JDBIMS was founded on 17th August 1997, here we celebrate

the 18th Birth day of JDBIMS so, it is very appropriate to reflect on the vision, mission, goals and the belief system. Where have we reached and where are we heading!!!With the changes taking place in

management education, with the biases against the only women’s Management Institution, with the mandate to have women on boards

of corporations, with an increasing number of Indian women occupying the positions of ultimate responsibility in many multinational corporations and banks, what is the role of JDBIMS? Where does it stand? How does it

visualize itself to be in the course of time? How does it see its future? Considering its many limitations and chequered history, JDBIMS has

produced some outstanding women achievers, senior managers at the levels of Directors, VP, etc. Almost every batch has produced some outstanding managers and professionals. Others have become entrepreneurs. One can

say it demonstrates the fire in the belly of these individuals. There is more to it. It is a culture of self reliance and confidence the young women have

imbibed in the SNDT Women’s University and all its institutions including JDBIMS.JDBIMS Belief System:

The time in JDBIMS should be an enabler, inculcate a winner’s attitude and cultivate good personal and professional traits.

When a student leaves JDBIMS, she should feel confident, competent and determined to meet the challenges that may come in her professional and personal life-No matter what background she comes from when she enters

JDBIMS. This belief system, makes things happen!!! As in every collection of human

beings, not everyone has the same need or dream. Fire in the belly is what moves us humans. JDBIMS will continue to uphold its vision, pursue its mission and make every effort to realize its goals and objectives in keeping

with its belief system.

Today’s world is not yesterday's world and tomorrow’s world will not betoday's world. We are living in a world which is changing constantly and the onlything permanent in life is CHANGE. We moved from Stone Age to industrialrevolution to era of excellence and are now in the world of Information Explosion. You need to have a very clear mind to survive in today's complex world and a greatability to adjust to changing circumstances if you have to succeed.

Let us look at some examples of dramatic changes in the world. 100 years back ittook 21 days to travel from Bombay to London - now it takes 8 hours. 10 years backit took 2 weeks for overseas letters - now we live in the instant era of electronicmail. Ten years back mobile phones was a luxury - today it is a business necessity. What does the future hold - the blue chip is already making waves - Using thistechnology, your TV will reduce to zero volume when your phone rings, your TV willdisplay a message when your fridge has run out of milk and the more your explore, you will find new things coming in and old things going out.

What are the skills you need to survive in this world:

1. 1You need to have sharp analytical skills to decide if you are making the correctdecision - as things change rapidly, people will be out there to take you for aride - you need to be able to separate the men from the boys and you need todevelop good judgement skills based on analytics - Your Algebra and Geometryand computer classes will help you in this area.

2. You need to remain aware of all that is happening around you and be able to pickthe area that you enjoy working. The key word is ENJOY. You should not writeIIT entrance exam because your parents asked you to write it. You should notjoin a computer class because the good looking girl or handsome guy in yourneighbourhood joined it. You should choose a line which you enjoy - be it music, sports, dance, engineering or medicine or commerce. Your Physics, chemisty, science and general knowledge subjects help you decide what you enjoy and thiswill become the foundation for your future.

3. Once you have chosen a line for your career, remain focussed and persevere ittill you succeed. The road to heaven is thorny but the pleasure after you reachthere is beyond words. You need to have the will power and determination toovercome difficulties and failures. Your Physical and Scout training instills therequired qualities for success.

4. Another key factor is discipline - In the ever changing world it is easy to fallprey to bad habits. You can do good things with internet - you can also dohorrible things with it. It is up to you. You can sit for hours with a book in handin front of a TV pretending you are studying and then complaining 'my teacher isvery stingy and cuts marks for every small mistake' or concentrate on whateveryou are doing. Remember that doing one thing at a time helps you clear a longlaundry list - trying to do too many things at the same time gets you into knots.Your parents and teachers are the key in building this area.

6ILLUMINATI 9

Page 7: Illuminati issue9 august, 2015

5. The world is becoming a single market place as all organizations tradeinternationally. In this era of internationalism, you need to develop crispcommunication skills - you must be able to say what you want to say in as short atime as possible. You need to understand the culture of each country and ensurethat you live like a Roman when you are in Rome. Your English, Hindi, Marathi andother language classes will help you a lot in this area.

Net, Net all things that you learn in school are important. Nothing is more importantor less important than the other and once you have learnt the basics of everything inschool, you can start specializing in college. In school, you are the Jack of all subjectsand as you move into higher education you start becoming the master of one area.

Becoming a master in your area of specialization involves hard work. Success has aprice tag attached to it. The time to invest in your future is now. You are young andhave the enthusiasm and energy to do hard work. You will become a successful personor a failure in life depending on what you do now - It is your choice. Your hard worktoday is like a fixed deposit which will mature later in life and you will enjoy it withinterest. All this may make you feel, why was I born in this era of Change and not born earlier andlife would have been much easier. Not True at all....Humanity has never been static - they have

always looked for improving the quality of life...the invention of the wheel, the advent of electricity, telephone, trains, airplanes, the discovery of penicillin, solar system and so many other itemstestify to the fact that humans have always tried to come up with newer ideas to improve life.Ask your great-grandfather, grandfather and father and all of them will always haveenough stories to say how difficult or exciting life was in their younger days as thingswere always changing. You are part of the life cycle of Change and the more youparticipate in it, the more you will enjoy it.

In summary, the following three lines sums up my message:

Vision withoutaction is a dreamAction without vision is running around in circlesAction with Vision is a dream-come-true

Everyone has always aspires to b e like someone. There are such

eminent men and women whose l ives are so motivating that we Endeavour t o emulate them. From my childhood, I have been greatly influenced by one such personality. She i s the first women p olice o fficer.

Kiran Bedi. She i s t ruly an i con for all. The reform she set in motion in the Tihar jail are unforgettable and remarkable.

Tihar i s a jail situated in the national capital region of Delhi. Prisoners were tortured and given inhuman t reatment, deprived of food and sanitation and o ther amenities. Kiran Bedi realized that, i rrespective o f

the c rimes that the inmates had committed, they were also human beings and a right to improve and reform themselves.

She started yoga and vispasana c lasses. In order to keep the prisoners busy, she also made arrangement for gardening and vocational t raining. With books donated from all over the country, she opened a

massive l ibrary for the inmates o f Tihar. Once known as a dingy coal mine, Tihar i s now a p lace where the prisoners are t rying to start l ife

afresh, by turning over a new l eaf.Now after h er retirement, Kiran Bedi hosts a t elevision show. In it she resolves l ocal disputes amongst the p eople impartially.

I would define a national icon as someone who t ends t o our needs and resolve our i ssues, who help us at the time of c risis. Today, p olitician and

ministers lack this basic understanding. They only turn up at the t iming of e lections, l eaving us in despair and distress during t imes o f adversity like natural disasters and terror attacks. Kiran Bedi, the super

cop, has all the qualities required to not only be a national i con, but also an excellent human being.

I am st riving hard to be someone l ike her, so that I t oo can l eave my footprints, in the sand of time by doing something for my motherland, and inspire others to strive hard, achieve their goals and become i cons o f

your nation.

Date of Visit: 13th Jan, 2015

Place of Visit: Dahanu Thermal Power Station, Dahanu.

Visits form a broader spectrum to academic curriculum. For this reason, JankideviBajaj Institute of Management Studies planned for an industrial visit to the DahanuThermal Power Station at Dahanu. The Thermal Plant was owned by Anil DhirubhaiAmbani Reliance Group. We were 17 girls accompanied by 2 faculty members, who visited the Plant. We leftat 7 a.m. from our college and reached the Plant Gate at 10 a.m. We all wereprovided by headgears which we were had to wear inside the plant. After securitycheck, we were guided to the plant by one of their security guards. However, wewere not allowed to take pictures of the plant.Mr. Lopez and Mr. Karpe were our guides for the whole plant. We had a presentationabout the plant layout and the process which briefed us how electricity is generatedand transported to our homes.About the Plant:Reliance Thermal Power Plant is situated in 1500 hectares of land near sea coast. They have divided the plant in four divisions: Colony - Land (Thermal Plant) – Creek -Ash Plant. There are 600 permanent employees and 2000 employees on contractworking in the plant. Reliance has provided residential colonies and quarters for theiremployees and families.Reliance Thermal Power Plant produces 2x250MW electricity that is it has two unitswhich produce 250 MW of electricity. This plant supplies electricity to the city ofMumbai with self-distributed network of about 120 kms.Raw materials:It is a Coal based Plant i.e. it produces electricity using coal. Coal is majorly suppliedfrom two places:•Chhattisgarh (by rail)•Indonesia (by ship)

Plant Processing:

They have railway lines connected to the plant to get the wagons filled with Coal fromthe jetty and Chhattisgarh. Coal wagons are unloaded using Tippler. Tippler rotates170 degrees to empty the wagon, 60 MT is emptied in 2 minutes. The emptied coal from the jetty is sent to the crusher, coal is then crushed from220mm to 25 mm. After crushing, it is sent to coal stacker. Further crushed coal issent to coal mill as per the demand of the fuel for the boiler. In coal mill, it iscrushed into fine particles similar to talcum powder. This powdered coal is then fired in the boiler with de-mineralized water. This wateris brought from Surya Dam near Dahanu and kept as raw water and then treated forde-mineralization and sent to the boiler, where it is heated to 1400C and coal isfired. The steam generated is then sent to rotate the turbine. The steam rotatesthe turbine at 3000 rpm. There were three turbines which were connected togenerator which converts this energy to electricity. The generator is connected totransformer which transforms this mechanical energy into electricity and this is thensent to the city of Mumbai through their self-owned distribution grid of 120 kms.

The unwanted gases which are generated in this process are treated, Sulphur dioxideis reduced and ash produced is stored in powder form. Remaining Flu gases are letout in the atmosphere through Chimney which is of a height of 275.5 meters, one ofthe highest chimneys in Asia. The ash produced is then auctioned to nearbycontractors use this ash for making bricks, cement and for construction purpose. The control room of the plant keeps a constant watch on all the various parametersof the process. There are three Maintenance Departments: Operation Department,Electrical Department, and Mechanical Department. The efficiency of the process is38% i.e. coal of Rs. 100 produces electricity of Rs. 38.Reliance Thermal Power Plant supplies 500MW of electricity to Mumbai where thedemand is 1600MW. Reliance Group is also planning to use Nuclear Energy andgenerate 1100MW of electricity so that they can satisfy the demand of electricityof city of Mumbai. The plant is a state of plant which has also won more than 100awards in quality management and various other prospects. For maintenance purpose every two years one unit of the plant is shut down for 15

days that is one of the unit is shut down for 15 days every year.Amenities:We also highly acknowledge the special presentation arranged by Reliance ThermalPower Plant for us on Fire Safety. The presentation was presented by Mr. Jagtapwho also instructed all about the safety measures to be taken by all at the time offire. As a part of Companies Social Responsibility, many fire safety workshops areconducted by them in the nearby villages. Masses of nearby villages are beingeducated, trained and instructed about the safety precautions that they should followin case of fire breakage. After having our lunch, we went to see the colonies and various places within thepremises of the plant area. The Plant has a beautiful layout with a temple at theEntrance, a lake, a garden for small children, shopping mall, a theatre and a cricketground for all its employees. They also have a Polyhouse, which was inaugurated bySmt. Tina Ambani and many species of different kinds of flowering and non-floweringplants are cultivated. Reliance Thermal Power Plant also has transport facility for thepeople staying in the colonies. We left from the Plant at 3.30 pm and reached our College at 7 pm in the evening.

When you define innovation the usual definition that comes to your mind is-

“Innovation is about doing things differently, making a big difference, making impossible possible.”Who does that in India? We can scan the history and would come up with an

interesting list of people and the innovations. Here we will focus on three types. First, the social innovation –brought in

by a thought leader to bring freedom and independence to a nation. Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi .Our own Bapuji. Seemed impossible but he did it with only two of his weapons- Ahimsa and Swadeshi, he took on the

might of the British Empire by mobilizing millions of Indians. He did things differently, made a big difference and achieved what everyone considered

was impossible.Second, the industrial innovation - by introducing affordable product which includes masses at the bottom of the pyramid to uplift their lifestyle and bring

about an economic change. It happened in the form of a car: Tata Nanomanufactured by Tata Motors, Nano “A dream car for a common man”. When

you make products more expensive, they will belong to the few people at the top. When they become less expensive, many more people at the bottom can afford it. Nano was priced at Rs 1.00 lakh so even people at the bottom could

afford it. Third, the individual innovation - by people. There are numerous

innovators in this highly populated country, not only the scientists but even an uneducated villager. Mohammed Saidullah was awarded at National Biennial Award Function of Grassroots Innovators and Outstanding Traditional

Knowledge Holders, organised by National Innovation Foundation-India, for his amphibious bicycle. Mohammed Saidullah from a small village called

Jatva-Jeneva (Purvi Champaran) of Motihari district, Bihar, innovated amphibious bicycle, which bicycle comprises a conventional bicycle modified with two extra attachments to it that enables it to run on both water and

land. After seeing Saidullah's amphibious bicycle, the then President APJ Abdul Kalam remarked that it could be used by defence personnel as well.

He was also selected as one of the 12 finalists for the prestigious Wall Street Journal Asian Innovation Awards.

11ILLUMINATI 9

Page 12: Illuminati issue9 august, 2015

Current Reality of the innovativeness in India- Though there are number of social, industrial and individual innovations happening in India, we could not use this spirit of innovation to bring about truly free

and equitable social atmosphere in India. The gap between rich and poor is widening, the injustice for weaker sections of the society still

prevails and the social mind set of Indians is still medieval and patriarchal.Product innovation: A potentially game changing innovation by Tata in

the form of Nano failed as it was branded and marketed as “Cheap" car which affected its sale and the capacity to produce remained

underutilized. The inability to manage PR in incidents of Nano catching fire was another reason. Revamping strategy with new variants had sent the prices soaring but did not improve the sales

though they were phasing out all three first-generation variants. In terms of Individual innovators from India, the recognition of talent,

innovative spirit and wide application of the innovation impacting individual and public life is yet to be realized. Despite the awards and accolades, innovator remains impoverished.Today, Saidullah sells

honey to earn his livelihood. We know our weaknesses now we need to start working on them to change the future of our innovations.

DR. DHAVAL BHATT

Dr.Bhatt is of the view that Ethics is seen as right or wrong and is different from law. In his field he cannot examine a female alone there has to be someone with her. He says that every profession needs to do with high moral values. He further defines moral as doing right. Ethics are by and large universal. And law comes after ethics and hence there is a shift from ethics to law. And it is because of glitches in ethics we need law. For example first aid treatment to any emergency case comes within law and is ethical. So there can always be a balance between law and ethics. Communicating to patients about their treatment is the most ethical act. Also judging patients by appearance or clothing sense is not ethical in his profession. Transparency is the most important thing. They need to explain to the patient’s procedure, pain, and everything and no discrimination in caste, creed etc. to be made. Patients are also to be given Consent form for everything, for avoiding opacity. If patient is on life support system than cannot remove his support system legally or ethically. He concluded saying that ethics, profession and law go hand in hand.

ADV. SATYANARAYAN

According to him, Ethics is sometimes called moral philosophy. It is branch of philosophy that systematizes, defends and recommends concepts of right and wrong. Ethics is different for religion, own belief, in eyes of law, what society accepts, etc. he says that feelings are guided by value systems. He explained hoe being legal can affect ethics. And he gave an example of Law of Ireland. It says that foetus with heartbeat cannot be aborted, so a lady could not abort her baby because of this law and she had to deliver her baby and after delivery because of some complications she died, so how can we define ethics in that matter. His definition of ethics is as follows “Any act or deal done that does not give the person an unfair advantage/benefit at the cost of another individual disadvantage is ethics for him”. He also says that there is ethics in management as well. For example many big companies have got ethical issues. Like Nestle had once marketed baby food over breast milk in the underdeveloped countries. And as we all know that nothing can replace over breast milk for the baby and because of those products many children’s were died. And nowadays there is a trend in companies that as soon as you join you are given code of conduct to help you understand the ethical things and law of the company which it expects from you.

13ILLUMINATI 9

Page 14: Illuminati issue9 august, 2015

DR. NEIL SEQUEIRA

Dr. Neil spoke about ethics in a very different perspective; he says that the biggest challenge in ethics is the human being himself. Your first ethical responsibility as a human being is to treat another human being with dignity, every time a person comes to you with a problem and you say that you don’t have time it shows that you don’t respect that person with dignity. Fairness – treating everyone equally is an important aspect of ethics no matter what situation it is if you are bias no one will respect you. The third aspect of ethics is talk to your employees; engage with them about their problems, no matter how small their problems are. The next important ethic is to be positive, if you are positive and happy at work, you spread happiness. Reflect on your behavior – at the end of the day think about how you could have done better job. And lastly the most important aspect is to ‘’ communicate ‘’.if you think something is wrong communicate, if you think something is right communicate. Communication is not the problem but how you put forth to your boss or your employees.

CA JAYANT BHATT

He is of the view that whatever our parents say that is ethical and ethics begin right from there. Company’s Hr makes candidates wait. How ethics changes its color. He explained the concept of window dressing in balance sheet. Also he explained about tax evasion and tax avoidance. Tax avoidance is ignorance to law and also unethical. And tax evasion is just ignoring to pay and unethical. So he explains that tax avoidance is illegal and unethical, i.e. blend of ethics and law, whereas tax avoidance is merely unethical. He says that tax planning is ethical, lawful and also people can save their tax payment. Why paying taxes is important for each and every one, especially to the businessman, since that cost directly or indirectly affect your pocket. And finally he concluded saying that ethics, law and profession can change its colour when a person is made to stand on different positions.

Each day has the power to become a memory or a tragedy.

The choice is at each one’s hand. 27th February, 2015 was one of the

most memorable day of our journey at JDBIMS. A much deserved break

from regular routine work was finally given to us. The day started with

all of us getting ready and all excited to the journey ahead. We

assembled at the college premises by 7am. By 7.30 am, we started our

journey. The bus departed for our destination. We had some pick up

points on the way at Growels, Borivali, Thane and some more places.

Fun and frolic was part of the journey, accompanied with antakshari

which brought out the singer in each one of us. By 9.30 am, we reached

our destination, ‘Shangrila Water Resort’. Our joy was spellbound. We

were excited and overjoyed and quickly alighted from the bus. After the

check-in formalities, we proceeded towards the hall for breakfast. We

relished on idli, sambhar and chutney; and also some mouth watering

jalebis which were sneaked out from the guest section.

Quickly after breakfast we hurried to the changing rooms, got all geared

up to jump into the pool. We explored the various rides, slides – the

small ones, the 90 degree ones and also the really long ones with all the

twists and turns too. It was a really thrilling experience and also

hilarious to see the expressions of every other person. We also enjoyed

the waterfalls and the rain dance; and danced till we literally fell. Then

we got into the wave pool and the waves started increasing. Slowly we

started enjoying and jumping along with each wave. We were tired by

now and were too hungry. We went for lunch and had some delicious

food. From munchings to noodles to chole puri to dalrice to shrikhand,

we had it all. To add to our taste, we had a huge bunch of cute and

innocent children who won our hearts by their little gestures of love and

affection towards each other. We just dint want to leave them, but

unfortunately since we wanted to go back to the pool as well; we left

towards the five feet pool. Our dearest Trupti (4’11) was too scared to

get into the water. But we assured her that we would hold her and that

nothing would happen. After a lot of compelling she agreed, and then

was thrilled and thanked us for the relaxing experience.

Divya and Rajesh Sir were our divers who kept on showcasing their

diving skills. We truly enjoyed each and every moment of that day. With

much gratitude and love we would like to thank two most important

people – Devi and Rekha.

15ILLUMINATI 9

Page 16: Illuminati issue9 august, 2015

They did not come into the water even for a moment, but still they

accompanied us for the picnic and proved themselves as excellent

photographers of the day. Thank you so much.

Finally, the time arrived when we had to get back. Unwillingly we all

got back to the changing rooms, freshened up and heading towards our

bus. Meanwhile, during checkout we also got ice -creams and clicked

group pics. Boarding the bus we started our journey back. On the way

we also had some hot tea, coffee and bhaji from a tea stall. We reached

back with refreshing memories and a day filled with fun and frolic.

A word for all those here now and for those who will come in

– “You have 2 years to be irresponsible here. Relax.

Work is for people with jobs. You’ll never remember class time, but you’ll remember time you wasted hanging out with your friends.

So, stay out late. Go out on a Tuesday with your friends when you have a

paper due on Wednesday.

Spend money you don’t have. Drink till sunrise.

The work never ends, but college does….”

Walking along the street one day,I saw an old man go on his way.Holding onto his stick, He slowly trudged,Dazed at the traffic, he couldn’t budge. He needed to go the other side,Fear writ on his face, he could not hide;People bypassed him one by one,He was left alone, he could hardly run.My heart went out to his poor old soul,Lost to himself, no one to hold.I reached out to him and held his hand,And got him to cross over to the bus stand. His weary eyes were brimming with tears,My supportive hand took away his fears.Through tearful eyes he thanked me and smiled,“May the blessings of God be on you, my child.”

When I started losing on myself,I found a man whom I felt my own!Who was there for me... Whenever wherever I want!Who loved me deep inside...But never lemme know!Whom I started loving....And never let him go!

Destiny decided us to meet...Honey, sweetheart is how we greet! The fire of love is still fuelling inside our heart,It became our shadow...Where everybody knew... Except us!

This was a lie... I said above,As i'm his crown who resembles our love!Majesty is how I'm called throughout...Highness is the man, I shouted aloud!

We met because, we are the loversDestiny is the one, who got us together!Love is the feeling who got us close,He's my bae and I'm his soul!

A short story of Me being in Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital.. Right from the initial approach to the final selection, it was a tough nut for me to crack. I was privileged to join Kokilaben hospital as an intern..Yes, it was 4th of May, our date of joining to one of the most finest hospitals around. It was the first day itself where our mentor Dr. Neil Sequeira gave us our project. Trust me on this, the work environment in the organization is so particular that we had to pull our socks up and get on ground working from the first day itself, and that too with the finesse. We had got the job of assessing the culture of organization regarding Patient Safety. We had to conduct one survey in hospital having a huge sample size of 1018, covering each and every department right from supporting departments to the medicos to the top management people.Like every task, it was definitely not the easy one. I had to constantly prove myself on each point of time. The result of which I got to imbibe the strong work ethics and values from legendaries and I have emerged as a better person in myself. The HR organization in Healthcare Industry is far more different and difficult than HR in any other industries there. Healthcare industry being fragile in nature, it is very difficult to tackle everyday issues, because it directly or indirectly affects patient safety and their life.KDAH taught me on how to be Compassionate and be Competitive at the same time. KDAH gave me an insight into the intricacies of life and the value of it. KDAH taught me multitasking on various tasks at the same time due to which I could also do my individual project along with the team project in parallel. Now if I look back and see the previous me, there is definitely a different me

today. a Better one... It was a wonderful experience for me working in KDAH, Worth Re-living..!
