Help save a life today and improve your health!

Did you know that donors reduce their risk of heart disease and cancer? According to studies published in the American Journal of Epidemiology, blood donors are 88% less likely to suffer a heart attack and 33% less likely to suffer any type of cardiovascular event.

Reduces Risk of Heart Disease - Regular blood donations help to keep the levels of iron in the body in check, especially in males. Excessive iron build up can result in excessive oxidative damage. Oxidative damage is the major culprit implicated in accelerated ageing, heart attacks, strokes etc. Iron has a significant impact on atherosclerosis, or hardening of the arteries. When you give blood you are removing 225 to 250 milligrams of iron from your system, thus cutting your risk of heart disease. Once a woman goes through menopause her risk of heart attack increases, but donating blood can reduce that risk.

Reduces the Risk of Cancer - Americans tend to consume large quantities of iron which can promote formation of free radicals in the body. Free radicals can cause cellular changes which can disrupt normal cell function and increase the risk of certain chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer.

SPIRITUALITY

CHRISTIAN FELLOWSHIP

Wednesday, June 4, 2014

6:30pm - The Gulden Community Center

Program: Cincinnati Association for the Blind and

Visually Impaired

Speaker: Vicki Lorenz

Vicki Lorenz is the School Age Services Coordinator with the Cincinnati Association for

the Blind and Visually Impaired. She will be speaking about the services offered at CABVI

for children and how she is able to help students and parents navigate the sometime

difficult path toward special education services.

I find myself sitting in the office here at Twin Towers surrounded by the cards so many of

you sent to give me encouragement in the days following the passing of my son Mark. It

feels so good to realize the amount of support and gracious love poured out here on this

campus. So many of you truly understand where Carolyn and I are these days because

you too have walked this same ground. So allow me to share two great truths from the

scriptures I am hanging on to these days.

Truth One: There is nothing that will ever touch me in this life or in the next that has not

already passed through the loving hands of my Heavenly Father, NOTHING. I am hanging

my spiritual hat on Exodus 19:4 “You yourselves have seen what I did in Egypt, how I

carried you on eagles wings and brought you to myself.” I admit I will never get a

satisfactory answer to my “why?” question but my pain is not an accident; God was not

shocked when Mark showed up in Heaven’s glory at 34. God walks this trail with me, with

us: what touches us touches Him first.

Truth Two: Every day God is continuing to shape me into the image of His Son. He is

committed to doing that. Even the painful experiences of my life, our lives, has a place in

that shaping. When I left the Army and went to seminary I did not have any idea where

God was going to put me; the call was a call to prepare. I realize today that at times the

preparation lesson comes to us…we cannot handle this; our resources are not enough,

our own sufficiency will not get us through, turning to the great provider is our only

recourse. II Corinthians 1: 3-7 tells us that as the sufferings of Christ flow over into our

lives so also through Christ our comfort overflows. Overflows means “more than

enough.”

Thanks so much for being God’s arms of love, feet of service, and prayer partners for me

and for my family.

Living in Hope and surrounded by Love

Chaplain Joe

VOLUNTEER

There is a story about people: Everybody, Somebody, Anybody and Nobody. There

was an important job to be done and Everybody was asked to do it. Everybody was sure

Somebody would do it, but Nobody did it. Anybody could have done it, but Nobody did

it. Somebody got angry about that because it was Everybody’s job. Everybody thought

Anybody could do it. Nobody realized Everybody wouldn’t do it. In the end, Everybody

blamed Somebody when actually Nobody asked Anybody.

The volunteers of Twin Towers are a blessing and “Everybody” helps in providing

exceptional experiences everyday for our residents and associates! Last month we

celebrated with 89 volunteers from 2013 who served their time and talents to a simple

brunch and moment of thanks and gratitude!

… Back to our story above. There are several areas on campus that are in need of

volunteer help!

The Library needs help to organize and restock books and other related tasks.

Gifts-n-More and Towers Desk continue to need assistance to fill in some vacant times during the week to serve both residents and family needs.

Escorts are needed during the summer months to help transport residents to and from different events and happenings around campus.

We always welcome individuals wanting to create a smile and make a resident’s day

exceptional via the Friendly Visitors Program.

These are just a few immediate areas which need caring “bodys.” If you are able to help

some where, able to give any time during the month, every now and then or know

someone who would be able to give of their time, we would love to hear from them. For

more details, other opportunities and questions please call Tom at 853-2009 or email him

at [email protected].

Reminder for Assisted Living and Independent Living Residents

The Auxiliary of Twin Towers reminds you of their annual picnic Thursday, June 12, 2014

from 11:00 a.m. - 1:30 p.m. at the Centennial Barn. New residents are welcome and

encouraged to attend.

Please return your reservation to the special designated box at the Towers Desk by

Monday, June 5, 2014. Due to limited space, the Auxiliary regrets they are unable to

accept any reservations after June 5, 2014. Any questions, please call Sandy Bollinger

at 574-4027.

Associates making an investment in Twin Towers

Associates of Life Enriching Communities are invited each June to give back to the

organization through the Associate Appeal. Last year’s appeal raised $18,930.82 with

most gifts being designated toward the General Fund, Benevolent Care Fund, and

Pastoral Care Fund. We are grateful for the generosity of our associates in addition to all

the care they provide to the residents, families and to each other.

Recently, Twin Towers said goodbye to a beloved resident. At the service

which was held in the Wilson Chapel, our own Joe Boone was officiating. He

shared that our resident who had been challenged with speech after a stroke

was speaking up a storm there in heaven. He previously asked if you had only

five words that you could speak—what would they be? This had me thinking

about that message throughout the weekend. Interestingly enough a dear

friend asked what would your five words be. I shared that I would want them to

be: “I LOVE YOU ALL DEARLY.” Over the last several months my daily

devotions have said to love one another. I seemed to see, every where I

traveled there would be a church marque with Love…and various sayings

such as…. “God so loved the world that he gave us his begotten son. “

On that same day we then celebrated a resident who has lived at Twin

Towers 28 years; two of his children gathered with a small group of residents

and associates that wanted to create an exceptional everyday experience. It

was a special day in so many ways from saying goodbye to a dear resident to

celebrating a resident who came to Twin Towers to make friends. As the tears

fell from his eyes, he was moved to share: “I can’t believe so many persons love

and care about me.” Each day we are called to be God’s love in action. In

doing this, we create heaven on earth.
