With the start of a new decade, we have already seen everything from the devastation of the bushfires locally at Pechey to, more recently, the welcome rains we have so longed for. As this newsletter goes to print, the view out from the resort (and especially the Pinnacle Country Club) is so green and breathtaking right now.

I am pleased to report that our wonderful residents recently organised and held a Bushfire Appeal Concert. The local Rural Fire Brigade had been telling us about their difficulties when fighting the recent fires at Pechey without the help of good communications, so our community swung into action. Residents raised more than $7000 and Palm Lake Resort management matched that effort dollar for dollar. The whole day was a great success and we presented a cheque for $14,505 to the Rural Fire Brigade at Cabarlah so they can deck out their trucks with satellite phones, radio kits and tablets for mapping purposes (pictured above). What a wonderful effort by all those Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba residents who were involved.

Our most recent major event was our ‘In the Mood’ concert which proved to be very popular with so many new faces attending on the day. The Kitty Kats were amazing and really wowed the audience. Check out some of the photos from the day on Page 6.

We are also watching in awe as the Palm Lake Care Toowoomba aged caring community emerges from the ground at a lightning pace. We are told construction is ahead of schedule and, with that in mind, we are holding an information session on March 10, with a guest speaker coming from Palm Lake Care’s ‘Care Solutions’ team. Come along with all your questions and curiosity about contemporary aged care, have the fees and charges explained correctly, and even talk with real residents about their experiences. CARE GETS CLOSER ¨̈

Darling Downs Health will redevelop its Baillie Henderson Hospital campus, north of the Toowoomba CBD, to cater for an ever-increasing population across greater Toowoomba. The redeveloped hospital will be at the centre of a masterplanned health and knowledge precinct at the 75-hectare site, which has a history of providing mental health services since the late 1800s.

According to Darling Downs Health, the vision for the redevelopment is for a “strikingly beautiful” campus that includes open, natural tree-lined spaces interconnecting heritage buildings, multi-disciplinary health services, research, education, commercial and community recreation spaces. This site is located adjacent to the new Toowoomba second range crossing.

Toowoomba Hospital has operated at its current site in Pechey Street, Toowoomba, since the late 1800s. The site has been redeveloped many times and its facilities expanded to service the community’s growing health needs. This hospital campus has buildings ranging from heritage-listed through to more recent additions. The 11.3-hectare site has served Toowoomba well, but is now close to full capacity and opportunities to expand services there are limited, hence the focus on the Baillie Henderson Hospital campus.

The Darling Downs Health region is a large and diverse geographic area covering some 90,000 square kilometres. Darling Downs Health provides public hospital and healthcare services to nearly 300,000 people across 29 facilities and plays a local role in learning, research and innovation providing various clinical placements.

Building Queensland is currently developing a detailed business case for the project. The business case will then help the State Government make informed decisions about the project’s final design, staging and funding, details of which will be provided throughout 2020.

With a soaring 5.5-metre ceiling height,

Mick says this reception pavilion will provide a grand and opulent welcome fitting this luxury aged care community.

Each of Palm Lake Care Toowoomba’s high-end neighbourhoods will offer a more intimate residential experience than other standard aged care facilities, with smaller lounge and dining areas in every neighbourhood, and more hot beverage stations than ever before, to support residents and their visiting family and friends. Residents’ suites will each offer its own ensuite bathroom, as well as an integrated wall of cabinetry featuring large-screen TV, fridge, ample storage, a study nook and more. Each room has individual climate control and individual access to the great outdoors.

As per all Palm Lake Care communities, a vast range of interesting excursions and engaging organised activities (with weekly programs individually designed by each local lifestyle team to suit the special needs of their community’s unique population) will keep residents as busy as they want to be.

JOHN AND DOLLY TRETHOWAN WERE JUST LOOKING FOR LIKE-MINDED MUSOS WHEN THEY FORMED PALM LAKE RESORT TOOWOOMBA’S UKULELE GROUP FOUR YEARS AGO. NOW, THE GROUP IS 15 MEMBERS STRONG – AND THEY SHOW NO SIGNS OF STOPPING.

MUSIC TO THEIR EARS ¨̈

From pot pourri to pickleball, many a Palm Lake Resort resident will tell you they threw themselves into activities they had never tried before once they retired. But very few can say they learned a whole new instrument.

“About 98 per cent of our ukulele group had never played before, but they all picked it up very quickly,” says ukulele group leader Dolly Trethowan. “You can play an awful lot of songs on four chords… and we do!”

There are around 15 members in Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba’s ukulele group – many of whom have been there since the start.

“We have had people come and go, and most of our current group is fairly new – but they’re raring to go!” says Dolly. Dolly and husband John lead the group on Thursday afternoons in our resort’s movie theatre. They project the sheet music onto the large screen, which Dolly says helps tremendously.

“There’s no need for individual books, which can get very complicated,” says Dolly. “We all just choose our favourite songs to play and off we go. It’s great fun.”

BEAUT BUSES!

Residents are encouraged to come along and have a go – no ukulele experience necessary. Many players have invested in their very own ukuleles so that they can keep coming back to play every week.

“Everyone in the group loves doing it, and we look forward to it every week,” says Dolly. “We never laugh at each other – only with each other. It’s not a serious group, though sometimes we put on performances at the resort to show off what we have learned.”

Dolly says that, with a bit of practice, the current group hopes to perform for aged care residents in the Toowoomba area. “We have done a few performances in the past and they have all been very well received,” she says.

But for now? Dolly says their only focus is to have fun. For her and John, sharing their love of music with their fellow residents is more than enough.

ART SHOW TO DRAW A CROWD¨̈

Palm Lake Resort Toowoomba is the diamond sponsor of the upcoming Toowoomba Grammar School Art Show, which will feature the work of more than 250 artists from many areas of Australia. Attendees will enjoy an incredible and diverse range at the art show with more than 800 pieces on display (and for sale, priced from $40 to $12,000).

The Grammar Art Show is an annual affair, held every year on the weekend just prior to the Easter school holidays attracting a crowd from right across our region. Each year there is also a featured artist and that person, in 2020, is Jenie Fawckner. Jenie grew up living and working on her parents’ sheep and cattle property in central western Queensland. She studied full time at The Queensland College of Art and graduated in 1990 with a degree in Fine Art (majoring in printmaking and minoring in painting). Jenie has continued her part-time art career while travelling, working, marrying, helping her husband run their cattle property and bringing up four children.

Jenie is now a full-time artist practising from her new studio and home near Hampton, north of Toowoomba.

“Often the landscapes or items I find are pretty ordinary to the eye, but I have learnt to see them in a different way and get super excited about exposing their hidden composition and perspective or colours and shapes,” Jenie says.

Palm Lake Resort Toowomba is excited to be part of this year’s Grammar Art Show ‘Art Trail’ with one of Jenie’s pieces hanging in our Sales Centre for two weeks in the lead up to the event. With its origins in the north of Italy, SMEG appliances are stereotypically Italian – and sit perfectly within any modern Palm Lake Resort home’s kitchen.
