Salt Lake Valley Science and Engineering Fair was held March 27th at Rice Eccles Stadium on the University of Utah campus. There was a huge variety of projects rep-resenting our school from physics and astronomy to energy, environmental manage-ment, and transportation. Ten participants from BSTA received eight awards at the Fair. Once again, our students made us proud! Congratulations to all who entered their projects. The awards issued are as follows: 11th grade - Michael Mills – Honorable Mention Award by Westminister college / Plant sciences – 3rd place 9th grade – Jared Jensen – Physics & Astronomy – 2nd place 8th grade – Christian Mickelsen – Honorable Mention by American Society of Civil Engineers 8th grade – Danial Ebling – Computer Science – 2nd place 7th grade – Jay Shah – Honorable Mention Award by Green Building Association / Energy&Transportation – 2nd place 7th grade – Alex Nikols – Energy&Transportation - 3rd place

Katie Fagundes, a California native, will begin her second year at Beehive Science and Technology Academy. Katie graduated from Wilcox High School in the Bay Area and then attended the University of California Davis. At UC Davis, she earned her teaching credential, BA in English, and later her MA in Education. While living in Califor-nia, Katie taught 7th and 8th grade Language Arts at Esparto Middle School. In 2005, she moved with her husband to Salt Lake City so he could attend graduate school. Before starting at BSTA last year, Katie worked as the Education Coordinator, devel-oping curriculum for The Children's Museum of Utah (now called Discovery Gateway). Katie is very excited to be returning to BSTA this year. Along with teaching Language Arts, she will be advising the Student Council and Drama Club. In her free time Katie enjoys reading, writing, traveling and eating good food.

Hello, We are underway with the accreditation process. Currently, I have met with the Steering Committee. There are many items to com-plete at this level. Teachers will brainstorm to come up with school-wide DRSLs (desired results in student learning), which will be the basis on which we all shall work. Any inter-ested parents wanting to add their input, please sign up for one of the sub-groups. Thanks to all for your support of our 1st an-nual dinner, “Food For Thought”. It was a pleasure and an honor to meet the Former Senator Jake Garn and Newsman Sterling Poulson. We had a nice turnout, and I think all who attended had a memorable experience. I have had the pleasure to meet with several families thus far dur-ing my Saturday morning breakfasts. I hope to have the chance to meet with everyone within the next couple of months. When you receive your invitation, but you become unable to attend, please let us know.

La Caille “Food for Thought” Dinner

Our First Annual fund raising dinner was held on Thursday evening, March 12th and offered us a wonderful evening of din-ing, trivia and incredible guest speakers, Former Senator Jake Garn and Sterling Poulson. BSTA welcomed Sterling Poul-son from Channel 2 News and former As-tronaut and Senator Jake Garn who to-gether made the evening both entertaining and inspirational. We were successful in raising close to $3,500 for the school. A big thanks is given to all of you who do-nated items for the silent auction or do-nated your time helping set everything up, as well as those of you who came to the dinner it-self. With-out you this dinner could not have been a success.

Attention Students and Parents!

Are you looking for camp fun this summer? Good news! Beehive is planning a summer camp during June. At the end of the school year, June 8-12th, BSTA is planning a summer camp with you in mind! All are invited, however, GPA and discipline records will be reviewed and considered prior to acceptance to the camp. Also, clubs and academic teams will get preference to admissions. Look for additional information to this fun event to be forthcom-ing.

Did you know that everyday 1,200 Americans die from smok-ing-related illnesses. Further, teen smokers get sick more of-ten than teens who don’t smoke, and they have smaller lungs and weaker hearts than teens who don’t smoke. Of 3,000 teens who start smoking today, nearly 1,000 will eventually die as a re-sult from smoking. Which statis-tic are you?

The Drama Club would like to invite all students to enter the VSA Arts script writing competition. The winner receives $2,000 and a trip to Washington DC to see their play performed. Students grades 6-12 are eligible to enter. Mrs. Fagundes is over this project. Deadline is

April 15th.

BSTA is now offering THE SAVE OUR PLANET CLUB! It is an environmental club in which students get to choose which projects and inventions they want to make or do to

help our planet. Maybe you want to make a solar power water distiller! Or maybe you care more about global warming! Our greatest goal is to convert a BW Bug into a solar powered

electric vehicle! If we have peaked your interest, put your name on the club list with Thomas in the office.

She will complete a referral to see where the gap exists and will proceed as necessary.

Student Not Coming Today? Please notify the office as soon as you are able to do so if you student will not be attending school. This is important as we need to know students are safe, and parents are aware they’re not in school. 265-2782 x 100.
