Welcome to Verge 2010! We are so excited to be able to serve you over the next few days. We hope that this event is a pivotal time for you, the leadership that God has entrusted to you, and the communities you work in and love. It is such an exciting time to be involved in the mission of God, and we hope that this Conference inspires, encourages and resources you to continue pursuing God’s mission in community. The focus and theme of this first conference takes its inspiration from the gospel movements that were seen in not only the 1st Century, but also modern-day China, India and other places in the world today, where thousands of churches are being planted daily, and millions being transformed by the gospel in sometimes less than a decade. With Christianity in decline in the West (including the U.S.), it is time that we begin recovering some of the DNA of these movements, and applying them within our own lives and communities. So the theme of Verge 2010 is The DNA of Gospel Movements, and each Main Session focuses on one particular element, or ingredient, of a movement of the gospel. Leading thinkers and practitioners will be your guide as we begin to uncover the ways in which we can personally, locally and globally engage and re-engage in the mission of God. With almost 40 workshops to choose from, we hope that there will be plenty of opportunities to be renewed in your community’s journey to see the spark of the gospel transform, renew, and multiply. And in all of this we pray that Jesus would be our goal, our hope, our strength, our model, our value, our significance, our worth and our passion. With you for the gospel,

Michael ‘Stew’ Stewart Verge Conference Founder & Director

We are glad to be able to host the first annual Verge Conference, and we’re glad you’re here this week! We are excited that you are joining us in this adventure, and look forward to the next few days that we will spend being challenged, encouraged, inspired and equipped together. We really believe that this conversation about missional communities is the future of the church. And it is our heart to raise up missional communities that will engage and minister to the city around them.

We have asked some amazing speakers and trainers to come to Austin and share with all of us their insight and wisdom. Our hope is that you would leave the conference with a heart to begin spreading the gospel through missional community wherever the Lord has called you. We are thankful that you are here, and appreciative that this conference is a priority for you and your development.

For His Glory,

Matt CarterLead Pastor, Austin Stone Community Church

Church 3.0Neil ColeRoom: Worship Center

In this breakout, Neil will share an insider’s perspective of a movement and you will hear some of the significant lessons learned about shifts churches must make in order to release multiplication movements. We will examine a variety of models of organic churches from very centralized to decentralized and also see how one sized-group never fits all needs for the church but how we need to have a variety of sizes for different ministry purposes. Neil will also address questions such as how do we keep heresy out of the movement? How do we care for kids? What about finances in organic churches?

Developing Leaders & PioneersJon FergusonRoom: 4.124 Capacity: 60

What kind of practices, systems, habits and values do you need in order to create an environment where leaders are made and reproduced and where pioneers are made, reproduced and unleashed? Jon plays a lead role in identifying and developing leaders, coaches and staff at Community Christian Church, a multi site church of over 5000 people in 9 locations across Chicagoland.

Gospel Centered Missional Community: 1 of 2Jeff V. and Caesar K.Room: 4.110 Capacity: 120

This is a 2 part series. We encourage you to attend both labs.

Kingdom and ConversionHugh HalterRoom: 3.310/3.312/3.314 Capacity:100

In all the discussion about kingdom and missional, we hear a lot about serving, social justice, blessing, benevolence, etc. But where is the question, concept, and concern for the conversion of someone’s heart to Jesus. The kingdom is all these things and more but one thing is central to the missional search and that is the literal spiritual conversion of someone’s heart. In this discussion, Hugh, who has spent most of his life with non-believers will help us find the secrets of kingdom conversion, evangelism in this new world, and your friends in particular.

The Monkey & the FishDave GibbonsRoom: 3.308 Capacity: 60

What does it mean if the next five years continue to be financially turbulent? Is your model still going to work? Dave presents a compelling discussion on navigating this new world with potency and practical wisdom that can change the way you do church in the 21st century.

Creating Networks that Develop entrepreneursKevin PeckRoom: 3.306 Capacity: 60

As the world continues to change, the need for creativity, innovation and entrepreneurship has never been greater in the Kingdom. Our leadership and our leadership structures have the capacity to energize or stifle this creative activity. Building networks that foster entrepreneurship stay consistent with vision, and build synergy, all without taxing leaders, is a critical tool to unlocking the potential of God’s innovative leaders. What if networks could be built that capitalize on new information, new leadership, new technology and new visions while not tying up critical resources? The Austin Stone hasn’t cornered the market on this, but we are excited about sharing the story (and our notes)!

Gospel Centered Missional Community: 2 of 2Jeff V. & Caesar K.Room 4.110 Capacity: 120

Today, a new generation of church leaders is emerging to show the way. These innovators understand that in changing times the church must reach out with greater creativity, clarity and cultural relevance than ever before. The Church needs a new voice to effectively engage our society with the timeless truth of Christ.

Leadership Network authors are helping to create that new voice.

Q&A: The DNA of Gospel MovementsAlan HirschRoom: Gym

Was there something in the main session that struck you that you would like to learn more about? This will focus on the questions you may have about the DNA of gospel movements.

For the City: Theology, Principles & Practices of Mercy MinistriesKevin Peck & Justin LopezRoom: 3.310 Capacity: 30

In order to reach and meet the needs of the city it is vital that we, as the Church, collaborate with the community and other organizations. The Church should take on the critical role of being the centerpiece of such collaboration. This session will address what this looks like and how to make it a reality in your church and community.

How to do Mission in the BurbsHugh HalterRoom: Worship Center

When you hear the word “kingdom” everyone jumps to social action, holistic gospel, or benevolent works. Whereas all these are critical, The Kingdom is also about transformation, new life, and conversion. In this session Hugh will address the big question, “How do people come to Christ” in the new missional church.

How someone like you can start a movementGeorge PattersonRoom: 2.120 Capacity: 70

In this workshop you will discover and practice the simple steps to starting a movement of missional communities. This is for any person who has a desire to make and multiply disciples that reproduce.

How the story of God shapes gospel-centered missional communitiesCaesar KalinowskiRoom: 4.114 Capacity: 120

Is the Church speaking the language of the culture we find ourselves in? God’s story, and his interaction with man, was originally given as an oral document – a story. God has given us a way, for all generations, to communicate his great gospel – through story. In this breakout we will look at the missional imperative of speaking the language of the culture and how this is being done through the use of biblical narrative to create, encourage and equip gospel communities on mission.

Movement Practicals (CPM Training): 3 of 3David WatsonRoom: 4.120 Capacity: 75

In this break out you will learn practical steps to starting and sustaining a gospel movement in your context. This is a 3 part series. We encourage you to attend all three labs.

Now What? Taking Ideas to ImplementationCharles LeeRoom: 3.308 Capacity: 60

Ideas are a dime a dozen. The real worth, life, and impact of an idea is found in its implementation. This workshop will facilitate a conversation about ideation including insights into healthy postures, proven principles, and best practices.

Orphan CareJason KovacsRoom: 2.308 Capacity: 70

Gospel movements are about the heart of God to see His name made famous, which includes care for the alien, orphan and widow. In this session, Jason Kovacs, director of ministry development for ABBA Fund, will explore more deeply how you can engage the global orphan care crisis, and how movements of the gospel are essential to justice for the orphan.
