Mammoth Midweek #2:On January 20, 2019, I submitted the roominglist to the hotel. So far, there are 22 partici-pants needing 12 rooms. The hotel will spon-sor the Wine & Cheese Party if we we occupyat least 13 rooms. I am optimistic that addi-tional club members will sign up so that wewill take additional rooms provided the hotelhas vacancies. We will have the traditional

catered dinner on Monday night and a pizza party on Wednes-day night, both in the meeting room. If we have the Wine &Cheese party it will be on Thursday night in the restaurant.

I would like to say “come join us” but when you read this it willlikely be too late. Weather forecast at the mountain for Sunday,2/3/19 (Superbowl Sunday): Snow showers, 34/16F, little wind. Will change …

TRAVEL/TRIP REPORTS

Mammoth Midweek #1 Trip Report by Karl Cikste

The January Mammoth Midweek trip was another resoundingsuccess. Trip leader Carolyn did another superb job organizingeverything. The catered dinner, the wine and cheese party and thepizza party each hadmore than forty par-ticipants. But theweather was notunder her controland although itsnowed and blowedfor a couple of dayswe still enjoyedgood skiing, espe-cially on Thursdayand Friday.

The mountain accumulated over 4 feet of snow during this week.On Monday the visibility was very poor and only Chair 6 wasrunning at the Main Lodge. As I left the locker area to head out-side I was asked if I had a cell phone. “Why?” I asked. “ So youcan call back and let the rest of us know what it’s like out on theslopes” was the reply. I had limited success out there. Broad-way proved to be my nemesis where I had four “sitdown” falls.Poor visibility, snow accumulation on the outside of my goggles, and deep, heavy Sierra cement all contributed to my misery. Ifelt like a beginner. The lesson I learned was that it’s a lot easier

to get back up if you take off your skis than to use your poles totry standing up. Also if the weather is bad at the Main Lodge, take the shuttle back to the village and get on the gondola to Can-yon Lodge where the slopes are more protected from the ele-ments. Those who did that told me they had a wonderful time.

The weather improved on a daily basis each following day.Thursday was a bluebird day and Friday was a close second. Iwas able to take some good scenic and action shots. The skiingwas excellent coming down the backside of Chair 3 and on thecruiser run on Bridges to the Eagle chair. But the groomingseemed to be cut back at least during the first part of the week. The face of Chair 3 remained ungroomed for several days. Costcutting at Mammoth? More snow is expected at Mammoth sothe February and March trips should be excellent.

Thank you for planning and orchestrating the first Mammothtrip of the year. It was very well done. (I say this having a lot ofpersonal experience planning and executing large group trips. So, I know it isn’t easy.)

There was good communication in advance and during the trip.Everything was well organized. And on time. You, and in facteveryone, were very welcoming to me as a new member. I par-ticularly appreciated the morning meet up as a chance to groupup with other skiers and as a result I had the chance to enjoymeeting and skiing with quite a few of the folks. All of the

planned evening activities made it easy to meet people. I foundit was a very nice group of people. And generally quite goodskiers too.

In sum, the trip (and the Club) exceeded my expectations. I ap-preciate all of your efforts putting this trip together. Based onthis good experience with the Club I will be participating inmore of the Don Diego Mammoth trips. Thank you!

Best,Ellie Oppenheim

12 Tips And Tricks For Skiing And SnowSports

(Downloaded from www.seniorsskiing.com/) by Don Burch

Clever Hacks For A Better Winter Experience.

1. When skiing wet and slushy snow, spray the top of your skisand even your ski boots with silicone (wipe it off afterspraying). The faster heavy snow slides off skis, the easierit’ll be to make turns.

2. Toe warmers work better in gloves than hand warmers. Usethe sticky back on toe warmers and attach them to the back-hand side of your gloves. If you’ve used hand warmers, youknow they have a tendency to fall out when you take yourgloves off.

3. When skiing groomers, especially hardpack, wider skis putmore stress on knees because they require more angulationto get them on edge.

4. Skis with softer tips puts less stress on skiers’ knees.

5. When purchasing used skis, make sure the bindings aren’tso old that ski shops won’t service them. A Google searchwith the words “Binding Indemnification List” will provideyou with an up-to-date list of acceptable bindings. Betteryet, ask your local ski shop if they’ll service them.

6. Don’t use lens wipes on the inside of your goggles. Most

goggles have anti-fog on the inside and wiping it may causedamage.

7. On crowded days, the single line will almost always be fast-er even when skiing in groups. Lifts that don’t start at themain lodge are also good bets on crowded days.

8. Always stop on the side of trails where you can be seen byuphill skiers. Look up hill before starting. Wear a helmetand make sure it is strapped.

9. Thoroughly dry your boots each day after skiing especiallyif skiing back-to-back days. If your boots are the least bitdamp, your feet will be cold. I use a dedicated boot dryer.

10. If you want to demo skis, do it at a mountain where you cantry several during the day. On less crowded days, you’ll geta much better selection and won’t have to wait for the modelor size you want to try. Select a day that will have variedconditions on the mountain; this way you can try the skis onboth hard pack and softer snow. Within a specified timeperiod, many shops will apply the cost of the demo to a pairof new skis; ask about their policy.

11. If you plan on sharing skis, consider getting demo bindings. These bindings can be adjusted to fit about any size ski bootwithout needing to remount the binding.

12. In a pinch, you can use a plastic card from your wallet toclear sleet from goggles.

DDSC Officers and Directors

We had our race on January 12, 2019 on avery overcast and cold morning. Becausewe did not have enough racers to have a fullday on the hill, we improvised and shortenedour race to a half-day event.

Each racer had the opportunity to run fourlaps down Fascination. There were two GSruns and two SL runs. We only able to put

45 racers on the hill, therefore we did not meet our minimumnumber of racers to be able to have a full days use of the racehill.

Our two club racers, Martin Wascher and Dave Arnold wonmedals. Dave will be well remembered for his “tumble” startout of the gate. San Diego Alpine League won the most pointsthat go toward the end-of-the-year trophy. The Alpine Leaguecurrently has 47 members.

HIKING/FITNESS

I still believe the best way to get fit is bywalking and especially hiking in ourbeautiful nature, but it is not for every-one, so here is another alternative.

You might try out an app helping you getfit, here are two that are highly recom-mended:

SweatWorking app, which is rankedNo. 1 in fitness coaching apps in the iTunes store—gives youaccess to thousands of audio and video recordings from top-trainers in fitness styles including high-intensity training, strength, barre, restorative yoga, and meditation. The app alsojust launched “Gym Channels,” where studios worldwide canopt to upload recorded workouts from their gym for you. (Free;iOS)

Nike Training Club app comes with all the things you’d ex-pect from a top-notch fitness app: workouts designed by pro-fessional trainers and athletes, customizable fitness programs, sharing capabilities to compare your progress with others, anda totally sleek interface. And in Nike fashion, it just does itbetter than the competition. (Free; iOS and Android)
