DECLARACIÓN DE MISIÓN DE OLQP La parroquia de la iglesia católica Nuestra Señora Reina de la Paz se dedica a dar testimonio de las enseñanzas de Jesucristo, especialmente el Evan-gelio de San Mateo, Capítulo 25:21-46. Nuestra misión es nutrir el espíritu y alentar el potencial de aquellos a quienes servimos a través de la cele-bración litúrgica, labores educativas y ministerios sociales. La parroquia continuará identificándose con su origen como una comunidad afro-americana, pero reflejando una congregación multi-étnica y continuará promoviendo la armonía racial y la justicia social. Si bien es cierto que nuestro enfoque principal es la vecindad comunitaria, con-tinuaremos trabajando para proveer por el bienes-tar de los más necesitados en general. Es así como nos esforzamos para hacer de nuestra comunidad parroquial una familia que comparte y se preocupa por sus miembros.

OLQP MISSION STATEMENT Our Lady Queen of Peace Catholic Church is dedi-cated to witnessing the teachings of Jesus Christ, especially the Gospel of Saint Matthew, Chapter 25:31-46. Our mission is to nurture the spirit and to encourage the potential of those we serve through liturgical celebration, educational endeavors and social ministries. The parish will continue to identi-fy with its origin as a Black parish. As a multi-ethnic congregation we will seek to promote racial har-mony and social justice. While our primary focus is within the immediate community, we will also work to provide for the well-being of the down-trodden everywhere. In this we strive for our par-ish community to be a caring, sharing, and loving family.

tion to attend Mass on Sundays and holy days of obligation.

disposable face mask. Please bring your own. Parishes may

have a l imited supply designated for those in true need, not

for general distr ibution.

Hand Hygiene · You are expected to disinfect your hands when

entering the church and encouraged to do so again

immediately before receiving Communion. Please bring your

own hand sanitizer, which should contain at least 60% alcohol.

2DA COLECTA PARA EL PLAN COOPERATIVO DE MISIONES MISSIONHURST – 15-16 AGOSTO

El fin de semana del 15-16 de agosto nuestra segunda colecta apoya la petición anual a favor del Plan Cooperativo de Misiones en nuestra diócesis. La organización de nuestra misión parroquial es Mission-hurst. Missionhurst es el Ministerio de la orden católica de la Congregación del Inmaculado Corazón de María. Su propósito es inspirar a los fieles cristianos americanos a convertirse en co-misioneros en oración y apoyo financiero. Missionhurst ayuda a servir y cuidar de los hijos e hijas más pobres y más olvidados de Dios por todo el mundo - en los Estados Unidos, África, Asia, América Latina y el Caribe. Missionhurst ayuda esas áreas que sufren los efectos de la inestabilidad política y que carecen de programas socio-económicos. Missionhurst también es donde recurrimos para obtener a un sacer-dote cuando necesitamos un sustituto aquí en OLQP. Estamos muy agradecidos por esto. CAMPAÑA ANUAL DE OLQP PARA RECOGER MATERIALES ESCOLARES

Por favor ayúdenos con esta tradición de OLQP. ACTUALIZACIÓN: EL PROGRAMA AGROFORESTAL DE MEDOR En los primeros 6 meses del año 2020 los agricultores en Medor pu-dieron rehabilitar los ocho viveros establecidos de árboles en la parro-quia como también iniciar dos nuevos viveros, cultivando más de 31,500 plántulas de árboles. Durante la temporada de lluvia las plán-tulas se trasplantan de los viveros a las laderas degradadas, a los te-rrenos de los agricultores y al lado de suministros de agua. A cambio del trabajo que hacen en los viveros, los agricultores que participan se ganan “dinero de árboles” que pueden redimir por entrenamiento en técnicas perfeccionadas, semillas para sembrar y herramientas agríco-las. El programa agroforestal de Medor está ayudando al ambiente mientras que también aborda cuestiones relacionadas con la pobreza y la inseguridad alimentaria. Ya que las mujeres participan por igual en el programa, también promueve la igualdad entre los géneros. Gracias a la Smallholder Farmers Alliance por implementar el programa. MISSION COOPERATIVE PLAN (MCP) 2ND COLLECTION: MISSIONHURST -- AUGUST 15-16

On the weekend of August 15-16 our second collection sup-ports the annual Mission Cooperative Plan Appeal for our diocese. Our parish mission organization is Missionhurst. Missionhurst is the Ministry of the Catholic Order of the Con-gregation of the Immaculate Heart of Mary. Its purpose is to inspire the American Christian Faithful to become co-missionaries in prayer and financial support. Missionhurst helps serve and care for God’s poorest and most neglected people around the world in the United States, Africa, Asia, Latin America and Caribbean. Missionhurst helps those areas that are affected by political instability and are lacking socio-economic programs. Missionhurst is also our go-to resource for extra clergy when we need a substitute here at OLQP. For this we are most grateful. If donating by check, please make your check payable to our parish and put “MCP” on the memo line. Through your sup-port, the MCP Appeal helps these mission organizations form vibrant faith communities and strengthens the global Church. Please be generous.

OLQP ANNUAL SCHOOL SUPPLY DRIVE

Please help us with this OLQP tradition. While the pandemic means Arlington and Alexandria schools are starting school online, at least initially, children still need supplies. This is especially important for those families who may have lost a job or face eviction. This year, we will provide a bag of sup-plies including some pandemic related items, but NOT back-packs. You can help in 3 ways--donate money through the link on the parish website, buy supplies and drop off or ship to OLQP, or make child or adult size masks. UPDATE: MEDOR’S AGRO-FORESTRY PROGRAM

In the first 6 months of 2020 the farmers in Medor were able to rehabilitate the eight established tree nurseries in the par-ish as well as initiate two new nurseries, growing over 31,500 tree seedlings. During the rainy season the seedlings are transplanted from the nurseries onto the degraded hillsides, in farmers’ plots, and along water sources. In exchange for working in the tree nurseries, participating farmers earn “tree currency” which they can redeem for training on improved farming techniques, crop seeds, and agricultural tools. Medor’s agro-forestry program is aiding the environment while addressing poverty and food insecurity. Since women participate equally in the program, it also fosters gender equi-ty. Thank you to Smallholder Farmers Alliance for implementing the program. Thank you to OLQP for financing it. Thank you to the farmers in Medor for doing the work involved in mak-ing the program so successful.

Contribu-tions can be brought to the Parish Office kitchen Monday through Friday between 8:30- 3:30 labeled "Carpenter’s Shelter" and placed in refrigerator, freezer, or counter. If delivering on the day of dinner, bring to Father Ray Hall between 4:00 and 5:00 pm. If bringing food directly to Car-penter’s Shelter, label clearly “OLQP, Dinner & Date", and call them to let them know you’re dropping off. Thank you!

MATTHEW 25 Is OPEN — New times and days are as

follows: Thursday and Saturday from 9-11am on the patio

of the Ministry Center. Due to safety concerns, we will only

open the collection bins on Thursdays and Saturdays to

follow the CDC guidelines to give the donations the proper

amount of time to be safe to handle. We are only taking

summer clothing, housewares, and shoes. Thank you for

75TH ANNIVERSARY PARISH DIRECTORY UPDATE

We continue working with LifeTouch to publish the parish directory. Even though LifeTouch has closed their publica-tion operations due to the COVID-19 pandemic, we have been able to finalize the parish directory and put it into the queue for printing. While there is currently no estimate from LifeTouch regarding when their operations will reo-pen, once they do, the directory will be printed and deliv-ered. JUST A THOUGHT, OR TWO….In the midst of the Black Lives

Matter protests the weight of history continues to bear down

upon us and this week we observe memorials of the bombings

and destruction of the cities of Hiroshima (Thursday) and Na-

gasaki (Sunday). We find ourselves in the midst of a pandemic

with no real national leadership or plan, over 150 thousand

Americans have died, hundreds of thousands have or have

had the coronavirus. We are living in scary and uncharted

times. And in the midst of these scary and uncharted times

our God walks with us and promises that nothing, no thing can

separate us from God’s deep and passionate love for each and

everyone of us.

In the beautiful first reading from the prophet Isaiah we hear

the call from God to come to the water, to receive grain and

eat without paying — without cost we shall eat well; we are

called to come and listen, that we may have life! All who hun-

ger and thirst are invited, such generosity...an overflowing of

abundance of God’s desire that our needs be met because we

are God’s beloved!

We encounter this generosity again in the Gospel, known as

“The Feeding of the Five Thousand”, but that is a misnomer,

as it clearly states in the last line that only the men numbered

five thousand. The women and the children were not includ-

ed among the five thousand. The theologian Megan McKenna

posits that the real number was much greater. If the majority

of the five thousand men were there with their families, she

says the number would quickly soar past fifteen thousand and

maybe even twenty thousand! Now if we thought the feeding

of the five thousand was astonishing, the feeding of the twen-

ty thousand is “mind blowing”! Again, showing forth the lav-

ishness of God’s care and love for us, for all of us, of every

color, every race, every ethnicity, every gender, every orienta-

tion, every ability, every socioeconomic class, EVERYONE!

And it is our duty as “the beloved” to carry this message to

the ends of the earth, not just with our words but with our

actions. We must stand up against all forms of racism and big-

otry. We must vocally call it out for what it is whenever and

wherever we see it. Like the song says “change is gona come”

but only if, as John Lewis said, only if we get into some “good

trouble”.

And so I close with John Lewis’ final words “So I say to you,

walk with the wind, brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of

peace and the power of everlasting love be your guide.”

Mr. Lewis, the civil rights leader who

died on July 17, wrote this essay shortly

before his death, to be published upon

the day of his funeral.

While my time here has now come to an

end, I want you to know that in the last

days and hours of my life you inspired

me. You filled me with hope about the

next chapter of the great American story

when you used your power to make a

difference in our society. Millions of peo-

ple motivated simply by human compas-

sion laid down the burdens of division.

Around the country and the world you

set aside race, class, age, language and

nationality to demand respect for human

dignity.

That is why I had to visit Black Lives

Matter Plaza in Washington, though I

was admitted to the hospital the follow-

ing day. I just had to see and feel it for

myself that, after many years of silent

witness, the truth is still marching on.

Emmett Till was my George Floyd. He

was my Rayshard Brooks, Sandra Bland

and Breonna Taylor. He was 14 when he

was killed, and I was only 15 years old at

the time. I will never ever forget the mo-

ment when it became so clear that he

could easily have been me. In those days,

fear constrained us like an imaginary

prison, and troubling thoughts of poten-

tial brutality committed for no under-

standable reason were the bars.

Though I was surrounded by two loving

parents, plenty of brothers, sisters and

cousins, their love could not protect me

from the unholy oppression waiting just

outside that family circle. Unchecked,

unrestrained violence and government-

sanctioned terror had the power to turn

a simple stroll to the store for some

Skittles or an innocent morning jog down

a lonesome country road into a night-

mare. If we are to survive as one unified

nation, we must discover what so readi-

ly takes root in our hearts that could rob

na of her brightest and best, shoot un-

witting concertgoers in Las Vegas and

choke to death the hopes and dreams

of a gifted violinist like Elijah McClain.

Like so many young people today, I was

searching for a way out, or some might

say a way in, and then I heard the voice

of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. on an old

radio. He was talking about the philoso-

phy and discipline of nonviolence. He

said we are all complicit when we toler-

ate injustice. He said it is not enough to

say it will get better by and by. He said

each of us has a moral obligation to

stand up, speak up and speak out. When

you see something that is not right, you

must say something. You must do some-

thing. Democracy is not a state. It is an

act, and each generation must do its part

to help build what we called the Beloved

Community, a nation and world society

at peace with itself.

Ordinary people with extraordinary vi-

sion can redeem the soul of America by

getting in what I call good trouble, neces-

sary trouble. Voting and participating in

the democratic process are key. The vote

is the most powerful nonviolent change

agent you have in a democratic society.

You must use it because it is not guaran-

teed. You can lose it.

You must also study and learn the les-

sons of history because humanity has

been involved in this soul-wrenching,

existential struggle for a very long time.

People on every continent have stood in

your shoes, through decades and centu-

ries before you. The truth does not

change, and that is why the answers

worked out long ago can help you find

solutions to the challenges of our time.

Continue to build union between move-

ments stretching across the globe be-

cause we must put away our willingness

to profit from the exploitation of others.

Though I may not be here with you, I

urge you to answer the highest calling of

your heart and stand up for what you

truly believe. In my life I have done all I

can to demonstrate that the way of

peace, the way of love and nonviolence

is the more excellent way. Now it is your

turn to let freedom ring.

When historians pick up their pens to

write the story of the 21st century, let

them say that it was your generation

who laid down the heavy burdens of

hate at last and that peace finally tri-

umphed over violence, aggression and

war. So I say to you, walk with the wind,

brothers and sisters, and let the spirit of

peace and the power of everlasting love

be your guide.
