Meanwhile In Australia…by Michael Maginn — September 11, 2017

We Have Hurricanes And Wildfires. Oz Has Big Snow.Sound Like A Theme? The news from Down Under is that the snows are prodigious, the depths of which haven’t been seen in 17 years. The snow-pack in Australian snow fields is up to 97 inches, eight feet, which sounds awfully similar to the monster snow this year inthe North American west.

So while we contemplate extraordinary weather conditions fromwild hurricanes and fires, it appears Oz and NZ are also havingextraordinary weather.

SAN DIEGO ALPINE LEAGUE RACING REPORT by Eileen Weiner

REMEMBERING DAN by Karl CiksteDan Kuczon and I were room mates onnumerous ski trips. Dan was known for hisnotorious snoring but it never bothered me.I would just remove my hearing aid andthen sleep like a baby. We were the mostcompatible of room mates! I learned a lotfrom Dan in numerous discussions involv-ing (among other things) home mainte-

nance, auto repair, insurance, health....He was knowledgeable in allthis stuff and loved to talk about it.

Dan was a gadget guy. He would bring an alarm clock which wouldproject the time onto ceiling of our room. This didn’t help me since Isleep with my glasses off. On the slopes he had a wrist watch whichkept track of the number of runs and the accumulated vertical feetskied. He was big on ski safety. His ski outfits could be seen a mileaway, especially the “bumble bee yellow” one. He devised his ownsafety items (see the pics below), a blinking red light on the back ofhis helmet and a side view mirror attached to his wrist. Ironically hewas still hit by a snowboarder.

It was privilege to have known Dan and I’ll still be looking for a“bumble bee” outfit on the slopes.

Labor Day BBQHere are some pics from the 3rd annual Labor Day BBQ at Edand Ellen’s house in Oceanside. This party has traditionally beenheld to again celebrate Dan Henry’s successful circumnaviga-tion (i.e. swim around) of the Oceanside Pier in the 88th annualLabor Day event. This year Dan was joined by Roy Tobin sonow we have two super athletes who will translate their swim-ming expertise into skiing prowess on the slopes this coming skiseason.

Over 40 people attended the BBQ which featured an impromptuHawaiian theme. The food was excellent and included pork sau-sages filled with pineapple chunks brought by Shannon Miller, afavorite introduced last year.

HIKING/FITNESS

This month we’ll talk about motiva-tion to exercise.

We all know how important it is to stayphysically active for life, but also howhard it is to stay motivated. Try these 7ways:1. Pick an exercise (or two) you love, or

at least like.2. Do it every day.3. Start with half an hour and stay at that level, or increase to one

hour.4. Pick a time when you don’t get interrupted (early morning).5. Exercise always at the same time, or assign a time for exercise

each day.6. Exercise with a friend.7. Reward yourself after exercising (not with food).

And if you absolutely hate to exercise, here is the silver lining:Your chance of injuring yourself is tiny, when you sit on thecouch and watch TV.

Please look for details for our Thursday Hikes in your email boxand the Don Diego Meetup atwww.meetup.com/san-diego-skiers

Fitness Focus: Plank, Plank, Plankby Michael Maginn

This Pose Is Considered The Simplest, Most Effective CoreStrengthener. “Plank, plank, plank,” says Jan, the exercise in-structor at the head of our class. After an hour of kick boxing,we start the floor exercises to end the session. We get into plankposition as she intones, “Plank, plank, plank”. The seconds rollby.

High plank or Phalakasana pose. The most glorious ofsimple exercises, bodyweight held in place bycore strength. Arms, wrists, shoulders, lower back, abs, gluts, all working to hold theposition.

The proper plank position can be found by putting your handsunder your shoulders, extending up to a full, high plank on yourtoes, body a straight line from heels to back of head, eyesfocused about a foot ahead of you, chin tucked. Basically, it’slike the top of a push-up, making sure your body is straight andnot sagging or arched. While you’re up there, you can flex yourfeet, bend one knee in, then the other. Put one foot’s toes on theheel of the other foot, then switch. If you hold yourself still, youcan feel your muscles adjusting and keeping you balanced. High

plank can be modified by resting on your knees versus your toes. That might be a good place to start if you haven’t done core exer-cises in a while.

If your wrists are sensitive, you can support yourself on a pair ofdumb bells or yoga blocks. If you have hand or wrist issues, likecarpal tunnel or rotator cuff, you’ll have to get some advice froma physical therapist or yoga instructor to help mitigate those con-ditions. You can also move from high plank to low plank, mov-ing down to resting on your forearms, arms extending in front ofyou, one arm at a time. Then, back to high plank. And thendown to low plank. Do this slowly while mindfully keeping yourbody in a straight line position. Man, that’s a work out.

The benefits are impressive; you get toned up in the middle, andyou will find yourself using those newly strengthened core mus-cles to support your back when lifting, twisting, even walking. We’ve found that lower back problems can be addressed with astrong core. Your posture will improve, too. Your mileage mayvary, but plank and other exercises focused on the core can defi-nitely help that lower back. The experts say you should shoot for30 seconds as a beginner to get into this. Eventually, if you canhold plank for two minutes, you’re doing very well.

Jen Reviews sums up the major benefit of planking: Planks are avery versatile exercise that target a lot of the most importantmuscle groups in the body. The core muscle groups are responsi-ble in some way for helping us carry ourselves through almostevery action we’ll perform in a day, so making sure your corestrength is in check is absolutely vital for someone who wants toleave a healthy lifestyle. Plank pose is also one of the SunriseSalutation series of connected poses that cycles through all yourmuscles, flexing, and strengthening all of you.
