prayer shawl ministry, blood pressure screenings, health education classes and articles in the bulletin, card ministry, follow up on calls to those on the sick call list, personal health counseling and referrals for those in need. For more information, contact Jeanne Palcic at [email protected] or call 513-317-4123.

Please make every effort to attend this important event. Invite a friend. Any practicing Catholic woman who is 18 or older from any parish in the Archdiocese of Cincinnati is welcome to join! But I can practice little things: first – sleep without a pillow; keep myself a little hungry; every day, with my arms outstretched, say the chaplet which the Lord taught me; occasionally, with arms outstretched, for an indefinite period of time pray informally. Intention: to beg divine mercy for poor sinners, and for priests, the power to bring sinful hearts to repentance. (Diary, #934)

In partnership with NET Ministries, the Office for Youth

Evangelization and Discipleship is happy to present Awake, a Jr.

High youth rally. Awake seeks to accompany 6-8th graders

through an event that will provide opportunities for fellowship,

worship, and encounter. The event is open and accessible to any 6-

8th grader and will feature a meal, entertainment, music, games,

small group conversation, a keynote testimony, Eucharistic

adoration, and the opportunity for the youth to receive the

Sacrament of Reconciliation.
