The inquiry was scheduled to take place in Macclesfield on February 18 but campaigners, backed by Edward Timpson MP, have been calling for it to take place in Nantwich. The plans by Muller Homes concern an 1,100-home village, including business units, shops and a school, on land off Peter De Stapleigh Way. The initial planning applications for phase one – to build 189 of the homes and an access road – were taken to appeal after being rejected by Cheshire East Council. Pat Cullen, of the Protect Stapeley group, said: “I don’t think there’s anything sinister in the choice of venue but I know that Mr Timpson has written to the council asking for it to be changed. “I will be speaking at the inquiry on behalf of residents and I know the parish council will be making their own representations against the plans. “I can understand there is a demand for housing, as Nantwich is a nice place to live, but I don’t see that their is a ‘need’. “The fact is that developers have been taking advantage of a loophole in the rules as Cheshire East Council has not had a five year plan for building land.” • As we went to press the inquiry is scheduled to take place at Macclesfield Town Hall from 10am.

FAN: Ian with a club necklace made by Anastasia, and friend ErinDABBERS supporter Ian Garnett is officially the club’s numer one fan. Already Nantwich Town’s supporter of the year, Ian has just been named as one of the 10 finalists for the inaugural Evo-Stik League Supporter of the Year award. The 30-year-old joiner has given unstinting support to

the Dabbers, from helping set up the new supporters’ club and running the half-time raffle to constructing a hut for programme sellers. Ian said: “I love Nantwich Town Football Club and its fans. Supporting the club is a big part of my life and I’m always happy to help out in any way I can.”

A FIRE at the Pizza Parlour takeaway on Swine Market on January 21 is believed to have been an accident. Two fire engines from Crewe and one from Nantwich were called to the scene at 8.25am. It is thought the blaze

started in an extractor fan on the ground floor. Four firefighters wearing breathing apparatus used hose reel jets to fight the fire and a covering jet was also set up to stop it spreading to other businesses.

Number one fanA NANTWICH cheese manufacturer has been fined for safety failings. The fine comes after a worker injured his leg when he fell from the forks of a forklift truck. Joseph Heler Ltd was prosecuted by the Health and Safety Executive following the incident at its plant on Crewe Road on July 4 2012. Chester Magistrates heard that the injured worker, a 53-year-old from Crewe, had been helping to load cheese onto a wagon for delivery. He was being lifted up to the wagon, with one foot on each prong on the forklift, when the forks hit the back of the vehicle and jolted. He fell around a metre to the ground, suffering cuts to his

left leg and multiple fractures to his ankle. A HSE investigation found it had become common practice for people to be lifted on forklift prongs. Despite this being illegal, the company had failed to identify

it as an issue. The court was told that no risk assessment had been carried out

for the work and no other method for accessing the wagons was available. The firm has since provided steps to reach the back of the vehicles. The firm was fined £8,000 and ordered to pay £709 costs after admitting to the breach. HSE Inspector Jane Carroll said: “The injuries suffered by the worker could easily have been life-threatening had he struck his head when he fell.”

ORGANISERS of this year’s Holly Holy Day event have praised the resilience Nantwich people. Visitors braved the elements as a vicious hail storm hit the town during the climax of the day’s festivities. Organiser Shaun Cafferty told us: “The morning had been bright and sunny and the town was exceptionally busy. “I am told the car parks were filled to overflowing, including the extra facility at the football ground, and there was a fantastic atmosphere. “But the weather deteriorated sharply with

thunder and lightning accompanying the prayers for the battle dead, and a violent hail storm driving even some of the soldiers for cover during the traditional wreath laying and musket volley. “It wasn’t pleasant, but it was very dramatic! “After standing in the mud watching an hour’s fighting, most of the 800 or so crowd, cold and drenched to the skin, stayed behind in pouring rain to impeccably observe the minute’s silence and to show their appreciation for the soldiers’ efforts in terrible conditions.” (pic by Jonathan White)

TWO South Cheshire businesses have raised thousands of pounds for St Luke’s Hospice. After taking the heat in the kitchen by cooking a four-course dinner for 62 guests, Andrew Hague from Howard Worth and Scott Harding of Poole Alcock were thrilled that their culinary efforts raised more than £3,500 for the charity. The ‘Come Dine With Us’ style event was held at the Residence Restaurant in Nantwich.

FATHER Christmas helped the Rotary Club of Nantwich raise some £4,500 for good causes over the festive period. Club president Ashley Weaver said: “As ever we would like to thank the people of Nantwich for their extraordinary generosity. “Several smiles and cheery welcomes kept us going over 300 man hours of collecting, while visiting more than 3,000 homes on over 15 miles of Nantwich streets.”

NANTWICH Methodist Church has launched a new a community cinema project. Nantwich Family Films @ 4, was officially opened by local MP Edward Timpson. Films will be screened on the third Sunday of each month at 4pm, with doors opening at 3.45pm. Mr Timpson, who brought his son along to the launch, said: “As a parent of young children myself I know all too well the pressures to keep them occupied each and every weekend. “This community cinema will be of great benefit to many families living in Nantwich who currently have to travel some distance to catch a film. “Congratulations to Geoff Etherton and his team at Nantwich Methodist Church on getting this excellent project up and running.” Family tickets, which cover up to two adults and four children are £10 and individual tickets cost £3. The next film to be shown will be Despicable Me 2 on February 16.

WELCOME RETURNDabbers defender Mat Bailey is back at the club

DABBERS boss Danny Johnson said he is delighted to welcome back Mat Bailey. It is hoped that the giant defender will help to bolster the Dabbers’ defence as the club looks to extend a decent set of results. The former Crewe Alex man returns to the club on a permanent basis after a difficult spell at Telford. Manager Danny Johnson, (pictured with Bailey) said: “I’m delighted that Mat has decided to commit his immediate future to Nantwich Town, as he is a magnificent player with great experience and just what we need at this stage of the season. “We are on a good run of results in the league at present and the lads are working extremely hard to build on their recent performances and we want to finish as high as we possibly can in the league. “Adam Jones had done a fantastic job at centre half for us whilst on loan, but once he was recalled by FC United, there was only one player I

wanted to fill that void. “Mat wants to play regular football and obviously has such a passion and love for Nantwich Town Football Club that we were able to agree terms for him to join us permanently.” Nantwich Town will now visit FC United of Manchester

on Tuesday February 18 after last month’s game at Gigg Lane was postponed due to a waterlogged pitch. And the league has brought forward Nantwich’s trip to Frickley Athletic. The Dabbers will now make the trip to South Elmsall on Saturday February 22.
