Dear People of Saint Anne,

Over the last few weeks, we have all been basking in the afterglow of the celebrations of Holy Week and Easter. I have received so many comments and communications from parishioners offering their gratitude for the wonderful cel-ebrations of the most significant tenets of our Christian Catholic faith. Each year, the celebrations exceed my own hopes and expectations. It was truly exhilarating and moving to see the large numbers of people who journeyed through our Holy Week and Easter celebrations.

In your name and in mine, I offer our thanks to all who devoted so many hours of their time and service to make all of our celebrations marked by elegance and dignity. Georgene Farman, the Mass coordinators, ushers and greeters organized the many details behind the scenes that we can sometimes take for granted: practices with servers and ministers of the liturgy, the layout of the liturgical scripts, the setup of all liturgical vessels for each liturgy and the coordination and welcome of the large crowds that we had for these celebrations. Rory Cooney and our music ministers were nothing short of magnificent. Karyl Schu-bel and Karen Cook, along with our Art and Environ-ment Committee, worked tirelessly in preparing our church and chapel in such beauty and splendor. Our altar servers, lectors and communion ministers offered their time and presence in carrying out their roles, and our par-ish priests prepared, presided and preached with such grace.

At the Easter Vigil Liturgy, we baptized and confirmed 3 new Catholics and welcomed and confirmed 4 new mem-bers into the church. Sister Anna Marie (coordinating her 30th RCIA group at Saint Anne), Sister Lauretta and the RCIA team prepared the men and women over the last year, meeting with them weekly, to ensure that they were properly catechized and prepared for the Easter Vigil. The wonderful community that the RCIA team creates with our newest members over the course of given year is marked by friendship, warmth, trust and faith-filled witness. They represent us in their ministry – the welcoming of the larger faith community of Saint Anne – and we are grateful for the way in which they do so.

I continue to hear so many positive comments about the visit of Nuestros Pequenos Hermanos. NPH, as you know, was the focus of our almsgiving at Saint Anne this Lent. The visit of these young adults from Guatemala was so

enriching for them, along with the thoughtful and gener-ous families who hosted them in their homes, and all of us who were graced by their music ministry at all the Masses that weekend. Through your donations and sponsorships, NPH realized close to $50,000.00 to assist them in their ministry and outreach at the orphanage in Guatemala. May God bless you in your goodness and generosity to this important ministry and mission. Many thanks to Paul and Adrienne Kalmes who coordinated this effort and our Young Marrieds Ministry Group for preparing the Satur-day evening fiesta.

In my homily last Sunday, I mentioned that Pope Francis has inaugurated an upcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy, call-ing on God’s People the Church to refashion ourselves into a people of pardon, forgiveness and merciful love. The Holy Father states that the church’s very credibility is seen in how we show mercy and compassionate love. I close my letter this week with an excerpt of the Pope’s declara-tion:

In this Holy Year, we look forward to the experience of opening our hearts to those living on the outermost fringes of society … How many uncertain and painful situations there are in the world today! How many are the wounds borne by the flesh of those who have no voice because their cry is muffled out by in-difference … During this Jubilee, the Church will be called even more to heal these wounds, to assuage them with the oil of conso-lation, to bind them with mercy and cure them with solidarity and vigilant care … Let us open our eyes and see the misery of the world, the wounds of our brothers and sisters who are denied their dignity, and let us recognize that we are compelled to heed their cry for help. May we reach out to them and support them so they can feel the warmth of our presence, our friendship and fraternity. May their cry become our own, and together may we break down the barriers of indifference that too often reign su-preme and mask our hypocrisy and egoism! + Francis

Jesus has shown us the way to transform the world. As we experience the love and mercy that God pours forth on us, let us pray that everyone of us, like Pope Francis, will com-mit ourselves more fully to bring the joy and mercy of the Gospel into our everyday life – in our homes, families, neighborhoods, in our village and in the world … bringing the mercy and joy of the Gospel that we experience be-cause Jesus loves us and gave his very life for us.

Continued Easter Blessings, Father Bernie Pietrzak

WOMEN’S CLUB MOTHER-DAUGHTER EVENT FEATURES BALLET, TEA AND FAIRIES

Thane Hall was transformed into a ballet stage, a tea party and a fairy garden factory on Saturday, April 11th! Mothers, grandmothers, aunts, special friends and the young ladies in their lives were first treat-ed to a ballet performance by Mackenzie Jaekel of the Barrington Youth Dance Ensemble. Jaekel, who will portray Sleeping Beauty at a performance in June, performed a dance from the ballet, fielded questions and posed for photos with budding ballerinas. Then, it was time to feast on tea sandwiches and petit fours with a variety of fillings as well as fresh fruit from a teapot-shaped watermelon!

Once tummies were full, the mothers and daughters helped each other assemble and arrange fairy gar-dens using a variety of pixie-sized supplies. The girls had lots of fun creating the perfect home for their fairy friend. Barrington will become known to fairies everywhere as a very hospitable place to live! Spe-cial thanks to Margaret Lortie, Mary McKenna, Cathy Sisto and Sara Roach for organizing the event.

SAINT ANNE PARISH SCHOOL NEWS

Faith Formation and Education

SAS FIFTH GRADERS ARE OUT OF THIS WORLD!!!!!! Saint Anne Parish School Fifth Graders rendezvoused with a comet!

This mission was a complete success as students performed hands-on science experiments and team build-ing activities in order to conclude their mission successfully. Students had the opportunity to participate in a simulated space mission located at the Challenger Learning Center in Woodstock. The Challenger Learning Center is a STEM education facility that integrates Science, Technology, Engineering and Math into a real world simulation. Our 5th graders used inquiry-based tactics within our curriculum that en-couraged them to explore and thus be inspired about our Space programs.

Our students worked on one of eight teams including: Communications, Data, Navigation, Medical, Re-mote, Life Support, Isolation and Probe. They moved through both the simulated Spacecraft and Mission Control as they attempted to launch a probe through the comet. These inquisitive and enterprising stu-dents had to work as a team in order for their mission to be successful. The unknown comets that have been discovered are now known as Lyjak24 and Feit22! The entire class said the experience was challeng-ing and fun! A once-in-a-lifetime experience!

We would love for you to visit our preschool! We offer many different sessions with a nurturing environment and small class sizes.

By Clem Aseron Sharing the Living Story (A) Lectionary texts: http://www.usccb.org/bible/readings/041915.cfm (B) Bible texts (has verse #): http://www.usccb.org/bible/books-of-the-bible/index.cfm

THIRD SUNDAY OF EASTER, 2015 (47B) 1st Reading: Acts 3:13-15, 17-19

Psalm 4:2, 4, 7-8, 9. RX =Lord, let your face shine on us. 2nd Reading: 1 John 2:1-5a

Gospel: Luke 24:35-48

Please refer to (A) and (B) above when I cite verses in the commentary below.

Selections from John’s gospel are used for the

Fourth Scripture throughout the eight Sundays of

Easter; except for today! Using Luke for today is

as though we need yet another story, from yet

another source, to convince us during this time of

mystagogy.1 Taken from the closing words of

Luke’s gospel, today’s post-resurrection story is

remindful of last Sunday; it relates the very last

appearance of Jesus to the eleven and others with

them but also serves as a bridge to Luke’s second

book, the Acts of the Apostles, from which the

First Scripture is taken for all the Sundays from

Easter to Pentecost.

Writing some time in 60-80 C.E., Luke apparently

had a problem in proving to his own community

that the Jesus whom he reports as having called

the disciples to go forth and preach to all the na-

tions (v.47) was neither ghost nor one who was

simply resuscitated. Luke dispels the ghost idea

right away; he reports Jesus saying to the terri-

fied: Look at my hands and my feet, that it is I

myself. Touch me and see, because a ghost does not

have flesh and bones as you can see I have.2 They are

joyful but still disbelieving; Luke’s Jesus contin-

ues: Have you anything here to eat? They gave

him a piece of baked fish; he took it and ate it in front

of them. Now they become convinced that Jesus is

physically real. At verse 35, Luke emphasizes

that Jesus will be recognized at fellowship meals;

it is in the breaking of the bread – the body bro-

ken and the blood poured out – that they (we)

understand, that they (we) “see”, that they (we)

know, the Lord. More, in the very telling of the

story they (we) come to see: ... he opened their

minds to understand the scriptures. Luke explains:

Jesus reminds them of how his words and the

words of scripture serve to interpret the events of

the past few days (mystagogy!). Luke builds the

story carefully: the empty tomb account showed

that Jesus’ prophecy of his passion reached fulfill-

ment; in the Emmaus story (vv. 13-35), we are

taught that Moses and the prophets had foretold

the suffering and resurrection of Jesus. And now,

Page 13: The Clarion - St Anne's Catholic Churchstannebarrington.org › wp-content › uploads › 2015 › 04 › ... · has inaugurated an upcoming Jubilee Year of Mercy, call-ing on God’s

Saint Anne Church • April 19, 2015 • stannebarrington.org 13

Sharing the Living Story we learn that it is the risen Jesus who interprets

the Law, the Prophets and the Psalms.3

At verses 47 and 48, the Lectionary4 points us to-

ward the Ascension at vv 50-51). Jesus’ followers

are to proclaim that repentance, for the for-

giveness of sins, would be preached in his name to all

the nations,5 beginning from Jerusalem. Now it is

inclusive of all; none is to be at a distance, all are

to be gathered around God; more, they (we) are

to be witnesses of these things about Jesus.6 Jesus’

commissioning of them will be emphasized in the

gospel for the Ascension, (but compare vv. 49-

53). Today, Luke is saying that this not simply

the Jesus they knew from before, but he is the

Risen One, the One who will empower them with

the Spirit and send them forth to witness to those

beyond the confines of their immediate commu-

nity.

The Psalm refrain pleads:

Lord, let your face shine on us.

So What? It is too tempting to stay either with the historical

(what did Jesus say and do when he was on the earth?) or to stay with the story told to the community by its evangelist.7

But how do these stories rest upon us today?

For example, how does our heart respond when we recognize the Lord in body broken and blood poured out?

Lord, let your face shine on us.

1 Mystagogy: the period from the Easter Vigil until Pentecost during which we celebrate our new life in Christ. It is a life on which we intently focus each year when we see the Elect baptized at the Easter Vigil and we hear ourselves repeating the very words used with our name at our own baptism. It is a period of extended focus on how the Jesus who is The Lord, who is the Risen One, who is The Christ, the one who appeared to the community after the resurrection, is also present to us. It is not so much the Jesus of history but the Jesus of faith; it is the Jesus who sustains us and commissions us to go forth to give witness; it is the Jesus who empowers us and remains with us until the end of time. 2 Note that unlike John, Luke makes no mention of nails. Luke does not even speak of nails in his version of the crucifixion. 3 Verse 44 4 The Church’s book of bible verses selected for every Mass 5 all the nations, not just the Chosen People, but to the pagans, the gentiles, as well 6 Not in the sense of eyewitness but in the sense of giving testimony 7 The Gospel writers, Matthew, Mark, Luke or John

Ensuring PEACE ~ Ending Domestic Violence

FOUR WARNING SIGNS TO BE AWARE OF TO DETERMINE IF YOU ARE INVOLVED

IN AN ABUSIVE OR UNHEALTHY RELATIONSHIP:

TOO GOOD TO BE TRUE: Has your partner become totally preoccupied with you such as calling every hour ‘just to hear your voice’? Or driving you to and from your job, doing things you were doing for yourself? Taking charge of your life?

TEMPER OUTBURSTS: Does your partner have outbursts of temper, cussing, throwing things or kicking doors not directed at you but towards anybody or anything?

RAGE FOR PAST RELATIONSHIPS: Does your partner talk about prior dates, and is there rage in his/her anger regarding your previous relationships?

CHECKING AND TRACKING: Does your partner keep track of where you went, who you met and how much time you spent somewhere else?

If you answered YES to one or more of these questions, you or someone you know may be a victim of domestic violence.

PLEASE CALL:

• Mary Hoffing, Human Concerns, 847.382.2148 • 24 Hr. Domestic Violence Hotline, 847.697.2380 • Emergencies, 911

Saint Anne will assist through referral and by offering spiritual, emotional and practical support, as possible.

Sacraments We believe that the celebration of the sacraments ranks among the most important gifts that we have. We look forward to sharing these celebrations with those who, in some way, are part of our community. Therefore, please note the following:

Visitation of the Sick: If you or a family member are in a local hospital or are homebound and would like a visit from a minister of care or a priest, call Mary Hoffing at 847.382.2148.

Baptism: Our Baptism ministry is pleased to help your family prepare for the special event of your child’s entrance into our faith community.

• Two Baptism sessions are required for parents baptizing their 1st child

• Parents who have had a Baptism at another Catholic Church and are now wanting to baptize a child at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

• Parents who have already attended Baptism preparation at Saint Anne will be asked to speak to a staff member before scheduling Baptism

Information for setting a Baptism date will be given at the meeting or at the time of the interview. Please call the parish office at 847.382.5300 where all scheduling is done.

Marriage: To be married at Saint Anne, your preparation process should begin 7 months to one year prior to your wedding date. Please call the parish office to secure a date as soon as possible. Membership at Saint Anne is not a requirement. We look forward to helping you during this time of engagement and preparation for the vocation of Christian marriage.

First Eucharist and First Reconciliation: These sacraments are typically celebrated in second grade. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call the GIFT office at 847.620.3067 with questions.

Confirmation: This sacrament is celebrated in high school. Candidates must be registered parishioners and complete the two-year preparation program. Please call 847.620.3072.

Reconciliation: Saturdays ₉:₁₅ a.m. until all are heard or by appointment.

Registration: To enter into our faith community, please attend an information/registration session at 9:30 a.m. in the Hospitality Room, followed by the 11:00 a.m. Mass on the 1st Sunday of the month, except on holiday weekends when there are no sessions. For further information, call the Rectory office at 847.382.5300.
