From Your Interim Pastor

By Pastor Tatum

With this past Sunday’s Special Business Meeting (September 25, following worship and lunch), the work of your Transition Team came to a close. With minor modifications, the recommenda-tions presented by the Team were approved by the congregation.

I express my appreciation for each member of the Transition Team. Though not every member of the Team was able to serve for the full length of the Team’s journey, each member made a contribution.

Toward the end of the Team’s service, a Pastoral Leadership Expectations Survey was distributed to the FBC community. Those who filled out the survey were asked to select 12 of 42 possible Pastoral qualities that are needed in FBC’s next Pastor. 50 people completed the survey. Following are the 12 items in the survey that were selected the most times, beginning with the items selected the most times.

Our Church needs a Pastor who is an effective preacher/speaker, makes pastoral calls on people in hospi-

tals, nursing homes or confined to homes, is a compassionate and caring person,

sensitive to other's needs, is a helpful counselor, helps people develop their spiritual life, encourages people to relate their faith to

their daily lives, builds a sense of fellowship among the

people with whom he works, works regularly to bring new members

into the church,

is mature and emotionally secure, deals effectively with conflict, is effective in planning and leading

worship, and ministers effectively to people in crisis

situations.

Thanks to everyone who completed a survey.

Another item of business at the recent business meeting was voting on the persons nominated by the Advisory Committee to serve on the Pastor Search Committee. The congregation elected all five nominees, so your Pastor Search Committee consists of:

Troy Filburn, Colleen Pierre, Kevin Porter, Keith Sprenger and Terry van den Heever.

Please be in prayer with your Pastor Search Committee.

Adult Sunday Morning Class Study on the Book of Acts

led by Terry van den Heever

Jesus said, “I am going away.” The disciples heard nothing else after that, not even when He promised to send the Holy Spirit to teach and empower them. They must have thought it was impossible to carry on without Jesus. Then came Pentecost and the disciples were transformed into apostles. Join us as we discover the Acts of the Apostles, as the Holy Spirit created the Church and the Gospel spread to the ends of the earth. It will be an exciting journey!

MISSION: CAPITAL FUND OF SARATOGA COUNTY

Back in May FBC sent a mission team to help with the Saratoga Springs Horse Show, put on by the Capital Fund of Saratoga County.

The Saratoga Springs Horse Show is the first USEF Premier (AA) Rating and USEF Jumper 4/3 Rating Outdoor Show in the Northeast! The show features Hunters, Jumpers, and Equitation classes held in three rings.

All the profits from the show are donated to local charities and the funds are distributed based on the volunteer hours worked and the volunteer’s weighted vote for the volunteer’s top 3 charities.

On Thursday, September 1, Tom Fueston, volun-teer, President/CEO of the show presented three checks to the First Baptist Church. $800 was given to the Carol Pritchard Scholarship, received by Cheryl Dunkelbarger; $1,180 was given to the Summer Lunch Program, received by Joan Anderson; and $1,000 was given to Christ’s Cupboard Food Pantry, received by Pat Stack.

BUDGET AND FINANCE

Through the month of August, we continue to have a net deficit on our income statement with an income of $145,618 and expenses of $156,245, giving us a deficit of $10,627. Our Pledged giving continues to be behind by $12,327 through the month of August. However, with the return to normal church service hours, we will surely make up some ground on our Pledged giving, and I am confident that we will continue to do so through the remainder of the calendar year.

With that thought in mind, it is the time of the year to start thinking about what you would like to see in the church budgets. Remember that our annual budget is based on our estimates of giving. The Boards have received their budgeting worksheets from our Treasurer and will be preparing their 2017 budgets to be turned into the Budget & Finance Committee. If you have requests for expenditures in 2017, please see the Chairman of the respective boards or me to share your thoughts, as work on next years’ budget has begun.

It is also time to start thinking about your 2017 pledges, and as a part of this year’s Stewardship campaign, FBC will be introducing online giving options for the congregation using credit cards and monthly ACH bank withdrawals. More information will be made available to the congregation later this month.

As we are about to celebrate the 225th anniversary of the First Baptist Church of Ballston Spa, I think about the hard work and sacrifice of all those people who came before us to build and keep both our church facility and church community going strong throughout the years. I pray to our Lord, much like they did, that he will continue to strengthen us and guide us to do good work in his name.

Please feel free to share your thoughts with me regarding anything that your Budget and Finance committee does. Your comments and questions are always welcome.

Troy Filburn

THE BOARD OF DEACONS

Summer has passed and the activities at our Church are increasing. As your board of Deacons we are busy praying and planning for the coming months’ Worship Services. Our Worship together is a very special time and opportunity for all of us and each time we worship together represents a special opportunity for the Spirit to move among God’s people unlike any other time. God uses our time together to strengthen, encourage and do things we may not ever have expected. Therefore we invite all to come and gather for the coming months as we will worship and celebrate special times and events together.

In October we will remember our past and look forward to our future as we will celebrate 225 years together as a Church and baptize four new members.

In November we will remember loved ones with a special service and we will have the opportunity to commit to our future by committing to support our church financially on Commitment Sunday.

In December we will celebrate the Advent Season together. It is a special time together as families will help lead our worship service through special readings, music and advent candle lightings.

We invite and encourage all to be present for these special times together.

The Deacons remind all to be in prayer for the Pastor Search Committee. It is an exciting and special time in the life of our church. The Commit-tee has been approved and has begun to meet, pray and make final preparations before beginning the search for our next Pastor.

Romans 8:14-15 reminds us that as Christians we are sons and daughters of the living God, adopted and born into His family. Because we are His sons and daughters, God loves you, God protects you, God provides for you, God plans for you, God hears you and God claims you as His own. What a wonderful thought to carry us through this season together.

Serving together, Bob Staulters

WORLD MISSION OFFERING

Celebrate New Life in Christ “on Earth as in Heaven” Matthew 6:10, NABRE

A great and surprising spiritual awakening is happening in Baptist churches in Cuba right now! Since 1990, the number of churches in Cuba has grown by 450%. The number of baptisms has risen by over 500%. And the number of prayer groups and total church memberships have climbed in equally high numbers.

After decades of harsh restrictions, “the church of God has risen from the ashes,” says a retired Cuban church leader who witnessed the remark-able change firsthand. “In God's time, the hearts of so many people have been opened up to the goodness of the gospel.”

The good news is that our church’s support of the World Mission Offering (WMO) is helping to fuel the growth of the Eastern Cuba Baptist Conven-tion through financial and global worker support and through International Ministries (IM)-sponsored pastor conferences.

The better news is that there is a lot that we can learn from Cuba's spiritual revival. For example:

Youth ministry is thriving through camping and sports ministries, concerts and youth rallies in the streets of Cuba's cities and towns.

Spirit-filled outreach is yielding abundant fruit through evangelistic campaigns, undergirded with fervent prayer and fasting.

Discipleship is spreading through numerous house churches and cell groups of prayer.

A new generation of leaders is growing through faithful teaching at seminaries and lay training centers.

And perhaps the best news of all is that Cuba’s spiritual awakening is but one of many thriving ministries run by IM partners and more than 1,800 long- and short-term global workers in more than 70 countries around the world. IM’s vision is “on earth as in heaven,” which reminds us of God’s invitation to participate in his work in the world. And that’s just what IM is doing-through your support of the WMO-by praying, equipping,

serving, proclaiming, teaching, inviting, healing and encouraging in the name of Jesus.

Your gifts to the WMO help to raise up, place and send new global servants and volunteers to reach and touch lives for Jesus around the world. They also help to fill gaps for those workers who haven’t yet reached their support goals, enabling crucial ministries to continue.

Your gifts help support IM's more than 240 global partners who are actively sharing God's message of hope, love and healing with a lost and hurting world. (see Nile’s update on following page).

Your gifts help recruit and train new global work-ers, open up new global mission fields, respond to global disasters with relief and development funds through One Great Hour of Sharing and much more.

The 2016 World Mission Offering will be received during worship each Sunday during the month of October.

Whether God is calling you to GO as a short- or long-term global servant or to GIVE financial support, let us join together to touch as many lives as possible in more than 70 countries around the globe.

Give generously and expectantly to the WMO as, together, we help people everywhere come to Christ, grow in their relationships with God and change their worlds through the power of the Holy Spirit.

Is God is calling you to learn more about how you or your church can volunteer with Baptist partners in Cuba? Please contact mary.weaver@inter nationalministries.org for general information or [email protected] for volunteer information.

PLEASE HELP! Baptists in Cuba and the Dominican Republic have requested our help with scholarships and supplies for youth camps and gatherings. With an overall 10% increase in undesignated gifts to the World Mission Offering (WMO), we can respond to that call. Our congregation’s 2016 WMO goal is $2,500.00.

BOILED POTATOES AND A CHOIR

Excerpts from a newsletter from Wayne and Katherine Niles, Missionaries serving in the Democratic Republic of the Congo. (AB International Ministries/ World Mission Offerings)

We should have known better. It was an ambitious agenda: visit 3 hospitals, 3 church districts, and 2 health zones, each at the end of miles of deep sandy road. It was a combined effort, I providing our land cruiser, and Rev. Bavuidinsi, General Secretary of Congo Baptist Community (CBCO), providing the authority of his office to heighten the importance of our supervision visits. He visits the churches while we visit the hospitals.

Dry season turns roads into treacherous stretches of beach sand, so I thank God for my jeep. We got a late start so pitch darkness caught up with us. Unexpectedly, the high ridge of a sandy rut gave way, sliding the jeep into thick sand. The driver sighed, got out, and dislodged the shovel from its place under the back seat. Two men came out of the darkness as Pastor Bavuidinsi noticed palm branches lining the road. We were stuck a mere 300 feet from the local CBCO church, where the faithful had waited half the day for Pastor Bavuidinsi to pass! God ordained this sand trap!

Shortly a group of singing women gathered, the beat of their pwita (drum) resonated into the night. Church members and curious villagers came out of the darkness jubilantly, all marveling at God’s providential sand trap so they could meet Pastor Bavuidinsi! We otherwise would have passed in the night not knowing we were anxiously awaited.

In that darkness, to the drum beat, the women sang, and the men took turns digging. This “choir” went expertly to work, singing all the while. Pres-ently, having dealt with the ridge to their satisfac-tion, youth pushed from behind – and with a roar, the jeep lurched from the sand pit onto firmer ground. The village cheered! We were on our way.

Two days later, we headed back at dawn’s first light. We found breakfast tables set up under a tree and our hosts welcomed us with thermoses of tea and

boiled sweet potatoes. After laying the table, the ladies again took up their pwita and sang for our breakfast. When we continued on our way, we were less spiteful of the deep sandy stretches encountered on the remainder of our trip.

Thank you for your prayers and support for our work in Congo, and for the work of International Ministries around the world. Through our faithfulness together, may God’s Kingdom come on earth, as it is in heaven.

COMMUNITY BIBLE STUDY

Community Bible Study (CBS) is a national and international nonde-nominational Bible study. The only

textbook is the Bible and a workbook with questions and observations by biblical scholars. We have begun a new prayer group (precursor to a full on “class”) in Clifton Park meeting at Shenendehowa United Methodist Church (971 Route 146 Clifton Park). We began last year with four of us and have expanded to 25 – God is good!

You will have homework, but a day’s lesson can be accomplished in 10-20 minutes and makes a wonderful part of your daily devotions. (Or, you can leave the lesson until the night before and do the whole thing in one shot! Probably not the best idea!) For moms with preschoolers or who homeschool, childcare is provided and the children will have a Bible lesson as well. We meet

on Wednesday mornings from 10 – 11-30.

CBS is a great opportunity for growth in faith, fellowship and cultivating friendships based on the desire to draw closer to God. Please look at the website – communitybiblestudy.org – to learn more about the program. If you would like to talk more about CBS, please feel free to call me at 585-259-3113. This fall we are studying the amazing book of Daniel and it is generating some thoughtful discussions. I’m new to Saratoga and the area but not new to CBS and I knew I could turn to CBS as a wonderful source of friendships. I’m hoping that some of the women from FBC will join me and give CBS a try. There are brochures about CBS at the Welcome Center.

CHURCH MOUSE NURSERY SCHOOL

We have had a wonderful beginning to the 2016-

17 school year at the Church Mouse. We have full

classes, except for a few openings in our after-

noon 4 year old class. We also have an afternoon

3 year old class, so our afternoons are busy! There are usually tears at the beginning of the year, but

it has been pretty quiet this year.

Our staff knows just what to do to

engage each child so they feel comfortable and happy. I think

there were more parents crying

than students this year!

Our entryway is

complete with new

paint and “lower”

railings and beautiful decals made by

James and Cynthia

Pritchard. There is a

beautiful welcome with our mouse, an alphabet tree and letters placed randomly on the walls.

Olivia Pritchard did a great job placing some of the

letters! We have had so many comment on how

beautiful it looks!

We had our Parent Night on September 26. This is

a great opportunity to connect with our parents.

Communication is so important. We are very thankful for our wonderful, supportive parents.

The Parent Forum has met, and has been making

plans for the coming year. They are having their

first movie night on Friday, October 21 at 6:30 p.m. They will be showing the movie Zootopia. All

are welcome!

The students enjoyed their visit to

the Ellms Family Farm. This is one of our favorite trips. They have various

hands on activities, including a corn

maze. The children enjoyed cider and cider

doughnuts, and each child brought home a pumpkin that they were able to pick right out of

the pumpkin patch.

October is Fire Prevention Month. The 4 year old classes and our Pre K class will walk to Union

Firehouse. The firefighters will visit our school for

our 3 year old classes. We appreciate the time the

firefighters spend with us to help the children

learn about fire safety.

We are so happy to have Time 2

Learn in our building. Nicole Eddy and Joan Faraone (a former

Church Mouse parent), are

enjoying their 2 classes of 2 year

olds. Some of our parents who have younger siblings have taken advantage of

this program. They are very thankful for the use of

this space.

I introduced Chapel time in

September. This month we will

tell the story of Creation and

Noah’s Ark. Mrs. Morelock will play the piano as we learn new

songs.

“Play is often talked about as if it were a relief

from serious learning. But for children, play is serious learning. Play is really the work of

childhood.” Fred Rogers

Serving Christ together,

Cheryl Dunkelbarger
