Scripture Insights

The promises of God are for everyone. That may seem obvious to many of us, but it was an in-sight the early Christians had to struggle with. Even during Jesus’ ministry, the disciples were not ready to believe that God’s Chosen One, the Messiah, had come to EVERYONE to invite them into God’s Kingdom. When a foreign woman reached out to Jesus for help, Jesus tested the bystanders by quoting a fa-miliar proverb: “It is not right to take the food of the children and throw it to the dogs.” But then when Jesus healed the woman’s daughter anyway, he not only surprised a lot of self-righteous people, he began something that would eventually blossom into a worldwide mission to the Gen-tiles. In the Church that Jesus founded, being a child of God is no longer dependent on being born into a particular group of people. It is available to everyone, as God said through the prophet Isaiah: “My house shall be called a house of prayer for ALL people.” Therefore, a major part of Jesus’ ministry was to break down the cultural barriers that divided people and encourage a new way of looking at people, especially those who were outcasts in that society. Jesus talked to foreigners, ate with tax collectors, forgave sinners, and even touched lepers! For him, holiness is not in the exterior things, but in the person’s heart, and the Kingdom of Heaven is open to all who will turn their hearts toward it. As Christians, followers of this same Jesus, we are really brothers and sisters by choice, not by chance. But this also means we have to resist the temptation to look at anyone as an “outsider.” _____________________________________________________________________________

Covid 19 Precautions

We are most grateful to all who have been so patient and cooperative with the guidelines and re-strictions currently in place dealing with the Covid-19 pandemic. As of this writing, there has been no communication from the Bishop’s Office regarding increasing capacity or lifting any of the guidelines that are now in place. And so, we ask that you please continue to help us all by fol-lowing these rules: + Face masks must be worn in the church building at all times. + Practice social distancing as we enter, during the Communion procession, and as we exit the church. + Holy Communion must be received in the hand. Please wear your mask as you receive, step aside after you receive, pull down your mask, and consume the Host. + “Reservations” for weekend Masses must be made for safe capacity and tracing measures. You may do this by calling the parish office, Wednesday-Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m., at this number: 508-673-3022. You may also sign-up online by visiting our parish webpages or our Facebook page.

Your help and cooperation are very much appreciated!

Venerable Michael J. McGivney Looking for a saint in these Covid-19 troubled times? Look no further than Venerable Fr. Michael McGivney, founder of the Knights of Columbus, and a New England native, born in Connecticut in 1852, and who served as a parish priest in the Archdiocese of Hartford. McGivney is to be beatified this Fall in Hart-ford. The coronavirus pandemic has turned our lives upside down and taken away some securities upon which our society was based. In these difficult times, many are looking for help to make sense of it all. The time-honored Catholic tradition of invoking men and women of proven holiness to intercede with God for us offers one path toward peace and a deeper faith in God. With that in mind, perhaps Venerable Father Michael McGivney is a good option. The American priest died from pneumonia in 1890 during what some in the sci-entific community now say was likely a coronavirus pandemic. Some 1 million people died in that outbreak. Pope Francis recently recognized a miracle attributed to Fr. McGivney, clearing the way for his beatification. Fr. McGivney founded the Knights of Columbus, a fraternal service organization of Catholic laymen. In an interview with Vatican News, Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said the recognition of the miracle comes at a propitious time for the Church. Fr. McGivney “suffered and died like so many Americans and other peo-ple around the world,” he said. “So, when we say now ‘Fr. McGivney, pray for us’, we are going to have somebody who has been there and been through this suffering. I think his prayers will be very personal.” Mr. Anderson said Fr. McGivney’s upcoming beatification “confirms what we thought about his saintly life and his inspiration for millions of men for more than a century.” From humble beginnings in 1882 in a parish in New Haven, Connecticut, the Knights of Columbus now count over 16,000 councils in countries through-out the world. Knights from the United States, the Philippines, Mexico, Canada, France, Poland, Ukraine, and Korea can look to their organization’s founder with confidence in his saintly example. “Almost every day we have a deepening of our understanding of what it means to live a life of unity and fraternity, and we added the principle of patriotism, which was important to Fr. McGivney,” said Mr. Anderson. Citing Pope Francis’ frequent call for a more “fraternal” society, the Supreme Knight said the soon-to-be Blessed had a similar approach to charity. “It’s not just about writing a bigger check or putting a few more dollars or euro in the collection plate,” he said. “It’s about looking at your neighbor as a brother or a sister, and when they are in difficulty, to help them out.” Throughout history, great religious orders have arisen to meet a need within the Church. “What about the Catholic layman?” wondered Mr. Anderson. “What about the man who can’t take a vow of poverty because he is married, has a family, and has to work in the world and support his family?” Fr. Michael McGivney, he said, offers the Catholic layman a fraternal community where he “can meet other men who consider them-selves to be brothers, who will help each other, who are concerned for each other, and can also have a certain spiritual life together.” Supreme Knight Carl Anderson said this is the key to the success of the Knights of Columbus.
