from: John Amelsberg, DirectorWell if you were not in Gt. Falls forthe Second Annual 8-Ball Wild WestShootout you missed another stellarevent. The 8-ball Casino located at1020 17th ST So added $5000 to anopen singles 8-Ball event along withanother $1500 to a Ladies only event. The Ladies’ event was planned to beheld at The Prospector Sports Bar,unfortunately a week earlier a fireburned the building to the ground. Thefire started in the ceiling above threebeautiful Diamond tables. When thesmoke was first found, the peoplewere evacuated. When in minutes theentire false ceiling fell on the Diamondand the building burst into flames. The fire started about 1:00pm, we werethankful everyone had gotten out and no one was hurt. Later that eveningthere were six APA pool league teams scheduled to play on those tables. With 40-50 pool players in the room the fire may have gone undetecteduntil l the ceiling collapsed. Many thanks go to the 8-Ball Casino, First Interstate Band, and AmericanMusic the event sponsors. With the large field already registered we werescrambling to find a location to host the lady’s event. The Classic 50’sCasino was generous enough to put a couple extra tables in their cardroom and accommodate the ladies’ event. The weekend started Friday night with a players Calcutta. For the first timein more years than I will admit, when asked how many players have wegot? I had to replied “TOO MANY!” With a field of 163 men and 57 ladies, it

was a daunting task. Player packetswith rules, drink tickets and casinocoupons handed out, everyoneregistered and paid, Calcutta listshanded out. With so many skilled competitorsbidding was very exciting and morethan $14,000 was added to thealready large purse. After theAuct ionthe fieldw a s

divided into brackets. The Ladiesplayed one bracket down to 16 thatwould return Sunday for the finals. TheOpen was divided into four bracketswith the top eight from each to returnon Sunday.A race to five and 150 plus matches to beheld, time was not a luxury. Each matchup was given forty-five to play, after that a45 second shot clock was implemented.Even with the best efforts of the directors andmany volunteers it was not possible, to get theentire field narrowed all the way down to 32

One of the many responsibilities ofa TD is to ensure everyone has anequal opportunity to compete. With only 15 players in thistournament, and the statement thatthe practice table was not beingused in the tournament, should bean indicator to the TD that thematch was suspect. If the TD hadassigned tables (a very standardpractice) this would have reallybeen in favor to the player that wasduped. Still with only 15 players inthe tournament, the duped playershould have known who he wasplaying next and should always beaware of where he stands in theflow chart.Hearing only one side of thisargument is not a basis to make adetermination. But to answer thequestion ... What would be yourcall? Or what would you have doneas a TD, here is my reply. How do you determine which playeris telling the truth? Some additional information wouldbe helpful, but if none were availableyou could:You can ask if anyone witnessed theevent (foul or issue). It is well withinthe TD’s rights to solicit informationin a dispute. Sometimes all thewitnesses are one of the playersbuddies. And what if the witnesseshave different versions? You can take sides with the playeryou feel is more reputable… notalways a good idea, and can brandthe TD as a “HOMER” alwaysleaning towards the home crowd incalls ... bad rep for the TD.You can take each player aside andlisten to their side of the story andmake a determination based onwhat you believe to be TRUE ... Bigjudgment call.. and not very fair toat least one of the players. You can explain to the person thattraveled 175 miles to a tournamentthat it is always a good practice toknow how to read a flow chart andwho your next opponent is and what

Kyoko Sone, Liz Cole, Chris Rogers (Tournament Director)

Tournament Directors:Chris Rogers and FordThe final NWPA Tour stop for 2007was in many ways similar to the start. For instance, both events were heldat The Parlor in Bellevue, Wa. (anoccurrence we hope to make atradition), almost every player at theyear’s end also started at the Parlorin March and both times we had agood grove of spectators turn up.The best part of our last event eachyear, besides the battle for the top 6spots, is the banquet, where dinner(free to any member and a smallcharge to guests) is provided, awardsare given and prizes raffled off. ElaineEberly is to be commended for gettingtogether donations from a variety ofvendors. Notably Linda Pault of RT9 gave us several of her famouspaintings to raffle off. The money allowed the NWPA to sponsor its ownqualifying spot to the WPBA for this event. Also, our own Linda Carterdonated the grand prize of a cruise in the Bahamas or Mexico. Many thanksto all.Believe it or not, but 1st, 2nd and 3rd place awards couldn’t be presentedbecause our trophy supplier was hit by a vehicle, ruining there store notonce, but twice! But the awards do go to Kyoko Sone for First (no surprise),Liz Cole for second and Linda Carter for third. The tournament director’saward for sportsmanship went this year to Mikki Small. Congratulations! For the sake of brevity, I’ll start the actual tournament summary withSunday’s play. On the A side semi-finals, Liz Cole beat Yuko Kudaka 7-4and Kyoko Sone got Jessica Orth 7-2. At the same time, on the B side,Kim Hole won 7-3 over Andy Ruth and then beat Yuko 7-5 while SuzanneOsborne got past Janie Reckard 7-5 and Jessica 7-3. This set up a battlebetween Suzanne and Yuko that went hill-hill with Suzanne getting the finalgame. The point, however, was the match of the year. While never trailing, Lizcouldn’t get more than a one game lead over Kyoko. She did get on the hillfirst for a 6-5 lead (until then, no one had won more then four games againstKyoko in a race to 7), but after a run out tied it, Kyoko controlled the last

break and forced two kick shots fromLiz, which she it. But Kyoko was ableto find an out to win. Liz was readyfor a re-match and took out Yuko 7-2.The finals, one race to nine, mirroredthe point match except Kyoko wasalways barely ahead. Then, justwhen Liz tied the match at 6-6, Kyoko, who had been struggling, nailed thenine in the corner on the break, thenplayed smart and skillfully, notmissing again to win 9-6.A pleasure to watch, we wish the bestto Kyoko in her upcoming WPBAseason and invited her back to ourtour anytime. Until, that is, she is inthe top 16 of the World Rankings. From all the player and volunteers, we

wish to thank our sponsors and especially the room owners who make ourtour possible and we can’t wait till next year!1st Kyoko Sone $4052nd Liz Cole $2653rd Yuko Kudaka $1704th Suzanne Osborne $1305/6 Kim Hole $80

Jessica Orth $807/8 Andy Ruth $60

Janie Reckard $60

Rotation ContinuousBy: Bob Jewett of the SFBA

Bob Jewett

Do you have troubleworking your waythrough run-outs? Doyou have to fall back onsafety play more thanyou would like? Hereis a game that will helpyou develop the skillsto run out even whenthere looks like there’snot much hope. It wassuggested to me byDanny Kuykendallfrom Southern

California and is called Rotation Continuous. The rules are pretty simple. You are playing15-ball rotation so you have to hit the lowestball first on each shot. At the start of each turnat the table, the incoming player gets ball inhand. You score one for each ball pocketed, and lose a point for a foul. Shots do not haveto be called. Safety play is not allowed. Twoor more can play, or you can play against theGhost (explained below). For the opening break, the one ball goes infront, and the 2 and 3 balls should go on thecorners. If the breaker makes a ball, he getsball in hand to continue the run, and gets apoint for each ball he sank on the break.Whoever makes the last ball of a rack breaksthe next rack.Play to a total of 50 or 75 points. If you play anintentional safety, you lose 15 points. (Thislast rule is hard to judge, but I don’t see a betterway to prevent safety play.)To play this game well, you have to perfectyour break-outs and other special shots and

take chances. Shown in thediagram is a situation that looksreally tough at first until you see thesolution through the first four balls. If this goes well, you will havesolved all the problems. In the first shot, called a “ticky,” theobject ball comes off a cushion to aball near the cushion to trickle intothe pocket. This shot is much easierthan it looks and is important to

master. The angle shown is nearly ideal, and it helps if you shoot as softly as possible. The shot on the 2 ball is an easy break-outof the 12-13 and is sure to get some kind ofshape on the 3. You could play the 3-11combo, but your inning would soon end asthe 3 would likely be on the side cushionbetween the side and the 4-5. Instead playthe 3 off the 10 which is a problem ballanyway. If you end up with the angle shown to the 4ball, playing the cue ball off the 4 and thecushion to make the 9 should bring the cueball around to the middle of the table for apossible shot on the 4 which will be clear. The other major technique that you will needto master for this game is the bank shot. Ifyou MUST run out, the bank is often the bestpercentage. If you don’t move the 10 ballwith the 3 as shown in the diagram, youare likely to end up banking it. A commonmistake is to try to break the ball out (andmiss it) rather than take the bank, but oftenyou should resign yourself to the bank andplay good position for it.“Playing the Ghost” means to play againstan imaginary opponent who plays fairly well.At ghost nine ball, the Ghost is usuallyassumed to always run out if you give himany shot. To make things a little fairer, youget ball in hand after the break. Miss andyou lose. For Rotation Continuous, you can playagainst a Ghost of a particular ability. Eachtime you miss, mark up your points and fivepoints for the Ghost. If that’s too tough, trythe 3-point Ghost.

If you need some final motivation, remember that solo Rotation is EfrenReyes’ practice game of choice. I’veheard that he would give the 15-pointGhost a very bad time at RotationContinuous.

from: Rose Wilson, Chris Rogers & Ford(League Directors)Uncle Jack’s in Lynnwood, WA held aBCA Qualifier and 50 members joinedto get their qualifications done for theLincoln City 9-Ball tournament andalso for the year. We also had (6)other members who only needed toput in one week for the 9-balltournament, but these players willneed to play a (8) week session toqualify into future BCA tournaments. It was decided to turn this qualifierinto a small cash league to allow theplayers to have a tournament after theleague ended and also to getsomething back for their weekly play. All the weekly fees paid in wentdirectly back to the players in a scotchdoubles tournament. Some of theplayers had never played scotch doubles but got their feet wet in a big way.Tickets were sold for $1 during the 11 week league for a drawing during thetournament for items donated by several sponsors. All the money raisedfrom the selling of tickets, and weekly paid dues went into the prize fun forthe tournament. After everything was completed, we paid out $1,780 in theplayoffs to all participants. The items donated for the player to win in thedrawing were, a very nice Poker Chip Set worth $150 donated by ABCBilliards of Lynnwood. A “Jump Bridge” worth $35 donated cue maker JoeMcLaughlin. There was a “Jump Cue” donated by Jessie of 911 Billiards inFederal Way, WA. The big prized of the day was donated by RandyCamantigue, the new owner of Uncle Jack’s Billiards And Lounge. Theprized was two 2 -Night 3 Day stays indifferent casinos in Los Vegas. Each package came with a $500 fun book, worth about $650.“ Make a note - in our next league qualifier will be (2) more of the vacationtrips and you never know what else may be donated”. All the players andChris, Ford and I want to thank each of the sponsors for their generousdonations. To make this Scotch Dbl tournament fair to everyone; we decided to makeit the highest paired up with the lowest and then went from there with thematching of everyone who showed up. The tournament ended up with (16)couples. The matches started with Race to (4) on the A - side and then arace to (3) on the B - side until the point match. The point match was a

race to (5) and the finals was one raceto (7) for all the cash.I had stared out the day with sorenessin my back that continually got worstas time went by. But I was able to playwell enough to help my partner MarvinHolmes to go undefeated thru thepoint match to then sit undefeatedwaiting for the B - side winners tomatch up with us. Unfortunately in themiddle of the second game of the finalmatch, I caught my foot as I wasturning away from the table and felt asevere tear on the right side of myback, where the soreness was andhad to forfeit the match. We wereplaying Harry Platis and Bernie Fosterat the time and since they were up 2to 0, we conceited the match to them.Harry decided that we should split the

1st and 2nd place money which was nice of them but not expected. I wantto thank Harry and Bernie for being such good sports about it and alsoapologize to Marvin again for not being able to complete the tournament. Idid find out later I had torn the muscles and would not be able to play anypool for a couple of weeks, which is just in time for Lincoln City! The tournament went as follows:1st $400 Harry Platis & Bernie Foster2nd $250 Marvin Holmes & Rose Wilson3rd $180 Josh Stewart & Brian Goldrick4th $130 Jerry Bogen & Cid Saldana

Western BCA Completes Successful 2007 9-BallChampionship TournamentIt was an outstanding 9-ball tournament. The Tenth Annual 2007 Western BCA 9-Ball Championships opened play Oct. 22 with mini-tournaments and ring gamesthat night. The “real” competition started Wednesday morning with Scotch teamsplaying in Open and Master team competition. Singles followed Thursday and Fridayand teams competed on Saturday and Sunday. This year’s Western BCA 9-ball tournament was bigger and betterthan ever. The 131 men’s teams and 39 women’s teams werethe most ever to sign up to play. Attendancewas up 20 percent from 2006, with 719players in attendance this year. Total entriesrose 17 percent, and payouts totaled$60,045. Added moneyincreased to almost$22,000. This year even sawan added division with Men’sand Women’s Novice Singlesplay.Men’s Master division waswon by Todd Marsh. Todd hadto beat strong competitionon his way to the top of theheap. Beginning with his firstmatch he played, in order, Colin McMurphy, Ken Dodd, Steve Lingelbach, ChadBisconer, Cedric Sloan, and then Don Wirtaman (who played Todd for the point and

lost and then came back around after defeatingKen Dodd). Todd went through the field in theMen’s Master Singles by not losing a match.Impressive win, Todd.As an added note, Todd finished second in

this year’s 8 Ball Championships in theMen’s Masters to Dan Louie from the

Seattle area. This year Dan was unableto attend the Western BCA tournament

as he was in the hospitalback East due to aserious medical problemthe required him to stayin intensive care forseveral days. Theproblem occurred whilehe was playing in the U.S. Open tournament in

Virginia. Best wishes on your recovery, Dan.Jackie Fitchner clinched the Women’s Master division. Jackie’s route took herthrough matches with Barb Thompson, Heather Bullock, Josie Leroy, Cindy Dotyfor the point and Andrea Sanz-Maes for the final. Jackie won the Women’s Masterby never losing a match and won her final match over Andrea by a score of 9-1 inonly 27 minutes. This win was an early present to herself - her birthday was thefollowing day. Incidentally, Jackie took second in the Women’sMasters at Nationals in Vegas this year.Jason Evans was steamrolled his way through the Men’s OpenA players working his way through the loser’s bracket. Jasondefeated Marvin Holmes by 8-1 in the final after Marvin haddefeated Scott Thurston (4th) and Larry Sowell (3rd) to reachthe finals. Jason also won the Open Mixed ScotchDoubles with FrancieJohnson and finished thirdin the Men’s Team event. Inaddition, Jason turned a lotof heads with his play in the10-Ball ring game onTuesday night.Scott Brasher did not looklike an Open B player whenhe destroyed the field of166 and became the Open B champion. Scott, from Kennewick, went undefeated inthe Men’s Open B. He beat David Kartchner in the finals after David beat Randel

Nineregular attendeesmade ana p p e a r a n c e ,including some of thetop performers in thetour: Eleanor Callado,Mary Rakin, andMichelle Rakin. On the winner’s side, sisters Michelle and Mary won their first two matches to meet in the hotseat match, but fate was on Michelle’s side with a 7-4 victory. On the one-loss side, Mary was sent over to play long-time pal Eleanor Callado.Eleanor’s road through the tournament began with a case game loss againstWPBA competitor Lisa D’Atri. Three wins on the one-loss gave Eleanoranother opportunity to face off against Lisa, this time with a 7-3 victory.Mary and Eleanor’s third place match finished quite abruptly, with a fewerrors on Mary’s part, and a final score of 7-1 to Eleanor. The final match between renowned break-and-run players Michelle andEleanor ended in lightning speed. Between the two of them, there musthave been at least 3 break and runs, the highlight of the match beingEleanor’s two-pack win (third on the way had she not missed the 7 ball)putting her on the hill. Going case game, Michelle cleaned up the last rackfor the win. Many thanks to Tony Torres and the rest of the Hard Times managementfor their continued support. Samm Diep (c) October 2007Level cue! Level cue!! Level cue!!!

That’s what we’re constantly toldand reminded of. The moreelevation in your cue, the moreroom there is for error. The moreelevation, the more chance there isto inadvertently masse the cue ball. The more elevation, the morechance there is to unintentionallymiscue or jump the cue ball. All ofthese are very valid reasons toalways try to keep your cue as levelas possible. However, there comes a time whenyou find your cue ball so close tothe rail that you just have no optionbut to jack up to achieve yourdesired result. This would be aninstance when it’s acceptable to notkeep a level cue.Jacked up shots, like a draw shotor a jump shot, are its own categoryof shots. I thank Tom Ross, one ofmy earlier coaches, for having medevote the last 10-15 minutes of mydaily practice to shooting nothing

but jacked up shots. Eventually, I gotso comfortable with them I couldmake them from the middle of thetable while drawing the cue ballback to the rail. You don’t have totake such extreme measures, buthere are a few tips to rememberwhen shooting jacked up shots:1. You don’t need to hit the ball veryhard. It’s easy to want to nail the cueball because we often associate thejacked up shot with the jump shot(where you do need to shoot it prettyfirm). Sometimes, we even let ourmuscles get away from us. Tip #2will help with this one.2. Once you’re lined up and jackedup, visualize just dropping your cue.Try to imagine just letting that cueslip out of your fingertips and let theweight of the cue drop straight ontothe cue ball without any of thoseextra movements from your armand wrist getting in the way.3. Make sure your stance is alignedand locked in. Whether you preferto line up for the shot from yournormal stance and come up on it,or to just walk right up to it, makesure your stance is perfectlyaligned. Depending on the shot, youmay find yourself on a tippy-toe ortwo. That’s okay. Just make sureyour body is aligned and you arewell-balanced. Actually, practicingjacked up shots helps develop yournormal alignment as well. You’llquickly learn that the slightest bit ofvariance in your stance will notpocket the ball. Everything mustcome together.

4. Unless you’ve really masteredthe jacked up shot, avoid using anyside spin. Elevation + side spin =masse. When practicing jacked up shots, begin with straight in stop shotsalong the foot rail. Then, set upstraight in draw shots. Next, giveyourself a slight angle. Start withdevoting a few balls per practice tojust shooting jacked up. Before youknow it, you’ll rarely miss a jackedup shot again! An important note: Make sure youdo not shoot from the same spotevery time. Like jump shots, theelevation in your cue can be veryhard on the equipment. Move thecue ball around and practice theshot in moderation. And most importantly, even thoughyou now have the tips to shooteffective jacked up shots, only shootthem when absolutely necessary. When you have the option to roll theball versus jacking up to achieveposition, rolling the ball is always thehigher percentage shot.PLEASE BE SURE TO VISIT THENEW & IMPROVED TIP JAR ATPOOLTIPJAR.COM. Good MechanicsStep Two

By Roger Long - Advanced Certified InstructorLast month, we talked about the mechanicsinvolved in achieving proper alignment. Thismonth, we’ll wrap up our discussion ongood mechanics by talking about themechanics involved in maintaining a levelcue.Any time a cue is stroked through a cueball at a downward angle, the cue ball isalmost always curved off of its straight-linepath. The reason for this is because thedownward angle puts a backspin on the ball, which then sets up friction between the balland the cloth, which then generates heat, which then causes the cue ball to “drag”. If

there is any sidespin (English) on the cue ball (which there almost alwaysis, due to the fact that the cue ball is rarely struck at exactly dead center onthe vertical axis), the ball will curve in the direction of the English, i.e., RightEnglish will produce a right-hand curve. Therefore, unless the shooter isintentionally wanting to curve the cue ball, the cue stick must be held aslevel as possible all through the stroke. The best way to keep the cue level all the way through the stroke is to usewhat is called a “pendulum stroke” (see Diagram A). A pendulum stroke is

one where you start with a levelcue, and then you move only theforearm back and forth, keepingeverything else, including the upperarm, locked into place. The motionresulting from this stroke will looklike the swinging of a pendulum ona clock. When you use a pendulumstroke you are eliminating allunnecessary body and extremitymovements from which miss-hitson the cue ball generally occur.Another thing to be considered is

where you should grip the cue. This will vary from player to player dependingon physical make up and personal style (upright stance, low stance, etc.).The one thing everyone should try to practice, however, is adopting a gripthat will have the forearm perpendicular to the floor as the tip contacts thecue ball (see Diagram B). Gripping the cue at this spot will ensure that you

contact the cue ball at the cue’s mostlevel point (at the bottom of the

pendulum arc) when executingthe stroke.Well, dear shooters; that

about sums up my ownviewpoints on

mechanics

that can help achieve better fundamentals. But just remember, you’re notgoing to see all great players using these exact mechanics - many havedeveloped their own ways of achieving straight and level strokes. So don’tlet me, or anyone else, tell you that you absolutely have to do things thisway. Only you can be the judge of what’s right for you.

The Diablo Valley Pool Women league has been running leagues for more that adecade. We are composed of women who love to play pool and strive to getcompetitive enough to face the challenges of the competition of the upcomingyearly event that runs out of the Riviera Hotel in Las Vegas, Nevada; the National 8-ball BCA and ACS tournament. We would like to give credit where credit is due, and want to dedicate this piece tohonoring the journey of one of our now veterans who we believe has been committedto mastering the game ofpool and has become oneof the most consistentand dangerous shootersof our local scene. Shehas done so well, maintaining a casual butserious attitude of thegame by shaking hands, smiling and alwayssaying “LETS HAVESOME FUN”.I praise Shawn Modelotoday, because eventhough she continues tomaster her skills with thegame of pool, she alsohas managed to remainhumble and non-judgmental of the manynew players that comeinto our leagues. She isone that might share some of her knowledge with inexperienced players and willgive positive reenforcement to an upcoming player before a condescending commentcomes out her mouth. That folks, I respect.Let us share with all you folks her thoughts:How did you start playing pool?“in1995 my husband wanted to go play in a pool tourney at the sports bar and beggedme to come with him. The person running the tourney asked me if I wanted to play butI told him I didn’t know how, didn’t know the rules, he said it was ok that they would helpalong the way. I picked up a house stick and started shooting. I had beginners luck andmade some fun shots. That was on a Monday and by Friday I had bought my first cueand haven’t stopped shooting since”How did u hear about DVPL?Word of mouth. Someone told me they had women’s tourneys at Magoos. I showed upon a Friday and it turned out to be a Scotch doubles tourney. It was fun. Tina Mendozagot my number and when the summer league started she hooked my up with my firstteam with Sally as a captain of our team The Outsiders. That first year I so lookedforward to my Wednesday. nites with the ladies .I really didn’t know how to play but i washaving fun.How much time has it taken for you to get to a competitive level?YearsHow has your Vegas experienced been?During my first year we kept hearing about “Vegas” and when the time came I reallydidn’t feel ready but I remember Tina encouraging us to go and check it out. So Sallyand I went and that was when I got my first clue what pool was all about. The game, thecompetition, players from all over the world. I didn’t win a match but it brought out theplayer in me and I knew I had just played the best pool I had ever played and I cameback a pool player. That’s when I started to learn the game and continue to practice! What do u suggest to new playersPractice, practice, practice. Listen to seasoned players who offer tips and advise, takethe opportunity to watch the pros live...practice, practice, practice! How do u compare small table to big table play? For me one is not better than the other but there is a difference. I have been veryfortunate that I have the opportunity to practice on both. We have a big table at homeand my Pop has a 7’ Diamond. I need to use the bridge more on a big table, the ballsbreak different. You need to have a straight stroke for those long shots on a big table! At what point having fun while playing pool turns in to a stressful situation?1. Since I am fortunate to practice on very nice equipment it is very stressful andfrustrating to play at places with “mud” balls or balls with chunks gouged out, no lighting,or cloth that is not in good condition. You are supposed to adapt and adjust but it is verydifficult for me.2. When I really started to learn how to play, especially using English I went thru a periodwhere I couldn’t make a ball. I got really frustrated and at one point I actually put my cueaway in the closet thinking I wasn’t going to play for awhile but that lasted one hour! Icouldn’t stand it. I pulled it back out started hitting balls. I think that’s when I realized Iam addicted to pool and that I loved the game. Now when I’m in a slump and feel likeno matter what I do I can’t make a ball I just play thru it and usually my game has jumpsup a notch and I play just a little sharper.3. Its always stressful to have to tolerateunsportsmanlike like conduct. It shouldn’t be tolerated by the pool community at all.How has scotch doubles helped your game?

Scotch makes you aware of your leave and you always feely guilty when you leave yourpartner a difficult shot or no shot at all. Again I a m fortunate to have a great scotchdoubles partner, my Pop, because I know no matter how bad I leave him I havecomplete confidence that he will pull a fabulous shot out of his “hat”. So you try andcontrol the cue ball a little better. You are more aware of the position of the balls on thetable and try to keep it together for the win so as not to let your partner down.Plans for the future?Practice, play, practice. Play new venues like going to Louisville to play in the Olympics.

Reno open, of course Vegas is the tourney of all tourneys. It’salways exhilarating to play new competition. How do you plan to pass on the message to new players?Let’s have fun! These are some of the accomplishments achieved by Shawn:-On 2002-3 she ended up being # 15 in our top team bestshooters. By then her best number was 8.23. Her team directedby Sally Harvey took third place this season.-By 2004 she had made a move which would improve herchances to the money since she had joined a much moreexperience group of players lead by veterans Lisa Baker andHolly Robinson, in fact the teams standings improved by taking2nd place.-On 2005 Force Five finally took the so desired top price inwomen’s league. Shawn took top women for this season.-On 2006 this same team took 2nd behind Cue T’s, shawntook 8th spot on top women category, shooting at 8.79- On 2006 summer session she decided to explore big tableleague. She played Crown billiards and finished with first placeteam and top women $700-She attended the Reno Open and took top women in March2007-She attended the ACS tournament in Las Vegas in 2007Women’s Open 8-Ball Singles5-6th Shawn Modelo (Antioch, CA) $350SCOTCH DOUBLES AND SINGLES WOMENS TOURNAMENTS

2006 8ball league; 4th place for $1252006 9ball league; 3rd place for $470She has captured the 8ball scotch doubles league several times and has been aserious contender for the 9ball scotch doubles league as well.Shawn Modelo, is not only a friend, but has proven to have the qualities of what Iconsider a role model for the rookies of our league. To me she is a “player”. Thank youfor you commitment to the game of pool and our Diablo Valley Pool League.

table you need to play on.You can explain to the player that went to the player that was ‘practicing’and just put in the quarters and started playing and not announce that itwas a tournament match that this is a ‘unsportsmanlike’ act and is on awarning, that would lead to a DQ if another infraction happens. The only way to be fair and consistent is to play the match over.Neither player is determined to be correct. All bad feelings are directedtowards the TD. It’s part of the job.The TD’s ruling that was issued in your article was not wrong, but has lotsof room for improvement ... with just 15 players ... come on ... let’s be fair... get more involved with the problem ...don’t take the easy way out andjust let the match stand. Cathy Dunford developed a new volunteer force for the tournament. Some of thosevolunteers got some very nice gifts, one of which was a week’s stay at ChinookWinds Resort, graciously donated by the resort.Shirley Morgan worked with others to come up with the “dynamite” shirt design.Joyce Gumm, Cindy Rosenthal and Sassy Campbell zipped out the payout checks,

putting in endless hours so thatmembers could collect their hardearned winnings in the shortest waittime to date. Tom Moss did a greatjob on table layouts. Alex Stroup andStacy Sherman fielded as many mini-tournaments and second chanceevents as they could fit in, and therewere plenty. For those players between matchesor out of the competition, there wasbeautiful weather and a windy butsunny beach to enjoy when theyhappened to get outside. It was awelcome change from the wet andstrong winds that are usually present

at the beach in October.Gary Benson proved once again why he is such a good tournament director bykeeping the tournament on schedule. Saturday night was the biggest challengewith all the teams playing in the room. When the last 9-ball rolled in the pocket and Jim Conway let out a shout thatechoed throughout the room, this year’s tournament finally came to an end. All theWestern BCA board and volunteers hope that every player had a satisfyingexperience during this tournament and learned something new to add to their gamefor the upcoming 8-Ball Championship. What a remarkable tournament! There were many upsets and many playersreasserting their positions at a very competitive event. Generous congratulationsare in order for all the players, including those who have demonstrated the talent toreach into the upper divisions, and thosewho come with little hopes of winningmoney, but with great heart andexpectations of playing their best andhaving a ton of fun at the top regionalevents in the country. Thank you all forjoining us in one of the biggest 9-balltournaments in the United States. Three State Tourneys Held In FourDays ~ A Huge Success At MainStreet TucsonTucson Arizona's Main Street Billiardsheld it's annual State ChampionshipWeek on October 25th thru the 28th,2007. These State Tournaments, which date back to 1981, areconsidered among the mostprestigious events held annuallyacross the state. Three separatestate tournaments in four days. Here's what went down......Thursday, October 25thEight Ball was the first event of theweek, and defending championGeorge Teyechea let everyone knowhe wanted to make it two in a row ashe shot his way into the hot seat anda spot in Sundays finals. Arizona'shottest young gun, Mitch Ellerman, after an early loss to George, workedhis way through the one loss side to also earn a berth in Sundays final.

Rounding out the final fourvia some outstanding playwere Dennis Orender andRudy Alameda. Friday,October 26thTen Ball was the game ofthe day, and MitchEllerman earned hissecond state finals seat, this time undefeated.Muaz Arshad, after losingthe hot seat match toMitch, overcame TresKane in the Semis to earnanother shot at youngEllerman in Sundaysfinals.

Saturday, October 27thAt the start of the 9-Ball division of Championship Week, the question wascan Ellerman get to the finals in all three events? What role was Scott"The Freezer" Frost going to play in Mitch's run to perfection? As bothplayer's made it to the elite eight, returning on Sunday for the 9-Ball event,we all had to simply wait and see.Sunday, October 28thThe final day kicked off with Mitch outrunning Tom Neil, and then Scott overpowering Dave Capone, to set up a highly anticipated hot-seat match forthe 9-Ball event. Mitch then set history becoming the first player ever tomake it to the finals in all three events when he bested the Freezer 10-5 forthe hot seat.Meanwhile, Dave Capone, worked his way to the semis only to catch a

highly motivated Scott Frost, whointernally demanded another shot atMitch in the finals. Scott won overDave, 7-2.The stage was set for the finals, a onerace final to eleven games. Young gunEllerman jumped off to an early lead, but Mr. Frost patiently bided his timeawaiting his opportunity and when itdid arrive he took full advantagewinning this years State 9-Ball title, 11-7.Ten BallAnother finals for Mitch Ellerman, whohappened to be the ten ball defendingchampion. This years opponent wasMuaz Arshad, who obviously playedvery well to get to the finals. Muazhad a little trouble getting untracked

and fell to Mitch 10-3.Mitch was now 1-1 andhad one more final to play.Eight BallMitch was going for twoout of three, but to do sohe would have toovercome the defendingstate eight ball champion,George Teyechea. Thematch started withanother early lead for thekid, but George stormedback to tie it up at thehalfway point 4-4. Fromthere it went 5-5, 6-6, and then hill / hill, with Mitch pulling the last game outfor his second title of the week.Tucson's Main Street Billiards wishes to extend many thanks to all theparticipants and fans alike who made this years state championship weeka total success. The Charts!
