Climate Change Is Killing Alpine Skiing As We Know It:

Global warming is leaving its mark across the globe, especiallyat resorts at relatively low altitudes. In Garmish, and across theAlps, resort towns depend upon the tourism to help their econo-my, but with the little snow that those areas are seeing, thesetowns could soon be in serious trouble! Climate change is ex-pected to cost Austrian tourism 300 million euros a year. InFrance, authorities in Tignes delayed the start of the ski seasonby several weeks, citing the effects of global warming on theGrande Motte glacier. If greenhouse-gas emissions continue atthe same level, snow will almost disappear at lower levels by theend of the century.

Juergen Hilla, a school teacher from nearby Frankfurt, predictedthat skiing and other winter sports may not be viable inGarmisch in the longer term and that he and his family may haveto consider alternatives for their ski vacation. “Probably in 20 or30 years, it won’t have the same role as it does now,” he added

after a day on the slopes. “The higher runs were in good shapebut the lower ones needed cannons spraying artificial snow tokeep them passable”, Hilla said.

To make up for a lack of natural snowfall, resorts switch on thecannons, although they’re energy intensive and unpopular withenvironmentalists. Producing artificial snow will get harder astemperatures rise. Higher areas will survive, but they will haveto invest more in snowmaking and to cope with the additionaltourist inflow. Areas most affected by warming are on the out-skirts of the Alps—in Austria’s east, the foothills in France andItaly and in Germany. They were never as dependent on ski tour-ism as some regions in the central Alps, and are more attuned towelcoming guests around the year. At Garmisch City Hall,Mayor Sigrid Meierhofer is putting on a brave face, citing thetown’s brisk conference business. “Of course, we have to comeup with concepts to maintain the winter tourism that we stillhave,” she said. “You say it’s brown—I say the hiking paths areopen.”

Some Ski Industry News (reprinted from the FAR WEST NEWS FLASH)

Mammoth Midweek #2:A great group of mostly downhill skiers, witha record number of snowboarders, and a halfdozen multi-tasking cross country skiers/snowshoers/hikers joined together for theFebruary Don Diego Mammoth #2 trip. There was a super mix of people among the44 on the trip which included 5 new memberswho were welcomed by the many returning

members. Everyone chatted and skied, boarded or hiked enthu-siastically with old friends and new.

The week started chilly and breezy but the weather improveddaily. Thursday and Friday were spectacular days on the hill, with sunny skies, warm temps, great views and thanks to greatgrooming by Mammoth Mtn, super slopes to ski and board on.We took great advantage of it! Even the hikers took the gondolato the top to enjoy the great view. The REVolution Tour madethe ride up chairs 1& 6 pretty amazingas we watched the13-19 year old ski-ers and boarderscompete on the halfpipe and the big airjumps.

The Best Westerntook great care ofus each morningwith their breakfast

buffet and made to order eggs and pancakes. One night theyhosted a wine and cheese party for us. The jacuzzi was hot andmany of us took advantage of it. Monday we had a deliciouscatered dinner of smoked meats, cheeesy potatoes, salads anddesserts, followed by an entertaining couple of games of LCR (afast paced entertaining and easy dice game). Thursday we hadpizza, salad and great conversation. Friday we tried a new sand-wich place for pitas (or salads) on the way home.

We were fortunate to have Daniel as our driver and he made thevery windy drive up extraordinarily smooth as he navigated thetricky winds with seeming ease. Always willing to help whenev-er he is available to join us he is a welcome addition to our trips.

In February a great time was had by all! Keep doing your snowdances! We are looking forward to repeating the great fun inMarch, under Keith's capable leadership.

Ellie Oppenheim, trip leader

Mammoth Midweek #3:By the time you read this we’ll likelyalready be skiing at Mammoth enjoyingthis 3rd midweek ski trip. The skiingconditions look to be a repeat of the excel-lent January and February experiences. We have almost 30 participants ready tohit the slopes.

The Council’s annual Aspen ski trip last De-cember was another great success with 60local skiers attending. The skiing was greatwith plenty of snow and the other plannedactivities were a lot of fun as usual. Therewas an event every evening starting with awelcome party at the Gant, a couple of pubcrawls to different establishments aroundAspen and of course,”Lots of Shopping.”

The Far West Ski Week trip to Big Sky Montana was also a greatsuccess with plenty of powder and bluebird days in the high 20’sto low 30’s. The San Diego council night was a buffet and thepizza night went off without a hitch. The trip home was a bit ex-citing because the flight out of Bozeman was an hour late. With agroup that size they would have held the connecting flight, buteveryone got on their cell phone and changed their flights so fromBozeman to San Diego was a free for all.

The Council received a bit of bad news. Eileen Sanford who hasbeen putting together all of the wonderful overseas trips for thepast six years had to resign. The Council is looking for people totakeover running the trips that are already planned. Alan Godwinthe travel director for US trips will help out, but they are stilllooking for additional people. Eileen will be sorely missed.

HIKING/FITNESS

HIKING:In February we hiked at the Torrey PinesExtension (wild and beautiful), only two ofus, since the rest went skiing. Next wasLake Poway (one of our favorites) and theTunnel 4 hike at Del Mar Mesa, a beautifulone mile long tunnel of tall chaparral, plusa Cardiac Hill. Our last February hike is theEllie Lane Loop, next to Iron Mountain, anew hike for us!

For March we'll do some familiar hikes, like PenasquitosCanyon, Lake Hodges, San Clemente Canyon and maybe someEast County hikes (Fallbrook and Santa Ysabel).

FITNESS:Walking may be one of the most powerful “medicines” availa-ble. It can help lower your risk of heart disease, cancer, anddiabetes, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, and evenkeep your memory sharp.

The simple activity of walking has so many powerful healthbenefits, the experts at Harvard Medical School created'Walking for Health'. This special report takes you step-by-step from why walking may be the most perfect exercise, tohow to get started on a walking program, to specific walkingworkouts. Harvard Medical School has created a number ofHealth Reports about different Health issues in depth, each ofthem you can order online or in print for about $20.

Please look for details for our Thursday hikes in your email boxand the Don Diego Meetup at www.meetup.com/san-diego-skiers

You can contact me directly [email protected] or on my mobile phone, 858-342-00338.
