CONGRATULATIONS, SISTER KATHEE! This Thursday, January 28, our pastoral associate, Sister Kathee Corrigan, will mark the 25th anniversary of her entrance in to the Holy Union Sisters. Kathee, the daughter of Jeanne (Cooney) Corrigan, was born and raised in Brooklyn, New York. Her older broth-er, Sean, is deceased, and her younger sister, Eileen, now lives on Long Island with her family, and Kathee’s mom. Kathee’s uncle, her mother’s twin brother, Msgr. James Cooney, served for over 50 years as a priest of the Diocese of Brooklyn. Kathee first met the Holy Union Sisters through the then vocation director, Sister Margaret Kernan (one of Fr. Dave’s high school teachers). She was drawn to Holy Union because of the great variety of ministries the Sisters are involved in. During her initial months with the Sisters, Kathee lived with them in their New York City con-vents in Manhattan (96th Street) and Queens (Long Island City, Astoria) while continuing to work at the Wall Street headquarters of the investment firm, Goldman Sachs, serving as the maître’d of the executive dining room. Two years of novitiate (formation) took place at St. Coleman’s Convent in Brockton, MA. During this time Kathee participated in the Boston area inter community formation program and finished studies at Emmanuel Col-lege (B.A in Fine Arts and Religious Studies). Following her first profession of vows, Kathee became the director of the Holy Union house of hospitality at Nanaquakett Road in Tiverton, RI. Her many years of experience at Goldman Sachs came in handy as Kathee served various retreat and conference groups, providing a warm and welcoming space, managing all aspects of the house from landscaping to menus and bookkeeping to house cleaning. When Nanaquakett was closed, the Holy Union Sisters sent Kathee back to school to complete her graduate de-gree in pastoral ministry at Chicago Theological Union. After two years, she returned to New England and began ministering as pastoral associate at Saint Mary, Sacred Heart, and Saint Mark parishes in North Attleboro. In this role, Kathee worked with those grieving the loss of loved ones, served as spiritual director for the Women’s Guild, assisted with faith formation of all ages, was very active with liturgical ministries, and was a member of the St. Mary-Sacred Heart School Board. In August of 2018, her fellow Sisters elected Kathee to serve for a four year term as a member of the leadership team of the United States Province. Working with two other sisters, Kathee helps care for the 56 members of the province who serve in Massachusetts, Rhode Island, New York, Maryland, Kentucky, and Rome, Italy. This work involves pastoral ministry, health care, finances, transportation, communication, and long range planning. When Fr. Costa was assigned to the Somerset/Swansea Catholic Community in June of 2019, he asked Sister Kathee to join him as part-time pastoral associate. Kathee enthusiastically agreed, moving her residence to Saint Patrick Rectory. The people of our community have welcomed Kathee (and the entire pastoral team) most warm-ly. Balancing multiple duties, Kathee gives “her all,” with sincerity, thoughtfulness, and love. Her common sense, mixed with good humor and creativity, help round-out our team. Kathee is most grateful for the support and assistance so many in our community offer each day and is very happy to be able to call Somerset/Swansea her home. We are blessed with the presence and ministry of Sister Kathee. A more joyous, public celebration of this “Silver Jubilee” is planned for post-Covid days. Until then, we thank God for the gift of Kathee and ask God to bless her with good health, deep faith, and much happiness!

THANK YOU TO NELSON CARPENTIER, St. Louis de France, St. Vincent de Paul group

Many thanks! After serving for more than 25 years, Nelson Carpen-tier is retiring from faithful and faith-filled active membership and leadership in the Saint Louis de France Conference of the Saint Vincent de Paul Socie-ty. With characteristic gentleness, compassion, and hard-work, Nelson has given generously of his time, talent, and treasure to care for God’s people. On behalf of the thousands of needy men, women, and children he has served, your colleagues in the parish, district, and dioc-esan conferences, and your fellow parishioners, I thank you, Nelson, for your dedication, generosity, and ser-vice. You are a faithful disciple of Jesus, a man of ac-tion, following in the footsteps of Blessed Frederick Ozanamm, founder of the international Saint Vincent de Paul Society. May your “retirement” from this ac-tive ministry be blessed with good health and days of rest and relaxation. You certainly deserve it!

THIRD SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

Creativity Prize-winning novelist Toni Morrison once told an interviewer that raising children nourished her creativity. The interviewer was startled. Surely, he thought, spending time with helpless infants, needy children, unsure adoles-cents would squelch creativity and occupy the time Morrison could spend instead at her desk creating yet another novel. But no, her children knew her as mother, as the creator and sustainer of their lives. They brought out the best in her. They freed her so that she could create even more. F R : Jonah 3:1–5, 10 R P : Psalm 25:4–5, 6–7, 8–9 S R : 1 Corinthians 7:29–31 G : Mark 1:14–20 Comment The readings from Jonah and the Gospel describe instantaneous and positive responses. Jonah is give the task of preaching conversion to hitherto unrepentant Nineveh. The demand for repentance barely leaves Jonah’s lips, and the city rises up to obey. The people repent in sackcloth and ashes. In the Gospel for this day, Jesus is walking the shores of the Sea of Galilee. Not once, but twice, he encounters a set of brothers, who abandon their nets at Jesus’ call. Such spontaneous and obedient responses appear rarely. And today we get two such incidents in a row. We must not miss the point. God expects such a response from us. This is our chance, our big chance. God knows this, and if we are not too dull of spirit, we know it, too. God’s call is Good News that we can seize. This may imply surrendering the bad news of our easy and trivializing hab-its, not someday or tomorrow, but right now. Making such a response to God’s offer of Good News calls for faith, yes, but more than that, it calls for freedom. God’s call invites our free response. That is why Paul summons us in the second reading to travel light, to lead lives unburdened of those things that threaten to drag us down and keep us there. It would be drawing the wrong conclusion to infer that Paul is denigrating marriage or any other human good. Rather, he is simply calling atten-tion to the fact that responding to Christ’s summons means achieving a perspective that focuses the stuff of hu-man life toward God. Reflection We know, of course, that the people of Nineveh responded immediately, but alas! Jonah didn’t. He dragged his anchor, for sure. He had to be tossed overboard and coughed up on shore before he finally got himself turned around in the direction that led to the fulfillment of his prophetic mission—the conversion of the willing and plia-ble people of Nineveh. Mark’s account of the call of the disciples shows them accepting their mission instantly. The disciples abandon their old way without a second thought. Imagine yourself leaving your workplace at the drop of the hat without announcement or future plan or further thought. People who knew you well would search for a reason, a deep mo-tivation. Jesus’ call to the disciples touched their deeper sense, stirred something in the very soul of Israel and of its faithful people. The disciples recognized the one truth that was meant for them. This was the promised one of God and they were on their way. They discovered in him the freedom of the sons and daughters of God. In this new undertaking they were finally free. Not merely free from fish and fishing, but free to serve the Lord in a new and undreamed of, but wished for, way. Paul describes this sort of freedom in acceptance of the Lord’s mission. He tells us that people who take up the mission of Jesus Christ must be free from the day-to-day worries that can drain the life out of a person. As we have noted, the person of mission—the Christian—is not called to detach himself or herself from the world, from family, from relationships. Rather, the Christian must involve himself or herself in these very worries and concerns so that they can be shaped and managed to serve the work of Christ on this great old joyful and painful earth. Christians are called to use all the tools at hand. Only then will the Chris-tian be free, and only then can he or she help in the work of freeing others and helping them see and experience the presence of God, not by transcending this world, but by creatively taking it on.
