STANTHORPE APPLE AND GRAPE HARVEST FESTIVAL

February 28 until March 8 One of Queensland’s longest running and most successful festivals, this is a “must do” for locals and visitors to the region. A biennial festival, it celebrates the Granite Belt region’s produce and booming wine industry and has a successful track record spanning five decades. The 2020 festival starts on February 28 and culminates on what is known as the ‘big weekend’ (March 6-8), with the Grand Parade and grape-crushing fun. The festival has been entertaining with its harvest celebrations for an incredible 53 years. The iconic grape crush events are a must-see... a lot of messy fun! BOWLS AND BALLS: If you’re new to exercise, get in some light activity with lawn bowls and tenpin bowls for starters. Our resort’s Bowls Club is very active with everything from twilight bowls to social games to serious competition. It’s a great sport for over-50s to play and with the kind of world-class undercover bowls green that our resort offers, as well as the very social nature of our Bowls Club, it’s hard to say no to lawn bowls! If you’re looking for air-conditioned comfort, try tenpin bowling in the Pinnacle Country Club. It’s worth practising so that when your visiting family members drop in (especially the little ones!), you’ve got a great game to be able to play together and even teach them a trick or two!

MILON: Did you know that Palm Lake Resort is Milon’s exclusive partner for over-50s communities in the Southern Hemisphere? This Porsche-inspired electronic gymnasium system offers each resident a personalised Milon membership cards that they simply swipe at each station and the machines automatically reset to that user’s specifications. It takes 17 minutes to complete a round of machines and residents are encouraged to complete three rounds, or workouts, per week. It couldn’t be easier. SWIMMING: Swimming is great for gentle exercise that’s low-stress on your joints and it’s perfect for this summer. Join in our aqua aerobics classes on Mondays at the Pinnacle Country Club (PCC) and Wednesdays at Misty Ridge (MR) or head outside and swim some easy regular laps in our gorgeous infinity pool.

IT’S BEEN A POPULAR FINNISH PASTIME FOR CENTURIES, BUT RECENT STUDIES HAVE REVEALED THAT SPENDING TIME IN A SAUNA DOESN’T JUST FEEL GOOD – IT COULD ALSO BE INCREDIBLY GOOD FOR YOU.

A study published in Mayo Clinic Proceedings has reported that regular sauna bathing can bring about physical benefits similar to those associated with moderate exercise. While this isn’t to say that sauna bathing should completely replace exercise – a combined approach has yielded the best results – there is plenty of evidence to suggest that hitting the sauna a few times a week can offer numerous physical benefits. And here at Palm Lake Resort Cooroy-Noosa, we’ve got you covered!

While there is no active functioning of the skeletal muscles during sauna bathing, the heat and increase in heartrate – typically from baseline up to 120 to 150 BPM – is said to increase muscle blood flow, aiding in better joint health and systemic blood pressure.

Sauna bathing has been found to benefit cardiovascular function, with two reports investigating the effects of regular sauna bathing on the long-term risk of cardiovascular disease. One found an increase in sauna bathing habits to be associated with reduced risk of sudden cardiac death, while the other found that sauna bathing four to seven times a week reduced the risk of stroke by 62 per cent in comparison to sauna bathing just once a week.

These recent findings indicate that high corticotropin-releasing factor (CRF) levels – which can typically be

improved with regular physical activity – and frequent sauna sessions can substantially reduce the risk of adverse cardiovascular outcomes. Sauna bathing has also been linked to an improvement in pain and symptoms associated with osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis and other musculoskeletal disorders, and can improve headache disorders.

So, there you have it – frequent visits to your resort sauna could do your physical health a world of good. Keep in mind, however, that high temperatures in

saunas could be potentially harmful for those with symptomatic and unstable disease conditions, or when combined with alcohol consumption. It’s important to consult with your doctor before adding more sauna visits into your weekly routine.

Opened in 1989 by Mr Toshiharu Araki, a representative of the Brisbane Consul-General of Japan, Ju Raku En sprawls across four hectares. The site is jointly owned by the University of Southern Queensland Toowoomba and the Toowoomba Regional Council, and is one of the largest and most traditionally-designed Japanese stroll gardens in the country. Its name means ‘to enjoy peace and longevity in a public place’.

Though relatively young – the garden will take many years to be considered complete – Ju Raku En boasts a central lake, three kilometres of paths, 230 species of Japanese and Australian native trees and plants and wet and dry gardens.

The master plan and design for the garden, community building and tea house were prepared in Japan, following intensive site analysis and background studies by the Nakane Garden Research. The planning phase took three years, with construction finally commencing in 1983.

Each large rock was purposefully and artfully placed by designer Professor Kinsaku Nakane of Kyoto, so as to appear naturally dispersed in a random way. The park itself is a presentation of Buddhist paradise; the lake representing the ‘celestial sea’, which laps at the rocky shores of the three islands immortals are said to dwell. At the outer edge of the lake, the material world – visitors

can cross one of the four bridges to the islands to take a symbolic journey to paradise.

One visit to Ju Raku En is never enough – the Japanese maples colour the park in autumnal tones, while in spring the masses of lilac blossoms hang from the Wisteria Pergola, a popular wedding destination. Visitors are encouraged to relax near the Dry Garden, photograph or paint the scenery and spot the many bird species, from swans and ducks to geese and smaller native birds.

Today, it is one of Toowoomba’s most beautiful and tranquil parks. Enjoy it free from 6am until dusk, every day.
