The people of Horsham enjoyed the last throws of the balmy In-dian summer on Saturday, No-vember 1, to attend one of the largest Fireworks and Bonfi re Night events in North Sussex at Horsham Rugby Club which has now been running for over 30 years.

To add an extra sparkle to the evening Rebecca Craven and Max Bowden were in attendance from the hit BBC show Waterloo Road to judge the “make a guy” com-petition and provide some glitter to the occasion.

To ensure that they arrived in style the stars were chauff eur driven by event sponsors, Vines of Gatwick, from their London homes, and from the photo-graphs they were clearly a hit with their fans.

Attendees enjoyed children’s entertainment, outside bars, food and music from Saviours of Soul in the clubhouse afterwards.

Richard Ordidge, Horsham Rugby Club’s Commercial Man-ager and Fireworks Event Or-ganisor commented afterwards: “With the weather gods on our side we had a fabulous turnout, with an estimated crowd of over 3,000 for our annual Fireworks and Bonfi re Night at Coolhurst on Saturday. The fi reworks were even better than last year so

well done to Aurora Fireworks for putting on such a wonderful display. Hopefully everyone had a night to remember.

“We must also thank our neighbours for being so toler-ant of the noise and heavy traffi c and for the various local com-panies who supported us for the event. These include Hepworths Brewery, Henry Adams, The Candy Box, The Black Jug, Capi-tol Theatre, Foundry Press, BEL Signs, Co-Ordination Catering, St John’s Church and Vines of Gatwick.”

Police are investigating a woman who was raped in Horsham Park on Tues-day, October 28 at around 11am.

The victim, a 40-year-old woman from Horsham, reported it on Mon-day (November 3). She had been in town when she met a man she knows and went to Horsham Park with him. He then forced her to have sex near to the North Parade end of the park.

DS Laura Diamond said: “The victim describes the man as white, between 40 and 50-year-old with grey hair and stubble. He is medi-

um build, about 5’ 6” and wearing a green coat.

“We are appealing to anyone who might have seen a woman in the area last Tuesday looking dis-tressed. This is not random but the victim is extremely distressed by what has happened and we are giv-ing her specialist support.

“Anyone who has any informa-tion or saw something which could help us with our investigation, please contact us on 101 or email [email protected] quot-ing serial 1326 of 3/11. Alternatively contact the independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.”

Birth is one of the most stressful events our bodies will encounter. The compressive forces can contribute to musculoskeletal complaints in babies bodies, and can commonly cause signs of irritability. These include -

• Inconsolable crying

• Signs of colic

• Sleep Disturbances

• Problems feeding

• Problems with winding, burping or bowel movements

• Sinusitis and ear nose and throat disorders

Cranial osteopaths are trained to feel for subtle changes of rhythms in the cranium, spinal column and nervous system. Tensions and torsions are then released with specific subtle techniques, which

encourages the body to be balanced and less irritable.

Osteopathy (meaning study of the bones) is a treatment technique designed to give relief for problems caused by

the bodies structural or mechani-cal system.

It allows the body to re-establish function and heal itself.

Suzanna Frisby, told The District Post: “My original passion for os-teopathy came from an interest in sports, nutrition and exercise. Os-teopathy brought all of those to-gether and what came from that is being able to treat a various amount of conditions.

“The work is so varied and I see people with all diff erent types of complaints. Every day at work is diff erent, providing diff er-ent challenges and we’re always learning.”

When you’re pregnant or have just had a baby, you’re body can fi nd it hard to adapt to all the change. Birth is one of the most stressful events your body will encounter. The compressive forces can con-tribute to musculoskeletal com-plaints in a babies body.

Symptoms can include incon-solable crying, signs of colic, sleep disturbances, problems feeding, problems with winding, burping or

bowel movements, sinusitis and ear nose and throat disorders.

Osteopathy Works regularly as-sist with these complaints and off er paediatric treatments for £35.

Suzanna Frisby said: “I qualifi ed in 1999 from the BCOM (British col-lege of osteopathic medicine) with a BSc (Hons) ost med, a diploma in osteopathy and a diploma in natur-opathy.

“I previously worked as a sports massage therapist and had a keen interest in sports injuries, com-bining diet with exercise advice to speed recovery.

“I completed a masters (MSc) degree in paediatric osteopathy in 2006 at the Osteopathic Centre for Children and lectured in both gen-eral and paediatric osteopathy at the ESO, BSO and OCC.

(European School of Osteopathy, British School of Osteopathy and the Osteopathic Centre for Chil-dren.)

“I now combine a busy home life with three young children with my passion for osteopathy.”

Four Horsham children are to make their TV debut when their TalkTalk ‘Mix Off ’ video will be featured in The X Factor ad break.

Maisie, 8, twins Emily and Wil-liam, 6, and Sophia Keeling, 3, from Horsham, will be seen by millions of TV viewers on Satur-day, November 8, during The X Factor ad breaks. The siblings will be performing Story of my Life by One Direction on TalkTalk’s sponsorship bumper after making their ‘Mix Off ’ music video.

TalkTalk TV, sponsors of The X Factor, created the ‘Mix Off ’ app to give viewers of the show the chance to star on TV in their own unique music video, taking inspi-ration from some of the nation’s favourite pop stars.

Chart-topping girl band, Little Mix, recently showed fans of The X Factor how to get the best out of the app.

Fans of The X Factor can recre-ate their favourite boy band dance routine or channel their inner diva in front of the wind machine, and the best Mix Off music videos will be selected to appear in Talk-Talk TV’s X Factor ad breaks and also feature on TalkTalk’s new TV player.

Maisie, Emily, William and So-phia’s mum said: “We are all so excited that the kids get to be on TV; we were screaming and jump-ing around the house and I don’t think they will sleep for weeks! We all love the X Factor and thought it would be fun to make a TalkTalk X Factor mix! We can’t

stop watching our video and will defi nitely be tuning in on Satur-day with all our friends and family to have an X Factor party!”

The app has a variety of fi lters and graphic eff ects to give each Mix Off video a unique look and feel. Music includes tracks cover-ing a wide range of genres from pop classics, to power ballads, so there’s something for everyone.

TalkTalk’s sponsorship of The X Factor Live Final gives its 4 mil-lion homes the chance to win thousands of money-can’t-buy tickets and exclusive access to see their favourite contestants per-form at the show’s spectacular fi nal showdown.

The TalkTalk Mix Off app is available to download via the Ap-ple App Store, or Google play.

Poppy collectors will be at Sains-bury’s Horsham until November 8, raising funds for The Royal British Legion, the UK’s leading armed forces charity. This year marks the Centenary of the First World War and Sainsbury’s 20th year of sup-port for The Royal British Legion.

There will be poppy inspired products on sale in-store, with all profits going to The Royal British Legion. The range will include two jute bags designed by British fash-ion designer, Amanda Wakeley, sold exclusively at Sainsbury’s. Custom-ers will also be able to ‘roundup’ their bill at checkouts to the nearest pound and donate the difference to The Royal British Legion.

Last year customers and col-leagues helped raise £4.5 million for The Royal British Legion and this year they hope to raise even more.

Sainsbury’s Horsham Store Man-ager Derek Boarer added: “The Horsham community has been so supportive in past. This year we commemorate the start of the First World War and our 20th year of partnership with The Royal British Legion. I’d like to thank our cus-tomers for their kind donations so far and we look forward to all the activity we have planned to support this fantastic cause.”

After Armistice Day, custom-ers can also choose to recycle their poppies in-store. A recycling col-lection point will be available at the Horsham Store Customer Service Desk from the 12th to 24th Novem-ber. All collected poppies will go back to The Royal British Legion to either help make new poppies or to generate more funds.

Horsham Rotary reprised the Chil-dren In Need shows at Gatwick Airport last Friday, October 31, and Saturday, November 1, and also invited many mascots to join the fun, including Horsham’s Ringo the Dragon and Howie the Hornet.

Gatwick laid on a Teddy Bears Tea Party and invited the children from Chestnut Tree Hospice and there was performance from children’s entertainer Dave benson Phillips.

Passengers were also stunned to encounter a flash mob in the air-port with dancers from Horsham Salsa wowing the crowds with an impromptu dance display before melting back into the crowd. The dancers performed a Cuban style of salsa known as ‘Rueda de Casino’ – the Casino Wheel.

The event was organised by The Rotary Club of Horsham and sup-ported by 27 different Rotary Clubs throughout Sussex and Surrey.

President Dave Smith said: “The whole event has been a great suc-cess. Although the event was or-ganised and run by The Rotary Club of Horsham it was supported by many other clubs from our Ro-

tary District. Gatwick Airport have been superb throughout and laid on a wonderful picnic in the North Terminal attended by children from Chestnut Tree House and their families. We have hopefully made many people aware of what Rotary is all about while raising some sig-nificant funds for the great annual BBC’s Children in Need appeal”.

The BBC filmed at Gatwickand it will be brodcast on the Children in Need show on Saturday, November 15.

You can still donate to Horsham’s Children in Need Fund and have your donation doubled by Santander Bank by making an online donation at Just Giving page ‘HRC Children in Need in Horsham 2014’, and if any local business would like a collec-tion tin they just need to email the Rotary Club at [email protected].

Please keep giving and make this a record year from Horsham to Children In Need which helps lo-cal Charities such as Springboard whose CEO Nigel Scott-Dickeson also asks you to ‘please give gener-ously’.

Horsham Cricket and Sports Club have been reviewing their fi re-works night at the cricket club and are delighted with the positive feedback received.

The club got behind the event – helping to set it up, providing sev-enty stewards on the night with ex-tra staff on duty and others coming back next day to clear the ground.

Talking exclusively to the District Post the event organiser, club com-mittee man Mike Manktelow said: “There was a queue outside at 5.15

and people were greeted by a fair ground organ that came all the way from Jersey – so our fame is spread-ing! We sold out of tickets and had to close the gates with about 6,000 in the ground. The good weath-er really made it and the fi reworks were even more spectacular this year with the crowd staying on. It was great to see children and their families enjoy-ing our fairground laid on by Harris of Ashington, the fi rst time in a hundred years that they’ve been in busi-ness in Horsham. The food stalls went really well – they were a sell out, too. And, the post fi reworks disco proved very popular, so all in

all we’re delighted and have ear-marked the funds raised to under-take some essential refurbishment work at the club.”

Next year’s event – on October 31, is already being mapped out,

with a seriously memorable Halloween theme in pros-pect, Mike Manktelow adding: “We’ve set the bar quite high this year but have got plenty of

ideas to make it even bet-ter next time and we’ve al-

ready booked some of the key things to make sure that happens. Meanwhile, a huge thank you for our wonderful volunteers and help-ers – without them the event would not have been possible.”

Reigning BBC Masterchef: The Professionals Champion, Chef Steven Edwards is launching the 2015 Create and Cook Competi-tion in Sussex on November 10, to encourage 12 to 14 year olds to enter this hotly contested cookery challenge encompassing Sussex, Hampshire and the Isle of Wight.

Steven, who is Head Chef at The Pass at South Lodge Hotel in Horsh-am, is a passionate ambassador and judge of the competition, which is organised by Fit2cook food educa-tion and sponsored by The Southern Co-operative.

He said: “The Create and Cook competition is not just about cook-ing but being involved with the food journey from fi eld to plate. As a judge, I am looking for cooks who demonstrate this understanding as well as using technique to get the most from their chosen ingredi-ents.”

With cooking now compulsory on the school curriculum, the Cre-ate and Cook Competition has even more relevance. School pupils from Year 7-10 are now being asked to ‘understand the source, seasonal-ity and characteristics of a range of ingredients’ as well as have a gen-eral understanding of cookery tech-niques and nutrition.

Lily Collins and Keely Samain (14), pupils at The Academy Selsey won the Sussex fi nal of the 2014 Create and Cook competition but were beaten in the regional fi nal by Joe Lancaster and Alice Hyde, from Sandown Bay Academy on the Isle of Wight. Lily and Keely said: “This competition has been a really excit-ing and emotional journey and we were so pleased we got to the fi nal, everyone should have this oppor-tunity. It’s been exciting having Steven judge us, rather than watch-ing him on TV being judged for his cooking!”

The deadline for young cooks aged 12-14 years to enter the 2015 Create and Cook Competition is Friday, March 20, 2015, and entries need to be submitted through their school food technology department A county fi nal will be held in Hamp-shire, West Sussex and the Isle of Wight; the winners from these will face a regional fi nal in June to win £1000 for their school food tech-nology department and the coveted fi t2cook trophy.

Christmas is coming and in the spirit of goodwill I am cordially inviting you all to our next Dia-mond Club event!

The Sakakini Diamond Club gives people the opportunity to buy diamonds direct from a wholesaler, so you don’t have to pay a ‘marked up’ price from a jeweller.

At our next Diamond Club event, in our Carfax shop on Thursday, 30th October from 6.30pm to 8pm, you can speak to jewellery experts on a one-to-one basis about diamond investing.

We will be welcoming you to our extensively refurbished shop with bubbles and canapés for a spar-kling free event.

A diamond’s value, as you will know, can vary wildly depend-ing on its shape, colour, clarity, and weight. This makes buying diamonds nerve-wracking, as you can’t always guarantee good ad-vice. As a Diamond Club member, you can avoid these pitfalls.

On 30th October you can find out all you need to know about the

long and short term benefits of diamond investment.

You can view a stunning collec-tion of diamonds and jewellery, and you’ll be treated to an ex-clusive preview of our Christmas stock. There will also be an op-portunity to purchase silver jew-ellery at wholesale prices too!

I will be there, of course, to give a presentation on diamonds, just to help people understand the origins, beauty and investment potential of these stunning allo-tropes of carbon!

Over the years, diamonds have proved to be a far better invest-ment than any ISA, and you won’t

find better prices than directly through a wholesaler.

For example, you can buy a 2.09 carat round brilliant cut diamond (H-VS2) for about £11,000 in the Diamond Club. This has an insur-ance value of about £40,000.

So do come along to our free event. We will offer you the op-portunity to become a member of the Sakakini Diamond Club and experience all the financial ben-efits.

Membership gives you access to wholesale diamonds, and you’ll receive 20% off all fully-priced items in the shop, 50% off rho-dium plating, and a free annual jewellery check.

A lot of people ask me ‘What’s in it for you?’

For me, it’s all about trust and spreading the word.

I want people to talk about the Diamond Club and the value it gives.’

Register to attend the event now by calling 01403 250200 or email [email protected] to re-ceive a free £10 gift voucher (to be collected on arrival).

Alternatively pop by and see us at 45 Carfax.

Last Thursday’s town centre Chil-dren In Need Halloween Party, organised by Horsham District Council with Rotary Club of Horsh-am attracted and entertained hun-dreds of young families thanks to the participation of businesses and partners from around the town.

The fantastic weather meant town visitors once again enjoyed all the fun of Halloween with most ac-tivities centred around Thursday’s market on the Carfax on Thursday, October 30.

A BBC television crew were on hand for the fourth year running to film the town’s Children In Need fundraising activities and Horsham Rotary had arranged for the now obligatory visit by BBC’s Pudsey and

Blush in person. With Santander Bank offering to match all this year’s town centre Children In Need funds from the event, a fabulous to-tal in the region of £2700 was raised on the day.

Children of all ages delighted in showing off their best Halloween costumes at the fancy dress com-petition, sponsored by Non Stop Party Shop and children queued up for face painting by Busydays, pottery painting by Ceramic Shack from Piries Place and in the Activ-ity Marquee sponsored by Gasgoine Pees. The DoStuffBus pumpkin carving, sponsored by Santander was particularly popular with over 100 pumpkins carved.

Story Telling by Horsham Library

Services and the ‘Cute Pumpkin’ roving entertainer sponsored by Swan Walk’s Toy Barnhaus were enjoyed by many of the younger audiences and a number of market traders and members of the public entered the pumpkin carving com-petition later in the day with prizes provided by The Capitol, Sains-bury’s, Toy Barnhaus, Shake Away and Subway.

Dave Benson-Phillips played two hugely entertaining sets that had both parents and children ‘dancing in the aisles’.

Some great feedback has been re-ceived and the organisers hope to include an October half term town centre event in 2015 providing local business support continues.

All Hallows Eve on Oc-tober 31, is a wonder-ful day. A real treat for the kids towards the end of the year

when they can enjoy them-selves by tricking each other or eating copious amounts of boiled sugar.

Of course it symbolises a much more ancient custom of honour-ing the dead but somehow it has been mixed with a false idea that ‘it be witches night’ (which is the actually at the end of April) but that, as they say, is verbal history for you.

One thing I have been growing this year has been pumpkins and you may ask why, as the shops are always full of them now.

The truth be told, I actually like to eat pumpkins and am always slightly disappointed to see such a huge amount of food thrown away because we don’t know what to do with it.

As somebody who does not eat gluten, a pumpkin is a fan-

tastic ingredient to add to cakes, pasta and bread mixtures. I also enjoy a good hearty soup, which if you cook the whole pumpkin can be potted up and stored in the freezer to bring out on really cold winter days in the garden to warm the soul.

The Americans also use pump-kin as both a savoury or a sweet fi lling for pies – depending on mood one supposes.

But this arrival to our gardens from the new world now has a very international following. It is an ingredient in many coun-tries as a fruit to be cooked in curries or as an addition to sauc-es; the Chinese use the leaves in cooking too, which just goes to show how versatile this plant is and well worth the space to grow next year.

They also store well if left in a cool and dry place. If you buy these fruit now for the ridicu-lously low prices you see in the shops, you can put them in the pantry or cool store for a time later in the year when you want to eat it. A truly fantastic plant.Guy’s spicy pumpkin soup• A large cooking pot• Hand Blender• 1 whole pumpkin

• 4 shallots• Butter• Teaspoon of Chilli fl akes• Whole pepper corns• Salt• Single cream• 1 chicken stock cube in 1 pint

of boiling water• Cup of peas or sweetcorn

Cut the pumpkin into sec-tions. Remove all the pith and seeds. Remove all the skin and cut the pumpkin into cubes.

Slice the shallots and fry them in a large pot with a knob of but-ter until they are soft making sure they do not burn. Add chilli fl akes.

Turn the heat down, then fi ll to ¾ with diced pumpkin. Keep stirring as you add the stock.

Top up pan with water until pumpkin is nearly covered and bring to boil. Put in 10 whole peppercorns and add a large pinch of salt. Stir and turn down to a simmer.

Leave soup on a low heat un-til the pumpkin has softened. Using a hand blender, blend the soup into a smooth semi-viscous liquid. Add a cupful of peas or sweetcorn and turn off the heat.

Leave for ten minutes, stir in cream then serve. (Don’t add the cream if you are freezing it).

Children from schools across the region visited Christ’s Hospital to have a fi rst-hand experience of a range of aspects of Tudor Life on Friday, October 10.

Time spent with members of the History Department dressed as each of the Tudor monarchs gave a sense of the changes and uncertainties that marked sixteenth century Eng-land, while the School chemists were able to recreate the wonder experienced by the early alchemists

as they unravelled the secrets of the natural world.

Music features heavily in the life of Christ’s Hospital and a perfor-mance in the spectacular setting of the Chapel by the School’s talented Chapel Choir fi red young musical imaginations, while a spectacular display of Tudor falconry and time engaged in Tudor-style cooking and maypole dancing, showed what fun could be had in a pre-PlayStation age.

Adam Reid, Head of History said:

“The Living History Day is always one of the great highlights of the year for Christ’s Hospital, and is an excellent opportunity for the Histo-ry Department to share its passion for the past with a new audience.

Given the ancient traditions, rich history and spectacular architec-ture of the School, it is both fun and educative to spend a day immersed in the Tudor world from which CH sprang in 1552.”

Christ’s Hospital pupils relive history

After my short break in Septem-ber, October has been very much business as usual.

The month started with the Age UK annual meeting which focused on “Creating a Dementia Friendly Horsham District”.

This was an extremely informa-tive session in respect to the work being carried out by Age UK in Hor-sham district and the challenges they now face as dementia is a growing issue and more widely rec-ognised within our community.

There is some fantastic work being done by this group and the message is that that there is help and assistance available for both suff erers and carers. Dementia is a life changing disease and can have catastrophic eff ects on the family and those that have to care for people aff ected. Over 800,000 people in the UK have now been diagnosed with dementia. An esti-mated 700,000 families and friends are aff ected. One in three people over the age of 65 are likely to de-velop dementia. People in the UK are living longer so this is an ever increasing problem. If you are af-fected in any way by this condition then seek help, this is not some-thing you need to face alone.

I attended the Hall & Woodhouse Community Chest awards in Pat-cham. This was one of the more

pleasant events where the Dorset based brewery who have a number of public houses within the district present charities that have applied for an award with a donation to-wards a specifi c project. It is truly wonderful to see businesses being able to give something back to the community.

My next appointment was a “Hor-sham Twinning Association” meet-ing. Horsham district is “twinned” with Lage in Germany and St. Maix-ent in France. The members of

this association work very hard to promote a greater understanding through exchange visits and work closely with local schools. If you are interested in the work of this group they will be having a stall at the Ro-tary Charity Market in the Carfax on Sunday, November 30. I am sure they will welcome all the support they can get.

I was delighted to be able to open a new business on East Street. The opening of “1898 café” is further evidence of the success of East Street and the growing confi dence of business people.

I also had a very interesting af-ternoon with the Mayor of Lake Barrington, Chicago. He and is his family were visiting Horsham town to research some family history. His grandfather was one of the original gardeners of Leonardslee Gardens and he had been invited to see these wonderful gardens. He and his fam-ily then visited Horsham District Council and were given a tour of Park House, the main council offi c-es and fi nished with a photo shoot in the council chamber.

The War Memorial in the Carfax will be the focus of this year’s Remembrance Sunday service in Horsham at 11am on Sunday, November 9.

Remembrance Sunday is the day traditionally put aside to re-member all those who have giv-en their lives in war.

It was originally conceived as a commemoration of the war dead of the First World War but after the Second World War, the scope of the ceremony was extended to focus on the na-tion’s dead of both World Wars, and in 1980 it was widened once again to extend the remem-brance to all who have suffered and died in conflict in the service of their country and all those who mourn them.

The timings for the service will see the Parade arrive at Horsh-am’s War Memorial at approxi-mately 10.50am on Sunday, No-vember 9.

Led by The Rev Canon Guy Bridgewater, the Vicar of Hor-sham, the service will begin with the hymn ‘O God Our Help in Ages Past’.

The two minutes silence, in memory of the fallen, will then be held at 11am.

The Chairman of Horsham District Council, Cllr Brian O’Connell, will lead the wreath laying on behalf of the people of

the Horsham District. He will be followed by Mr Da-

vid Copestake, Chairman of the Royal British Legion Horsham Branch and Rt. Hon. Fran-cis Maude MP will lay the third wreath.

Representatives of the armed services and youth organisations will then lay their wreaths, each as a mark of solemn respect.

When the last wreath has been laid, the Parade Marshall

will call the Parade to attention and one

verse of the Na-tional Anthem will be sung.

A church ser-vice will follow at the Parish Church of St.

Mary The Virgin in the Cause-

way, Horsham to which everyone is

invited. After the service, the

Parade will leave the Causeway and march, via South Street, back through the Carfax where the salute will be taken by Cllr Brian O’Connell and Mr David Copestake.

Working with the Church and Horsham District Council, the Royal British Legion is the main local organiser of Horsham’s Re-membrance Sunday service.

A number of Remembrance Sunday services take place throughout the Horsham dis-trict on this day. Please note any changes to the scheduled event will be publicised on the coun-cil’s facebook and Twitter pages.

Rachael’s Kitchen unveiled Peter Oldreive’s ‘A War Horse’ on Mon-day, November 8, which is due to go up for auction this weekend with all proceeds going to the Roy-al British Legion.

The painting will be auctioned at the Poppy Donation Centre in Swan Walk at 11am on Saturday, Novem-ber 8 in a frame from Ragdolls Fine Framing based in Horsham town centre who also re-stretched the canvas.

Peter, who belongs to the Solent Aviation Artists group worked as a commercial painter for 37 years working in the film industry and creating pub signs, but today focus-es on painting for pleasure.

He said: “I thought I’d work with this World War One theme on this

painting, I wanted to keep in mean-ingful, and I thought I would use that as the focus.”

Painting runs in Pete’s family and his father and grandfather were both commercial artists and he de-scribed his family as having “art in their genes”.

Pete’s other work features Hurri-canes and Spitfires and his personal work has a focus on aviation.

Pete added: “I love painting, It’s in me and I loved doing it.”

‘A War Horse’ is currently on dis-play at Art Ache Gallery and you can view it on Saturday at 11am in Swan Walk for the auction.

All proceeds will be donated to the Royal British Legion.

For more information on the Art Ache gallery visit www.artachegal-lery.wordpress.com.

National Adoption Week Open EveningTuesday 4 November 6 to 9pm (presentation starts at 6.30pm)County Hall NorthChart Way, HorshamRH12 1XH

If you cannot make the Open Evening then there is a community event at the County Mall, Crawley on Wednesday 5 November, 12 to 5pm.

Horsham’s Mixed Mar-ket, currently hosted in the Bishopric area of the Town Centre, is set to return to its origi-

nal home at Piries Place Shopping Centre from Saturday, November 1.

The market’s operators, Horsham Markets, have been in negotiation with the landlords and tenants of Piries Place in recent weeks togeth-er with Horsham District Council and all have agreed for a move well before Christmas to avoid too much disruption to trade.

The new ‘old’ home of the mar-ket is within a stone’s throw of the award-winning Local Produce Mar-ket in the Carfax that has grown extensively over the last four years. Many of the stallholders that origi-nally traded at the Mixed Market when it was sited in Piries in the 1990’s are still trading in Horsham and the operators are confident that a move back to the East End of the Town Centre will attract more trad-ers to create a vibrant and exciting market every Saturday. Brenda and Ted Kingham have been running a bakery stall at the market for over two decades and they welcome the move back. Brenda remembers, “the market was very vibrant in Piries Place before we left over ten years ago and we are very hopeful the move will help both the market and the area.”

The move is also supported by Pi-ries Place tenants including Donna Camera, owner of La Vida Boutique who explains, “a professionally managed market in Piries Place is a wonderful idea. We hope that the market will complement the already diverse mix of independent traders in Piries Place. Carfax market is a big draw for the town and has gained an excellent reputation for the quality of its stall holders and merchandise. I feel confident this market will fur-ther lift Piries as a shopping mecca for independent shopping”

Pj Aldred of Horsham Markets says: “It is really encouraging that

the council, town businesses and key stakeholders support the mar-kets in Horsham which, of course, helps to retain it’s identity as a real market town. There are many ad-vantages for the market to return to it’s roots not least that it is far more sheltered and more conducive for all year-round trading.” The site was home to Horsham Market prior even to Piries Place being built and was closed temporarily whilst Waitrose and the Centre was built. A market was brought back in 1991 once the Centre was completed and returns once again to the area just off the Carfax.

Market returns homeThis Autumn, Impulse Leisure will be encouraging local people to make exercising part of their day – a new membership campaign based on research carried out over the summer.

The research asked both mem-bers and non-members to consid-er the most important feature for them when thinking of joining a gym/leisure centre, how they prefer to be communicated with once they are a member, and where they look when researching different memberships and locations.

More than 200 people re-sponded to a se-ries of questions, with members and non-members over-whelmingly agreeing that facilities and price are the most important aspect of a leisure centre’s offer. Distance from home was rated a close third, at 35%, and 19% of respondents rat-ed friendliness of staff as a reason for joining a leisure centre.

Using the top three results, Im-pulse Leisure’s marketing team were able to build a campaign fo-cussing on the facilities, price and the distance from home of their centres.

Marketing Manager for Impulse Leisure, Michael Hurcum, said: “We asked people what’s important to them and designed our Autumn campaign around those wants. Showcasing our facilities is the key feature of the ‘Make Impulse Part of your Day’ campaign, alongside an example of one of our membership prices and location details of all of our centres, so people can see just how close and convenient we are.

“Now that the colder, dark-er nights and mornings are

setting in, we know that many can find it hard to get the motivation to exercise. We are en-couraging everyone to make Impulse part of their day and get into

the habit of exercise, which should help make

it easier to stick with.“We would like you thank

everyone in Thurrock who took part in our research this summer, as you’ve helped us shape our new campaign around what you want to see the most, and what you find useful.”

If you are interested in joining Impulse Leisure they have a range of membership options available, visit www.impulseleisure.co.uk or your local Impulse Leisure Centre for more information.

Hamptons International’s Horsh-am branch is launching its annual Christmas drawing competition aimed at local nursery and primary school children.

The “Draw a Christmas Cracker” competition is open to primary school children and nursery school children can take part in the “Decorate the Christmas Cracker” competition.

Children from the local nursery schools are encouraged to partici-pate in the competition by colouring in the Christmas Cracker, while older primary school children can use their creative skills to draw and decorate a cracker of their own design. All com-petition entries will be displayed in the local Hamptons International branch window from early December through to the New Year.

The winners who will be an-nounced before the end of the school term, will be awarded with a deluxe art kit. Two hundred pounds in prize money will be donated to

the winning school. The closing date for entries will be

the November 21. The final judging process will be down to visitors to the Hamptons International branch who between November 24 to De-cember 5, will be invited to vote for their favourite drawing.

Hamptons International would like to encourage members of the public to come to their local office to view the works and vote for the one they like best.

Jodie Pickles, Manager at Horsh-am Hamptons International com-ments: “The Hamptons ‘Christmas Drawing Competition’ is a popular event and we are delighted to be holding it again this year. Working with the local community is impor-tant to us. This is the first year we have been involved with Farlington Prep school, and we are pleased to be partnering with them.”

As part of National Consumer Week, residents in Horsham dis-trict are being urged to look out for rogue doorstep traders preying on elderly and vulnerable neighbours.

With as many as 170,000 inci-dents of doorstep crime occurring nationally each year, the National Consumer Week 2014 ‘Good Neigh-bours Stop Rogue Traders’ cam-paign advises neighbours, friends, families and carers how to spot in-cidents of concern and the practical steps they can take to support vul-nerable victims and to gather rel-evant information.

These traders often cold call vulnerable residents and offer to carry out work at properties which

is of poor quality, unnecessary and charged at extortionate prices, sometimes even driving the victim to the bank to withdraw money or threatening them.

The detriment of doorstep crime reaches beyond financial loss. It can cause a person’s mental health to deteriorate and in some cases, also suffer physical harm.

To support the campaign, Trading Standards Officers will be out and about in the Horsham district dur-ing National Consumer Week pro-moting the key campaign messages and giving out ‘no cold caller’ door stickers that residents can display to deter doorstep callers. The stick-ers are also available from libraries

across the district. If you need advice in relation to a

doorstep caller issue then call the Citizens Advice consumer helpline on 03454 04 05 06.

Incident details will be forwarded to Trading Standards for follow up.

For more information about Na-tional Consumer week and for practi-cal advice on how you can help prevent vulnerable householders becoming victims of doorstep criminals go to www.westsussex.gov.uk/doorstep.

The most important factor in employee happiness is not money but friend-ship, reveals research by Chiumento, a multi-dis-

ciplinary HR consultancy. 73% of British workers cite good relation-

ships with colleagues as the key reason they enjoy their job, while only 48% cite fi nancial reward.

Despite frequent reports of dis-satisfaction with work at this time of year, it is not all doom and gloom according to the Chiumento Hap-piness Index. One quarter of em-ployees describe themselves as very happy at work, while only one in fi ve describe themselves as un-happy. But the unhappier an em-ployee is, the more likely they will see money, or a perceived lack of it,

to be an underlying cause of their unhappiness.Key Findings:• Women are happier at work than

men: 82% of women claim to be happy in their jobs compared with 78% of men. Despite, or maybe because of the lack of women at the top of organisations, women feel more job satisfaction than men.

• At 85%, those aged 55+ are the happiest employees, possibly be-cause they have reached the pin-

With the Government emphasising how important our happiness is, this month our Business expert Janette Whitney comments on recent research into employee satisfaction

nacle of their careers. Employees in their 40’s are the least happy of all age groups.

• Happiness declines the longer people stay with an organisa-tion. 82% of people who have been with their current employer for 2 years or less are happy. This drops to 76% of those who have been with their employer for 10 years or more, as the ‘honeymoon period’ ends.

• Overall, lack of communication from the top is cited by just under half of all respondents as being the main cause of unhappiness in the workplace, but this rises to 71% of very unhappy employees.

• Small businesses make employ-ees happier: 86% of employees who work for organisations with between 20 and 100 staff feel happy compared with 78% of em-ployees who work in organisa-tions with over 1000 staff .

The 8 Factors that make us happy at work – in ranked order:1. Friendly, supportive colleagues2. Enjoyable work3. Good boss or line manager4. Good work/life balance5. Varied work6. Belief that we’re doing something

worthwhile7. Feeling that what we do makes a

diff erence8. Being part of a successful teamThe 8 Factors that make us unhap-py at work – in ranked order1. Lack of communication from the top2. Uncompetitive salary3. No recognition for achievements4. Poor boss/line manager5. Little personal development6. Ideas being ignored7. Lack of opportunity for good per-

formers8. Lack of benefi ts

Business should not ignore the value of good relationships at work, where staff are respected and trust-ed, and enjoy a supportive work-place community. If organisations think a little more deeply about

what employees really want and what will make them happy, they could reap the rewards. Happy em-ployees will not only improve the working environment, but also in-crease revenue.

And what about the boss? Are you happy with your overall business & its performance?

Abracadabra Beans on Toast were the magic words at the popular children’s entertainer’s show at The Capitol last week.

The hour long show was perfect to entertain the children over half term packed with magic, music and fun and games for all the audience.

Tom’s show is presented as a game show with audiences from each performance competing for the most beans on their toast for the title of the ‘Best Audience in the World’.

Each segment was engaging and enjoyable, there was a particularly fun quiz game at the end in which

one lucky member of the audi-ence could have (accidentally) won Tom’s Mini.

A big group sing along of the Ho-key Cokey saw all the children in the audience taking part in the dance with Tom, and I could see from their faces a few of the children were starstruck by meeting Mr Foolery.

Tom was also out in the foyer before and after the show greeting fans and posing in photos, adding a little more to the entire visit to the theatre.

Tom’s show is energetic and full of non-stop laughs and he is clearly enjoying the performance as much as everyone in the audience.

Abracadabra Beans on Toast is a great fun show, that off ers some-thing for children and parents alike. I don’t think I’m alone in saying Tom put a smile on my face from start to fi nish.

Very few comedians could turn the worst year of their life into a re-sounding success, but fresh from winning the most successful ever series of Big Brother by a land-slide, comedy king Jim Davidson has done exactly that.

‘No Further Action’ will see Jim tell the story of his arrest and the nightmare 12 months that followed, the clearing of his name and win-ning the heart of the nation all over again as a Big Brother champion. Jim will be doing all this in the only way he knows how, by entertaining people, something he’s been doing to great acclaim for nearly 40 years.

It promises to be the most out-rageous, hilarious and insightful show Jim has ever performed, but most of all it will be the truth.

On announcing the new show, Jim said: “It was an interesting time, I had a rough ride for a while, but it’s great to be back on stage doing what I love, and the best way of dealing with a nightmare is to talk about it.

“I always seem to fi nd the funny side of things, even this. For a fi -nale, along came Big Brother. Wait until you hear the inside stories on that.”

No stranger to the limelight, hav-ing dominated prime time televi-sion comedy for over a decade, Jim is not only one of the country’s best established comics, but one of the most popular stand-up comedians of all time.

The show will be at the Capitol, Horsham, on Monday, November 24 and Tuesday, November 25. Perfor-mances are at 7.30pm and tickets

are £23.50 or £20 for concessions. Tickets can be booked by calling the Box Offi ce on 01403 750220 or by visiting www.thecapitolhorsham.com.

The Horsham Guitar Academy will be holding a charity Christmas concert on Saturday, November 15, at the Tythe Barn to raise money for charity, Youth Music.

Students at the academy will have the opportunity to perform in front of an audience and Mark will fi nish off the perfor-mance with some of his own songs.

Academy founder, Mark Ben Wilson said: “All profi ts for the con-cert will go to Youth Mu-sic, which is a great char-ity that provide more than 90,000 young people with the opportunity to make music, helping them to overcome the challenges they face in their lives. Youth music projects support young people to develop

creative and social skills, make pos-itive contributions to their commu-nity and improve their wellbeing.

“Apart from raising money for a great charity, the concert is also

about helping my students de-velop as musicians and

become more confi dent performers. I think that performing music plays a very important role in the community. It helps bring people to-

The Horsham District Wellbeing team are run-ning a series of events to support the ‘Movember’ campaign, and change

the face of men’s health through providing knowledge to aid pre-vention and early detection for prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health issues.

It has been highlighted that men are at higher risk of developing dis-ease, by not openly discussing their health, reluctance in taking action because they don’t feel ill, engag-ing in higher risk activities which threaten their health, and due to the stigmas around certain health problems.

The statistics are alarming and should not be ignored. More men need to be aware and take control of their health, as men’s life expec-tancy is 4 years less than women, 1 in 4 will develop a mental health related illness each year, men have a 14% higher risk of develop-ing cancer than women and a 37% chance of dying from it, more than two thirds or 63% of men in the UK are obese, and deaths from poten-tially avoidable causes is account-able for approximately 24% of all

UK deaths. We along with the ‘Movember’

campaign want to get men to take control of their health by knowing their family history and any in-creased risk factors, being aware of their healthy body weight, staying active and aiming for recommend-ed exercise guidelines, developing strategies to manage stress, tak-ing action early, staying mentally healthy, not smoking and sticking to recommended healthy moder-ate drinking levels, getting enough good sleep, eating a healthy bal-anced diet, and being safe in the sun.

The Horsham District Wellbeing team offer a number of men spe-cific interventions as below:

Men’s Health Clinic, every Mon-day 6-9pm at Piries Bar, Piries Place, Horsham. Men get the op-portunity to get a FREE MOT giving an insight into their current health status from weight/body mass in-dex, muscle mass, body fat per-centage, bone mass, metabolism, hydration levels and activity levels. Clients can be set goals and have follow up meetings with the advi-sor.

‘It’s All About Men’ FREE 12 week

health and fitness course with nu-tritional advice and guidance, as well as a low impact exercise ses-sion. Clients will be set goals each week for nutrition and exercise, and will make small sustainable chang-es towards their final goal. There are daytime and evening courses available in community venues across the Horsham district.

You have witnessed the crane, you have experienced the nighttime detours, and you have observed the new bridge built across the A24.

With the continually growing westward expansion of Horsham the malign tumour of development is squeezing its way through the westward gap between Horsham, Christ’s Hospital and Southwater, and with it the various paths and routes between those spaces.

Interestingly one able hobbyist equipped with a remotely operated drone and video camera has cap-tured the images of this develop-ment and we begin to get the feel for the future of Horsham’s growth.

Hint: it wont involve pedestrians, bikes, or anything that does not run on four wheels. Two roundabouts, one bridge, and a clear divide be-tween Horsham west and the Wick-hurst lane developments and none of it suggests room for the able bod-ied or cycling enthused.

With one bridge over the carriage way it begs the question how will the traffi c fl ow in the event that it is closed off due to an incident?

Indeed as I look to more of the

entrances and exits to our town and district it becomes obvious that those capable of making decisions

and drawing up plans make no al-lowance for anything other than the automobile.

Searching inwards I see no signs of any improvement to those poli-cies. Looking over the Bishopric development and the subsequent carriage way alterations around the west end I fi nd fewer routes and op-tions to progress which do not put me at the mercy of cars or trucks.

Pedestrians must wait, cyclists must stop cycling, everything must make way for the carriageways and cars and trucks and buses and through it all nothing exists that makes you want to walk into town, to walk around the neighborhoods, or to cycle across the town and into the countryside.

Not that I hold much hope in consultation regarding Bishopric’s development resulting in a feeling that any opinions were heard. If the yellow brick road is any indica-tion then all we are left with is a nod to the audience and then deliveries made according to extenuating cir-cumstances.

That Horsham is growing and changing is not the cause of my concerns but that we are ignoring those value in the rural and coun-tryside communities. That a pleas-ant walk, a comfortable bike ride, and a community feeling, are only successful if those villages are con-nected by more than privilege of car ownership.

Media commentary on interest rates and when they may rise is causing high levels of confu-sion for home buyers and own-ers, according to estate agency Fox & Sons.

Local Mortgage Services Con-sultant Gabrielle Nassiry who operates from the Horsham Fox & Sons branch, says there are currently high levels of compe-tition amongst mortgage lenders which is actually driving interest rates on mortgages down at the current time.

Equally, and following recent data from the Money Advice Service that more than half of homeowners are not prepared for an interest rate rise, Fox & Sons is urging anyone on a standard variable rate to come and discuss their options, especially as there are some very good, long-term fi xed rates currently available.

“The mortgage market is highly competitive at the cur-rent time meaning home buyers and those looking to remortgage can really benefi t from reviewing their mortgage arrangements,” says Gabrielle “The anticipated base rate rise, which is look-ing likely for next year, tends to dominate the headlines, and hides the fact that many mort-gage lenders have actually re-duced their rates at the present time. Savvy home buyers would do well to consider what’s avail-able and not get bogged down by confusing messages in the press.”

If you would like to arrange a meeting with Fox & Sons’s Mort-gage Services Consultant, con-tact the branch on 01403 217417 or email:[email protected].

Saturday November 1 - South League Premier Division 2Horsham 3 - 1 London Edward-ians

HockeyMartin Read – Sports Reporter

Before this game London Edward-ians were unbeaten one place above Horsham, but despite going a goal down from a back handed strike after 20 minutes, almost back to full strength Horsham responded strongly against their tall, vigorous opponents, posting a highly creditable win.

Soon, equalising from a bold John Burroughs hit, their fi rst real shot in the D, Horsham promptly went further ahead courtesy of a Matt Hough short corner, his sixth

goal this term. Another short cor-ner attempt went wide but after some stout defending, the back line fi ghting for every ball, epitomised by Freddie Campbell clearing a dan-gerous Edwardian threat, Horsham went into the break 2-1 up.

Then, a Mark Humphreys pen-alty fl ick sealed Horsham’s well deserved 3-1 victory. Horsham Team Manager Al Campbell told

the District Post: “This was the best three points we’ve scored this sea-son – to come back to win 3-1 after being a goal down was special. We toughed it out very well.” Captain Duncan Howarth added: “Edward-ians thrashed Barnes 9-3 earlier in the season with nine diff erent play-ers getting onto the score sheet, so we’re delighted to have ended their unbeaten run.”

Horsham leapfrog into third, but it’s tough at the top, fi rst and sec-ond clubs Banbury and Henley hav-ing each won all of their fi ve games (Banbury trouncing basement club Barnes, yet to notch up a point, 10-1). Tomorrow (Saturday) Hor-sham visit sixth placed Tulse Hill & Dulwich who have won three out of fi ve, including despatching Marlow 2-1 last week.

Sport in brief

Table TennisDave Smith – Sports Editor

Horsham A started off their Craw-ley/Horsham League Premier Divi-sion with a 7-2 win over a weak-ened Horsham Spinners B side. Chris Vincent showed that he’s back into the groove with a maxi-mum return on the night.

Vincent and Dennis Hayden both beat Erik van Mol in their next game against Horsham Blades A to gain two useful points against one of the division’s leading teams and the week after they went down 5-4 to Horsham Spinners A, Vincent again being the leading man with

two victories. Foresters D proved a bridge too far at the back end of the month as the team went down 6-3, only Vincent really hitting form as he gained another fi ghting double.

The two Horsham Premier Divi-sion teams played out the fi rst of their two derbies within the season and the A team emerged victorious 6-3 courtesy of braces from Vincent, Harry Collins and Steve Hoad brac-es. Holly Holder however for the B team showed more evidence of her growing maturity in the Premier-ship orbit by beating Steve Hoad in fi ve sets and indeed to date Holly has only won two of her seven, fi ve-set encounters so perhaps her wins

ratio is not quite refl ecting the pro-gress she has made. Overall though Horsham B are continuing to fi nd the going tough and lie second from bottom, only Horsham Spinners B lying below them.

In Division 2 Horsham C sit com-fortably mid-table after their fi rst fi ve matches. Annie Brotherston led the team’s way with three wins in their 5-5 draw with Crawley Sports D. Mark Clover would also have been pleased to add two on that night but less enamoured on his next two outings against Forest-ers H and Crawley Sports C where he drew blanks in two 7-3 defeats.

Atlantis swimmers were in fi ne form again last Sunday, No-vember 2, when swimming in the second and fi nal day of The Sussex Winter Competition.

Building on last week’s excel-lent showing, Atlantis won 35 more medals including 18 gold. 11 year old Rebecca Barber won 4 more gold medals and she was joined by Jessica Mace (9), Ethel Whyman (11) and Beth Britton (15), who all won 3 of their events. In the boys’ events, An-drew Kershaw (15) bagged himself 5 medals from his 7 events, 3 of which were gold, and he was joined by Michael Pal-lister and Cam-eron Holden-Graham who were also event winners. Many other swim-mers were in the med-als, notably Millie Weedon (10) and Amelia Wright (11) who both won 3 medals while Toby van der Hut won 2.

In the younger age groups, swimmers were also awarded points as well as medals, and at the end of the two days, awards were presented to those swim-mers who had amassed the most points from all their swims. Jes-sica Mace won the 9 year old girls award, whilst in the 11 year old girls, Atlantis were well repre-sented with Ethel Whyman win-ning, Rebecca Barber coming

third and Amelia Wright fi fth. In the boys, Michael Pallister was just edged into second place in the 10 year old age group.

This new competition proved to be a very successful event for the County, and will now be-come an annual event, with the hope that it will become a Winter Championship, in due course. The facilities at The Pavilions were excellent and the whole event ran faultlessly, due main-ly to all the hard work from the County Offi cials, the volunteers from all the swimming clubs and

the leisure centre staff . It is hoped that Hor-

sham will become the regular host of

this event each year.

M e a n w h i l e , whilst all the excitement of the swimming gala was go-

ing on, the group of swimmers that

have been training in Lanzarote were starting

their journey home. They have spent the last week in intense training, spending up to 6 hours a day in the pool. The exhausted group returned home late on Sunday evening ready for Atlan-tis’ next competition, the sec-ond round of The Arena National League in Maidstone tomorrow, Saturday November 8. Currently sitting top of the league, Atlan-tis will be up against teams from Maidstone, Croydon, Orpington, Canterbury and Dartford in what should be a very close and excit-ing competition.

Saturday November 1 - London 3 South EastHorsham 1st XV 18 – 11 Bromley

RugbyRichard Ordidge – HRUFC

Horsham held on in this tense, nail biting top of the table encounter to defeat Bromley 18-11 and end their unbeaten run.

As a result of a serious injury to winger Lee Taylor after 56 minutes, who suffered a dislocated hip and fractured pelvis, a delay of twenty minutes followed before the game was moved to an adjoining pitch.

Horsham started quickly and Gibbs thought he had scored but the ball was knocked forward in the tackle. The referee brought the play back to an earlier penalty offence and on 4 minutes Will Bell kicked Horsham into the lead.

Horsham were dominating in the scrum and driving Bromley back-wards and on 19 minutes, Gibbs pounced on a loose pass by a Brom-ley player to round his man to score under the posts. The try was con-verted by Will Bell to take Horsham into a 10-0 lead.

Nick Bell was yellow carded for hands in the ruck and Tom Beau-mont for Bromley slotted the pen-alty from in front of the posts to reduce the deficit. On the stroke of half time Beaumont kicked another penalty and Horsham went into the break 10-6 up.

The game was in the balance and the breakdown was ferociously con-tested between two evenly matched sides. Horsham were awarded an-other scrum penalty but Will Bell’s long range attempt fell just short, then when Tuhakaraina made a

break followed by a multi phase at-tack, Johnson crossed the line for a try on 48 minutes which was un-converted.

From a quick line out Taylor was clattered from behind by a legiti-mate tackle that however caused his serious injury necessitating the lengthy stop in play.

After 68 minutes Horsham stole a Bromley line out, and following an offence by the visitors the kicking duties were handed over to Johnson who kicked a penalty from 35 yards to take the Green and Whites into what looked to be a comfortable 18-6 lead.

Bromley had other ideas and fol-lowing a penalty to the corner they put together an excellent catch and drive from the line out to send George Scott over in the corner. The try was unconverted and the deficit reduced to 18 -11. The visi-tors continued to press in search of a converted try to level the scores but Horsham held out to the final whistle.

Horsham coach Nick Stocker re-flected on what he saw as a poor performance by his side, “We should have had three or four more tries which would have reflected our domination. We were snatching at the ball and gave away too many penalties. They had a good tackling defence but for most of the game we neutralised their driving maul. We wish Lee Taylor well and a speedy recovery. His injury is disappointing for him as he has only just returned following concussion. I thought Will Bell was one of the few players to do himself justice and Liam Brady had a good game on his first start”.

Horsham’s next league game is at home to Grasshoppers from Isle-worth in Middlesex in the second round of the Senior Vase on No-vember 8 with kick off at 2.00pm.

Horsham Team: Talbot, Stone, Brady, Grover, Jonny Whiting, Thompson, N Bell (Pirt 40) (Smith 60) Tredgett, Rush, Johnson, Gibbs, Tuhakaraina, Ordidge, Taylor (James Whiting 56) W Bell.

Pulborough returned to winning ways after leading comfortably in the first half, easing off after the break and then coming home victorious. Although remaining eighth Borough have now put five points between them and their closest chaser.

The returning Will Truscott set Borough off with an early try. Then full back Frazer Oliphant-Hope’s trusty boot notched up useful pen-alty points to provide a seemingly comfortable 21-9 half time advan-tage, increased by a further kick just after the break. But, Gilling-ham responded strongly with a try – unconverted – before crossing the line again, this time kicked over to

threaten a Borough defeat. Urged on by a large vocal crowd buoyed by a convivial vice presidents’ lunch Borough missed a penalty against the wind and then eschewed an-other kicking opportunity to go for the line, a tactic rewarded when a driving maul enabled Charlie Den-man to grab a push over try. This was unconverted but Borough held on to secure a much needed win.

Captain Seth Wise telling The District Post: “A win, but we gave away silly penalties keeping them in the game, making it closer than it should have been.” Head Coach Clayton Saunders agreed, saying: “It was great to win but we need to tighten up on our on-field deci-sion making.” After a week’s rest Borough return on 15th November with a trip to fifth placed Old Dun-stonians, winners of their last two games. Meanwhile Borough sec-onds – the Pirates – maintained their push for promotion with a re-sounding win against Chichester.

Will Palmer will contest the BRDC F4 Winter Championship with HHC Motorsport, the team with which he made a strong impres-sion during this year’s main sea-son.

In his first full season in single-seaters, 17-year-old Palmer scored two victories at Snetterton in June and five further podiums at Brands Hatch, Oulton Park, Silverstone and Donington Park. The strength of these performances was recog-nised when Palmer was inducted, in August, into the BRDC Rising Stars programme.

Palmer - son of MSV Chief Execu-tive Jonathan Palmer and brother to newly-crowned GP2 Champion Jolyon - has raced with HHC since 2012, first in Ginetta Juniors, then making his single-seater debut in the BRDC F4 Winter Championship last year. He scored a victory in just his fifth F4 race.

“I’m really looking forward to

contesting the Winter Series with HHC Motorsport,” Palmer com-mented. “They have done an ex-ceptional job this year, which I am sure will continue into the Winter Series, so I am delighted to be stay-ing with them. As ever in BRDC F4, it will be very competitive, but with the team’s support and all that I have learnt this year, we are in a very strong position to challenge for the title.”

HHC Motorsport’s Charlie Kemp commented: “We’re delighted that Will is staying with us for the Win-ter Championship. He had an excel-lent first season in single-seaters, and his performance at Snetterton in June in particular was outstand-ing. He was quick at every circuit we visited and I have no doubt that he will be a title contender for the Winter Championship.”

The BRDC F4 Winter Champi-onship, consisting of eight races, commences at Snetterton on 8-9 November, with the second round at Brands Hatch on 22-23 Novem-ber.

This season four Farlington girls have enjoyed great success in triathlons.

Isabella Hayes, Maddy Giller, Amelia Wright and

Gemma Cumber all fi nished in the top ten of their respective age groups in the Triathlon England South East Region.

In order to rank competitors 8 event dates are chosen over the season, even though the girls take part in many more, and completed times are use to allocate points. The events are made up of triathlons, aquathlons (swimming and run-ning) and dualthlons (running and cycling).

Issy Hayes won the Billingshurst triathlon and came 4th at the Hever Triathlon. She won her age group at the Steyning triathlon. She came 2nd in the SE Regional duathlon and 2nd at the Ringmer triathlon. Issy fi nishes the season 2nd in the TS1 category.

Maddy Giller came 6th in the Bill-ingshurst triathlon whilst compet-

ing in a higher age group and is part of the South East team in the forth-coming Triathlon England London Region versus South East Region duathlon. She is placed 5th in the TS1 category.

Amelia Wright came 3rd at the Hever Triathlon and lies 7th in the TS2 category even though she only entered 2 of the qualifying events.

Gemma Cumber won a silver medal at the Billingshurst triathlon and is ranked 7th in the TS3 category having entered 3 of the 8 qualifying events. Gemma Cumber said “I re-ally enjoy taking part in the triath-lons. At the fi nish line I always feel I have achieved something great and I am glad the pain is over!” Sunday November 2 - FA Vase

– First RoundHorsham YMCA 3 Bedfont Sports 1

FootballTom Norris – Football Reporter

Horsham YMCA progressed into the Second Round of the FA Vase with a 3-1 win over Combined Counties Premier League side Bedfont Sports on Sunday after-noon.

With tenants Horsham’s FA Trophy tie taking precedence at Gorings Mead on Saturday after-noon, Peter Buckland’s side were forced to play their First Round fi xture a day later.

But the unusual arrangements failed to aff ect proceedings. Two goals from Luke Gedling and Liam Hunter in as many fi rst half min-utes handed the hosts an early lead, and although the Eagles halved the defi cit just before the break, substitute Martin Smith eased the pressure with a third for the home side midway through the second half.

YM manager Peter Buckland commented: “It was a good game. They were a good, young side and I knew that we were going to have to be on our game. In the end I thought that we made quite hard work of it. We weren’t at our one

hundred percent best today. We kept shutting off for fi ve or ten minute spells and then coming back into it, but I think it was the right result. I’m delighted to be in the next round and we’ll see where it takes us. My philosophy on the competition is simple re-ally. If you look at the Sussex Sen-ior Cup, you’re playing against Ryman Premier League teams and even Conference sides, and the FA Cup is even worse, so there is a shelf life with those.

“But this cup hasn’t. It is Step 5 all the way through. Therefore, it is very realistic to dream of pro-

gressing a long way, and what a day out it could be if we do. That’s a bit premature at the moment because we’ve only just won in the fi rst round, I know, but I defi -nitely love this competition and that is why I was so animated on the touchline.”

YM Team: Lockwood, D. Sul-livan, Carden, Dugdale, Evans, Gedling, Hunter (Jordan 89) Hib-bert, J. Brown (M. Smith 45) D. Brown, Gault (Wood 72). Goals-corers – YM: Gedling 11, Hunter 13, M. Smith 59. Bedfont Sports: Thomas 43. Unused Subs: March-ant, A. Smith.

Horsham SparrowsUnder 12 Boys – A convincing win

against Kirdford saw the team climb to joint league leaders after 7 games played.

Under 13 boys - In a very close game Lingfi eld took the lead 15 minutes into the fi rst half with a great strike. Sparrows then went further behind from another goal early in the second half. A goal from Alfi e W after some good play pulled one back but then unfortu-nately they had a goal disallowed for off side. Lingfi eld then put the pressure on for the last few minutes to secure the win. Man of the Match for Sparrows was Oliver S who had an outstanding game.

Under 15 Boys – A 3-3 draw away to Partridge green was enough for the team to pick up a point on the road.

Under 18 Boys – A great home win v Barnham Trojans saw the team progress to the next round of the cup. Final score Horsham Sparrows 8 Barnham 1.

Under 13 Girls – A tough away game saw the girls lose to top of the table Crawley Wasps. A consolation goal from Alice was the fi rst con-ceded by wasps in 7 games.

Under 14 girls – Tough condi-tions for both teams in a lunchtime KO. Sparrows started brightly and played some positive football creat-ing some good openings but found themselves a goal down. Sparrows responded immediately with a goal from Ruby E with a left footed strike into the top corner. After go-ing behind again, Sparrows rallied

and equalised, again it was Ruby E that found the back of the net. In a 2nd half which was quite even both teams pressed for a winner but it fi nished honours even.

Under 15 Girls – A great 4-2 home win for Horsham Sparrows against Hawks Youth with goals from Fliss L (2), Katie B and Fiona M.

Under 18 Girls – A tough away game against Crystal Place saw the team lose to extremely tough oppo-sition. 3 goals for Sparrows weren’t enough to change the result though.Roff ey Robins Athletic U15 2 – 2 Lower Beeding U15

Lower Beeding made the livelier start to this U15 Div. C match and went a goal up when Kane Minter scored within 5 minutes of the kick-off . But this early setback seemed to spur Robins into action. They soon began to dominate and were re-warded before half time when Joe Lamberty struck home a shot to the bottom right hand corner. After the break, it was the Lower Beeding de-fence who made an early mistake. Jack Roe took full advantage and put Robins ahead. However, Kane Minter scored his second to level the scores and deny Robins their third league win of the season.Sussex County Youth League

Roff ey climbed to third in the ta-ble with a 2 - 1 victory at Mile Oak. The hosts took the lead but Rof-fey’s response was positive and the equaliser came just before half time, Aaron Pyzer was tripped just outside the box and Callum Nash’s excellent free kick hit the net. De-clan Rapley slotted home for Roff ey early in the second half and despite Mile Oak putting pressure on Roff ey held out for a good win.

The fi nancial results of this year’s festival have now been fi nalised and Horsham Cricket Club are delighted to announce that their share is just under £10,000 – a very healthy profi t resulting from much hard work by the club com-mittee, ground, offi ce and bar staff and a veritable army of volunteers.

Horsham President Hugh Thomas told the District Post: “It was one of the very best festivals with consist-ently high attendances and I’m so pleased that after the doubts over whether it would proceed because

of diffi culties in obtaining spon-sorship that we’ve returned to the profi t level of fi ve years ago.”

Festival organiser Barry Peay added: “It proves that given good weather and attractive opposition like we had this year with Warwick-shire and Notts we can produce a good outcome for the club and en-sure that Sussex will want to return. It also means that Horsham Cricket Club can continue to invest in top quality playing and practice facili-ties. It was great to hear the fulsome praise of the umpires and players about the wicket. Our groundsman Jim Askew won the Sussex Cricket League best pitch award and is now in the frame for the county out-ground prize to be announced later this month. Scarborough usually win that but we’d love to deny them this year!”

Sussex CEO Zac Toumazi and Chairman Jim May have told us

that the county loves coming to Horsham because the club always provides a friendly welcome and the date of next year’s festival and the fi xtures will soon be published. Horsham are very keen to host reigning county champions York-shire for the four day game – the only one of the 18 fi rst class coun-ties never to appear at Cricketfi eld Road. In next season’s Royal Lon-don one day cup Sussex will feature with Essex, Glamorgan, Hampshire, Kent, Lancashire, Middlesex, Not-tinghamshire and Warwickshire. Glamorgan have not visited Horsh-am for many years – Field Marshall Montgomery was on the ground the last time they came – but perhaps a local derby will bring in another bumper crowd. Full details of the 2015 festival fi xtures will appear in the District Post as soon as the in-formation is released by the Eng-land & Wales Cricket Board.

Saturday November 1 - FA Tro-phy 1st Qualifying RoundHorsham 1 - 0 Ware

Having signed a contract for the Hornets the week before the match it was fi tting that Tony Nwachukwu grabbed the only goal of the game, sending Horsham through to the second qualifying round.

Although Ware play at the same level as Horsham, Ware are in the Northern Division of the Ry-man League, they are on an i m p r e s s i v e run of form and sit sixth in their di-vision in contrast to Horsham’s third from bottom. This was therefore a decent result against good opposition that comes with the add-ed bonus of a welcome fi nancial boost.

It was not as straightforward as that as Ware pressed Horsham hard and the award to keeper Ga-reth Williams of Man of the Match showed that at times the big stop-per kept his side in the game.

As early as the fourth minute the visitors showed their intent when Albert Adu smashed a shot against the underside of the crossbar and Gary Charman, playing at centre back, blocked the follow up from Finbarr Robins

Despite the lion’s share of the early possession Ware failed to

score which allowed Horsham to get themselves back into the game. Harry Smith had an eff ort blocked from debutant Ade Akande’s cross, Charman headed over and Troy Wil-liams saw a shot fl y inches wide.

The half ended with a Charman free kick being well saved by Ware keeper Rhys Madden.

Five minutes into the second half an injury to Smith saw him replaced by Ryan Marriot and the impact was immediate. With his fi rst touch, Marriott fl oated a superb cross to the far post where Nwachukwu out jumped his marker to head into the net.

Ware almost struck back imme-diately when Josephs got away

from Charman and hit a low left-footed shot

that was saved at full stretch by

Williams. Wil-liams again came to the rescue when he produce a stunning f i n g e r t i p save to pre-vent a goal

bound de-fl ected shot

from Kieran Bishop.Former Hornets

youth and Horsham YMCA player Farzad Bidgood

came on for Troy Williams and imme-diately had an eff ort fl y just over the bar. At the other end Ware continued to spurn chances while Williams con-tinued his impressive display between the posts to keep the Hornets narrow lead, a lead they hung onto through the fi ve minutes of stoppage time and up to the fi nal whistle.

Horsham Team: Williams, Akande, King, Napper, Gilbert, Charman, Nwachukwu, Morley, Ampleford, Williams (Bidgood 70) Smith (Marriott 50) Unused Subs: Frankland, Varley, Hawthorne.

Hornets earn welcome win in FA Trophy

Saturday November 1 - SCFA RUR CupChichester City 1 - 3 Broad-bridge Heath

FootballDave Smith – Sports Editor

Heath made it through to the quarter-fi nal stage of the SCFA RUR Cup for the third year running with an extra-time victory over fellow Division One opponents Chichester City.

In a fi rst half that both sides had a number of chances Heath managed to convert one of theirs and went in with a narrow 1-0 lead.

The goal on 31 minutes came from a cross from the left by Merv Bhujun that Jamal Sultan met, took a touch before fi ring into the net from the

edge of the area.An error immediately after the

goal by Heath keeper Fisher should have given the home side an equal-iser but Julian Boniface’s eff ort lacked power and Fisher was able to recover and keep the ball out to send Heath in at the break in the lead.

Heath had the better of the play and the chances in the second half, Dan Attwater crashed a McDermott corner against the crossbar and Jack McNab headed just wide of the post.

However with 6 minutes left Chichester’s Boniface made up for his earlier miss by striking a low shot through a crowd of players to bring the teams level.

Five minutes into extra time in a near carbon copy of his fi rst goal, except it was a Max Love cross this time, Sultan struck again giving

Heath back the narrow lead. Now in the ascendancy Heath

took control and dominated the re-mainder of extra time and fully de-served their third goal when debu-tant Max Love got on the end of a through pass from Rob Godfrey, ran away from the defence and coolly slotted past the advancing keeper with style.

Manager Steve Painter was de-lighted with the result and with the performance of the young players drafted into the squad but Heath face a diffi cult task to reach the semi-fi nal with an away trip to ei-ther Haywards Heath or Eastbourne Town facing the Bears.

Heath Team: Fisher, Attwater (Butler 108) Robinson, Carruthers, Flack, McDermott, Godfrey, Sultan, Waddingham, McNab (Legrange 70) Bhujun (Love 80).
