Chapter 12

Internet Services

The Internet is a world-wide system of interconnected computer network that uses

set of network protocols (rules) to reach billions of users. In 1969 the U.S. Defense

Department set ARPA-Advanced Research Project Agency. They design a network

of four computers to share data, called as ARPANET. These was the beginning of

‘Networking of Computers’ which grew bigger day by day and gave birth to

INTERNET. Firstly it was used by Engineers, Scientist and Computer experts for

research purposes, gradually the network was made available to private agencies

and public sector.

In India Internet Services started on 15th August 1995. Some of the popular

Internet Service Providers in India are BSNL, Airtel, Relience, Idea, Tata etc.

Popular Services On the Internet are as follows:

1) WWW:- World Wide Web was invented by Tim Berners-Lee in the year

1989. WWW is the part of Internet that contains websites and web pages.

Each web page contains text, graphics, audio/video and links to other web

pages.

WWW is based on Client-Server model. Clients ( computer device or

software) make a request for a web page and Server fulfill those requests.

They use certain set of rules for this called HTTP (Hyper Text Transfer

Protocol).

2) Chatting:- Chatting is an online conversation over the Internet. One can

chat through a site, chat room or instant messenger like Viber, Whatapp,

Skype etc. You can send text messages as well video chat also. You have to

install and register yourself with an account.

3) Video Conferencing:- As the name suggest, it is a visual connection

between two or more people residing in separate locations for the purpose

of communication. In this we can do face to face conversation. This

technology is mainly used for virtual meeting among group of people (not

present physically at the same place). E.g. News Channels.

4) E-Commerce:- Electronic Commerce means business of buying and selling

things over the Internet. It offers us to shop 24x7 from the comfort of our

home. We can compare products on different sites before buying. We can

buy as well as sell goods.

Some popular sites which offers online shopping are as follows:

www.myntra.com

www.jabong.com

www.snapdeal.com etc.

5) E-Learning:- Electronic Learning enables people to learn anytime and

anywhere. Internet act as a global library for us. The study material can

contain various types of media like text, audio, video, animations. There is

no limitations of time distance and resources.

In the present scenario you can take yourself as an example of E-learning.

6) E-banking:- Electronic banking is used to do online bank transactions

through Internet. With E-banking you can transfer money to any one’s

account, can make FDs, apply for loans etc. These transaction can be done

from any part of the world, only you need a registered online account and

internet connection.

7) Internet free calls:- You can do voice and video call to anyone using

internet connection. You need to install particular software. For example if

you are using Skype or Whatsapp, these should be installed in the devices at

both ends (to whom you are calling). You must have an account of these

also. Some software which allows you to send free messages, and videos

along with free internet calls, are as follows:

Skype, Viber, Whatsapp, Google Duo, Tango etc.

8) E-Mail:- electronic mail is a process of sending and receiving text based

messages over the Internet. You must have an e-mail address in order to

access e-mails. You can send files, images as an attachments through a

network to a specified individual or group of individuals.

It consists of two parts:

1) User name

2) Domain name

e.g. [email protected]

To use e-mail facility on the Internet, one has to create a personal account by

specifying a user name, password along with some information like their

name, date of birth, address, qualification etc.

Features of E-mail:-

Compose:- to write mail.

Send:- to send e-mail to the recipient, you can send same e-mail to number

of people by using their e-mail addresses separated by commas.

Attachments:- to attach a file a paper clip icon is there at the bottom of

compose window, click on that. Open dialogue box will open, select the file

and click on open button.

Reply:- Reply is used to reply a received e-mail.

Forward: to send any received e-mail to other e-mail address.

Signature:- it automatically inserted at the bottom of every sent e-mail.

Sign out:-to come out of e-mail account.
